Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers added to his options on the flanks last Monday with the acquisition of Victor Moses from Chelsea on a season-long loan deal. Along with defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori, the 22-year-old was one of three deadline-day signings by the Reds boss and is the eighth new face added the Merseysiders’ first-team squad this summer.

Having sealed the switch to the league leaders, Moses revealed a series of talks with the Liverpool manager convinced him that he’s set to feature prominently this term, after a frustrating period at Stamford Bridge:

“Coming to Liverpool is another step for me. Brendan Rodgers is a great manager and he’s done fantastically well here helping the lads. When I spoke to him, he told me what I’m going to be doing here. I was really pleased with that and I’m looking forward to working with him. The manager has done very well and the formation and players here will help me and I just want to gel in, get to know the players and play with them. I am excited to be working in this system with a lot of quality players here.”

The History

A product of the Crystal Palace youth system, the Nigerian international began his career back in November 2007. Over the course of a couple of years in the Eagles’ first-team, Moses produced 11 goals and six assists in the Championship before being snapped up by Wigan in the 20009 winter transfer window.

His first season-and-a-half at the DW consisted mainly of substitute cameos. Moses featured 35 times for the Latics over this period but, with 25 of these appearances coming courtesy of the bench, he managed just two goals and six assists. Handed a regular role by Roberto Martinez for the 2011/12 campaign, the winger grabbed six goals and six assists in 38 league matches – he then played once for the club last season before making his way to Stamford Bridge prior to the closure of the summer transfer window.

With the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar and Juan Mata to contend with, Moses struggled to make an impact at the Bridge last term. While he played 23 league games for the Blues in the previous campaign, 11 appearances arrived from the subs bench and with just a single goal and assist contribution to his name, he fell quickly from Fantasy radars.

On the international stage, Moses turned out for England at every youth level from Under 16 to Under 21 a total of 29 times, scoring 11 goals, before deciding to represent the country of his birth in 2011. He has since turned out 12 times for Nigeria, registering four goals and five assists.

The Prospects

With big-money arrivals such as Andre Schurrle and Willian rolling up to Stamford Bridge, in addition to the loan return of Kevin De Bruyne, Moses seemed poised for another season on the Fantasy periphery. Whilst his arrival on Merseyside was greeted with little fanfare by Fantasy managers, the Nigerian’s prospects have been talked up by Rodgers – not only does the Liverpool boss reckon the loan star has a part to play, he also revealed Moses’ arrival could be the catalyst which allows him to unleash Philippe Coutinho in a central position this term:

”I’ve been aware of Victor for a long time and know his qualities. He’s the type of offensive player I like – he’s got terrific skill with the ball, is a wonderful technician and can go left side or right side. Victor can play anywhere across that front line, but probably his best position is on the left cutting in onto his right foot. That may allow Philippe more opportunities to play as that third man and be the connection between our midfield and front players. So hopefully that will allow him to move inside, but there are going to be games where he’ll play in a number of positions. That’s the type of players we try to bring in – intelligent footballers who can play in a number of areas on the field – but Philippe will get the opportunity to play more in that No.10 role, which is probably his preferred position.”

Certainly, Rodgers’ words will intrigue Coutinho owners. The Brazilian dazzled in pre-season but has failed to replicate his summer form and is yet without a goal or assist – a shift from the left flank to the role in “the hole” behind Daniel Sturridge indicates Rodgers has a 4-2-3-1 formation in mind, with Luis Suarez set to be fielded in a wide position upon his return from suspension later this month.

With Iago Aspas, Jordan Henderson, Luis Alberto and Raheem Sterling all vying for game time on the flanks, Moses face a real fight to establish himself as a regular but Rodgers’ words are clearly encouraging. A triumvirate of Moses, Coutinho and Suarez lining up behind Sturridge looks a possibility and, while the Nigerian is unlikely to offer the same number of starts as the other three, his relatively budget-friendly price may persuade some to take a punt for their five-man midfields.

