Liverpool find a familiar cutting edge. Hull’s deadball specialist provides the difference, while an array of doubts come creeping as teamsheets and pose early questions.

The Game Changer

Once again, Daniel Sturridge delivered the winner. Brendan Rodgers’ slick passing outfit failed to produce the volume of chances we saw in the opener against Stoke but it didn’t matter to Sturridge. He took his one major opportunity with typical aplomb and, sharing a pitch with Benteke and his bandwagon, gave us plenty of food for thought.

Two games, two goals and a record that now shows eight strikes in his last seven league outings: with Villa’s strikers starved in the opening period, then denied by Simon Mignolet in the second, Sturridge was left to underline his credentials as a striker option.

Benteke and Tottenham’s Roberto Soldado have tempted big investment, while Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud has emerged as another potential prospect. Sturridge has to be added to that list of those contesting a spot in our forward lines and, with early season fitness doubts seemingly dispersed, he is perhaps presenting the strongest case of all.

The Underused

The search for a budget asset amongst the promoted teams was intense in the pre-season, with Robbie Brady’s name firmly in the mix. Despite the chatter, Brady attracted less than 1% of Fantasy Premier League managers and it was those select few who benefited from his winning spot-kick against Hull today. Brady epitomises a set-piece hogger: central to Hull’s free-kicks and on penalty duty, his delicious left-foot delivery will likely be key to their chances of survival over the season.

Is that enough to tempt investment? Today’s double figure returns should certainly bring him onto the radar for the masses and you have to wonder, while the likes of Ross Barkley and Pajtim Kasami continue to earn suitors in the budget bracket, whether Brady is the most convincing contender for that fifth midfield spot.

The Selection Poser

Uncertainty is building with the teamsheets still providing as many questions as answers.

Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne failed to earn an instant recall at St Mary’s only to emerge from the bench to replace recent bandwagon, Luke Shaw. The left-back was withdrawn having suffered further knee problems in the first half and could yet be an early concern for Gameweek 3.

Another popular budget purchase, the aforementioned Pajtim Kasami, was again deployed up in support of Dimitar Berbatov in today’s early kick-off. The 21-year-old attracted almost 90,000 new owners following his winner at Sunderland – can he really reward that investment? With Darren Bent off the mark from the bench and Bryan Ruiz in reserve, it looks highly unlikely.

Steven Whittaker earned a stay of execution in the Norwich lineup with Seb Bassong still absent, while team-mate Robert Snodgrass disappointed with just a single point return after being left benched by Chris Hughton. It could be very different tale for Snodgrass and Whittaker when the Canaries face Southampton next weekend, however.

Elsewhere, Kevin Mirallas was hauled off for the second match running having squandered further opportunities. It’s too early to get twitchy but the Belgian needs find an end product soon; it may not be long before Roberto Martinez starts to consider Arouna Kone for a role on the right of his three-man attack if chances go on being spurned.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Not sure, I'm loving defenders, seriously. So many of my points are coming from the back.
I also had Toure (8) and Foster (11) on the bench.

So, we are now in the deadzone - advice is about 90% better than during match time:

What are your current feelings on the BAPS and how does it affect your formation plans?

    I am thinking of having a good defence of about £25m (1x6m + 3x5m + 1x4m)

For my midfield I am thinking of 9/9.5/7.5 (4.5/5m on bench)

    This allows for something like

    Sturridge/Soldado/Benteke up front.

Do you guys think that Uber attack/Mediocre to good mid/Uber defence is the way forwards?

We only have two weeks to go on however it is looking very likely that defence will be key?

Defense won't be the key I think...teams haven't really started scoring yet especially the mids.....one mids start scoring, defenders lose clean sheets....a 433 isn't that good of an idea

It hasn't changed my plans at all. I based my defenders on getting 3 good fixtures each week so in those weeks my defenders should have as good a chance of baps as premium defenders. This week I got 5 baps from my defenders and my most expensive is 5m. (The fact I benched 4 of these is irrelevant ) 🙂

I think 3-4-3 is still the way to go. But I agree in midfield you can stretch the money a little more. Get two 9+ and two around 7m in midfield. Still gives you plenty of options for up front.

