Gameweek 2 stutters to a close with a cagey night of football at Old Trafford. Robin Van Persie owners are left frustrated as Chelsea register another clean sheet to keep the Dutchman quiet, while Juan Mata owners will be contemplating a transfer out after the Spaniard, along with Romelu Lukaku, warmed the bench for the entire 90 minutes.

Van Persie Draws a Rare Blank
The Dutchman’s failure to produce last night proved significant right across the Fantasy games. Van Persie had started the season with two goals against Wigan in the Community Shield and followed that up with a brace against Swansea as David Moyes’ side racked up a comprehensive win at the Liberty – as a result, he was the most popular captain and vice-captain in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game for Gameweek 2. With Wayne Rooney back in the starting line-up and tucking in behind, the omens looked good for Van Persie but, in something of a rarity, he was well-marshalled by the opposition defence and failed to register a single effort on target over the 90 minutes.

A trip to Anfield now beckons and with the Reds yet to concede this season, some will be contemplating switching the armband this weekend after last night’s disappointment. In a week that has seen Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Soldado and Olivier Giroud continue their goalscoring exploits, and with Christian Benteke quickly off the mark, those who opted to go without the Dutchman breathed a sigh of relief, while after the game, his manager cited the hosts’ lack of creativity as reason for Van Persie’s off-night:

“We lacked a little bit of cutting edge in the final pass or cross tonight..We went with three forward players as we wanted to try to make sure we won the game. There will be lots of games where I’ll decide not to play an attacking team, but that won’t make me a defensive coach. Just like tonight doesn’t make me an attacking coach. Tonight we felt that was the best approach. We did everything we could, we just lacked a ball to get Robin [van Persie] away for a chance to score, or Danny [Welbeck] that opportunity. We had one or two close calls, but it just wasn’t going to go in tonight.”

Mourinho Shuffles Up Front
Once again, the Chelsea teamsheet caught Fantasy managers by surprise as Jose Mourinho altered his options up top. Having started with Fernando Torres then Demba Ba over the two Gameweek 1 matches, Mourinho fielded new boy Andre Schurrle up front and omitted the Senegal striker from the squad altogether – leaving Romelu Lukaku as an unused sub, despite the Belgian registering a hat-trick against United for West Brom on the final day of last season.

While that move may have raised an eyebrow or two, the decision to also leave Juan Mata on the bench for the entire game was a real shocker. Even when he chose to replace Kevin De Bruyne on the hour mark, it was Torres who was handed the chance, with a personnel reshuffle allowing the Spaniard to lead the line as Schurrle dropped back into the attacking midfield three. With Mata and Lukaku playing just 65 and 40 minutes respectively over the three games so far, the duo are in danger of becoming peripheral figures under the new Blues boss – Mourinho explained his four attacking starters afforded him more “mobility” before commenting on his reason for omitting Mata post-match:

“He had a very small pre-season after the Confederations Cup, during that small pre-season he was injured. He started training two days before we played the first Premier League match, and had a match last week against Aston Villa, a difficult one, and today I decided to put him on the bench. I played with De Bruyne on the right because I know De Bruyne will give complete control of Evra defensively. When Juan plays on the right he comes more inside. I don’t say the kid is more tactically disciplined but is more adapted to that situation. I wanted Oscar to play behind the striker so I decided not to play Juan. Minute 70, 75, I was feeling [it was] difficult to win, I don’t want to lose, so I made the changes to control the last few minutes of the game, but no chance Juan goes anywhere.”

Blues Remain Resolute
While Mourinho’s selection up top continues to alternate, the Chelsea defence has been remarkably consistent. With their first three league games taking place over eight days, many had anticipated a degree of rest and rotation but the same four have started every game in front of Petr Cech, with John Terry and Gary Cahill forging a solid partnership at the heart of defence. The knee injury worries which saw Rafa Benitez continually rotate the Chelsea skipper last term seem to be behind Terry and with a relatively budget friendly price, his security of starts is likely to see him pick up new investors once the blank is out of the way. It’s just one goal against in three so far under Mourinho, then; it’s also worth noting that, despite conceding to Christian Benteke last Wednesday, the Blues backline limited the Belgian to a single strike all game – a sign they are returning to the resilience of old demonstrated during The “Special One’s” first spell at the helm.

Terry is the best value in Chelsea def. Mourinho strongly favors him and consider his leadership skills vital for the team. I expect him to start most of the games. Add to that his goal threat. He will again get atleast 5-6 goals this season and that makes him worth keeping for the season.

