Andre Villas-Boas made his fourth signing of the summer transfer window last week by acquiring Etienne Capoue from French side Toulouse for a fee believed to be in the region of £9m. The versatile midfielder follows Roberto Soldado, Nacer Chadli and Paulinho to the club as Villas-Boas freshens us his first-team squad for his second year in charge at White Hart Lane:

The 25-year-old rejected the offer of guaranteed game time at Cardiff City to move to north London instead and despite the increased competition at his new club, reckons his international chances have taken a turn for the better:

“I decided that I wanted to play in a very attractive league. Because the Premier League is the top league in Europe, I decided that I wanted to go there and Tottenham was an opportunity that I could not refuse. Cardiff would not be a step up in my career. Tottenham allowed me to make that leap, Cardiff did not…I told myself that if I have a good season at Tottenham, I would have my chance to go to the World Cup in Brazil. I had a very good relationship with the president and staff during the transfer market and everyone agreed I should leave.”

The History

A product of the Toulouse youth academy, Capoue has been a one-club man prior to his move to White Hart Lane. Beginning his career back in December 2007, the six foot two defensive midfielder made just five appearances in his breakthrough season before cementing a regular role for the Ligue 1 club during the following campaign.

In his first three full years at Toulouse, Capoue offered little in terms of attacking returns –just three goals and three assists from 102 league matches – but has vastly improved over the last couple of seasons. Over 33 appearances in 2011/12 he produced three goals and five assists and improved once again last time out, with seven goals and an assist in 34 games. On the international stage, he has turned out for his country on 18 occasions and found the net once.

The Prospects

While Capoue is confident of accruing plenty game time over the campaign, there’s plenty of strong competition for the central midfield starting berths at White Hart Lane right now. The departure of Scott Parker, Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore may have lessened the load but with Paulinho, Mousa Dembele, Sandro, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Lewis Holtby all vying for contention, the strength in depth suggests rotation could well be on the cards.

At present, the future of Gareth Bale also plays a part in how we assess the situation. If the Welshman departs for Madrid, Villas-Boas’ shopping spree between now and the closure of the transfer window will likely have a major say in his preferred formation over the season. The 4-2-3-1 utilised at Selhurst Park on Sunday would surely restrict Capoue’s game time more than the 4-3-3 system utilised by Villas-Boas at former club Porto. Such a shape could well see the Frenchman sitting alongside Dembele or Sandro, with Paulinho pushing on as the most advanced central midfielder. Capoue’s versatility is likely to be beneficial to his minutes, though; Villas-Boas admitted this played a significant part in his acquisition, with the new boy also offering an option at centre-half in light of the summer departure of both Steven Caulker and William Gallas.

Those looking for a route into Tottenham’s midfield ahead of a strong run of upcoming fixtures will hold fire until the transfer window closes – the potential signing of Willian and/or Erik Lamela will play a significant part in how we assess the Fantasy landscape at the Lane. While a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price of 6.0 is relatively budget-friendly, there are plenty of similarly-priced options who offer both guaranteed game time and far greater potential of attacking points; Capoue, in all likelihood, looks set to remain firmly off Fantasy radars over the season ahead.

I am an UNHAPPY lukaku owner.

    What should I do:

    A dzeko
B ivan, luk => coleman, studge (-4) would give me 3 pool, 2 everton
    C hazard, luk => 6.0, kun (-4)

Did you have a plan for getting rid of your DGW players? What was it?

You already took the -£0.1 from Lukaku's price drop and I can't see from FISO if he's set to drop again, so is there really any rush to remove 2xChelsea ahead of ManU?

What are your bench options like if you kept 2x either Lukaku/Ivanovic/Hazard for ManU then moved another out after the game and benched one for GW3?

In my opinion and out of the options you supply I would go for B, but without the hit.

Iva>Coleman then after the ManU match GW Luk>Studge (although I don't personally think Studge is the best choice)

I think B with the hit would've been more justifiable had you done it before the Luk price decline.

Silva looked ok for ManC, perhaps a little deep at times.

Navas looked blistering. I could see him getting a few assists Vs their next 2 opponents and he might be a choice not many would go for.

Also there's Toure on FKs. The one he hit against Newc was sublime. And I'd imagine Car + Hull will have to do a lot of around the box tackling. We all know ManC have some skillful attackers who could draw plenty of fouls.