Setting you back 6.2 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 5.5 in the Sky Sports game and 3.5 in the Sun Dream Team, Moses could be a real value for money option if he’s handed regular game time by Rodgers. Many will be content to hold fire and assess the situation first, though – with plenty of cheaper options such as Robbie Brady and Peter Whittingham guaranteed starts by their respective clubs, in addition to spot-kick and/or set-piece duties, Moses may be seen as a bit of risky business at the moment.

With similarly-priced options at the back for Liverpool, investment in a defence that has yet to concede this season could be a safer solution right now but, with the Reds squaring up to just two of last term’s top six in the next 11 Gameweeks, there’s plenty opportunity for the wide man to stake a claim for our consideration.

Nice one. I like these little community competitions. I'm not keen on the ones where you need to be a "somebody" to be accepted 🙄 bit elitist if you ask me. I remember a couple of seasons back there was one that we all got well and truly into and changed all our gravs. Havn't seen anything as good since sadly

Sooooo Arsenal fans, tell me about Giroud this season!?!

Is he in the form his 3 goals in 3 games suggests, is he confident, is he settled in after the 1st season? Whats different this season?

In the season before he joined you, in 11/12. With Montpellier. He scored 26 goals (21 of them in Ligue 1) and more surprisingly 15 assists in all competitions (12 of them in Ligue 1)

Thats a tremendous record. Do you think he'll replicate close to that this season?

He's doing what he threatened to do at the back end of last season.

His problem is only ever confidence and that was knocked by the media beingnon his back pretty much from day 1. He obviously won't keep up his goals to game ratio but he's in for a decent season and will score 20 +.

At every club Giroud has been at, he has had a poor first season, and then over 20 goals the next. He is very strong, uses his body very well, has a brilliant touch, brings others into play really well, makes brilliant runs, and has finished really well in all pre-season and in competitive games. I have a confident £5 for top scorer this season.

So Suarez is only 1 league game from being back to the squad.

A lot of words have been said about him and how he affects Sturridge's potential - negatively or positively?

Suarez has really nice assist potential and is much more creative than Sturridge. As we can see in the stats of number chances created from the last season, he was 6th in the league with 89 chances created and we need to have in mind that he didn't feature in 5 EPL games:

      NUMBER OF CHANCES CREATED (2012/2013):

      Baines (117 in 38 app.)
      Silva (103 in 32 app.)
      Caz (95 in 38 app.)
      Mata (95 in 38 app.)
      Gerrard (92 in 38 app.)
      Suarez (89 in 33 app.)

Sturridge may really benefit from Suarez coming back to the squad and I believe that we will see more goals in Liverpool games very soon.

Santi's stats may drop though. He will be playing more wide now, mostly on the left, while last season he was playing mostly in the hole. And what is more, Ozil will be keeping ball a lot.

I assume assist potential decreases for Cazorla, while he may benefit from Ozil passes, so his goal potemtial should be better. On the other hand, Ozil may get some direct FKs, but I'd still trust more in Caz here

Yeah, there were shades in preseason like when he played Real with a 4-3-3 and Heitinga DM. Heitinga was dropping between the CBs and turning it into a 3-4-3, so they were alternating. Definite 4-2-3-1 now though. Wondering if he might pull it out again some point this season since he signed Alcaraz.

Its a balanced formation. You have cover defensively and if you can get your front midfield 3 making forward runs and contributing to the goals, its a very good formation. But when things arent working so good with the 4-2-3-1, people criticize it for being too defensive, due to the two holding midfielders. Similar to man-marking and zonal-marking debate. When its working nobody says a thing, when its not....well its flawed. Its basically BS anyway, because if its an interchanging system, then one of those can go forward at times whilst the other one sits. Whats good about it also is that its flexible, and can change into other formations depending on how the game is playing out. It can change from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3 pretty easily on the fly.