Okay folks, following on from last weeks team sheet prediction analysis:

      http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/08/20/scout-notes-gameweek-1-monday-2/?hc_page=5#hc_comment_5316510

Here we come with Gameweek 2!

Both Guardian Squad Sheets and FFS did better this week than their last efforts. With Guardian managing to put out the more accurate predictions for the second week in a row, although this time by only 1 player!

Of the 220 starting players this week Guardian got 194 of them correct, compared to 193 from the scout. There were a lot more perfect XIs this week, with FFS claiming 5 with their predictions for Everton, West Brom, Stoke, Liverpool and Man City. On the other hand Guardian got right Everton, Liverpool and Cardiff. Interestingly no source has got the same team perfectly correct for 2 weeks in a row. No single site gained a standout worst team sheet as both sites named two squads with only 8/11 correct.

Overall confidence in a player named in a team sheet starting:
      FFS: 86.59%
      Guardian: 87.27%

Here's the players that messed it up for them this week, with both failing on the following:

      AST: Clark > Okore
      AST: El Ahmadi > Bacuna
      ARS: Wilshere > Podolski
      CHE: Mata > De Bruyne
      NEW: Tiote > Shola Ameobi
      NEW: Gouffran > Marveaux
      NOR: Snodgrass > Tettey
      NOR: Hoolahan > Howson
      SWA: Bony > De Guzman
      TOT: Lennon > Townsend
      TOT: Sigurdsson > Capoue
      WHM: Cole > Downing

      additionally FFS went with:

      CAR: Cornelius > Campbell
      CHE: Lukaku > Shurrle
      CPL: Williams > Puncheon
      CPL: Dobbie > Campana
      FUL: Briggs > Riise
      FUL: Ruiz > Kasami
      HUL: Graham > Sagbo
      MUN: Giggs > Rooney
      NOR: Bassong > Whittaker
      SOT: Clyne > Chambers
      SOT: Yoshida > Fonte
      SOT: Ramirez > Rodriguez
      SUN: Roberge > Diakite
      SUN: Cabral > Gardner
      SWA: Britton > Canas

      while Guardian made mistakes on:

      CHE: Torres > Shurrle
      CPL: Garvan > Campana
      FUL: Boateng > Sidwell
      HUL: Graham > Livermore
      MCY: Nastasic > Dzeko
      MUN: Kagawa > Rooney
      NEW: Tiote > Anita
      SOT: Osvaldo > Rodriguez
      SUN: Cabral > Larsson
      STO: Whelan > Wilson
      SWA: Britton > Hernandez
      WBA: Popov > Jones
      WBA: Sinclair > Dorrans
      WBA: Vydra > Rosenberg

It may be too soon to start gleaning things from these offering but looking over the first two weeks a couple of patterns are seemingly emerging, rightly or wrongly, to my eye (and not even just the obvious ones such as sometimes you never know when an injury will turn up):

      - If a player isn't named in both team sheets his chance of actually starting is 47.86%

      - Guardian really love Kagawa, no seriously, they've named him in the starting XI twice for a grand total of 0 minutes played.

      - FFS have a habit of putting players just coming back from injury or periods of unfitness straight into the XI more than the managers (and the guardian). With examples such as naming Bassong over Whittaker, Cornelius over Campbell, Ruiz over Kasami and Snodgrass in their stating XI's both weeks. They're not always wrong though, in GW1 the scout said Vertongen would be fit enough to start over Kaboul and while the AVB agreed the Guardian thought otherwise.

      - If the guardian were premiership managers and made an top signing for their club they'd immediately put them in the first XI. In reality? Not so much. Predicting Osvaldo to start this week for Southampton, Sinclair for West Brom, Hooper for Norwich the week before and so forth it's where they make a number of mistakes over the scout. Again, they're not always wrong, predicting Taarabt to be thrown in to the fray immediately for Fulham in GW1 over FFS. But don't bank on them being right.

      - FFS tend to favour players talked up around this site compared to the Guardian. When Mourinho surprised everyone yesterday by naming no natural striker in his first XI both sites were wrong. But wheras Guardian had named Torres upfront FFS went with Gameweek 1 scout pick Lukaku. Similarly while both sites got it wrong on Aguero not starting last week the Guardian's guess was the, unappealing from an FPL point of view, Garcia. While FFS plumped for Negredo to give two examples.

      - Guardian still make some mistakes that anyone could spot. First game of the season at home to Hull? Essien to start in the midfield? Only in the guardian.

