Our final glance at Gameweek 4 pays tribute to the latest Welshman to take north London by storm. Finds us examining just why Arsenal’s flourishing form and upcoming schedule is proving hard to ignore, while attempting to explain why Fantasy managers continue to be frustrated by a lack of attacking returns as defences remain on top.

The Player

What’s left to be said on Aaron Ramsey? In the space of four Gamweeks he’s gone from a mild-mannered mid-price filler, to a roaring Fantasy bandwagon that’s demanded our attention and immediate investment.

His returns from Saturday’s Sunderland victory have forced the hand of many, with 235,000 drafting in the Welshman as additional coverage of Arsenal’s attacking potential (more on that below). When you examine the evidence, it’s hard to deny the allure.

If you’re a member, I’d strongly advise glancing at the KPI Attacking tables for midfielders and examining the Arsenal midfield. Ramsey’s progress shown in that table, in terms of goal attempts and shots on target, is marked. Use the comparison tool to assess Ramsey’s average values this season compared to last and again, there’s clear indication that this is a player in the ascendency – we’re not just talking about a sudden upturn in Fantasy returns – Ramsey’s influence in attacking areas in terms of involvement and effectiveness looks to be on the rise.

While the indicators look positive, then, we’re only talking about a small data sample. Plus, with just four Gameweeks down, the Ramsey bandwagon has all the ingredients of early season promise that could evaporate by the time the busy Winter schedule kicks in, along with teamsheet rotation.

Even so, at just 5.8 and rising in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and with Arsenal’s fixtures providing further incentive for investment, there’s little doubt that Ramsey looks a desirable option. When a mid-price asset in a title-challenging side shows goalscoring form, you have to take notice.

The Team

We can’t look beyond Arsenal. Ramsey’s rapid ascent is just one component of the new attacking impetus on show in Arsene Wenger’s side. Olivier Giroud’s progress has also been remarkable – four goals in as many games has suddenly seen the Frenchman’s ownership soar and with an assured supply of opportunities provided by Mesut Ozil, there can be few doubts that Giroud will have every chance to continue his current spree. Confidence, supply and the fixtures are all in his favour – like Ramsey, it’s difficult to deny the credibility of this bandwagon.

Ozil continues to attract investment himself, although there is a strong argument to support the case for keeping faith with Theo Walcott. A hat-trick of opportunities came his way at the Stadium of Light and, having established himself an efficient midfield goalscorer last season, we’ve every reason to expect Walcott to ignite very soon.

With so many riches on offer and the momemtum with Arsenal, Fantasy managers have to consider just how far they go with coverage of Wenger’s attackers. With Giroud and Ramsey so convincing and Walcott a formerly trusted source of points, seemingly on the verge of returns, there are difficult decisions to be made.

One thing is certain, regardless of schedule and any improvement in Arsenal’s defensive resolve, it seems unlikely that any Fantasy manager will be turning to their back four, given how precious the option of three Arsenal attacking players looks at this moment in time.

The Talking Point

The season continues to be an extraordinary one, perhaps for all the wrong reasons. Before Monday night’s four-goal blitz in Wales, this campaign was the lowest Premier League season for goals, averaging just 1.9 per match. Last season we saw 2.8 goals per game.

It’s a bizarre trend, with little explanation offered up. There’s a feeling that teams are already fearing defeat from the off – a symptom we’ve often seen evident amongst the newly promoted each season, but now perhaps on show from those destined for mid-table or fearful of a tough nine months that may have them dally around the drop-zone.

The title contenders have also stalled. Arsenal aside, there’s little doubt that United, City and particularly Chelsea are currently stuck in second gear when it comes to attacking fluidity. Given that all three are in transition with new managers at the helm, perhaps we should have anticipated such an adjustment time. Again, are these teams looking to avoid defeat at all costs rather than opting to go for the throat with their team selection and tactics?

Tottenham and Everton – teams outside of the top four last season but associated with the potential for goals and Fantasy returns – are themselves going through change. Spurs are coming to terms with life without Gareth Bale, while Everton learning to prioritise a passing game over the blood and thunder of their previous attacking approach under David Moyes.

Maybe that’s all the explanation we need. Maybe it’s clear that it will take time for all these teams to adjust, for their heavy hitting players to emerge as a true force.

In the meantime, Fantasy managers appear well advised to look at established acts – Arsenal and Liverpool – two teams that have, in the main, been settled over the summer and who have already shown the benefit in attacking terms.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Jedinak Brady is pretty weak sauce for your midfield... wait on some news on Silva/Coutinho. If they are out for a while, ditch one. If they are fit, upgrade Jedi/Brady for Moses. Other than that, looks pretty good to me. Lambert Soldado Tekkers are a good front-line, even though Sold and Lambert haven't been firing lately they've got gready fixtures coming up, are the main men in their teams and on penos.

Tough one. You will probably get some more news on the length of his injury before deadline, if he seems likely to miss more than one GW I'd sell for Moses. I'm assuming it's for a free and you don't have any other priorities.