It obviously works because Rafa won quite a bit at Valencia using the system before coming to Liverpool. Once it caught on a lot of managers started using it. But its origins are more Latin and from European football in particular over two legs. England was still a very much 4-4-f*cking-2 sort of league for many many years, until the influx of new ideas came from abroad. Now we see lots of 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 and now 3-5-2. Which teams were playing around with in Italy YEARS ago.

Tactically we are way behind and just picking up on other country's new ideas. We dont innovate anything. Hence the reason we are so far behind on the International level.

However, football changes/evolves and now we are starting to see more fluid "formations" which are anything but rigid, to a point where there is really not a set formation or template, rather it 10 outfield players on the pitch with the freedom to do what they want within reason. When you see Barcleona play, they basically play a possession based 1-2-1-2-5. Not a 4-3-3.

              😆

Yep. This seems like the evolution. With those "holding" midfielders being super fit and encouraged to do it all.

Thats why I've been hoping we sign someone like Diame. Football is moving towards two extremely fit athletic "holding" midfielders, when one goes, one stays etc. But both have the same jobs. It just requires a bit of intelligence and common sense from those two players and the team around them to drop in if needed. But you can really dominate teams with this physicality. Its hard to stop, because not only do you have the strikers and "wingers" to worry about, you have two players rampaging through the middle. Its an overload.

So when we see this now, someone like Patrick Vieira was clearly ahead of his time.

Takes a special player to be able to do this job, but boy can they be influential. Ramsey will be regarded as one of the leagues top players in a couple years. Boundless energy, brilliant defensively, good going forward (can do better) and if he can get in the goals...oh boy.

When I started playing FIFA in 1996, you had

          532, 442, 433, 424, 352

1 up front waant an option.

I imagine today its the default in FIFA.

I stopped in 2000 as it was all sh1te after FIFA 98.

thats a bit like saying 451 is the same as 433

they are similar, but also distinct

4231 two clear dmcs, wingers are slightly back
433 compact in the middle, wingers more forward, and sometimes wider

Just a "little" something to look at during the international break 😉

Having done a total of 8 Youtube player analyses I thought I would take a look back at some of the more relevant ones to see how the player I have analysed are progressing. I'm excluding Carrick (not relevant to FPL), Van Ginkel (lack of game time), Lamela (not enough game time, new signing, only done last night).

7 of of my analyses can be found here: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/08/15/the-scoutcast-episode-109-two-men/?hc_page=41#hc_comment_5260708. My analyses of Erik Lamela can be found under the scout report on this site posted yesterday, it is a stickied comment.

      1. WILFRED BONY

      Pre-season Comments:

From these clips you can see that Bony knows how to use his head and his fantastic link up play could help him form a lethal partnership with Michu. However, if you read between the lines you will share in my disappointment from seeing that this player who scored 40 goals in his last 2 seasons combined seemed to show very little in terms of taking long range strikes. In fact, many of the clips I did not show involved him using pace before slotting away a finish which was more towards the centre of the goal than either post. Thus I would expect GKs in the prem to save a lot more of his attempts. As long as the likes of Hernandez, Dyer & Routledge supply him with crosses, Bony could be a star. However he may struggle if the ball is constantly played into his feet and a comfortable partnership with Michu does not form in a consistent manner. Much like Demba Ba's decrease in threat once transferred to Chelsea.

      Now:
      http://youtu.be/gQNbwLFbndI?t=3m19s

His goal against United found in the above link shows that Bony is certainly capable of hitting the ball into the corners of the goal. A problem for him however is Laudrup's tendency to rest him after playing him in the Europa league, a worrying development for the striker.

1 goal in 143 minutes is not bad, especially considering the goal came against the current champions. However, in his most recent match Bony's average position was near the half way line, whilst Michu & Hernandez's average positions were slightly ahead of him, perhaps this is an indication that Bony is struggling to receive the ball in threatening positions and drops deep in order to receive it. Indeed, on average across the three games, Michu surprisingly has more touches and passes received in the opponent's half and final third by a significant margin (almost double in some statistical comparisons).

