Gameweek 2 stutters to a close with a cagey night of football at Old Trafford. Robin Van Persie owners are left frustrated as Chelsea register another clean sheet to keep the Dutchman quiet, while Juan Mata owners will be contemplating a transfer out after the Spaniard, along with Romelu Lukaku, warmed the bench for the entire 90 minutes.

Van Persie Draws a Rare Blank
The Dutchman’s failure to produce last night proved significant right across the Fantasy games. Van Persie had started the season with two goals against Wigan in the Community Shield and followed that up with a brace against Swansea as David Moyes’ side racked up a comprehensive win at the Liberty – as a result, he was the most popular captain and vice-captain in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game for Gameweek 2. With Wayne Rooney back in the starting line-up and tucking in behind, the omens looked good for Van Persie but, in something of a rarity, he was well-marshalled by the opposition defence and failed to register a single effort on target over the 90 minutes.

A trip to Anfield now beckons and with the Reds yet to concede this season, some will be contemplating switching the armband this weekend after last night’s disappointment. In a week that has seen Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Soldado and Olivier Giroud continue their goalscoring exploits, and with Christian Benteke quickly off the mark, those who opted to go without the Dutchman breathed a sigh of relief, while after the game, his manager cited the hosts’ lack of creativity as reason for Van Persie’s off-night:

“We lacked a little bit of cutting edge in the final pass or cross tonight..We went with three forward players as we wanted to try to make sure we won the game. There will be lots of games where I’ll decide not to play an attacking team, but that won’t make me a defensive coach. Just like tonight doesn’t make me an attacking coach. Tonight we felt that was the best approach. We did everything we could, we just lacked a ball to get Robin [van Persie] away for a chance to score, or Danny [Welbeck] that opportunity. We had one or two close calls, but it just wasn’t going to go in tonight.”

Mourinho Shuffles Up Front
Once again, the Chelsea teamsheet caught Fantasy managers by surprise as Jose Mourinho altered his options up top. Having started with Fernando Torres then Demba Ba over the two Gameweek 1 matches, Mourinho fielded new boy Andre Schurrle up front and omitted the Senegal striker from the squad altogether – leaving Romelu Lukaku as an unused sub, despite the Belgian registering a hat-trick against United for West Brom on the final day of last season.

While that move may have raised an eyebrow or two, the decision to also leave Juan Mata on the bench for the entire game was a real shocker. Even when he chose to replace Kevin De Bruyne on the hour mark, it was Torres who was handed the chance, with a personnel reshuffle allowing the Spaniard to lead the line as Schurrle dropped back into the attacking midfield three. With Mata and Lukaku playing just 65 and 40 minutes respectively over the three games so far, the duo are in danger of becoming peripheral figures under the new Blues boss – Mourinho explained his four attacking starters afforded him more “mobility” before commenting on his reason for omitting Mata post-match:

“He had a very small pre-season after the Confederations Cup, during that small pre-season he was injured. He started training two days before we played the first Premier League match, and had a match last week against Aston Villa, a difficult one, and today I decided to put him on the bench. I played with De Bruyne on the right because I know De Bruyne will give complete control of Evra defensively. When Juan plays on the right he comes more inside. I don’t say the kid is more tactically disciplined but is more adapted to that situation. I wanted Oscar to play behind the striker so I decided not to play Juan. Minute 70, 75, I was feeling [it was] difficult to win, I don’t want to lose, so I made the changes to control the last few minutes of the game, but no chance Juan goes anywhere.”

Blues Remain Resolute
While Mourinho’s selection up top continues to alternate, the Chelsea defence has been remarkably consistent. With their first three league games taking place over eight days, many had anticipated a degree of rest and rotation but the same four have started every game in front of Petr Cech, with John Terry and Gary Cahill forging a solid partnership at the heart of defence. The knee injury worries which saw Rafa Benitez continually rotate the Chelsea skipper last term seem to be behind Terry and with a relatively budget friendly price, his security of starts is likely to see him pick up new investors once the blank is out of the way. It’s just one goal against in three so far under Mourinho, then; it’s also worth noting that, despite conceding to Christian Benteke last Wednesday, the Blues backline limited the Belgian to a single strike all game – a sign they are returning to the resilience of old demonstrated during The “Special One’s” first spell at the helm.

Is Dzeko, Silva and Aguero overkill?

Getting rid of haz and lukaku for a -4 hit. So also need a midfielder for 6.1 or under.

It's not so much that it's overkill - I like Silva. But City have enough attackers to be able to drop both Aguero and Dzeko on a whim. I've got Silva and a City defender and that's what I'd recommend. If I was going to get a 3rd it would probably be Navas.

