[sbu_large_image] The Knee Jerk

Arsenal’s young gun comes to the fore to steal Mesut Ozil’s thunder. Tottenham’s icy finisher shows his worth to overshadow their own debutant, while the Gunners top scorer gives his owners a scare by limping off with a knee problem.

The Game Changer

All eyes were on Mesut Ozil’s performance on his debut and, while the German’s display exuded class, composure and the first of many assists, it was Aaron Ramsey who will hog the headlines. A brace of goals capped what has been a hugely impressive season so far for the young Welshman – a player who has suddenly emerged from the shadow of Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere, to promote himself as a true box-to-box midfielder, capable of controlling matches and scoring goals.

Ramsey’s smart volley and a slotted finish from Olivier Giroud’s pass took him to five goals in all competitions – matching his total from last season. Quite simply, Ramsey is a player reborn at a time when the Arsenal midfield looks set to be rejuvenated by Ozil’s promptings and uncanny eye for the killer pass.

While the pre-match effort concentrated on how to juggle the cash to possibly accomodate Ozil’s price tag, Ramsey is available for just 5.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), £5.8 million in the Sky Sports game and £2.5 million in the Sun Dream Team – a game which has him ranked as the top midfielder.

Today’s returns will surely see his stock soar further, as Fantasy managers seriously consider loading up on Arsenal’s attacking assets as the creativity and opportunities for goals in the Gunners camp hits new heights. Indeed, with Giroud finding consistency up front, there’s even a case for a switch in emphasis, away from the heavy hitting midfield trio of Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla and Ozil with a Ramsey/Giroud pairing currently offering strong value.

A late injury scare for Giroud may just change all that, however. The Frenchman was withdrawn late on with a knee problem and we’re awaiting news on the extent of the damage.

The Underused

While Ramsey is the darling on one side of north London, Gylfi Sigurdsson was the toast of White Hart Lane. Given the opportunity to impress by Andre Villas-Boas, the Icelander seized the day, providing a stunning reminder of his goalscoring ability as Spurs eased past a disappointing Norwich.

Like Ozil, Spurs had their own glittering debutant on show. Christian Eriksen’s performance, embroidered by a debut assist, will doubtless have piqued the interest of Fantasy managers. It was Sigurdsson who provided the end product, however.

At just 6.9 in the FPL, we now find ourselves reassessing his potential. While Eriksen and Erik Lamela offer the glamour and excitement of new arrivals at the Lane, Siggurdsson’s talent as a Fantasy asset is proven from his season at Swansea. If he can cement his starting role, he could yet make a return to the reckoning and draw investment away from Tottenham’s expensive imports.

The Selection Poser

Giroud’s injury is an immediate concern for many – given that he is already the most popular transfer target amongst the forwards following today’s goal and assist haul, clearly there is an urgent need for clarity.

Subject to over 268,000 transfers in over the international fortnight, he has already acquired over 15,000 new owners on the back of this afternoon’s display but the bandwagon will surely slow on the back of his withdrawal.

Post-match, Wenger was asked whether the Frenchman would be fit for the midweek Champions League match against Marseille but gave little away:

“That’s my worry today after the game. We are very thin at the moment. [It is] a knee problem. He is the player at the moment that would be very difficult for us [to replace.]”

With Lukas Podolski and Yaya Sanogo out and Nicklas Bendtner far from match-fit, Wenger’s forward options are stretched to threadbare already. A potential absence for Giroud would be a massive blow to his Fantasy owners but could, in turn, promote Walcott as the central option if the prognosis proves pessimistic. Wenger’s next injury update is already eagerly awaited.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

How long will those clown in charge of Man City last? December/January is my guess.

Someone new to spend another £150 million in one transfer window. It's ok though, Etihad just sponsored the door to the toilets in Etihad stadium for £200 million a year on top of the stadium deal so they can afford it and not break FFP rules.

Check out Walcott v Ramsey in the comparison tool.

Backs up the preconceptions - Walcott getting more big chances (in the box), Ramsey shooting from further out but actually converting.

          Ramsey would start over Flamini.

He's been on form since the end of last season too.

I'd get him, but too many Arsenal players...

At 5.6, the only thing you're losing is a spot for another Arsenal player.

Oh no question Ramsey would start over Flamini. He's absolutely nailed on right now. When Caz and Arteta return it'll be 2 of Ramsey/Arteta/Flamini/Wilshere in the double pivot. I still fancy Ramsey to start then, and that's at least a month away. Been great since the runin yep.

By "with Caz out I'll have to consider getting Ramsey" I mean I think Ramsey will have even more shots than usual, taking some of the shots Caz would be.

You'd think Ramsey should be nailed on with this form, but there's just so much competition. 6 MFs are injured at the moment. So much depth it's like we're Chelsea.