I've already made the switch to 4-3-3. If great OOP options become available in midfield like last year then I'll reconsider it, but I'm happy enough with it for now.

I do think if you're going to go 4-3-3 that you need 4 'big' defenders though. 4.5 options aren't going to cut it.

I'm only having midfielders who I know every game will threaten and not be rotated ever unless tired. Walcott and Coutinho. Then the best forwards in the league, in my opinion, rvp, Aguero and Sturridge. Then a 5 defence that covers a lot of teams that keep clean sheets, West Ham, Everton, Southampton, Liverpool, Norwich, and Man City that will change in the long run to Chelsea I think. They're not as an attacking side under Mourinho. Terry seems good value if he plays.

5 2 3 changing to 4 3 3. Never 3 4 3 as I used to do or 3 5 2. Midfielders neither get the clean sheets or rarely score, plus some are as expensive as strikers. For value only the very few give a good return, like Cazorla or Mata.

I plan to not take a points hit all season. If Bale stays, consider swapping rvp for him over two gameweeks. If Suarez arrives, swap rvp for him. Sturridge for Benteke.

Maybe I'll change if it's true that they'll be less clean sheets as the season gets going. My expensive forward line doesn't allow for flexibility at the moment...

Saying WCers have been mocked is like saying there is a war on Christmas. You probably notice every snide comment, but on the whole the idea of early wildcards has been taken in stride on this site. I frankly intended to do it and the only reason I haven't is that despite a rough start I think my team might pull through.

A wc played this week should mean u don't need a transfer this week, giving 2 FTs GW4 when there's numerous WCs.
On other hand, the slow price increases this season is bad for early WCers.

I don't see why people mock other people for individual decisions over their own Fantasy Football teams. It's idiotic. People should concentrate on what they're doing instead of moaning about what others are doing. It's the beauty of the game. If someone wants to play a wildcard, or take a hit ir twelve, then who am I to mock them? It serves no purpose whatsoever!

Sorry to keep asking, just trying to wrap my head round it as someone new to FISO. Why is Snodgrass not due to fall tonight? Because his previous yellow flag has given him some protection?

Looking at the stats he is way over his transfers out target and should fall.

I'd take both FISO and totalfpl with a pinch of salt at the moment; they're each ironing out early season issues as they come to terms with any changes FPL have made behind the scenes to how the rises and falls work. Give them a few weeks before you take anything on there as anything more than a "guide".

Snodgrass should fall tonight/today. He no longer has that protection.
That yellow (sometimes red) flag just increases the target for a price movement... which has occurred today.

I know Fiso and FPL are just guides, was just struggling to interpret them as someone new to the tool. FPL seems to have Snodgrass as completely safe whereas Fiso has him well over the drop level.

But as you say, I think I will hold. Hate losing value but not many in that bracket to compete and he should improve Norwich's recent dross.

Any Anelka owners out there? Looks like he will drop today or tomorrow.

No money in the bank, but might do a hit and downgrade Ivan, thus financing a more expensive striker.

What are you going to do?

He was my 3rd striker so brought chamakh in for a while as fodder to keep value up. Hazard to yaya next week so may look and upgrade in a fortnight but his home games look quite tasty

I took a hit this week to do Haz and Luk to Studge and Silva...

Quite happy to do another tonight, but saving 0.5 is tempting.

I sold down Hazard to Silva to help free up funds for this.

Used my FT past week to downgrade Ivan. Looking at either Berba or Lambert now. If Berba, I can do without buying him in tonight as he is also likely to drop tonight.

I think I'm leaning that way too, not for Berbatov though.

Depends on how much I want to spend on my defender... Could drop to 4.5 and have a 7.5 striker... Or stay with slightly premium and have up to 6.5

I don't think there is a best time, and i think wildcarding for value in the international breaks is slightly overrated. Ideally, you'd want to save it for FA Cup/Weather postponements after January. Just use it when you have a few injuries, or when you have several underperforming and losing you money, or when a few teams have a run of good fixtures. Ideally those things would come at the same time.

Definitely. When most people look at transferring a player in, they simply look at the highest overall scorers and he's currently the highest scoring forward. Can only see RvP surpassing him but he's so much more expensive and thus harder to transfer in.
