Wayne Rooney scores twice, while Robin Van Persie is also in the goals as United see off Bayer Leverkusen in David Moyes’ first European match in charge. Vincent Kompany is back for City ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby, Olivier Giroud returns to training for Arsenal and Bryan Ruiz is sidelined with an ankle strain for Fulham.

Rooney Bags a Brace

Wayne Rooney picked up from where he left off against Palace at the weekend by bagging a brace in United’s 4-2 Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen. Partnering Robin Van Persie once again, Rooney also provided an assist before being withdrawn on 84 minutes. Not surprisingly, Rooney’s impact upon his return from a head wound was hailed by Moyes post-match:

“You’ll talk about his goals but his pass for Antonio’s goal as well and he could’ve made it 2-0 after rounding the goalkeeper and they come up the pitch and make it 1-1. I thought he played really well. I think he looks like he is moving as well as he has done. He is in a good place himself at the moment and obviously any centre-forward who is scoring goals feels good about himself. wanted to get him back in a really good condition and mentally ready correct when he was ready to play.”

Moyes also discussed the display of Antonio Valencia on the United right. Much of the pre-game headlines surrounded Shinji Kagawa’s installation on the opposite flank but it was the Ecuadorian who caught the eye with a goal and assist contribution:

“We knew that if we could get Antonio Valencia plenty of the ball then he’d be able to deliver the crosses. He did do and ran the full-back a couple of times in the first half. It was his goal I was pleased with, he’s got a great strike on him with that right-foot and it was great to show that. I’ve said to him that he should score more goals.”

The Scout Says: Rooney’s rampant form continues to stir up the debate concerning coverage of United’s forwards this term. With three goals in two games and confidence flowing, it’s clear that Moyes is doing all he can to ensure his former Everton charge will be every bit as vital to the Red Devils’ cause as Van Persie this time around after the Dutchman left Rooney in the shadows last season. The kind upcoming schedule, allied with the fact that Rooney is far more budget friendly in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) AT 10.5 to 14.0 and has an ownership of just 2% makes him a tempting differential over the next few Gameweeks. In midfield, Valencia’s contribution is also worth monitoring. The winger has started four of United’s five games now this term and certainly seems to have his manager’s faith – priced kindly across the Fantasy games (7.5 in FPL) he could well prove a decent purchase if he continues to keep Nani on the bench.

Kompany Back for City

City also registered a comfortable win ahead of the weekend Manchester derby. While Sergio Aguero hogged the headlines with a goal and assist in the 3-0 win triumph at Viktoria Plzen, Manuel Pellegrini’s side were, significantly, boosted by the return of Vincent Kompany – the City skipper recovered from the groin injury that forced him off in Gameweek 1 and looks fully fit once again, according

“It was good to have Vincent Kompany back because he worked very hard this last few days and I had some doubts during the last ten minutes. I thought about taking him off to rest his legs, but I saw he was playing without a problem, so he will be fine for Sunday.”

The Scout Says: The Belgian’s comeback is undoubtedly a huge boost as City prepare for the visit of United next Sunday. While Pellegrini’s side have registered three clean sheets in four domestically, the three goals conceded in their Gameweek 2 defeat at Cardiff highlighted their captain’s loss – he is now down to 6.3 in FPL after significant sales. While Saturday’s lineup at Stoke highlighted the rotation we can expect under the Chilean, it was perhaps telling that he named Matija Nastasic alongside his skipper for his first Champions League match in charge; a sign that the youngster remains ahead of the likes of Joleon Lescott in the central defensive pecking order. Pellegrini’s decision to start with Aguero and Edin Dzeko for last night’s tie could also be significant. The City teamsheet for Sunday’s Manchester derby will be of huge interest as Fantasy managers attempt to decipher the pecking order in attack. While Aguero would seem a certain starter, it remains to be seen if Dzeko’s cooly taken opener will be enough to see him retain his start ahead of Alvaro Negredo against United.