I think Flamini is quite necessary, he plays a better CDM than Arteta- it seems.

                Ah, I see.

You're making me want to get Ramsey in now.

I'd better be careful 🙂 Flamini is a great 'destroyer' to have, would still lean towards Wenger giving Arteta the nod over Flamini as he believes in possession football over winning the ball back (doesn't always work of course haha).

strange thought im having right now: how does experience that pundits bang on about actually help footballers and teams. i mean, surely a professional footballer should have enough experience by the age of about 19 or 20 to know their sport well enough and how to react in certain situations. What kind of experience does a 30 year old footballer have over a 20 year old one? they're just 2 guys that have played a lot of football

I think 30 yr olds are better at dealing with the pressure, making decisions based on past experiences and specific similar situations they have encountered (where 19/20 yr olds may lack experience in top level matches) or even the tendency of what teams/players do in particular situations. They will probably be better at knowing when to commit forward, when to drop back, when/where not to commit stupid fouls etc. But i think the main thing is the mental aspect, not letting frustration boil over (which i think requires a lot of time and in-game experience). I used to play tennis quite seriously and these are just my opinions based on that

A 30 year old footballer has ten years more experience than a 20 year old. Ten years extra of mastering an art. Ten more years of top flight football. Ten more years of getting physically stronger. A 19 year old would have played barely any games compared to a 30 year old. It's fairly obvious to me the advantages that ten years more experience brings.

Regarding Ramsey. Been reading through all the comments of the day as time allows. Just caught up, again.

Am I the only one who heard Wenger talking about Ramsey after a Fenerbache game in Champion's League and saying that he is a different player this year, that his play has gone up a level, et cetera?

For 5.6, for a couple of weeks while Cazorla is out, seems less knee-jerky and more like a decent punt. (Certainly better than a few other punts that gained traction in these parts last week.)

Yeah that's what I expected, I'm just not a fan of Wilshere and Ramsey as our CMs. Need one with a defensive mindset. Their defensive positioning off the ball is pretty dismal.

              Yeah, Flamini does provide that.

To WC or not to WC? If not what are your suggestions? Thinking Lescott wont play much and some players arent getting me points (Coutinho, Mirallas, Silva injured...)

Pretty obvious transfer this week looks like Mirallas > Bern Arfa.

Will make the transfer tomorrow (before Mirallas drop and B.Arfa rise)

    Migs, Lewis
    Coleman, Collins, Yanga-Mbiwa, Murner, Ward
    Walcott, Coutinho, B.Arfa, Brady, Williams
    RVP, Benteke, Soldado

0.5 banked after transfer. Anything worth a hit there?

I'd probably rather move Soldado for Giroud that ship Mirallas for HBA. Mirallas looked good today, much better than he has previously. And HBA is always an injury worry.

        Just my two cents.

Lone striker in an attack-minded team, penalty taker and is supported by Eriksen and Lennon (scheduled to return next week). On the other hand Mirallas's price is dropping like a rock. So Mirallas out for me.

Can anyone remember the poster on here Saturday morning saying Lamela was guaranteed to start because his brother, Brian Lamela tweeted saying he would? The guy was very disparaging to anyone suggesting "Brian Lamela" is not a reliable source of information. Would quite like to rub his face in it if I see him around.

This is why you have to trust your guts.

Asking and getting someone suggestion and idea are used to help you to have more information. If you only use one source of information.

It's your fault from the start. Clearly you don't think the negative side trusting the guy named Brian Lamela. We all know that Lamela is new player which is harder to be starter.

And there was a news on Friday in interview of AVB that Lamela likely won't play against Norwich.

Don't just look at the possibility of he will play but also look at the possibility of why he won't play.

My 2 cents on the Ramsey debate:

    1) He will generally play in the double pivot alongside either Arteta, Wilshere or Flamini, and so is not in direct competition with Ozil, Wally, Caz, Pod etc.
    2) He is nailed on in this position at least until Arteta returns (at least 2-3 weeks away), so if nothing else he is a decent short term punt for the good Arsenal fixtures.
    3) When Arteta returns, I think he still starts alongside Arteta with Flamini as back up and Wilshere needing to up his game to get a start (Wilshere may also push Caz for starts in the front 3 mid spots)
    4) He won't be as explosive as the front 3 mids, but at 5.6m for a top 4 club, he is a steal imo.

He is above Wilshere in the pecking order as it stands as well (when everyone is fit of course)

Agreed. Arteta won't be rushed back either, so I think Ramsey is nailed on for at least 3-4 weeks.

Yep he's a decent short term punt until everyone is back fit and ready. If he maintains his form he should maintain his start. However in a few weeks time you should begin to expect potential rotation and you'll find yourself needing to trade him out. Not sure its worth the transfer personally.