Furthermore, an attempt on goal on average per 28.6 mins is a slight cause for concern considering that he is beaten by other mid priced options such as Lambert (23.7), Dzeko (20.7) & Giroud (20.3). Also, having complimented him on his strength in dispatching shots with his head, Bony has only averaged 0.7 attempts in this manner which is beaten by the likes of Wolfswinkel (1), Dzeko (1.7), Giroud (2.3). This means that he is not being able to use one of the biggest strengths to his game which assisted him in his successful exploits with Vitesse Arnhem last season.

For now he does not seem a good option at £8m as alternatives like Lambert and Giroud have been showing more encouraging statistics and form respectively.

      2. JOZY ALTIDORE

      Pre-season comments:

Really wasn't expecting this, but after watching these clips I'm so very excited to see Altidore in the PL and am considering him as a differential striker for my team. He's a striker with a strong heading ability as I've seen from multiple clips (in a similiar fashion to Bony), he also has brilliant link up play ability (also similiar to Bony), however, what separates him from the fellow newcomer is the fact that he really knows how to use his feet to throw defenders off him.

Add a good level of strength, complete composure when under pressure and a fantastic finishing ability to the mix, and you have a very exciting prospect in your hands. Altidore can score in a variety of ways and in my opinion is head and shoulders above Aspas in terms of goal threat (both come in at a tempting £7m).

Almost all the goals I've seen show him shooting into the corners and so he is a very lethal finisher, in fact my doubts about the weakness of his league have subsided as the quality of his finishing and skill has been at such a level that I feel these goals would easily translate to the PL against better defenders. He really does seem to be an all round striker who is developing at a fast pace with consummate ease. I feel this season will see Altidore shine in the same way Benteke and Lukaku have previously (both these strikers also came to the PL from "weaker" leagues), although Sunderland really will need to step up to provide him the chances to thrive as he is a player who relies on his team to provide him with opportunities to score (similiar to both Bony & Soldado).

      Now:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVRyc3H2MG0

A disappointing punt during his "easier" fixtures - although out injured against Palace, Altidore has of course failed to score or even assist in either of his games thus far even though he has been afforded over 180 mins for the club. Of course this is based on a small sample size of just two games but the statistics should hopefully allow us to understand his adaptation to the PL a bit more.

Only just below Lambert in passes recieved and touches in the opponent's half and the final third, it is clear that Altidore is still being involved in the offensive flow of his team even if he is not finding an end product. His attempts in total and inside the box are almost half those of Lambert - a worrying statistic considering that he has been playing as the focus of his team's attacks. Another disappointing factor is that Altidore has had 0 headed attempts on goal, he like Bony seemed to have a great strength in producing quality headers and has also not been able to use this to his advantage.

Of course, with the absence of Fletcher, Altidore may not have been able to use his great knack of interplay to get into goal scoring positions. I feel as if in general Sunderland have failed to supply Altidore with the ammunition he needs - as Swansea have to a certain extent with Bony - and so he is definitely one to drop from your team until Sunderland as a whole pick up in their offensive exploits. The link above shows that Altidore is still obviously a composed and good finisher and so it will be interesting if he can use a partnership with Fletcher to pick up his form via his use of interlinking play.

      3. IAGO ASPAS

      Pre-season comments:

So what do we learn from Aspas' most recent season highlights (previous season clips were hard to find)? Firstly, he is definitely not an out and out striker in the same way Soldado and Bent are, he is very much a man who likes to drift onto either wing just outside the box. There are a few problem which were highlighted when viewing his goals, one of which is the fact that Aspas has an almost unerring manner of shooting straight into the middle of the goal. I really am disappointed in the lack of clear variation in his shooting direction and for 2 of his goals I could clearly see the keeper cursing himself as Aspas shot toward the keeper himself and was lucky enough to be rewarded for his effort. With the likes of Begovic, Mignolet, Krul, Vorm, & Foster in the league (not to mention the top 5 team keepers), I do believe Aspas is going to find his first season in the PL a frustrating one unless he changes this.