I wouldn't use it as a reason to get/ship a player. If you've already made the decision though - and there's going to be a price change for 1 or both of the players - then yes, make it in a way that increases team value.

I agree, for 4 points it is not worth it. Say your budget 4.0 id dropping to 3.9... he'll never play anyway.
But if your mid range player.... say Snods for example today and who may not play... out for someone who will.... you're likely to get some or most of that back and hold your team value. especially if the player coming in is on the rise.

I guess it comes down to the longer term price of the players and if you need them in a certain week for whatever reson.

Some interesting food for thought. Only 2 players have won the Premier League Golden Boot more than twice (and also 3 times in a row). Shearer and Henry. RVP *could* be on for equalling that record, but its not an easy feat.

However, his strike rate last season (0.69 vs 0.68) was a smidge below the average for winning the Golden Boot. Considerably lower than the season before at Arsenal 0.79.

    Henry won it 4 times @ 0.73, 0.81, 0.78, 0.84.
    Shearer won it 3 times@ 0.81, 0.89, 0.81

RVPs previous strike rates in 3 previous seasons to winning it:
    0.72
    0.57
    0.4

With all the changes and arrivals in the league i hardly think that RVP is a shoe-in (bad pun sorry) for the Golden Boot. I think we could easily see a number of players in contention - something that would likely make RVP @14m an expensive luxury.

Its also interesting (although logical as we all know) to note that its rare for it to be won by someone 30+ (and RVP was 30 earlier this month). Pretty sure Drogba is the only winner over 30. (Anelka was 30)

It could well be someone elses time; Sturridge, Benteke, Soldado.......

Not convinced by players from other leagues who can't get stuck in so soldado would be a waste

But players like sturridge benteke and lukaku look good
      even giroud and dzeko

      Rooneys back on form

14 is too much to spend on a old striker that kept getting crocked

If that happens in international break this place will have a riot

Starting game week 4 would you rather have

    A benteke/mirallas
    B Rooney/paulinho

After such a poor start (only 88 pts) I feel as though the transfers I make, for now at least, can afford to be used on bringing in the odd punt like Negredo.

Negredo is only owned by 2.6% and will be captained by fewer still - the perfect opportunity for me to potentially reap big rewards that only a select few will receive.

At current rank of 2,000,000+ I don't really have much to lose do I? Especially considering Anelka would be the player replaced. 🙂

Should I just go for it?

I think there's a psychological investment/statistical problem here. Basically - no. It is the 2nd week. Do what you believe will result in the most points, do not be different for the sake of it.

your logic is.. ..ive done bad so ill do bad choices.. dont cope with that buddy. Maybe wildcard if your team sucks, the points you lost over two gameweeks, sureley can be won back in 36 gameweeks.
If winning a ML is the goal of the season, and you believe the winner will be top 10k, and 2nd is no option, then maybe do Negredo.

It looks like you'll be taking a hit to get him in and then you're captaining someone who may not even start the game. If you're going to punt on a captaincy then at least go for someone who is probably going to start. We still don't know enough about Negredo and Man City imo.

Are Fiso and TotalFPL still unreliable on the price changes? I was thinking of wildcarding after GW3 but catching team value would have been a factor in the decision. I'm thinking this coupled with the fact I've had a decent-ish start means I should just save a FT this week so I've got a little more flexibility next. Sound plan?

Maybe he is after Walters' last one? He's got a poor record over the last couple of seasons and that could have been the final straw.

    Hi all,

I would like to pick your brains over who we think we start up top for city against hull?

I have Aguero in my team and want to (c) him, but only want to take the risk if he is pretty much nailed on to start. Obviously Negredo will come in at some point, but my thinking is that when he does, Dzeko is most likely to make way.

    Is this lsensible thinking?

People are saying negredo could start instead of dzeko mate

Don't know what's happening with jovetic

Pellegrini could play dezko negredo jovetic too but its unlikely

Aguero looks nailed on forward dzeko and negredo to rotate

Once jovetic is fit then probably only silva is nailed on

    Wildcard team for GW4, thoughts?

    De Gea, Marshall.
    Koscielny, Toure, Collons, Shaw, Chester.
Walcott, Silva, Michu, Ben Arfa, Lucas.
    Sturridge, Giroud, Soldado.

Still not sure about Michu and Ben Arfa though...

why on earth would you put Ben Arfa and Lucas in. Ben Arfa is injury prone and in a team that is utterly garbage at the moment and Lucas is a nothing player FPL wise.

Looking at Silva's goal threat and creativity stats, and given his rapid price increase (dont know how long that's gonna stay rapid for though), could you even say that he's becoming essential?

i wish id just tranferred him in last night before he rose, then i wouldnt have this headache of Silva/cheapo + RVP.

Who really rates Silva here and why?

And who thinks they can do without him and why?