Gibson Nears Toffees Return

Roberto Martinez rolled out an early injury update yesterday afternoon. The Toffees boss expects Arouna Kone to be available for the trip to West Ham, though Antolin Alcaraz is “still recovering” from a groin operation over the summer. Elsewhere, Martinez admitted Darron Gibson is edging towards a first-team comeback, while Steven Pienaar is likely to make a quick comeback from the injury that forced him out of the weekend win over Chelsea:

“We need Darron fit. Darron is a special player and he brings something different to the side. He is progressing really well. I would say that from a medical point of view, he is very close to being fit. Now it’s the match fitness he needs to get. That could take a bit of time and we need to adapt to how the knee reacts to work. But we are really happy to see him ready and really close to being able to be involved and be in the squad…With Stevie (Pienaar), we need to assess him week to week. When you get the sort of soft tissue injury he has, you never really know. I do feel that Stevie will react well to treatment. He is a very fit boy and I do feel that he will probably be back quicker than anyone expects.”

The Scout Says: While Steven Naismith (a 4.8 FPL forward) should get another chance to impress on the right of the front three, Martinez’ praise of Gibson will be a little worrying for Ross Barkley owners. As of yet, it’s not yet certain just where Barkley stands in the central midfield pecking order – but judging by his manager’s words, Gibson could well be handed a starting berth when fit again. With Gareth Barry looking nailed-on, Barkley may face real competition to hold onto the advanced central position, with big-money signing James McCarthy and Leon Osman also in the mix, Barkley’s security of starts still remain in question in spite of a string of impressive displays.

Giroud Back In Training

Olivier Giroud looks to have recovered from the knee problem that forced him off at Sunderland last Saturday. The Frenchman has been named in the Arsenal squad for this evening’s showdown with Marseille and was pictured in training in a series of stills published on the Gunners’ website – a huge boost for Arsene Wenger ahead of a kind domestic schedule.

The in-form forward spoke to the press yesterday and offered an explanation for his recent goalscoring exploits:

“I’m really happy with our start to the season and mine in particular. I had a full pre-season, which wasn’t the case last season when I had more pressure as well. I’m in form and I haven’t missed any training sessions, so touch wood that it continues. I eased into the season with some goals in pre-season and it has carried on. It goes hand in hand with the team’s form at the moment.”

The Scout Says: Giroud’s recovery will be a welcome relief for the huge numbers of Fantasy managers who have drafted him in over the last few weeks. With goals in each of his first four league matches, he’s already risen 0.5 in price in FPL and with Mesut Ozil on board to tee up the chances, his appeal looks even greater ahead of a run of games which pits him against just two of last term’s top six in the next 11 Gameweeks. Having also picked up an assist and nine bonus points, Giroud leads the way in FPL with 36 points to his name – seven more than Daniel Sturridge, despite the latter also notching in each of his four appearances; a clear indication of the Frenchman’s form as the bandwagon keeps on rolling.

Ruiz Out with Ankle Problem

Fulham have revealed Bryan Ruiz is set to be sidelined with the ankle strain that forced him off during the weekend draw with West Brom. The club rolled out an injury update yesterday and confirmed:

“He underwent an MRI scan on Monday which confirmed that it is an isolated ligament strain, with no clear fracture. The early signs suggest that the injury is better than first feared, although a recovery time cannot be estimated until the swelling has reduced.”

The Scout Says: Having played the last couple of games on the Cottagers’ right, Ruiz’ absence is likely to be good news for Damien Duff’s chances of a return for this weekend’s derby trip to Chelsea. With Darren Bent still struggling to overcome a hamstring injury, Jol’s options up top are somewhat limited right now and should allow Dimitar Berbatov to lead the line once again, while Pajtim Kasami’s chances of retaining the role in “the hole” behind the Bulgarian are likely to be bolstered should Bent remain on the sidelines along with Ruiz. Kasami is classified as a midfielder in the FPL, having risen to 4.6 following his winning strike in the season opener at Sunderland.

Fonte Hails Lovren Impact

Southampton centre-half Jose Fontereckons the displays of new boy Dejan Lovren have been critical to his side’s upturn in resilience this term. Mauricio Pochettino’s side have conceded two goals so far – compared to 16 at the same point in 2012/13 – and Fonte has no doubt the Croatian’s class has been a major influence at the back.

“He’s a great player first of all, and when you have a great player next to you it’s easier to play. I feel confident with him, we understand each other well. It’s always going to get better, because we’re still getting to know each other, but from the first moment I had a good understanding with him. I know more or less what he’s going to do in each situation, and he knows what I’m going to do, so at the moment we’re in a very good place and I hope this partnership keeps developing and improving.”

