Our final glance at Gameweek 4 pays tribute to the latest Welshman to take north London by storm. Finds us examining just why Arsenal’s flourishing form and upcoming schedule is proving hard to ignore, while attempting to explain why Fantasy managers continue to be frustrated by a lack of attacking returns as defences remain on top.

The Player

What’s left to be said on Aaron Ramsey? In the space of four Gamweeks he’s gone from a mild-mannered mid-price filler, to a roaring Fantasy bandwagon that’s demanded our attention and immediate investment.

His returns from Saturday’s Sunderland victory have forced the hand of many, with 235,000 drafting in the Welshman as additional coverage of Arsenal’s attacking potential (more on that below). When you examine the evidence, it’s hard to deny the allure.

If you’re a member, I’d strongly advise glancing at the KPI Attacking tables for midfielders and examining the Arsenal midfield. Ramsey’s progress shown in that table, in terms of goal attempts and shots on target, is marked. Use the comparison tool to assess Ramsey’s average values this season compared to last and again, there’s clear indication that this is a player in the ascendency – we’re not just talking about a sudden upturn in Fantasy returns – Ramsey’s influence in attacking areas in terms of involvement and effectiveness looks to be on the rise.

While the indicators look positive, then, we’re only talking about a small data sample. Plus, with just four Gameweeks down, the Ramsey bandwagon has all the ingredients of early season promise that could evaporate by the time the busy Winter schedule kicks in, along with teamsheet rotation.

Even so, at just 5.8 and rising in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and with Arsenal’s fixtures providing further incentive for investment, there’s little doubt that Ramsey looks a desirable option. When a mid-price asset in a title-challenging side shows goalscoring form, you have to take notice.

The Team

We can’t look beyond Arsenal. Ramsey’s rapid ascent is just one component of the new attacking impetus on show in Arsene Wenger’s side. Olivier Giroud’s progress has also been remarkable – four goals in as many games has suddenly seen the Frenchman’s ownership soar and with an assured supply of opportunities provided by Mesut Ozil, there can be few doubts that Giroud will have every chance to continue his current spree. Confidence, supply and the fixtures are all in his favour – like Ramsey, it’s difficult to deny the credibility of this bandwagon.

Ozil continues to attract investment himself, although there is a strong argument to support the case for keeping faith with Theo Walcott. A hat-trick of opportunities came his way at the Stadium of Light and, having established himself an efficient midfield goalscorer last season, we’ve every reason to expect Walcott to ignite very soon.

With so many riches on offer and the momemtum with Arsenal, Fantasy managers have to consider just how far they go with coverage of Wenger’s attackers. With Giroud and Ramsey so convincing and Walcott a formerly trusted source of points, seemingly on the verge of returns, there are difficult decisions to be made.

One thing is certain, regardless of schedule and any improvement in Arsenal’s defensive resolve, it seems unlikely that any Fantasy manager will be turning to their back four, given how precious the option of three Arsenal attacking players looks at this moment in time.

The Talking Point

The season continues to be an extraordinary one, perhaps for all the wrong reasons. Before Monday night’s four-goal blitz in Wales, this campaign was the lowest Premier League season for goals, averaging just 1.9 per match. Last season we saw 2.8 goals per game.

It’s a bizarre trend, with little explanation offered up. There’s a feeling that teams are already fearing defeat from the off – a symptom we’ve often seen evident amongst the newly promoted each season, but now perhaps on show from those destined for mid-table or fearful of a tough nine months that may have them dally around the drop-zone.

The title contenders have also stalled. Arsenal aside, there’s little doubt that United, City and particularly Chelsea are currently stuck in second gear when it comes to attacking fluidity. Given that all three are in transition with new managers at the helm, perhaps we should have anticipated such an adjustment time. Again, are these teams looking to avoid defeat at all costs rather than opting to go for the throat with their team selection and tactics?

Tottenham and Everton – teams outside of the top four last season but associated with the potential for goals and Fantasy returns – are themselves going through change. Spurs are coming to terms with life without Gareth Bale, while Everton learning to prioritise a passing game over the blood and thunder of their previous attacking approach under David Moyes.

Maybe that’s all the explanation we need. Maybe it’s clear that it will take time for all these teams to adjust, for their heavy hitting players to emerge as a true force.

