[sbu_large_image] The Knee Jerk

Arsenal’s young gun comes to the fore to steal Mesut Ozil’s thunder. Tottenham’s icy finisher shows his worth to overshadow their own debutant, while the Gunners top scorer gives his owners a scare by limping off with a knee problem.

The Game Changer

All eyes were on Mesut Ozil’s performance on his debut and, while the German’s display exuded class, composure and the first of many assists, it was Aaron Ramsey who will hog the headlines. A brace of goals capped what has been a hugely impressive season so far for the young Welshman – a player who has suddenly emerged from the shadow of Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere, to promote himself as a true box-to-box midfielder, capable of controlling matches and scoring goals.

Ramsey’s smart volley and a slotted finish from Olivier Giroud’s pass took him to five goals in all competitions – matching his total from last season. Quite simply, Ramsey is a player reborn at a time when the Arsenal midfield looks set to be rejuvenated by Ozil’s promptings and uncanny eye for the killer pass.

While the pre-match effort concentrated on how to juggle the cash to possibly accomodate Ozil’s price tag, Ramsey is available for just 5.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), £5.8 million in the Sky Sports game and £2.5 million in the Sun Dream Team – a game which has him ranked as the top midfielder.

Today’s returns will surely see his stock soar further, as Fantasy managers seriously consider loading up on Arsenal’s attacking assets as the creativity and opportunities for goals in the Gunners camp hits new heights. Indeed, with Giroud finding consistency up front, there’s even a case for a switch in emphasis, away from the heavy hitting midfield trio of Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla and Ozil with a Ramsey/Giroud pairing currently offering strong value.

A late injury scare for Giroud may just change all that, however. The Frenchman was withdrawn late on with a knee problem and we’re awaiting news on the extent of the damage.

The Underused

While Ramsey is the darling on one side of north London, Gylfi Sigurdsson was the toast of White Hart Lane. Given the opportunity to impress by Andre Villas-Boas, the Icelander seized the day, providing a stunning reminder of his goalscoring ability as Spurs eased past a disappointing Norwich.

Like Ozil, Spurs had their own glittering debutant on show. Christian Eriksen’s performance, embroidered by a debut assist, will doubtless have piqued the interest of Fantasy managers. It was Sigurdsson who provided the end product, however.

At just 6.9 in the FPL, we now find ourselves reassessing his potential. While Eriksen and Erik Lamela offer the glamour and excitement of new arrivals at the Lane, Siggurdsson’s talent as a Fantasy asset is proven from his season at Swansea. If he can cement his starting role, he could yet make a return to the reckoning and draw investment away from Tottenham’s expensive imports.

The Selection Poser

Giroud’s injury is an immediate concern for many – given that he is already the most popular transfer target amongst the forwards following today’s goal and assist haul, clearly there is an urgent need for clarity.

Subject to over 268,000 transfers in over the international fortnight, he has already acquired over 15,000 new owners on the back of this afternoon’s display but the bandwagon will surely slow on the back of his withdrawal.

Post-match, Wenger was asked whether the Frenchman would be fit for the midweek Champions League match against Marseille but gave little away:

“That’s my worry today after the game. We are very thin at the moment. [It is] a knee problem. He is the player at the moment that would be very difficult for us [to replace.]”

With Lukas Podolski and Yaya Sanogo out and Nicklas Bendtner far from match-fit, Wenger’s forward options are stretched to threadbare already. A potential absence for Giroud would be a massive blow to his Fantasy owners but could, in turn, promote Walcott as the central option if the prognosis proves pessimistic. Wenger’s next injury update is already eagerly awaited.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

lots of assisters getting BPS today. Eriksen, Cowie, Huddlestone amongst others.

ive spent the past fortnight thinking assisters would get zilch bonus most of the time.

        1s mostly.

