Cardiff upset the odds and battle back to grab the points at City’s expense in their first home match in the Premier League. Andre Villas-Boas shifts to 4-3-3 for the visit of Swansea, while Michael Laudrup tinkers with his forward options once again:

The Game Changer

An emphatic 4-0 win at home to Newcastle on Monday evening saw Fantasy managers loading up on City’s attacking assets ahead of a trip to Cardiff. Plenty anticipated a walkover in light of the Magpies mauling – almost 65,000 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) snapped up Sergio Aguero while over 76,000 opted for Edin Dzeko ahead of this afternoon’s showdown in Wales.

Compared to the visitors’ front two, Fraizer Campbell was no more than an afterthought but the former United frontman showed his top-flight credentials by bagging a brace and assist to send Pellegrini’s side back to Manchester with their tails between their legs. Andreas’ Cornelius’ return to fitness saw the big Dane warm the bench and although he’ll be pushing for a start, it’s Campbell who remains in the driving seat for the lone striker role, with his cut-price appeal (5.5 in FPL) bound to get the bandwagon rolling over the next few days.

The Underused

A shoulder injury whilst on international duty over the summer kept Aron Gunnarsson far from Fantasy radars as the season approached.

Those looking for a route into Malky Mackay’s midfield had mainly focussed on Kim Bo-Kyung, after the Korean notched three times over the summer but, having recovered in time for the Bluebirds’ final pre-season friendly, Gunnarsson looks a vital component of the Cardiff central midfield three.

Sitting alongside Kim and new boy Gary Medel, the Icelandic international opened his account for the season to serve Fantasy managers a reminder of the attacking threat which produced eight goals and six assists in the Championship last time out. Craig Bellamy, Kim and set-piece taker Peter Whittingham have proven far more popular picks but with a mere 0.3% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the 5.0 priced Gunnarsson could be another differential contender worthy of our consideration.

The Selection Poser

While the starting XIs at the Cardiff City Stadium were pretty much as anticipated, Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to replace Edin Dzeko with Alvaro Negredo midway through the second-half will have the Bosnian’s owners on edge ahead of the weekend home clash against Hull. Dzeko’s superb opener maintained his recent form but it was perhaps telling that Sergio Aguero was retained for the full 90 minutes against the Bluebirds; Negredo’s late goal will also give his manager food for thought as City look to recover from today’s unexpected stumble.

Andre Villas-Boas and Michael Laudrup gave Fantasy managers plenty to mull over at the Lane. The Spurs boss shifted to a 4-3-3 formation and demoted Gylfi Sigurdsson to the subs bench after just one game, with Etienne Capoue joining Mousa Dembele and Paulinho in the centre of the park. Villas-Boas’ spending over the next few days will likely hint at his preferred formation over the season ahead but for Sigurdsson, the signs are already looking ominous. While Andros Townsend staked a claim for inclusion with another strong display on the right, he, too, will be bracing himself for increased competition over the next few days, with two or three new faces anticipated.

Swansea’s Europa League duties continue to affect Laudrup’s selection policy up top. Wilfried Bony was once again named on the bench, with Michu preferred as the lone striker and Jonjo Shelvey tucking in behind – the Ivorian could be set for a Fantasy exodus if this continues for much longer.

It's anybody's guess so early in the season. All the big hitters could explode at any point. Silva is a fine choice. Most on here have some portion of the same 7-8 midfielders and none of them have done much yet. A little patience is required.

agree with the patience part..but dont really think coutinho is an option at 9..just doesnt look like he will score..will it be wise to load up on xpensive defenders and get 5.0 mids like brady esp.with d new bps system

That could well evolve into a full fledged strategy this season. I think all the clean sheets and low scores so far have skewed this slightly to look like it favors defenders but I don't think that is the whole story. I personally believe a few big mids will still be good value but I am admittedly getting twitchy about Coutinho myself.

Also knowing our batsmen are mentally fragile would have helped.

Should be a closer run series down here, I think a few English players (Root, Trott & Bairstow) will struggle with the extra pace & bounce in the wickets. Cook would be a very good shout for highest run scorer as he has not delivered this series and is a class player

Root will love the ball coming onto the bat with more bounce in the pitch. Predominantly a back foot player.

Need to take Lukaku before 2am (is still 2am) price drop

Other strikers are RVP and Dzeko

    Who to?
Benteke - Blank so no point
Sturridge - playing united so gonna be tough to score
    Giroud - Have Walcott
    Lambert
Soldado - too exp for RVP team

So looking like will have to be giroud or Lambert

    What do you think?

no, but maybe i should think about it if i decide that rvp is essential.

if i dont, hits or a lengthy process would be required to get RVP in tne re-bolster my MID. In order to afford RVP without hits, id have to go Haz -> cheapie (probably Whittingham), leaving me with 2 cheapies in mid.

Thanks for bringing up WC, maybe tis an option to consider

I have the 2 cheap mid option. Barkley and Ravel. I was really hoping and thinking the latter would get starts after pre-season. He could become problematic so I will get rid when I can. Other priorities now due to shifting DGWers and an injury. I'm still hoping that he gets a hatrick tomorrow in the cup V Cheltenham and big Sam plays him next weekend!

I'd be tempted to save your WC or if you decide you must use it try and wait until after the Internationals and the window closing so you have a clearer view of injuries, form and who emerges or comes in or goes out etc

Captained Silva in a bit of a gamble and while not a complete failure it didn't even light up a bad week. He had moments when he cut through the defense a little but the City attack faded out a lot today. Navas less sharp on the wing than in Wk 1, Dzeco very tightly marked by Cardiff D that did a good job all day of getting to the ball, allowing City little space to work in. Aguero was disappointing I thought and think Dzeco and Negredo should get the nod at home. Yaya and Ferd need to work it out on the back end also and Yaya in particular should be the stronger presence going forward from midfield to box. This is a game City should have won but they were outworked and outhustled.

I have Lamps and pretty confident he'll get get 30+ games this season. Thrives on set-pieces alright but also has a decent goal threat

Oscar? Could be a punt but expect rotation. This may well be his season amongst from our AMs

Overall, I prefer Lamps amongst any of our mids at the moment just for the price and upside from set-pieces
