Clean sheets are the order of the day once again as Southampton and West Ham play out a goalless draw in Sunday’s only fixture. While the two sides continue to impress defensively, their inability to find the net is a real concern – both have notched just twice over the opening four fixtures:

The Game Changer

Jussi Jaaskelainen’s heroics between the sticks were once again crucial to the Hammers’ prospects today. Helping his side to a vital point at St Mary’s, the Finnish star denied Mauricio Pochettino’s side with five saves to register his third clean sheet in four matches – with just a single goal conceded to Stoke so far, the London outfit have been superb at the back and somewhat atoned for the problems up front which have seen them fail to score in three successive matches.

Up next for the Hammers is a home game against an Everton side that have one goal in three before a trip to Hull – more defensive points look likely before the schedule takes a turn for the worse from Gameweek 7 onwards.

The Underused

Seemingly out of favour under Pochettino, Nathaniel Clyne returned to the Southampton first XI for the first time this term. The right-back turned in an impressive showing and with a couple of bonus points also on the cards, he could return to Fantasy radars after shedding over 24,000 owners and dropping down to 4.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – at least 0.2 cheaper than any other regular in the Saints’ defence.

With four kind home games (CPL, SWA, FUL, HUL) and a trip to Stoke in the next seven, Clyne looks set for further returns as Pochettino’s look to continue a run that has now seen them concede just twice in the opening four Gameweeks.

The Selection Poser

Clyne’s return was one of three changes from Pochettino today as Luke Shaw and Jay Rodriguez were also named in the starting line-up. While Shaw’s return was expected after he proved his fitness for the England Under 21s over the last week, his owners will be concerned after he was subbed off towards the end of the match – the player has since taken to twitter to reveal his withdrawal was due to cramp but his propensity for picking up niggles and failing to last 90 minutes is clearly becoming an issue.

Pochettino’s decision to hand Rodriguez a chance proved frustrating for James Ward-Prowse’s new owners. The youngster had started all of the first three Gameweeks and with a share of set-piece duties and kindly price tag, he was acquired by an extra 57,000 new FPL owners over the two-week international break. Handed an 19-minute second-half cameo towards the end of the stalemate, Ward-Prowse could be set for an exodus if Rodriguez keeps his place.

For the visitors, the second-half introduction of Razvan Rat could be a sign that Sam Allardyce is set to alter his full-back options. The summer signing hadn’t featured in the league prior to today but was sent on just after the hour mark in a move that allowed the versatile Joey O’Brien to switch from left-back to the opposite flank and saw Guy Demel withdrawn instead – perhaps an ominous sign for the Ivorian’s owners over the weeks to come.

Luke Shaw's propensity to be subbed off before the 90mins: making him a better choice due to a slightly better chance of a clean sheet? (i.e. playing at least 60 mins and avoiding last minute goals)

39 Games into the season, i've had a look at where the Bonus Points have gone, and the results are interesting:

Total Bonus Points awarded : 288 (7.4 pts per game)

    Goalkeepers: 15 (5.2%)
    Defenders : 144 (50%)
    Midfielders: 66 (22.9%)
    Forwards: 63 (21.9%)

The very low return from midfielders is surprising, but i suppose a lot of the expected heavy hitting midfielders haven't got going. still though, the new system does seem to favour defenders and top class midfield performances will continue to go unrewarded.eg Gareth Barry gave a masterclass yesterday and got 1 BPS (0 Bonus). Naismith had a poor game, gave the ball away continuously, scored a goal of course, and got 12 BPS (3 Bonus).

The classic midfield player who doesn't score will continuously be ignored.

A or sit tight. I started this season with Soldado and was a wrench to let go for RVP with my WC last week. Tottenham's fixtures are great and he will get chances. It's a lot easier to live with missed points if you don't bring a player in than it is after just letting said player go.

Watch Sturridge's performance tomorrow, and Suarez next week (assume he's back for Southampton?) then make the call. It gives Soldado 2 more weeks to impress too.

Some really good consistent players are having a mare this year (noticeable by their absence on the forum) 😉
It's a really funny start, I expect most of them will bounce back and many early leaders fade..

I've always liked Moses, but i think he'll be as effective as Aspas, who got an assist in his first game, everyone considered him, and he's been a bit rubbish since then.

Well sometimes it's just there to get a single player in one go rather than taking a hit. The most expensive players do not necessarily score the most. See RVP.

about 0.5 in the bank is handy as it gives you options to upgrade and alter slightly. if your at 0 and your team start losing value you're in trouble for decent replacements without making 2 transfers and taking hits.

I have 247 points so far, ranked 120,000. The leader is on 314. How much of a gap is "too much" to make up after gameweek 4 considering the leaders most likely have exceptional teams?

It's a long old way, but from where you are, you would need a long run of exceptional GW's to catch up. I'm 30,000th and I don't hold much hope.

Still too early methinks. Double GWs, injuries, yet-to-be-recognized-heroes etc. Captain choices alone can cause huge swings. That gap is not too much.