It's not an absolutely necessary transfer because both Moses and Ramsey will soon have competition for their places - but if you have nothing else pressing then you could try it - you can always swap back later if you want.

My plan is to transfer Toure out this week. But still unsure what to do

The original plan was to transfer him out for a £4.5m option such as Wisdom or Yanga Mbwia. This would allow me to upgrade Nolan to Michu (or equivalent) next week.

The other plan is to use some of the £1.2m to get a big hitter, possibly in the form of Walker.

    What do you think?

    Current team

    Boruc
    Zab - Mert - Collins
    Walcott - Coutinho. - Silva - Nolan
    Giroud - Soldado - Lambert

So Rooney & RVP seem like they're having a bit of a spat?

I think it's too late to prioritize any big changes... RVP -> Rooney is sideways at best, sure it'll free up some cash but I can see it leading to taking a hit since you're using a precious FT. With the fixtures coming up it's tough to going from having a united striker to not having one, i.e doing RVP -> 9M-ish striker.

Overall though, Rooney playing so advanced and (seemingly) getting so much gametime is a bad thing for RVP owners.

Yeah but thinking ditching Utd altogether and going Sturridge (and the Suarez once settled) as Liverpools fixtures are also very good.

Maybe pick up Kagawa in midfield for a bit of Utd coverage once he's more assured of starts.

Both Rooney & RVP are being divs.

Avoiding the big rotation sides at all costs. Did the same last season with great results. Also not sure on the form of either City or Chelsea, they seem to lack harmony/balance somehow. Although I have to admit Zab is the one that stands out from those teams. Really rate him.

        Yeah good point on Ramsey.

Just in terms of tripling on Arsenal. I don't see a problem with getting in Ramsey as 4th midfielder and 3 of Ozil, Walcott and Giroud. You are then planning on picking up the points from your 2 big hitters in the same way you would have done before the Ramsey bandwagon. 4th midfielders are generally there to pick up inconsistent but useful points (and I think Ramsey looks like doing that in the short term). However, 3 of the big hitters in attack is too much for me (even with the fixtures I think better options remain.

I plan to use my next 2 FT to reduce this but there were no better options for my midfield. So figured why not. If ozil assisrs giroud I get points, if walcott assists giroud I get points etc.

The price difference is pretty big and means instead of Chester you can Baines at the back. I'm holding RVP at the moment, but once the fpl landscape is more settled in a few weeks Rooney may well be the better option. We've already seen RVP be protected by Moyes and Rooney needs game time to stay fit.

Why are people wildcarding?! I'm usually all for an early wildcard, but if you ask me (which no one has admittedly) there isn't a single excellent midfield option yet. Eriksen not proven yet, Ozil not proven yet, Ben Arfa always explodes causing bandwagons then does nothing, Ramsey surely not going to keep this up, Michu 1 goal and an assist in 4 games.

I wasn't planning to... had a decent team lined up with no injuries. But my season just wont come off so I have to react. There are less goals scored this season, so a shift in balance was needed. Also there are some interesting MF players emerging, I'd say. Özil, Eriksen, Barfa, Barkley etc

And the other reason was to do RVP => Rooney

Michu - fixtures and hitting form
Eriksen - Had a class debut looks to have adapted immediately to the PL.
Walcott (if you believe the stats)
Ozil - has also had a class debut and looks to have adapted immediately to the PL
HBA - When he's hot he's HOT. Get him now before he gets injured
Lampard - Assuming he gets rested in midweek games he should be set to start PL games
Barkley - Seems to be the real deal and a great budget option

Soldado is on the chopping block for me, but I actually still have a great deal of faith in him. (Other forwards are Giroud and Sturridge who I'll keep whist they keep up this level of performance)

I'd need to find some extra cash from somewhere if I were to get Rooney and since I'm selling Silva this week there's a chance to raise the necessary funds. Trouble is I was set on switching him to Michu but that leaves me short.

      Now I'm all confused 🙁

I dropped Soldado for Giroud this week. So you'd do well to captain him.

Tekkers' single shot on goal was troubling and their fixtures are nothing to write home about, but then neither was ars/che DGW and look what happened.

Ramsey is the guy who's buying Rooney for me, if I get him.

You'd think we'd like having all these good options available to us but frankly it's a bloody nightmare.

    Afternoon all.

On my wildcard, having a blast playing with the possibilities. Looking at Newcastle and Swansea fixtures, I'm very tempted to get some of their defensive coverage - anyone else thinking the same? Both teams have managed CSs where you would expect to see them (whu, wba and ful), but both teams are under the radar because of the opposition they've faced to date (tot, mun, liv, mci and Benteke). Opinions differ. Everyone agrees that the clean sheets cannot continue at this rate. But even at normal rates, clean sheets for the right defender can be worth up to 7 points now so the premium defenders who get 15-20 clean sheets for the season could outscore similarly priced midfielders.