Another very worrying issue is that all the skills showed by him on pitch could be classified under close control, he doesn't seem to be the type of player who has a variation of skill in his locker when taking on a defender. On a scale between McClean/Valencia to Adam Johnson/Nani in terms of skill when approaching a defender, I would put Aspas close to the middle but just about on the side favouring the first two players. It seems he is very much an attacker he just runs to get away from the defender and pushed the ball away from them if they lunge at him, this means he would find it extremely difficult if ever doubled up on or facing a truly organised defence.

The fact 3 of his goals came from penalties, 1 from the goalkeeper's hand not being strong enough and another from a deflection hardly inspire confidence. Taking those away reduce his season tally to just 7 goals, and even 1 of those was a simply shot down the middle with a goalkeeper cursing his weak ability to handle a one on one situation.

I would steer clear of Aspas unless he began to show why he managed 23 goals in one of his previous La Liga seasons, considering he has lost penalties to Gerrard and will be on the wing as opposed to the central area, he is at a clear disadvantage to the likes of Berbatov or Lambert when weighing up your options.

      Now:
Classified as a striker in FPL but played on the right wing for Liverpool, Aspas has had just 1 assist in 200 minutes. Surprisingly his average position across the 3 games is actually central rather than out wide but his involvement in play on average is worse than both Sturridge & Coutinho. Furthermore, although Coutinho has been lambasted for his lack of attacking threat, the Brazilian averages 3 goal attempts to Aspas' 0.7 (a hefty margin) and averages the SAME number of attempts in the box as Aspas, a player who is seen as more attacking in his goal threat.

However, when it comes to assist potential Aspas surprises us by creating more chances on average than Coutinho (28.7 mins per chance created to 43.7). This is still offset by the fact that Aspas has a disastrous rate of 100.5 mins per goal attempt compared to Sturridge's 28.5 mins.

Overall, Aspas is definitely one to avoid as other mid priced strikers such as Lambert and even Van Wolfswinkel (71.5) have less mins per attempt. As for being Liverpool coverage, with BAPS almost ignoring assists and strikers needing goals to justify their places in your FPL teams: Sturridge, Suarez & Coutinho are almost certainly the main protagonists in consideration for Liverpool coverage due to their significantly greater goal threat whilst Aspas takes a back seat as a very risky differential pick for the foreseeable future.

      4. WAYNE ROONEY

      Pre-season comments:

So what can we glean from this visual presentation of Rooney’s season? Well what seems obvious is that Rooney is still very capable of getting the goals to match and beat other great – but lesser – goal scoring talents such as Defoe and Ba. But as well as having a reasonably strong season as a striker, Rooney has thrived in United’s attack from a more withdrawn position too. He has been integral to their build up play in the final third and is very often involved in the final few touches of the ball before a goal – much like David Silva in his breakthrough season at City. He thus is very much a world class CF who can take on a goal scoring responsibility whilst helping his team in their attacking endeavours even when behind the ball itself.

Furthermore, Rooney has shown flashes of brilliance in his link up play with RVP and there is the hope that his second season could see him thrive as the supply man to the lethal Dutchman whilst being a goal scoring talent in his own right. It should also be noted that RVP also had numerous instances in the season where he scored a goal Rooney could have scored if the ball dropped to him at the exact time it came to RVP or another player in the box, I was only able to find a few examples of this as it would be too arduous a task to sift through every other United player’s highlights.

Having already compared him to Silva, I do not think it would be completely unreasonable to compare him to Valencia or Navas in his crossing ability and he should be able to provide ammunition for goals both from set pieces and from drifting runs out wide. It should be noted that he should benefit from Vidic’s return to fitness as the Serbian has a tendency to capitalise from set piece goal scoring opportunities.

