Another strong Villa display. Another Christian Benteke goal. This time, however, Paul Lambert’s blossoming side fall short as Branislav Ivanovic is allowed to stay on the pitch to nod home Chelsea’s winner.

The Game Changer

Arguably, referee Kevin Friend was the most influential individual on show. There’s also a strong case for Christian Benteke who struck his third goal of the season and has now scored nine league goals in his last 10 outings. Branislav Ivanovic’s goal proved the difference, however, and rewarded those who invested their double Gameweek funds whilst underlining the goal threat previously on show in Saturday’s win over Hull.

Friend’s decision to brandish a yellow for Ivanovic’s lashing out on Benteke was undoubtedly the turning point. It allowed the Serbian to demonstrate his ability at set-plays as, just minutes later, he headed home Frank Lampard’s dead ball delivery.

Ivanovic was the only Chelsea defender denied Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points from the Hull victory. Despite escaping a red card and being left for dead by Gabby Agbonlahor for Villa’s goal, Ivanovic looks set to earn bonus to make him Chelsea’s top scoring double Gameweek asset.

The Underused

While Benteke will earn huge investment following another goal and effective display, those who are struggling to stretch their funds to the Belgian will be eyeing the impact of Gabby Agbonlahor. So impressive during Villa’s run at the end of last season, he has started the new campaign in stunning form and yet claims less than 2% FPL ownership.

Instrumental in the victory at the Emirates, it was his turn of pace and delivery that set up Benteke for his equaliser. Agbonlahor has scored five goals and earned four assists in his last ten league outings.

The Selection Poser

It’s hardly a poser. Jose Mourinho’s decision to start with Demba Ba and leave Romelu Lukaku shackled on the bench disappointed Fantasy managers and Chelsea fans alike. His introduction for the ineffective Ba on 65 minutes provided little consolation. Lukaku played fewer minutes than any other Chelsea striker in the double Gameweek, having looked primed to start the campaign following a convincing pre-season.

Mourinho’s reluctance to hand Lukaku a central role on the Premier League stage is a puzzle. Perhaps he will start at Old Trafford on Monday and face a defence which he terrified on the final day of last season at the Hawthorns. It’s unlikely to make a difference – Lukaku’s ownership and price look set to slide.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

It's just unlucky really. It was a clear handball and the ref was in a good position to call that. Also, Benteke got booked twice this week, which is unusual for a striker to get booked in two consecutive games.

Blargh. I just can't believe how many times I went back and forth between him and Sturridge in the 1/2 hour before the final deadline. Oh well, hopefully Dannyboy will make up for it this weekend.

Are you planning to get Hazard back, or do you have Oscar or Lampard?

I think losing Hazard is a risk and could really backfire. Regardless of blank GW3.

Aye, I'll see. Even tempted to go with Noble at 5.5. He filled in nicely for me at times last season.

I think one area that we need to be flexible on, is indeed the cheap 4.5-5.5 rotating Mid. Last year we had to identify and go several different times. Sterling, Punch, etc.

Would the loss of 0.1m adversely affect your coming transfer plans? If you're gonna have to take a 4 point hit at some point to get the strikers you want, perhaps now is the best time, saving yourself some money in the process. However, if it's just to save money alone, hold onto Lukaku, he's got a decent chance against United and 0.1m won't mean as much to you in a few weeks. It's only not when 0,1m might as well be 0.5m if you've got specific targets in mind.
Add to that that if you take the hit, you're hoping your new man gets at least Lukaku + 4 points to break even.

If you'd feel happier having the money in your bank to spend in a future GW, especially as you seem to have identified a transfer, I'd say perhaps go for it. -4 now is less painful than in a few weeks, the earlier the better to get your team set.

That said, Negredo could prove in the coming weeks to be a serious rotation risk, and with Dzeko cheaper and seemingly ahead of him for now, I'd be tempted to gamble on a cheaper roatation option rather than the more expensive one if City cover is what you want.

go -4 friend. It's just so early in the season to lose that value. Plus, it would be one thing if you could still count on him playing 90 or not having a soon-approaching blank. Do it. But get in a guy you can rest on for a bit. RVW, Lambert, Bony (regardless he'll get 90).

Look at it as such: It's now a 3 week race to the International Break. Regardless if you plan on WC or not.

Over that span of 3 GWs, Lukaku is a guy who is off once and we have no clue on minutes for the other two. He could play 120, sure. But he's still off.

I'd think giving a guy with 3 games and 90 minutes per...270 total for 3 GWs a better chance than Lukaku at 15-120MAX.

On Suarez, that's eons in FPL time. Don't worry. Sturridge will likely be fully nailed on even when he returns.

I could also see Rodgers working Suarez back in slowly and out wide to get him "in line" a bit. Not taking on too much or being too reliant upon him. But also also reminding him that Rodgers runs the ship.

This is very true. If any manager can stop RVP it'd be Mourinho. But he may need Makelele back! Even conceding one to RVP though I can see Chelsea getting at least something. I'd believe Mourinho thinking 1 point at Old Trafford and 3 at Stamford Bridge is enough to put Chelsea ahead of United in the title race.

Possibly only in games where the clean-sheet-keeping side only have players getting a maximum of one goal or one assist each. It seems that a clean sheet now equals an attacking player scoring a single attacking return. But this doesn't account for, and this GW hasn't offered evidence for, games where the clean-sheet-keeping side's defenders have very little to do or one of their attackers bags a hattrick (or two without missing a penalty!) of goals or assists.

Taking this further, if looking for bonus point earning defenders, teams that keep clean sheets but still concede chances could be the best bets.

Obviously these teams aren't going to keep as many clean sheets as the Chelseas and Citys of this world, but when they do they may do it through blocks and clearances rather than the midfield never allowing shots to come in.

So perhaps a look towards West Ham type defenders could be the way forwards. They concede the chances, but keep them out often enough. Add to this the fact that their defenders are cheaper than those of the more likely clean sheet keepers (i.e. Chelsea/City etc.).

You can't extrapolate one week into the full season's results.

Defenders will probably get more BPs than last season, taking the 1/2 if they get in lots of blocks/interceptions in a low scoring game, or a chance of the 3 with a goal or assist.
But - how many defenders this week got BPs when they weren't on the winning side?
And how many defenders got BPs when they didn't keep a clean sheet?

Clean sheets and attacking points are the key to defenders getting BPs, and clean sheets are remarkably hard to predict, as are attacking points, it is easy to end up with these on your bench.

A goalscorer in a 1-0 win may now be less likely to get all 3 BPs without a good all round display as well, but that doesn't mean that goalscorers are not the best route to scoring more points, and scoring more bonus points.

The best way to get goalscorers into the team is with a 3-4-3, this hasn't changed.

Should i transfer out Lukaku? His price will fall in three hours. My options for relacing him are Lambert/Dzeko. Also it means a 4 point hit. But I've a feeling that Mourinho tested his other two options in first two games and they're not successful so Lukaku'll start against ManU and he'll be nailed from then. 🙂

mourinho won't play striker roulette. He is smarter than that.

It's a massive game, he will start with torres. Absolutely no chance lukaku who is the inexperienced of all 3 will start.

i was too tight to spend any points , just went Lukaku to Dzeko in the end.
Are you not worried Podolski may take his place

Nope. He's the sort of striker who'll demand to play. Podolski also isn't favored by Wenger to play up front alone.
