[sbu_large_image] The Knee Jerk

Arsenal’s young gun comes to the fore to steal Mesut Ozil’s thunder. Tottenham’s icy finisher shows his worth to overshadow their own debutant, while the Gunners top scorer gives his owners a scare by limping off with a knee problem.

The Game Changer

All eyes were on Mesut Ozil’s performance on his debut and, while the German’s display exuded class, composure and the first of many assists, it was Aaron Ramsey who will hog the headlines. A brace of goals capped what has been a hugely impressive season so far for the young Welshman – a player who has suddenly emerged from the shadow of Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere, to promote himself as a true box-to-box midfielder, capable of controlling matches and scoring goals.

Ramsey’s smart volley and a slotted finish from Olivier Giroud’s pass took him to five goals in all competitions – matching his total from last season. Quite simply, Ramsey is a player reborn at a time when the Arsenal midfield looks set to be rejuvenated by Ozil’s promptings and uncanny eye for the killer pass.

While the pre-match effort concentrated on how to juggle the cash to possibly accomodate Ozil’s price tag, Ramsey is available for just 5.6 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), £5.8 million in the Sky Sports game and £2.5 million in the Sun Dream Team – a game which has him ranked as the top midfielder.

Today’s returns will surely see his stock soar further, as Fantasy managers seriously consider loading up on Arsenal’s attacking assets as the creativity and opportunities for goals in the Gunners camp hits new heights. Indeed, with Giroud finding consistency up front, there’s even a case for a switch in emphasis, away from the heavy hitting midfield trio of Theo Walcott, Santi Cazorla and Ozil with a Ramsey/Giroud pairing currently offering strong value.

A late injury scare for Giroud may just change all that, however. The Frenchman was withdrawn late on with a knee problem and we’re awaiting news on the extent of the damage.

The Underused

While Ramsey is the darling on one side of north London, Gylfi Sigurdsson was the toast of White Hart Lane. Given the opportunity to impress by Andre Villas-Boas, the Icelander seized the day, providing a stunning reminder of his goalscoring ability as Spurs eased past a disappointing Norwich.

Like Ozil, Spurs had their own glittering debutant on show. Christian Eriksen’s performance, embroidered by a debut assist, will doubtless have piqued the interest of Fantasy managers. It was Sigurdsson who provided the end product, however.

At just 6.9 in the FPL, we now find ourselves reassessing his potential. While Eriksen and Erik Lamela offer the glamour and excitement of new arrivals at the Lane, Siggurdsson’s talent as a Fantasy asset is proven from his season at Swansea. If he can cement his starting role, he could yet make a return to the reckoning and draw investment away from Tottenham’s expensive imports.

The Selection Poser

Giroud’s injury is an immediate concern for many – given that he is already the most popular transfer target amongst the forwards following today’s goal and assist haul, clearly there is an urgent need for clarity.

Subject to over 268,000 transfers in over the international fortnight, he has already acquired over 15,000 new owners on the back of this afternoon’s display but the bandwagon will surely slow on the back of his withdrawal.

Post-match, Wenger was asked whether the Frenchman would be fit for the midweek Champions League match against Marseille but gave little away:

“That’s my worry today after the game. We are very thin at the moment. [It is] a knee problem. He is the player at the moment that would be very difficult for us [to replace.]”

With Lukas Podolski and Yaya Sanogo out and Nicklas Bendtner far from match-fit, Wenger’s forward options are stretched to threadbare already. A potential absence for Giroud would be a massive blow to his Fantasy owners but could, in turn, promote Walcott as the central option if the prognosis proves pessimistic. Wenger’s next injury update is already eagerly awaited.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Should I replace them? Especially Brady.

I wouldn't. I brought in Brady and, despite him scoring 2, so too did premo mids. He has good fixtures coming up; can't be too trigger happy because he wasn't involved in their one scoring play. He's a great player.