Out of those who returned solely one assist:

        1s: Ozil, Huddlest'n, Eriksen
        2s: Senderos
        3s: Cowie

These 1s could be a big boost for the big-hitting mids, or give them the edge back at least

Hmm, like ENR says I think at least Eriksen and Ozil are getting bonus for their high pass completion (remember minimum 30 passes, check, up to 3 BPS for 90% pass completion). Dunno about huddlestone.

Cowie one is a bit random.

Nani -> Barfa or Ramsey this week?

If I go Barfa then I can't afford RVP in GW6. If I go Ramsey, I can.

Ramsey is such a tough one for me. I've said I won't buy in: he's not a goalscorer, plays deep, but I get the sense that he's going to come out in these types of games and score (i.e. running from deep, seems to find good space).

But out of the two I'd go with HBA. But being able to get RVP.... then maybe Ramsey. RVP will come good, I agree. It's not him at the moment, it's Man U. I'd just prepare yourself for inconsistency if you get Ram.

Yeah, agree with that. I can't believe I'm thinking of bringing him in given how much stick I've given him the past couple of seasons. But, he used to score goals before his injury, and with 5 already this season he is starting to convince me that maybe he's remembering how to score. Also, I can't see Wenger dropping him on this form, and at 5.6m he's a bargain, and huge hauls won't be expected.

The main thing for me is being able to afford RVP from GW6, and the flexibility of being able to get rid of whichever of my current front 3 also.

Must resist pulling the trigger tonight.... or maybe not...

I'm a little concerned how that will affect Ram's points.

Agreed. Our record with Arteta in the team is superb. Arteta is more disciplined than Wilshere also, so I think he would allow Ramsey to push forward more.

Never thought I'd be saying this a year ago, but Ramsey starts ahead of Wilshere for me at the moment. Big season for Jack.

Any ideas what to do with this team ? Have 2 FT's and 0.4 in the bank 🙂

    Mingolet - Given

    Kos - Terry - Coleman - Ward - Chester

    Wally - Silva - Mirallas - Coutiniho - Morrison

    Giroud - Bony - Soldado

Feel my midfield is pretty weak and Bony needs to go too! Any suggestions ? 🙂

Get Bony out. He's dropping in value, and I can't see him putting a good shift in against Pool. Rest of the team looks decent, but Kos might need to be offloaded when you get the chance. Also, is it R.Morrison or J.Morrison?

Few thoughts on bonus points so far

    1. Only 2 mids have received more than 3 bps in total so far this season. Yaya and Ben Arfa both 5.
    2. 14 defenders have scored more than 3 total bps.
    3. Olivier Giroud has scored at least 2 bps every game (2,2,3,2)
    4. If you started the season with Benteke and Giroud, they would have amassed you 17 in bps alone.
    5. 13 midfielders have scored 3 or more bps. Only Don Cowie, receiving 3 bps for Cardiff this weekend, hasn't scored a goal.
    6. Of the 13 mids who have scored 3 or more bps, only 3 mids have received bps in more than one game. Yaya, Ben Arfa and Pablo Hernandez, the rest receiving all 3 when scoring.

Extrapolate from that what you like.

I went with my gut and went 5-2-3 this week and am happy with the results. You only have to look how the points are allocating during the game to see defence are being well rewarded.

Man U v Cry game is a classic example. 2-0 win and a centre back gets the 3bps and a left full back with no goals and no assists gets 1bps. RVP scores and gets nothing.

You say that, but Rooney did manage to get all 3 BPs. I'm not denying that the new system favours defenders, but I think it's early days. Matches have been very low scoring, which means that the BPs defenders receive are deserved. Also, I think that missed chances are closely linked to a fall in BPs; I was studying Walcott, and although he was getting on the end of through balls, missed chances meant that his BPs were actually in negative!

Chelsea and Man City rotation policy is hurting their chances of winning.

I personally think that is going to come back to bite them. With players so unsure whether their positions are secure it is harder to get them to gel and perhaps the pressure affects their decision making.

Yes rotation is needed, but really good players need to be able to have the odd bad or quiet game without thinking they are in jeopardy or the pressure is too much.