Without going on too much of a tangent I do personally believe that Moyes made a bit of a mess which was publicly misconstrued as him downplaying Rooney’s importance to the team. I feel as though Moyes, as any manager worth his salt would, recognised that RVP was United’s main outlet for goals whilst Rooney was the overall engine of the United attack who also could score goals and has the possibility to take on a greater goal scoring responsibility should RVP get injured.

Finally, I feel he was on the cusp of challenging RVP last season. Even matched him in fpl points output when they played together. This season he may completely outshine RVP on value plus captaincy option combined due to that massive difference in price. captaining Rooney or Sturridge is a much more potent choice than RVP and Anelka! BAPS should also be taken into consideration, as I understand it, there is less emphasis on goal scoring and much more on overall team involvement. I feel Rooney would shine here as he is a strong passer (pass completion "PPI") and also is very involved defensively.

      Now:
Do I still think Rooney will be the main engine of our attacks when fit? Yes. As a United fan do I still think Rooney has an important role to play in our attack during the season? Of course.

In just 118 mins Rooney has gathered 2 assists compared to RVP's 2 goals in 266 mins and his average positioning across his appearances is just slightly behind the Dutchman. Of course with the addition of a certain Afro bearing CM, Rooney will no longer have to fill in from a deep position and should no be given the freedom to attack at will.

Overall Rooney's involvement in United's play surpasses the Dutchman via touches and passes received. But he importantly competes with RVP on minutes per goal attempt average when taking price into consideration (31.8 to 21.2); whilst being behind in this regard he blows RVP out the water in terms of assist potential with 42.3 mins per chance created on average compared to the Dutchman's statistic of a whopping 276 mins per chance created. Rooney's creativity is understandably behind the likes of Silva and Cazorla (30.4 & 26.9 mins per chance created respectively) but is ahead of Hazard (47.3 mins per chance made) and only just slightly behind Coutinho (43.7 mins per chance made).

Of course, although Rooney looks like he could be an assist machine I seem to be wrong about the BAPS and Rooney will need to rely on his goal threat in order to rack up the bonus points. Having said that his shot accuracy thus far is an impressive 75% compared to RVP's 23% and so it seems he still has an eye for goal to work in cohesion with his playmaking strengths. I still believe that if fit throughout most the season (around 32 starts) Rooney could reach double figures both in goals and assists or at the very least beat the 20 goal + assists mark.

      5. Roberto Soldado

      Pre-season comments:

Well, after finishing this analysis I simply cannot contain my excitement. Watching these clips I was trying to come with a label for Soldado but I feel it would be a disservice to just give him one. Out of the numerous clips I did not include he showed excellent timing in his runs to score without pressure from the defence, really similiar in the way Chicarito capatilises on his own movement to score. However, Soldado also has great pace and uses it to great effect to leave defenders, combined with his excellent timing he goes above and beyond a player like Benteke as he really understands how to stay just onside before applying the finishing touch to a goal. Numerous clips I have seen showed him grabbing a goal where the defenders near him were behind him but he spotted an opposition full back out of place and allowing him to remain onside. The clips I have included show you he truly is a lethal finisher in addition to being an excellent poacher. A combination of RVP+Chicarito+Bent as a description of the type of player he is would be appropriate here (fantastic volleys and shots from angles + fantastic runs into the box to leave the defender clueless as he scores from close range + great positioning to score a tap in). Finally, it must be noted that Soldado is NOT a dribbling striker. He is not similiar to Aguero or Suarez in the way that they create their own chances and so he is very much just a lethal finisher who can occasionally set himself up for a great shot (not a bad thing at all!). In a team like Spurs he should thrive of the supply given to him and I feel he will be a significant upgrade to Defoe. In terms of value I see him rivaling Aguero in his breakthrough season by scoring at least a return of 16 goals when being modest (with a lower price tag expected - around the £9m mark).