In the meantime, Fantasy managers appear well advised to look at established acts – Arsenal and Liverpool – two teams that have, in the main, been settled over the summer and who have already shown the benefit in attacking terms.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I watched Valencia last night and just my twopence worth :
He's strong , fast and reliable.
He loves to get into the box.
He has an unusual delivery on crosses , it's all power with him.
I think he's nailed on because of his work rate.
It's possible he may get a lot if assists if others around him can convert his deadly crosses ,
It's also possible his crosses may pass everyone by !
He's more than capable of scoring .
I thought Rooney looked hungry and reinvigorated to be honest , he seemed angry and it's this aggression that brings the best out of Wayne.
Summarising a little ,looking at fixtures and inevitable form of both Rooney and rvp Antonio Valencia could be gold as we've seen in the past , I just wonder why in training that some of his short commons aren't pointed out to him .
I'm not getting him in right now , I am watching tho , he could be the way into Man Utd mf more so than Nani - Moyes loves this kinda player and im gonna go out on a limb here and state that Kagawa doesnt fit the current system with Rvp and Rooney now firmly established up top.
Lastly I expect Rooney and Rvp to deliver 50 + goals between them in the league this season ,somebody's got to assist them.

Totally Agree with you!...Valencia is nailed on and will get assist but not many. United has Fellaini (who made good forward passes last night), Carrick, Evra and Even Rooney to provide the assist. Plus whoever plays in the Left Wing position (Kagawa,Young,Nani or Giggs) even they will rack up the assist. Right now Rooney, RVP along with defenders are the best players to go in for United FPL wise!

Valencia's best season was when Wayne was playing up top. With the likelihood of Wayne playing up front more regularly this season perhaps we will see more of those crosses converted. Its plausible that Valencia could be set for a very strong season indeed. I'll be monitoring.

Reluctantly agree about Kagawa. I was so pleased when I saw his name on the teamsheet, eagerly awaiting a display to prove a point to Moyes. But he just didn't really get going, he always seemed to be a little bit out of the action. I don't think that was his fault, just the way the rest of the team were playing didn't suit him.

Evra's poor defensive play left the Utds left exposed meaning Kagawa kept needing to run back and cover, he isn't a left winger - he needs to play through the middle behind a striker.

I don't think Suarez will stop Sturridge's goal scoring and in many respects it could enhance it as Suarez is brilliant at drawing players in, which will create space for Sturridge. I suspect Rodgers will play

4-2-3-1 - with the 3 positions behind Sturridge being taken by Coutinho, Suarez and Aspas but would not write of Moses either.

This year's bonus system really is so crazy. Regardless of more clean sheets than usual, defenders' prospects have shot up so much due to BPS, especially the ties which see several defenders getting BPS in one game

It is hard to ignore. in a few weeks I can see myself upgrading chester to baines/ivanovic/vidic and playing AT LEAST 4 defenders every week, sometimes 5.

On a WC myself and it seems so unnatural to go for big names at the back. TBF some of the cheaper defenders have done quite well as well like Fonte, Whittaker, Collins, Wilson and Coleman(5m)

True, pretty much ALL defenders seem to be good value under the new system.

That, for me, is an argument to have an expensive defence. If a player is expensive & still good value, you are spending your money as effectively as possible. Yes you will as such have a weirdly barren midfield, which won't look right especially after last season.

IMO, it is pretty hard for an expensive midfielder to justify a 9+ pricetag this season, given then relatively fewer bonus points. The same goes for attackers.. if giroud, sturridge, benteke hadn't had such amazing starts, we'd be discussing that their bonus returns are in decline too (I already noticed sturridge has 5 BPs which last year would have been 11).

I'm not so sure if indeed some cheaper defenders also provide good value then I think its better to have a slightly more balanced approach at the back. I'll likely go for a couple of cheapish defenders then Coleman and a couple of heavy's at the back.

I think its still wise to have some semblance of team balance with one or two expensive-ish midfielders such as Walcott/Ozil, Eriksen/Lampard. Its handy so when another expensive mid suddenly hits form you can make the switch. Midfielders will start scoring FPL points sooner rather than later imo.

Midfielders will score, for sure. It is harder for them to justify their value than it was last year though.

                No. I'm talking about bonus-wise

If a midfielder/ attacker scores they don't get 2 or 3bp as easily as before

As I said with sturridge, he's already 6 points worse off than he would've been under last season's BP system

Oh yes I see. That is true and it does warrant playing 4 at the back. I think 5 might be going a tad far though.

I've gone for Coleman - Vidic - Walker- Chester - Wilson. Think at least three defenders you'd play week in week out is key. There is value in premium defenders though. Vidic's 6m is a steal considering his bonus potential when there's a clean sheet.

I've got coleman-enrique-koscielny-obrien (yes should've got collins but shit happens)

Except for v bad fix I'm happy to play them every week.

Then I have Chester, and I really prefer the idea of upgrading him than going from a cheap-mid midfielder.

Baines could be amazing this season. I can't get him out of my head. No attacking returns *yet* but still had plenty of bonus points. When he fires... BOOM