Silva has very little goal threat (I know he scored the other night, but only averages ~5 goals a year) and the baps system only has eyes for CS keeping defenders and goalscorers.

he's dropping faster than anyone at the moment. I think he'll definitely drop another .1m, if not .2m (though that's not TOO likely).

I'd go for Giroud at that price, or lambert if you don't have him. For a hit.

Afternoon gents. Posted this earlier on in the day, and now looking for some more feedback.

“Maybe I should not have made just two changes from Sunday and brought in more fresh players,” he admitted, adding: “My players, from midfield to attack, were not sharp, but when we don’t play well we have to win differently.”

“I thought I might need [Cesar] Azpilicueta as he is very fast for Villa’s counter-attack situations."

    - But then he went on to state that he played Ivan at RB to deal with the beast that is Benteke. Match him up for size and power.

I'm wondering if Ivan's starting place at OT is under threat from Azpi, as he might want him to deal with the 'pace' of Kagawa/Zaha/Valencia.

    Thoughts?

Quite possibly. Sounds like he doesn't feel there's enough to seperate them based on overall ability and is therefore going to rotate them tactically. If that's the case I'd expect Azpi to start against Utd. There's far more pace in their side than there is physical strength.

Certainly less of a physical threat from United so maybe. But i would expect to see Ivanovic included at centre half in that case. He is the best defender they have not to mention an obvious threat at the other end of the pitch too.

Can you link those Jose comments?

Here SD. There that bit on Iva that I can't find right now.

        About him playing CB.

"I see Ivanovic and Cesar Azpilicueta as our two right-backs." He said that before the season started.

Yeah i heard those quotes too. But still, i honestly think Ivan is the best defender they have. Think Jose would be silly not to consider him at centre half on occassions.

I don't think Jose is too worried about "harsh". It'll be whatever is best tactically. Azp is definitely in contention for RB, whatever happens at CB is hard to judge. Iva + Luiz would be a good combo, for instance.

In that case, that quote was taken completely out of context. He was saying that he preferred Azpi over Torres because of his pace... which was why Torres was left out of the squad

    Hazard ★ Oscar ★ Lampard ★ Kim ★ Huddlestone
    ..................Soldado ★ RVP ★ Altidore

I'm going to do Hazard -> Mirallas tonight I think, as planned.

Should I also do Altidore -> Benteke for a 4pt hit? I will still be able to scrape together a team for GW3 if I ship out another Che mid the following week.

    Aguero- The Main Man

He had literally no pre season minutes at all & still Pellegrini gave him 60 minutes run out which was enough to make immediate impact. The fact that he earned start just shows the faith of Manuel in Kun so I presume he's the main man & not Dzeko as many of you think.

He'll surely start against Cardiff IMO & won't be surprised to see him play entire game with Dzeko/Negredo sharing minutes as they are similar kind of players & don't have veratility of Sergio.

2 fixtures back to back against 2 promoted sides & questions hanging over Dzeko/Negredo starts, Aguero will be the main man in City frontline.

I understand he may not play as advanced as Dzeko/Negredo but that didn't stop him running riot against Newcastle in just an hour duration, did it?

Aguero also has Spot-kick duties in his locker & I feel he's the safe pick & may become season keeper if he becomes the constant pole as expected baring an occasional rest due to Champions league schedule

Having started as favorites to win Premier league this season City's 1 or 2 players could prove to be season keeper. Some people think points will be shared among City players as there are 4 Strikers. My question is wasn't the situation more or less same in City's title winning campaign & did that disturb Aguero to become viable season keeper? They scored something like 94 goals & Aguero racked up 200+ points. More goals means more involvement IMO so I can't fully accept "points will be shared" as a reason.

If City will continue with the form that harvested 4 goals in the opening game and Aguero being the Pelle's main man then I can see him being viable alternative to RVP. Aguero+Benteke+Soldado Strike force may become most popular in few GWs

It's just my opinion at the moment & as you already know things could be completely different after few GWs as FPL is a complicated game 😐

I'm looking at shipping out at least one of Lukaku, Hazard and Oscar this week.

Lukaku is the obvious choice since he doesn't seem to have a spot nailed down at all, but I'd ideally want to upgrade rather than downgrade him, so this means switching one of the mids too.

Over the two matches there's not really much in it stat-wise at all, so it's down to who gets most minutes really... I thought Hazard looked lively in the Hull game, but didn't see last night. Obviously Oscar got a goal which is a point in his favour and he also looked class - and is cheaper.

Anyone in a similar situation or got a view on this?