      Now:

Is there much to say? It's been established now that Soldado is like Bony in the sense that they definitely need chances created for them and the likes of Townsend and Chadli have failed to do that for him as they are more preoccupied with taking shots themselves. However, based on my analysis of Lamela last night and my upcoming analysis of Eriksen I very much hope his fortunes will improve as the new duo are play making talents (Lamela seems to be a pretty unselfish talent and has bags of skills to provide great chances rather than just relying on pace to produce hopeful crosses like Lennon). Already established as a penalty taker I think we should give Soldado another 3 weeks to prove himself whilst Lamela and Eriksen settle into the team and provide him with a good supply of ammunition, I've no doubt the Spaniard striker will rise to the occasion!

Apologies if some of you are seeing this for the second time, just trying to spread it round to people who may miss it due to being offline when I did post it before.

I really wouldn't man. I reckon Soldado will definitely prove far far better value than RVP and also provide you a good captain choice a lot of weeks once Lamela & Eriksen are in full flow.

Cheers. I've decided to hold judgement on Soldado. Only saw him v Palace, looked like he'll take time to get to PL pace. Has plenty of attacking Spurs competition for FF points.

Rooney will be class once he's fit. Today Van Persie looks only serious competition for FF points.

Michu will be very good, having a slow start but the main Swans FF points man.

Aspas, plenty of effort but not enough FF returns and will be benched once Suarez returns.

Altidore, nothing of note so far in a poor team.Even when he's injury-free he doesn't look fit. Looks more like a WBA heavyweight champion than a lean mean Premier League goal machine.

Agree on Rooney but I think Soldado has been getting into all the right positions, the team just haven't seen him standing in perfect spots in the box to score (seen it happen twice this season where the RM runs to the byline and just whips the ball in blindly when Soldado is standing behind the defenders with about a meter circle of space around him in the box itself!). I reckon Lamela & Eriksen will help him hugely.

Michu I surprisingly disagree with. Last year I swapped him for Hernandez I think but it ended in disaster because Pablo got injured. However, the reason I downgraded Michu in the first place last season was that when they played full games together (about 4-8 in a row), Hernandez completely and utterly outshone him points wise. He's picking up where he left off and I stupidly forgot about that whole thing until Hernandez had his recent fantastic game.

I still think Altidore is quality personally but Sunderland are just so awful when attacking.

He's getting in the wrong positions if he's anticipating wrongly where the ball will end up but it'll improve with time. I don't rate Eriksen, nothing exceptional in a lower league than PL, not great in CL and did nothing for Denmark in Euros and WC, but hope he proves me wrong. Lamela can play further forward and have a negative impact on Soldado's points.

Michu will improve, he has to or I'll get rid 🙁

            Altidore doesn't impress at all.

Trust me it's not like that. It's that his widemen on the right (I think one was Lennon and another time it was Townsend) had no spacial awareness to look up and provide the short and very simple pass across the box for him to score. If he went to where they put the ball the defender closer to the near post would have cleared it for a corner before he got a sniff (which they did anyway). He really is a classy striker being given terrible service imo. Fair enough about Eriksen (I don't know much about him just know that he's a playmaker from Ajax who everyone was raving about last season). I think Lamela will score a fair few but will also provide much much better service to Soldado than the likes of Lennon or Townsend (did a youtube analysis of him in the hot topics so you can see that he's a creator as well as a goal scorer).

Michu will definitely improve imo, I just personally think Hernandez is a much better pick, or at the very least will be much much better value as long as both stay fit and play regularly.

Don't know if you've seen his goals and link up play for his old club (check out my Youtube analysis if interested - I provide all the links and specify the times you should skip to - to see why I rate him so much despite how awful he's been so far).

Not unselfish as in overplays the ball and always looks for the pass but in the sense that he'll recognise when the striker is in a better position than him and get the ball into the striker's feet; be it running on the counter or choosing between cutting inside to shoot or getting past the defender on the right to get a cross/pass into the box for the striker.

