Chelsea draw up to Old Trafford without a centre-forward but with a gameplan; they execute it perfectly. Jose Mourinho’s side defend stoutly to restrict United to scraps as Gameweek 2’s headline fixture falls flat.

The Game Changer

We were screaming out for a match winner to emerge, only to be left disappointed. Chelsea set out to stifle and frustrate United and succeeded in keeping them at arms length. Robin van Persie was starved of opportunities, Wayne Rooney, back in the United lineup, was restricted to long-range efforts. In an encounter billed as the first true heavyweight clash of the season, we were treated to a disjointed match, littered with misplaced passes and bereft of goalscoring opportunities. That won’t trouble Jose Mourinho and his determined defence.

The Underused

Rooney’s performance underlined what he brings to United. Strength, energy, craft and a goal threat – he will surely be a major player for Moyes, if, as expected he now remains at the club. Owned by under 2% of Fantasy Premier League managers, there’s no doubt that he has the potential to be a huge differential should he cement his start under Moyes and begin to show the form he demonstrated for periods of last season.

The Selection Poser

Rooney’s return to the fray will immediately pose questions over Danny Welbeck’s appeal. Having notched a brace at the Liberty Stadium, Welbeck has attracted big investment with over 90,000 having their head turned by the potential of United attacking player for 7.5. While Welbeck partnered Van Persie in a central role for much of tonight’s game, with so many options on the flanks and Shinji Kagawa to introduce, should he stay, Rooney would seem destined to tuck back inside on a permanent basis to renew his partnership with Van Persie.

The Dutchman’s owners will also be fidgeting at the prospect of Rooney’s return. Tonight’s blank would have come as a major frustration for those who handed Van Persie the armband and now, the prospect of Rooney emerging as a clear alternative in United’s attack will pose familiar questions.

A player of Rooney’s talent, offering coverage of United’s potential for goals, for 3.5 less – it’s a scenario that has to be considered by those with and without Van Persie. However, with so much to be decided in the transfer market in the next week and potential movement in and out of Old Trafford, the landscape could yet change once again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Soooooo......we're all going BAP hunting along route 433?

    Meaning I should do Haz -> Michu then downgrade Mirallas to upgrade Celustka?

      No, he is an 'assist the assister' type of player. He didn't get a single goal last season, and wont get many assist. He is likely to pass it to Silva, who will provide the key pass/cross for Dzeko/Negredo/Aguero etc.

      I've got him and am holding, but I'd say as nailed on as ever is a bit optimistic. He's older and will surely be rested when the fixtures start piling up.

        3 games in 8 days was unexpected.. i expect him to get rested in the champions league tbh. but i guess i exaggerated a bit. still a 30 game a season lampard for 8 million is value

        No, I want Sturridge in and already have Migs, Toure, Cout. As Cout is expensive and hasn't looked brilliant he is the one to go. I want to see Michu hit scoring form or at least have a good game. He looked abysmal last game.

    2 horrendous gameweeks in, 1.8 millionth in the world, 4 players in my squad who aren't playing... this is not how I saw the start of my FPL season.

    Boruc
    Ward / Turner / Toure
    Cabral / Silva / Walcott (c) / Coutinho / Mirallas (vc)
    Lambert / Van Persie

    Mannone / Anelka / Terry / Brayford

      Seems like quite a lot to have on the bench every week with your cheapest attacker Nolan a little north of 7 million. I'd downgrade one of him/Mirallas/Lampard to be a budget and splash the cash on the defense and/or Dzeko.

    OK, I'm going into GW3 with this lot:

    Chesney (proven Bap and Save Point magnet!)
    Toure, Zab, Celustka
    Walcott, Michu, Silva, Mirallas
    Soldado, Lambert, Sturridge

    Davis, Jedinak, Figueroa, Brayford

    Worth upgrading the defence for a hit?

        You mean: No. Not need when you have Super Ches to save your GW!

          As long as they don't concede a pen Spurs won't score, that's a big ask with Ches in goal 😉

        It nearly conforms to Forca's guaranteed success template too.

    Who would you play from Snodgrass, Whittaker, Shaw?

    I am thinking Whittaker with Snodgrass as first sub, is this a silly move?

    A) Hazard -> Silva(C)

    Or

    B) Hazard and Benteke -> Aguero(C) + Nolan 4pt

    Going to WC post GW3 regardless

    Midfield problem:

    Walcott - Barkley - Cole - Silva - Hazard

    Should I do:

    A) Hazard => Michu
    B) Hazard => Paulinho
    C) Bench Hazard

      I reckon Michu's points will be affected by Bony M once Laudrup starts him. Paulinho looked great v Swans but AVB will tinker a lot with those mids. Go Michu.
