Chelsea draw up to Old Trafford without a centre-forward but with a gameplan; they execute it perfectly. Jose Mourinho’s side defend stoutly to restrict United to scraps as Gameweek 2’s headline fixture falls flat.

The Game Changer

We were screaming out for a match winner to emerge, only to be left disappointed. Chelsea set out to stifle and frustrate United and succeeded in keeping them at arms length. Robin van Persie was starved of opportunities, Wayne Rooney, back in the United lineup, was restricted to long-range efforts. In an encounter billed as the first true heavyweight clash of the season, we were treated to a disjointed match, littered with misplaced passes and bereft of goalscoring opportunities. That won’t trouble Jose Mourinho and his determined defence.

The Underused

Rooney’s performance underlined what he brings to United. Strength, energy, craft and a goal threat – he will surely be a major player for Moyes, if, as expected he now remains at the club. Owned by under 2% of Fantasy Premier League managers, there’s no doubt that he has the potential to be a huge differential should he cement his start under Moyes and begin to show the form he demonstrated for periods of last season.

The Selection Poser

Rooney’s return to the fray will immediately pose questions over Danny Welbeck’s appeal. Having notched a brace at the Liberty Stadium, Welbeck has attracted big investment with over 90,000 having their head turned by the potential of United attacking player for 7.5. While Welbeck partnered Van Persie in a central role for much of tonight’s game, with so many options on the flanks and Shinji Kagawa to introduce, should he stay, Rooney would seem destined to tuck back inside on a permanent basis to renew his partnership with Van Persie.

The Dutchman’s owners will also be fidgeting at the prospect of Rooney’s return. Tonight’s blank would have come as a major frustration for those who handed Van Persie the armband and now, the prospect of Rooney emerging as a clear alternative in United’s attack will pose familiar questions.

A player of Rooney’s talent, offering coverage of United’s potential for goals, for 3.5 less – it’s a scenario that has to be considered by those with and without Van Persie. However, with so much to be decided in the transfer market in the next week and potential movement in and out of Old Trafford, the landscape could yet change once again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Dzeko still likely to come on even if he is benched, if previous ManC matches are anything to go by - but I'd agree that Haz out is the obvious move.

      no transfers needed immediately

would consider relieving yourself of Coutinho and/or Hazard

think Hazard will come good if you don't mind holding him through a price drop

less sure Coutinho will be rewarded by the new BAPS system unless Liverpool get another winger that lets him play "in the hole"

Evening guys, think I'm in decent enough shape - need to get rid of Brayford though.

    Vorm (Boruc)
Coleman - Turner - Reid (Toure , Brayford)
    Walcott - Mirallas - Kim - Ward-Prowse (Lampard)
    RVP(c) - Soldado - Sturridge

Probably a bit early on the week for this, but any thoughts on this team in the coming weeks?

Rooney was just CLASS today, I really want him in for my WC in GW4 as long as he is in the first team consistently. Anyone with me for this one?

Best performance I've seen of any player yet in the EPL games I've watched, long distributing balls everywhere, took good shots on net, and gave the ball to players such as Welbeck to finish but just squandered. Rooney is involved in most of ManU's goals and will get an assist if not getting a piece himself.

Not a fan of Welbeck's finishing. RVP is too expensive, and isn't worth it on some games such as this one against chelsea where he was wayyyy too quiet.

    DEF: Ivan-Zab-Jagielka-Chester-Turner
    MID: Hazard-Walcott-Mirallas-Nolan-Jedinak

One of (Ivan/Zab) has to go.
Considering bringing in Collins for Ivan so that I don't have to play Chester against City.
And looking at how poorly MID#s have scored so far I am not sure I should spend the FT on midfield.

      - avoid Chelsea blank
      - Zab has very nice fixtures over next several GWs and is cheaper than Ivan

Probably yes. Could be useful for juggling the squad a bit if anything interesting happens in the transfer window.

Midfielders have been terrible at the moment. Especially the high priced ones. Does it look like having 3 big midfielders (around 9m) and a 2 cheaper ones are the way forward?
And this can pay the way to a bigger front 3 (including RVP as a possibility?)
Bps come in more often for defenders plus CS is an opportunity with a lot of teams at the moment and especially with some that are in a more forward position (such as Coleman). Guess it is only the 2nd week... Over analysing much?

I'd even argue one big MF based on form and upcoming fixtures. Then 2-3 mid-priced guys around 7 who are nailed on and maybe not playing in Europe.

Be interesting to see how long we could get away with something like that! That's actually my forward line, but I haven't spent nearly as much in defence.
