While the club-record signing of Stephane Sessegnon made most of the West Brom headlines on deadline day, Steve Clarke’s acquisition of Morgan Amalfitano from Marseille may prove a canny piece of business. Arriving at the Hawthorns on a one-year loan deal with a view to a permanent move, the 28-year-old will bring a much-needed creativity to a Baggies side without a goal to their name in the league this season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Clarke was quick to praise the new arrival and indicated Amalfitano’s versatility could be key for the campaign ahead:

“I’m delighted to welcome Morgan to the club. He is predominantly a right-sided midfielder who can also operate in a number of other midfield and attacking positions. Morgan is a technical player with good quality on the ball. He also has fantastic work-rate and we believe his game is well suited to the Barclays Premier League. Morgan’s arrival will increase competition in midfield and add more quality and depth to the squad.”

The History

A product of the Cannes youth system, Amalfitano’s senior career kicked off back in 2003/04 with French outfit Sedan. Over the course of four seasons, he turned out 126 times and picked up a pair of assists for the strugglers before he was acquired by Ligue 1 side FC Lorient ahead of the 2008/09 campaign.

The midfielder’s first couple of years in his new surrounds harvested nine goals and eight assists over 72 top-flight appearances before Amalfitano improved markedly, with five goals and 16 assists delivered in 2010/11. Signing for Marseille under freedom of contract in July 2011, he failed to replicate his final year at Lorient and managed just two goals and seven assists from 60 league games before making his way to the midlands. Amalfitano has also turned out once for the French national side, providing an assist in a 2-1 win over Germany in February last year.

The Prospects

With the Baggies still failing to adjust to life without Romelu Lukaku, Clarke is yet to settle on a familiar XI or formation so far. The West Brom boss has already handed six midfielders and five forwards game time in the opening three fixtures and switched from a 4-4-2 formation to 4-3-3 as he attempts to find a suitable system without the big Belgian to bang in the goals.

Certainly, Sessegnon’s arrival suggests a move back to the 4-2-3-1 of last season could be on the cards, with the Benin international tucked in behind a lone forward. While such a scenario would indicate Amalfitano is more likely to be handed a berth on the Baggies right, it remains to be seen just how often he can expect starts, bearing in mind the likes of James Morrison and Graham Dorrans also offer options in his preferred position.

Coming in at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.4 in the Sky Sports game, the Frenchman is certainly cheaper than the majority of his midfield team-mates and looks one to monitor, should Clarke decide to lessen his rotation and attempt to nail down a settled side. With games against United, Arsenal and Liverpool, in addition to a trip to Stoke in the following six, though, few will be willing to take a punt on West Brom options right now, with the upcoming schedule affording Clarke’s side little opportunity to turn around their poor start to the season.

It's Friday and I still haven't done my WC team. Thoughts on this:

    Mingolet, Boruc.
    Vidic, Mertesaker, Collins, Shaw, Chester.
    Walcott, Hazard, Lamela, P.Hernandez, Ward-Prowse.
    Sturridge, Benteke, Giroud.

Seeing a lot of Vidic-not sure why.
The Mig/Bor combo bothers me as both have great cs opportunities so I don't know when you play them.
I can't Hernandez continuing to score consistently high.
      Lamela is too soon.
      Haz-good luck with CHS rot.
Go0d front three although prefer Goldado to Studge.

      4/10.

Goal scoring - what once every 10 games or so?
Good fixtures yes but there are cheaper options with just as much cs potential e.g ARS/TOT/STH defs.
How much will he rotated with CL? Then he's plagued by injuries.

          Nope, not for me sorry.

People will disagree but I think you have a better chance at some points if you start Collins or Chester over Brady. No seriously. WHM is pretty decent defensively and so is Southampton this season, and neither team looks super threatening going forward just yet, which means we may see a low scoring game imo. And Hull looks like they will be trying to stay strong at the back and hosting Cardiff means at least a decent chance at a clean sheet.