    Currently have this front eight:

    Silva Wally Ramsey Oscar (Barkley)
    Giroud Benteke (Sturridge)

    0.5 in bank.

I still believe this is where the game is won or lost: I'm aware that the bonus points favor defenders keeping clean sheets, but I hate having to cling to that, once you lose it, you are unlikely to get anything out of them.

    Thinking of doing either:

    A) Wally -> Ozil (Pretty much have to do it now)

    or

    B) Oscar and Silva/Walcott -> HBA and Eriksen (Leaves me 3.2 for more tinkering later on but for a -4 hit)

    Thoughts? Leaning towards B.

Walcott's been getting so many goal chances. Could have had a hattrick today. He just needs to start putting them away. Won't be much in it between the two in my opinion but Walcott should get more goals.

Chelsea were once exciting then with Robben and Duff on the wings in Mourinho's first season. But then it got dull..I think they miss a Lampard or Drogba or Terry even to grab the one goal that;'llenable them to then prevent the other team from doing anything for the whole game so they can grab the 3 points. Eto doesn't seem quite as effective. All their playmakers aren't that kind of player, they flourish with sustained possession and by overwhelming teams. Both Mourinho and Pellegrini seemed a bit miffed with what their strongest team is.

Mourinho is underestimating teams already, epl is alot stronger then when he was around the first time and i don't think he's realized it yet from 8 to 20 the teams are way better quality wise.

Pellerini should have started his first team against stoke in a away game if it was home then fine but it wasn't. he's new to this league so i'm sure he will be learning and has an excuse but boy do city look poor so far, brilliant squad but as a team they aren't as good as they should be.

Agreed, when Mourinho came in I remember he said something like 'the league was stronger when I left'. Think he was trying to say sides were less excellent but more rounded, but it really reeked of complacency imo.

Don't understand pellegs dire squad against City. Genuinely saw a draw there the moment I saw Milner Rodwell Nasri.

Both City and Chelsea look shite to me. As do Man United, but I expected that. Liverpool, Arsenal and Everton have been the most impressive sides. I guess squad depth decides league positions, but with no europe games and Suarez back soon along with Moses, why can't Liverpool be near the top of the league by December...i want a premier league shake up..

In FPL you don't get time to dither and wait on see on most players I think. Their streak of points comes and goes like dust in the wind (if you believe in form of course).

Ramsey, Barfa. Credit to those who got their points but I probably have missed them.

I agree with Ramsey. Id put him in the 'chasing last weeks' points' category, but I think Ben Arfa should provide fairly regularly due to his sheer attacking endeavour.

I dont think these brief streaks are down to form, just sheer luck really. the luck that yaya got those 2 free kicks in the perfect area for him, and for aaron ramsey to strike that volley that well and be in the right place for it (could he do that again?)

Could be something there. I think they are both excellent players in real life, yes including Ramsey, just don't see how they're both going to get great goalscoring chances all season. Obviously I think barfa is the better FPL choice and his price reflects that, but I've had him several times and he's a inconsistent, b not the most frequent goal threat from good positions. He tends to have to score worldies, which don't come around too often.

When Ben Arfa was healthy in 11/12 he played about 16-17 games had 5 goals, 7 assists & netted 100pts or about 5.5pts per game.

He is the only real threat for NEW thus far & with their decent run of fixtures he's worth a punt at 7mil especially as goal scoring mids are at a premium with the new BPS.

That said, it gets pretty dicey for Nouveau Chateau after GW9 so buy now or just forget about it...

I don't rate a player based of 5 performances, I take their entire career into account and what I've seen. He didn't do anything against Villa, nor against Tottenham. I think people are blinded by his latest performance, and his performance against Fenerbahce, and obviously don't have the memory to remember his prior consistent horror shows. I'd love for him to prove me wrong of course, but I'm not going to change my mind based on 5 games this season and a couple last season. I'm not that fickle.
