[sbu_large_image] The Knee Jerk

Arsenal’s young gun comes to the fore to steal Mesut Ozil’s thunder. Tottenham’s icy finisher shows his worth to overshadow their own debutant, while the Gunners top scorer gives his owners a scare by limping off with a knee problem.

The Game Changer

All eyes were on Mesut Ozil’s performance on his debut and, while the German’s display exuded class, composure and the first of many assists, it was Aaron Ramsey who will hog the headlines. A brace of goals capped what has been a hugely impressive season so far for the young Welshman – a player who has suddenly emerged from the shadow of Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere, to promote himself as a true box-to-box midfielder, capable of controlling matches and scoring goals.

Ramsey’s smart volley and a slotted finish from Olivier Giroud’s pass took him to five goals in all competitions – matching his total from last season. Quite simply, Ramsey is a player reborn at a time when the Arsenal midfield looks set to be rejuvenated by Ozil’s promptings and uncanny eye for the killer pass.

While the pre-match effort concentrated on how to juggle the cash to possibly accomodate Ozil’s price tag, Ramsey is available for just 5.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), £5.8 million in the Sky Sports game and £2.5 million in the Sun Dream Team – a game which has him ranked as the top midfielder.

Today’s returns will surely see his stock soar further, as Fantasy managers seriously consider loading up on Arsenal’s attacking assets as the creativity and opportunities for goals in the Gunners camp hits new heights. Indeed, with Giroud finding consistency up front, there’s even a case for a switch in emphasis, away from the heavy hitting midfield trio of Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla and Ozil with a Ramsey/Giroud pairing currently offering strong value.

A late injury scare for Giroud may just change all that, however. The Frenchman was withdrawn late on with a knee problem and we’re awaiting news on the extent of the damage.

The Underused

While Ramsey is the darling on one side of north London, Gylfi Sigurdsson was the toast of White Hart Lane. Given the opportunity to impress by Andre Villas-Boas, the Icelander seized the day, providing a stunning reminder of his goalscoring ability as Spurs eased past a disappointing Norwich.

Like Ozil, Spurs had their own glittering debutant on show. Christian Eriksen’s performance, embroidered by a debut assist, will doubtless have piqued the interest of Fantasy managers. It was Sigurdsson who provided the end product, however.

At just 6.9 in the FPL, we now find ourselves reassessing his potential. While Eriksen and Erik Lamela offer the glamour and excitement of new arrivals at the Lane, Siggurdsson’s talent as a Fantasy asset is proven from his season at Swansea. If he can cement his starting role, he could yet make a return to the reckoning and draw investment away from Tottenham’s expensive imports.

The Selection Poser

Giroud’s injury is an immediate concern for many – given that he is already the most popular transfer target amongst the forwards following today’s goal and assist haul, clearly there is an urgent need for clarity.

Subject to over 268,000 transfers in over the international fortnight, he has already acquired over 15,000 new owners on the back of this afternoon’s display but the bandwagon will surely slow on the back of his withdrawal.

Post-match, Wenger was asked whether the Frenchman would be fit for the midweek Champions League match against Marseille but gave little away:

“That’s my worry today after the game. We are very thin at the moment. [It is] a knee problem. He is the player at the moment that would be very difficult for us [to replace.]”

With Lukas Podolski and Yaya Sanogo out and Nicklas Bendtner far from match-fit, Wenger’s forward options are stretched to threadbare already. A potential absence for Giroud would be a massive blow to his Fantasy owners but could, in turn, promote Walcott as the central option if the prognosis proves pessimistic. Wenger’s next injury update is already eagerly awaited.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    51 -4 this week.

My defense bailing me out big time. A bit miffed I bottled the Giroud (c) but Soldado was the best captain on paper.

Waiting on Giroud injury update before I make a transfer, but thinking now's not a bad time to get on the Mignolet wagon since I have the funds.

Yeah there's a fine line. The cracks were also there to see. Soldado hadn't been on the best of form - attempts and chances created wise, compared to Giroud who is red hot.