To be fair Brady did do very well in the only home fixture so far, and Hull were unlucky to start away to Chelsea and City right off the bat...and whoever you put on the bench will stay there keep in mind - you don't have really any starter doubts imo.

I would always start Coleman as he brings more attacking possibility to the table. But I can see why you're starting the defenders you are, I don't have that strong a defense unfortunately so I really can't rationalize not playing him.

Unless your squad was broken, wildcarding this week will prove to be a mistake. Data is lacking more than normal. I wouldn't have a clue what to do with one right now.

            Marshall is passable.
            Mir/Kun will come good.

Aguero and mirallas could still explode.
            Silva isn't ruled out yet.

The increased threshold has slowed things - but not too sure as to what extent. There will be one 0.3 riser, compared to 2 last year - but Ozil has undoubtedly affected that as he's had enough transfers for a 0.3. But today is by far the busiest day of the 2 weeks so we ought to see how this pans out before jumping to conclusions.

Hmm didn't realise Fiso was so off the pace on price falls.

Got excited last night and did Silva and M Turner > Nani and Vertonghen for a -4.

Stupid move, although I'm actually regretting possibly doing Walker instead of Vert, rather than the Nani punt.

Know it's massively popular and also massively unpopular on here, but I had made decision beforehand so haven't been swayed, so it's my fault if it's a massive fail 😀

    Migs / Harper

    RVP / Benteke / Sturridge

I'd have walcott over ozil myself. He is the first name in my squad. Eriksen decent shout with spurs' fixtures. I personally prefer whittingham (or barkley if you don't mind a rotation risk) to brady, who I think will do little other than score a couple of penalties (providing hull get any more)

        Thanks for the reply

Truth told, Ozil is there as an insurance policy. We know Walcott can score points, if there's a big haul for Ôzil then he will explode, and I have no wonga left over to cover him

I can always downgrade him to Wally should the need arise.

Interesting call on Wittingham (or Kim for that matter), Barkley less so IMO as I worry for his game time now they've signed Maloney and Barry: i.e. he's competing with Osman

I'll stick with Brady throug their decent fixtures, but the 5 and 4.5 are always subject to changes as and when fixtures dictate

I have a theory that last season has overly influenced people's wildcard tactics this season.

Last season got off to a BANG with the likes of michu and Fellaini immediately emerging as ultra-value midfielders, as well as RVP's confirmation that he would fit right in at OT

As such those who wildcarded early (gw3) were rewarded with solid teams which flew full steam ahead.

As such people who wildcarded did remarkably well, leading to the conclusion that EARLY WILDCARDS ARE OPTIMUM!!!!!

Let's remember that sometimes early season form isn't a true indicator like last year. Sometimes a lack of form means we have nothing to choose from (seems like that this year?) 3 weeks CAN be a good indicator, but take a random slice of 3weeks from any season and you'll see some WEIRD SH1T more often than not.

I personally am happy to have my wildcard ready for when the likes of spurs, chelsea, erm, everyone, announce with more certainty how they'll lineup.

I've played my WC, but my overalæl 'strategy' for the first GW's has been RAISE CASH FOR RVP

I have not made as much as last year, for the reason's you state, but RVP is now in my team with less pain than it would have been 3 GW's ago.

😛 the divisions between RVP owners and non-RVP owners is growing by the hour!! Has there ever been a bigger divide created by a single player?

Exactly the same hear. Don't want him and wrecks the squad. But 46% ownership for me is just too great a risk. This is the single only factor that makes me have him for this week.

If he is the only forward to score big, then the impact on overall ranks will be significant, if you don't have him. The other way around (he blanks and others don't) will not have the same large impact. It's completely a risk thing.

If he blanks, we'll all be selling him anyway (so ownership will no longer be an issue) and we can re-align our teams with the norm....

....46% ownership is my only reason and it's valid.

This, accompanied with the fact he will be the standout captain multiple times.

GW4 he is the standout because it is palace at home, then there are a few weeks where the other big boys have tough fix and he doesn't.

If it was just gw4 and then no other standout captaincy options (in terms of who he is playing, not just who he is) I wouldn't have him.
