Chelsea draw up to Old Trafford without a centre-forward but with a gameplan; they execute it perfectly. Jose Mourinho’s side defend stoutly to restrict United to scraps as Gameweek 2’s headline fixture falls flat.

The Game Changer

We were screaming out for a match winner to emerge, only to be left disappointed. Chelsea set out to stifle and frustrate United and succeeded in keeping them at arms length. Robin van Persie was starved of opportunities, Wayne Rooney, back in the United lineup, was restricted to long-range efforts. In an encounter billed as the first true heavyweight clash of the season, we were treated to a disjointed match, littered with misplaced passes and bereft of goalscoring opportunities. That won’t trouble Jose Mourinho and his determined defence.

The Underused

Rooney’s performance underlined what he brings to United. Strength, energy, craft and a goal threat – he will surely be a major player for Moyes, if, as expected he now remains at the club. Owned by under 2% of Fantasy Premier League managers, there’s no doubt that he has the potential to be a huge differential should he cement his start under Moyes and begin to show the form he demonstrated for periods of last season.

The Selection Poser

Rooney’s return to the fray will immediately pose questions over Danny Welbeck’s appeal. Having notched a brace at the Liberty Stadium, Welbeck has attracted big investment with over 90,000 having their head turned by the potential of United attacking player for 7.5. While Welbeck partnered Van Persie in a central role for much of tonight’s game, with so many options on the flanks and Shinji Kagawa to introduce, should he stay, Rooney would seem destined to tuck back inside on a permanent basis to renew his partnership with Van Persie.

The Dutchman’s owners will also be fidgeting at the prospect of Rooney’s return. Tonight’s blank would have come as a major frustration for those who handed Van Persie the armband and now, the prospect of Rooney emerging as a clear alternative in United’s attack will pose familiar questions.

A player of Rooney’s talent, offering coverage of United’s potential for goals, for 3.5 less – it’s a scenario that has to be considered by those with and without Van Persie. However, with so much to be decided in the transfer market in the next week and potential movement in and out of Old Trafford, the landscape could yet change once again.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

If defenders seem the way to go, especially in good sides liable to keep cleanies, then Koscielny and Kompany look good bets, especially if Komps falls again before his return.

Kos - 5.4m (unlikely to fall again)
Komps - 6.4m (at least another 0.1m before he's back)

I don't think defenders are the way to go but I'm definitely going to look to bring in Kompany when he's back. He's the only CB I'm confident will be nailed on for City and should be a beast with bonus points.

He has to do a lot of defensive work right now.. gr8 player but i think he wont be a gr8 fpl asset. With lamps hogging all the set pieces he depends on goals from open play and while he may create quite a few he is not getting into many goalscoring positions

Mourinho seems to have given him a bit more defensive responsibility, at least in the United match, and his form seems quite poor. I've dropped him for Silva before the next GW. I'm "wait and see" on all Chelsea mids at the moment before I see how Willian and especially Mata'll fit in.

It's a well-trodden path, but my two-penneth on the defender clean sheet debate...

In Gw1, 17 defenders picked up bonus. In GW2, 20 did. Taking out bonus gained by scoring or assisting, across the two weeks 12 of those players picked up the points in a 0-0, nine of them in a 1-0, five in a 2-0, and one in a 4-0.

Statistically it's been a strange start to the season in that there have been more clean sheets than you would expect. However what the results so far indicate is that if you can pick up the defenders who star in these 0-0s and 1-0s then there is good profit to be made.

Thing is... Has that ever not been the case?

Final bit of food for thought, here's a piece from the start of last season on the most common scorelines in the premier league: http://www.fanpredictionleague.com/blog/what-is-the-most-common-scoreline-in-the-premier-league

Fair enough, I didn't see the game. To rephrase my point then: depending on how the team is set up, the fullbacks may benefit just as much as the centre backs.

Need some opinions on this strategy

    foster (boruc)
    coleman chester ward murner *ivan*
    miralas kim wally coutinho *hazard*
    soldado *dzeko* lambert

    Current plan:
    gw3: hazard >> any mid upto 6.3
    gw4: ivan + dzeko >> any def upto 4.5m + Rvp (-4)

Looks good? Just worried about coutinho and miralas. could do cout > silva for another hit?

Former Wales and Manchester United winger Mickey Thomas tells BBC Sport that there is a belief at Old Trafford that Tottenham's 24-year-old forward Gareth Bale is on his way to Old Trafford rather than Real Madrid.

Thomas said: "The whispers around [Manchester United] are that he's Old Trafford-bound.

"That might be more in hope than anything else but it could happen, because by all accounts Real Madrid have not got all the money to put down for Gareth Bale and by all accounts they owe money [to Spurs] for Luka Modric."

There are whispers around Old Trafford that Ronaldo is coming too.

      Which is also utter pish.

Moyes categorically said yesterday that United have not bid for Bale.

With the amount of bonus heading defenders way in the first 2 gameweeks I'd be tempted to go 3 expensive defenders and 2 cheapies. For the mid I still think countinho and Walcott will shine.

        Forwards, soldado, rvp, aguero, sturridge.

Anyone else experience a slight drop in rank when they were expecting a bit of a boost with a Chelsea defender/Hazard? Must have been points off the bench for people. Good job van Persie didn't score, would have dropped like a stone!

Morning folks. I asked this on Sunday but thought I'd get a second opinion.

On Saturday night I got pisst and cocked up my planned transfer 😐 I took out Santi instead of Hazard for Silva. So annoyed because I really believe in Santi. I now have to play both Kim and Barkley and I don't even think I want Hazard. What do I do?

    A) Play Kim and Barkley and keep Hazard for a few more weeks
    B) Take a hit to rectify it (Hazard to Santi)
    C) WC and deal with my other deadwood like Adrian and Brayford