      - If you're looking for the Norwich team you're on the wrong site. FFS claim the lowest reliability for any particular team, if they say a Norwich player will start there's only a 68% chance of them being right.

Hope some people find this useful, i'll look to keep it up for a few more weeks.

I remember you were a Kagawa fan from a few conversations about captaining him last year (username formerly Chuck Norris)

I was initially excited about Kagawa's transfer to United but I think the RVP signing has been detrimental. May have blossomed playing in the hole behind Rooney. Fergie's departure also hurts as Moyes prefers Welbeck from the looks of things. Dortmund's playing style definitely seems to be a better match for him.

            Ahhh I remember well 😀

I would agree although I think it's more what's going on behind RVP that's causing issues. Kagawa needs to be in that AM zone, not on the wings. The issue as I see it is that Kagawa at Dortmund always had another incredible playmaker to work with (Gotze). What frustrates me is that if United knew how to use Shinji they could rapidly increase the number of goals scored. Honestly I would rather he leaves at this stage, he's being wasted.

Yeah, United's midfield is nothing compared to Dortmund's. Hopefully Moyes can come to his senses soon enough and give him enough game time. Another wasted season this year and I wouldn't be surprised if he left.

Whenever Rooney was fit last season, there was a Rooney vs RVP debate. Of course, Rooney kept on getting injured and RVP owners were delighted. BUT when he did play, Rooney was matching RVP and the stats showed RVP's output suffered.

Now IF Rooney can stay fit, given there is now an extra 1.5M on top of the 2M difference of last season, then can we see the debate leaning more towards Rooneys favour?

Seem this year is going to be about the mid price / bucket midfield and striking a balance between reasoable priced defenders 4.5/6.

Is it too much to have Coutinho and Studge?
Thinking of doing Lukaku > Studge with my free.

2nd question... Is Paulinho worth keeping?

out of Cou & Stu, i would prefer the later. Paulinho did bomb forward in his last game, should of had at least a goal

Lukaku to Sturridge is a great transfer

If necessary you can ship out Coutinho at a later date, but right now Sturridge is a great pick.

If Spurs play a 4-3-3 then Paulinho is definitely worth it, MOTD had some great examples of him bombing into the box vs Swansea

This comment from the Yahoo Eurobot Live system on whether Modric is taking a step back moving to United made me chuckle, being that he is my Grav du jour:

"Modric looks like a school girl with an aging disease, don't think he's worried about looking stupid..."

        Yes.
I still don't get this RVP madness..

So you think RVP + Barkley (who could not even start when Gibson is back) will score better than Soldado + 9.5 and less mid (Silva, Walcott, Hazard, Oscar, Lampard, Nolan etc.)
        ?

Was planning on getting RVP (crippling my team) but with Rooney RVP doesnt get the service he should, last night example: Preferred to shoot from 30 yards than play RVP through. Rooney hates RVP.
      So is RVP worth getting?

I noticed that throughout the game Rooney blanked RVP in just about every respect...No chemistry going on there....

Not getting the service had nothing to do with Rooney being on the pitch, it was down to a defensive mastercass from Chelsea. I reckon Utd would have give lesser sides a very torrid time.

Just about the only attack minded player worth talking about from last night's game was Mr Rooney...he managed 1 BPS on the detailed scoring system..and nothing in actual BAPS. He was top dog on the EA sports PPI index, which would have given all three BAPS last year. Last years system was flawed as it favoured the goalscorers far too heavily...often for doing little else. This years is flawed because it favours C/S's and almost meaningless short passing, but does allow for a greater inclusion of BAPS for multiple players....These are the facts folks...Is it time to change our game plans ?......Vidic / Ivanovic / Baines / Vert ? could well be the way forward...or similar...Thoughts after 2GW's !!

Unless your name is Britton....I played the Telegraph game a couple of years ago where they had a similar system...Britton was about the top completion rate passer in the league...all sideways and all 5 yds...

Agreed. Passing, even sideways, keeps fluidity and constantly makes the opposition shift their shape, waiting for that slip up to release the killer pass. I may have to consider a shift too.

Even BPS is tilted heavily towards goalscorers. Player playing for 20-25 minutes and getting a goal can never earn bonus in old system but now they do get bonus.

Still very early days but my thinking is that the multiple BAPS will be found in good defensive performances from teams...thereby increasing the scores of defenders across the board...

Left with J.Thomas to play otherwise

Fancy Morrison as a short term punt with SWA ful SUN exact sort of games the man gets his 5 goals and 8 or so assists from.