I personally think Altidore is far better than Bony (check out my Youtube analysis of both if you're interested, gives you all the links to the good clips to compare them youself). But Sunderland are still an absolutely torrid attacking force who can't create good chances even if they're playing 11 v 1.

Agree with Aspas. Really disagree about Rooney, he really did give RVP a run for his money when fit last season & this season so far.

Soldado is isolated because the likes of Chadli & Townsend give him nothing to work with imo. Lamela & Eriksen should hopefully solve that problem.

That's just saying that Soldado is good but Chadli and Townsend, both good players, make him look bad. He needs to work harder with his attacking MIDs and wingers and between them work out where he wants the ball for them to be in sync with them.

They are good players but are awful at the moment of being aware of where to put the ball. It isn't hard to look up before choosing whether to blast it into the box or lay off a pass.

What does work harder even mean? He knows exactly where the ball should go, he loses the CBs by peeling off them so that he has plenty of space in the box. You're basically asking for him to be telepathic with them. All his job is as a striker is to get into plenty of space from which he can shoot from and in a space that makes it relatively easy for other players to feed him the ball. He has done it in the most perfect way twice in 3 games and his widemen completely and utterly failed him by literally blindly thumping it across and hoping it hits someone (it happen to be the opposing CB both times). I think in those examples Lamela would have fed him the ball to score.

Mate you're basically asking for him to dash across the back of the right CB to stand right in line with his RM to score from a very tight angle. Not everyone is Javier Hernandez.

You're asking for this (the dots make the goal line):

              ....................
              ----------CB, Soldado-------------Towsend

              Instead he does this:
              ..................
              -----------CB--------------Towsend
              -------------------------------------------
              ----------------Soldado----------------

What he does is definitely 100% better than what you wanted him to do in those scenarios. Towsend or Lennon or Walker completely and utterly flopped in those situations.

Haven't had internet for the past 2/3 days so haven't been keeping up to date on post-transfers conversations, but I've spent the last hour or so looking at the sticky comments trying to get m head wrapped around whether I want RVP on thee WC that I'm currently playing?

I'm leaning towards yes, but midfield suffers.

For an RVP draft I'm looking at a 4-3-3 looking something like this:

      Migs
      Vidic Zabaleta Coleman Chester
      Walcott BenArfa Hernandez
      RVP Benteke Giroud

      Lewis Collins Barkley Redmond

Could also go with Lamela over BenArfa and Brady over Hernandez, but not sure...

Thoughts during this despicable international break?

I peronaly wouldnt have Ben Arfa, he so often frustrates and is injury prone. Not to mention Newcastle are dire.

Lamela could be a good shout, if he does anything at all against Norwich expect him to rise

In reply to the formation posts.
Particularly Poseidons bit about Champ Manager

Have any of you ever invented your own formation and tested it out on such a game?

In 2000, I used 3-3-3-1, one I made up as it was flexible enough on a game called Player Manager.

It was a basic 3 at the back and the front 4 was sort of what we now get in 4-2-3-1. Two wide men, a strong loan striker and a number 10 creative/scoring mid.

The middle 3 had 1 ball winner and 2 wider ones of the Zanetti mould (capable of being a full back or defensive mid).

It meant you more or less had 6 at the back, 6 in midfield and 4 up front. 😀 Always wanted to see it used in real life. Won my Milan side so many trophies. 😀

The default 4-1-3-2 was a trick formation almost in CM 01/02. I woneverything in the game with it. You can download the game for free and patch an up to date data download onto it for modern players. Simplistic but the games beauty was itssimplicity.

      Good evening friends.

Got around to updating the captain stats thing after all, wasn't as much trouble with their changed code as I had first imagined. Code might be a bit messed up still so there might be bugs but since there isn't that much activity on here right now, how about we give it a go?

Not many gameweeks gone, who is the 13/14 early season captaincy frontrunner? Hook me up with your FPL IDs to find out! I'll stick around for about twenty minutes and to keep the site clean I'll only answer to replies to this post. If anybody even wants it.