Other than being on pens and cheap I'm not sure Brady has much going for him.

Chester is nailed on at 4m - you can't ask anymore for 4m and Hull's defence isn't shocking.

Hull have favorable fixtures coming up. Chester is nailed on and Brady is on the left of a front 3 and on pens. You can't ask for much more at their prices. Cardiff is not all that bad of a team, particularly at home. I think Brady could be one of the bargains of the season, and Chester is good for the next 10 weeks or so.

Why does everyone keep saying Eriksen is more of a facilitator than goalscorer? 12 goals, 7 assists last season is what I see. He's had more goals scored than assists every season. I haven't actually seen him play. Did he not look much of a threat to score today?

With Chester and Mariappa probably nailed in okay defences (well not dire!) at 4m you might be best going for them and using the extra - I'm not convinced there's much leap in value at 4.5 this season

So nobody in the top 10 has RVP, best is 13th and from then on its only about 1 in 10.

Pretty clear at this point anyway that Non-RVP teams are gaining the upper hand.

So far this weeks fixtures still point to a strong swing to defence and its not just 0-0 and 1-0, in the 2-0 win by Man U, 2 of the 3 bps allocation went to defenders with the top points going to a central defender who did next to nothing. (Ferdinand)

Strong Midfielders continued there poor run with the dream team having Siggurdson, Whittingham, Sidwell, Ben Arfa and Ramsey. HBA is the most expensive at 7.1.

I really do think we need to rethink our structure this year it is going to be different and its not just a freak run of clean sheets.

RVP isn't scoring the highest amount of points of all strikers. Why would the top players in the world currently have 14 million of that? Makes perfect sense. If he goes crazy, the top 10 will change and RVP teams will be the norm up there.

Decent midfield will come good, you've got to get genuine goalscorers/assisters to make it work. The kind that will get you returns in 2 out of 3 games.

Thats because most got him at the beginning when his fixtures were terrible.
Also many of thiose teams filled up with rubbish like Anelka , they not failing because of RVP but because they picked useless players around him.

Those who bought him this week had the advantage of picking the best supporting cast . Im quite happy with my RVP team. Expect to be in and out with him , not a season keeper

Reasoning went thusly, Arsenal defenders are toxic, no one else apparently wants to score goals, so three attacking spots for three nailed on attackers, one of whom will be only slightly more expensive than Brady/Kim.

    JUST A HAT
Any Arsenal fans think Ramsey can keep up his scoring form? This happened 3 seasons ago when Nasri all of a sudden started banging them in but everybody just wrote him off saying he can't keep it up but he actually did.

Are people just saying "lol Ramsey" to follow the crowd again or is he generally not a good prospect?

He is the real deal. Don't be put off by the cheap price tag. He's been excellent so far and nailed on because of injury. He'll keep Arteta, Rosicky and Wiltshire out the side too. He's not so much a gamble as a must have at that price.

When Wenger decides he's a better RB than Sagna basically. Mert should be back anytime so don't see Jenks and Sagna starting often, because I can't see Sagna holding down CB against Mert/Kos/Verm.

Should be an image macro or something.

I think he was shit at right back last year. He has come out and said he didn't have a proper preseason last season and was still basically injured. Has been a lot better prepared this season. Also better at CB than RB because he can't run anymore.

So basically, he can still head a ball, that's it. Might as well go to Stoke.

Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham have a certain amount of continuity in their weekly squad selections. But there seems to be no method to the madness when it comes to Chelsea, Utd and City. Anyone feel that the title favourites are suffering because of over-rotation?

I agree with in that, but I always thought that depth in the squad helped win Capital One Cups, FA Cups and was useful in times of injury crises. But you always focus on playing your best side in the most important competition. These managers are showing complacency imo.

Man u are struggling because they are very weak in the middle and dont have the fergie factor anymore. Man city have a new boss and will take time to settle. Chelsea have no striker and rotate too much in midfield.