Fonte’s wish for further game time alongside Lovren certainly seems to have been granted. Speaking to the press yesterday, Pochettino explained the reasoning behind his decision to omit Maya Yoshida from recent matches, with the Japan star failing to even make the bench in Sunday’s draw against West Ham:

“We have four centre-halves, we have four defenders, it is also clear that Maya was the last one that arrived during the pre-season. He had a really tough pre-season, especially at the beginning. Nonetheless, there is four central defenders and only two can play so I have to make those decisions. At the moment, Lovren and Fonte are playing, so that’s basically it. It doesn’t have to be that there is a problem with Maya, there is no problem with Maya Yoshida.”

The Scout Says: While much of the pre-season expectations surrounded Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw, it’s Fonte who has so far proven to be the Saints’ most impressive Fantasy performer. Playing every minute alongside Lovren, he has not only grabbed a goal but has benefitted considerably from the new Bonus Points System (BPS) and picked up six bonus points so far, receiving the maximum in each of his two home fixtures. Priced at 4.7 in FPL, he looks on course to continue producing – Palace, Swansea, Fulham and Hull all roll up to St Mary’s over the next seven Gameweeks.

Reid Allays Injury Fears

West Ham’s chances of further defensive returns this weekend look set to be boosted after Winston Reid revealed that his withdrawal against Southampton last Sunday was purely down to cramp.

The Scout Says: Concerns were initially raised over the Hammers centre-half’s availability after he failed to finish the St Mary’s match but Reid’s assurances indicate he is set to continue alongside James Collins in the heart of the back-four against Everton. Given that Sam Allardyce’s side have conceded just once this term and the Toffees have registered a single strike in their last three matches, a home clean sheet looks on the cards once again – Reid and co also have a trip to Hull on the horizon before the schedule take a turn for the worse in Gameweek 7.

Okore out for Season

Villa were dealt a real blow in defence after Jores Okore was ruled out for nine months with a knee injury. The centre-half was forced off with against Newcastle at the weekend and subsequent scans have revealed he has sustained anterior cruciate ligament damage.

The Scout Says: Okore seemed to have cemented a place alongside Ron Vlaar at the heart of Paul Lambert’s back-four on recent matches and his absence opens the door for a cut-price contender to take his place. Granted, Villa have been anything but resilient at the back so far and have conceded in every game but Nathan Baker, at just 3.9 in FPL, now looks favourite to nail down a regular role and hand us a handy cut-price defensive option.

were you expecting a hattrick against Cardiff?

He's a "bandwagon" simply because he's 5.0 and has set pieces and pens in his locker. Same as Whittingham. It was a case of either or.

Wisdom out first. He was horrible.

      Wally/Giroud

I got that part. So they are listed in terms of value, Wally and Giroud being the best, Ozil/Caz being the worst. Okay I'm with you. Think I need another coffee.

I agree with the ranking in that case, Wally and Giroud are the standouts, Kosc/Mert should do well with their kind price and fixtures. Ramsey, meeh... Ozil and Caz are too expensive and I don't think they'll have enough goals in them.

It depends on your tactics. If you have spent heavily on defense (Ivan, Vidic, Zaba, Walker, Baines... etc) then you cant fit kosc/mert and could do with mid priced mids of whom there are few genuine contenders.

Eriksen, Michu, Wally, Barfa (Colback/other nailed-on 4.5 mid)

Exactly. I saw Roonpig last night, and the extra cash seems wasted until RVP starts popping in hatricks again. (which he will now!). Benteke, Giroud and Sturridge are just on such good form, but if I get Ozil in I'll cover the assists & goals of Giroud between him & Wally.

how lukaku fares on his everton debut.
how soldado fares with the full compliment of new recruits (lamela)
the final test for rooney. will the stern man city defence put him back in his shell - and how well rvp does in comparison.
how suarez does on his return (the midweek cup game pre-gw6 deadline) and what affect he has on sturridge.

Back on the subject of defenders.

How many people have 7 big attackers?
From what I've seen it's 6 and one 5-6m type.

The top strikers will get like, 18 goals and some assists.
Goals land bonuses, assists seem not to.

The top midfielders might get like 10 of each.
So still some bonuses and solid scoring.

Top defenders will get like, 14 clean sheets. Those get bonuses too. Not to mention they will also score and assist a few. So like maybe 3 goals for CB, 5 assists for a FB.

          A 5-6m midfielder gets like, 7 goals, 7 assists.
The defenders 14 CS to that 3 extra goals tips the balance to 433 for me.