I just got swayed by the fact that Eriksen and possibly Lamela were going to play and that they'd create a hatful of chances. Also Soldado scored for Spain. Turns out I was partly right, but not on the part that I wanted to be..

I think I need to consider a profound change of approach. I've gone for what I always have which is a stats based approach. Midfielders and strikers picked on the basis of shots in box and chances created.

Unfortunately, week after week expensive players of mine have been nailing those stats and not getting the points! Walcott. Mirallas. Coutinho. Silva. Even Soldado today had chances and just wasn't putting them away.

At the same time, week after week I'm resisting the gut instinct to get in players that aren't frontrunners stats-wise but actually deliver the goods. Ramsey. Barfa. Lampard (I accept the odd resting like today).

Add to that the impression that despite the lack of bandwagons, the average always seems higher this season than I expect based on my experience of the last two (yes there are many factors behind this)... I get the feeling I really need to go back to the drawing board and rethink my approach to FPL from first principles, ie. POINTS. Not which are the hottest 4 midfielders to have, not which are the hottest 3 strikers to have - just what team gets the most points.

But the hottest players are always the one to have the most points in the the current gameweek 😉

Relax, chill....You're making this game more complicated than it is. Don't go solely by stats, but going solely by gut instinct will someday fall flat on your face. Mix it up, and keep it simple, silly.

I think the irony is that I have kept it simple, very rigidly following a policy of maximizing shots in box from my attacking players. And it's 4 gameweeks I'm judging, not just the latest one. A full month of Prem football.

It's really that Einstein quote, stupidity is doing the same thing every time and expecting a different result.

I guess I'll go off momentum a bit more to catch the likes of Barfa and Rooney.

I think you just need to be patient and start assessing the ones who ARE putting away chances. That's a stat too.

Ben Arfa is a stat whizz, and so is Giroud, and they've both delivered. Go for the likes of them and pad your team out with some nice up and coming picks as well as stalwarts like Walcott and Eriksen.

Yeah conversion is a stat, but it's one I've generally not prioritized so far because I think there's quite a lot of evidence it doesn't significantly vary between most top players. See the PL Fantasy blog for example. The idea of regression is based on the idea of a fixed goal conversion rate for all players, usually.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Barfa mainly had shots outside the box before today which generally convert poorly into goals. See taarabt etc. He scored today inside the box. I think even Pardew acknowledged he was different today saying he was 'unplayable' as opposed to the last game he scored when he didn't rate his overall performance. Can't remember if that goal was outside the box too.

Fell's a good player of his type and no doubt...but it;s a type of player that really rubs against the grain of what's gone on at United for the last twenty years..

Some questions lads. Please give your opinions.

Will Ramsey stay nailed-on for the season?

    Why didn't Sessegnon play today?

Rate these from 1 to 5 for the rest of the season if you're gonna buy a striker from GW6 on :

    Suarez, Rooney, Lukaku, Giroud, Benteke

    Thanks.

I have no idea for the first two, so I'm just going to give my unexpert opinion about the strikers:

      1. Giroud
      2. Lukaku
      3. Benteke
      4. Rooney
      5. Suarez

Although honestly, they all look like good options to me. I think that Giroud is comfortably number 1 for me, not just because he's scored each of the first 4 but because he's Arsenal's only striker and they look really good. The other 4 could easily be arranged in any order for me, took me forever to decide.

I had (c) RVP today...(59 pts total wth three to play)...and I'll be glad to get rid of him !!...The PL is stuffed full of great players this year and i can only look at half of them because all my moneys tied up with him...silly idea..

Lots of things I dig in this comments section, the phenomenon you're highlighting is one I don't dig (meaning, I agree with you).

Similarly, everyone going after one another for going for "stickies"--what, live you're going to put it on your CV or something?

Personally, I had a lame week, took an 8 point hit but have 5 players to go. If Southampton does well (I've got Lamb, Boruc, Shaw), things could go nicely, though. And Sturridge being healthy...