Not 523. You can afford 6 big attackers. Get them. But are Taraabt, Sinclair, Morrison etc worth getting? These are often the players who get subbed early too. That bracket is weak this year. There is no Michu.

433 is the way to go I think. The key being, with w CS, several defenders get bonuses. Everton 1-0 win this week. Last year would have got Naysmith 3, Jelavic 2 a defender1. This year, 3 ddefenders got BAPS.

The key here being, you dont always even need to get the defender correct. 433. The Future.

Yeah I'm starting to swing this way but it feels terribly unnatural. However if we only have 3 starting mids what price range should be our 2 benched mids? there are hardly any good budget options going around do we just waste one of players and get a 4.5 palace mid? Somehow it seems wrong.

I'm going Barklay and Kasami and Chester bench.
Barkley seems decent as a step in for a defender.
Saw Everton this week and he gets forward more than I realised. Kasami also seems a potential bargain.

Is Kasami nailed on though? debatable surely.

I'm a Barkley owner myself and he looks really good but it wouldn't surprise me to see him benched occasionally as well. Obviously this doesn't matter much if they are on your bench anyway but there are limited options in that budget mid priced range. I'd argue there are better budget defenders at the moment that offer more value.

I'm getting 3 big defenders, 3 good mids with two rotating 5.0's and 3 top strikers in the WC.
I'm trying to squeeze in two 4.5 centre backs as my 4th and 5th defender as these should score better long term, than 5.0 mids.

Nope the second is way too sideways a transfer....But look at this, RVP & Brady -> Sturridge & HBA? Now both Sturridge and HBA are good options and could do well, but why did you have RVP in the first place if not for the upcoming fixtures which are really good for United? It's way too kneejerky!

The worst plans are the ones you can't or won't change in light of new information. Not long ago, Rooney did not look like a viable alternative to RVP. Now he does, has the exact same fixtures and 3.5m is a LOT of extra dosh.

I am most likely to go the Rooney route myself....It's one thing, being stubborn about your plans, it's another to be so knee-jerkish....Btw he did not downgrade RVP->Rooney, he got rid of RVP for two other players. And I've seen quite a few people doing that.

Dropping RVP for two players sounds like good business to me. Can he play 4 up front?

Seriously though, I didn't realise that's what you meant. I thought you were comparing bringing Rooney into an RVP-less team with RVP > Rooney. I think either are fine but I agree that dropping RVP for a non-United player looks a bit odd.

i agree it's massive knee-jerking, expecially for one of the hardest, if not the hardest, fixture of the season.
i wouldn't however call a transfer where the prices are 3.5mil different sideways. think it's related to the dangerous mindset of coverage

Completely agree. Rvp owner and it would insane to drop him for Rooney this week. Maybe by week 6/7 but not this week.

Unless it's with 2 FTs and a straight upgrade somewhere else. Hence I'm saving this week and playing Burner ahead of Hernandez (if injured) and do the Rooney switch next week if necessary!

                  No, Liverpool 5th.

Arsenal, despite the Ozil signing are still lacking quality in key areas. The goalie is still an issue as are the CB's and when Wenger drops Flamini, there'll be no holding midfielder in the side and they'll be exploited a la Villa on opening day.

Also no back up for Giroud if he gets injured, which lets face it, is highly probable over the season.

What if it happens in the next few weeks or so? And if he didn't think a striker was needed now, why would he in the summer? Yes, but he was bought from a Serie B side and didn't make it at Inter, not really a top drawer goalie from what I can see.

You can discredit me all you like, as if I care! I just believe that you aren't as good as the other 5 sides.

Getting back in? we could be top 2 this season anything can happen. Pelligrini will be sacked by January, Mourinho doesn't have a striker that works for them and Moyes is way out of his depth.

Anything can happen, that's what I was saying, it could be quite an open season.

Some very bold opinions there by the way. You seem to have written off all the other teams but believe that with the addition of basically just Ozil, that Arsenal will go from sneaking into the CL places last season to breezing in this season. Whereas Tottenham who you only just beat last season have a much better team than then. Confused logic.

I'll stop talking about it and let the football do the talking... all of the top teams have lost, and looked shaky. If it 's not Arsenal I would love Liverpool to win the league.

You are a hardcore Arsenal supporter, but even you must admit that while Ozil is a massive signing, you have still not improved in GK, CDM, CB, and ST departments....You are desperately lacking in these areas, if you guys have no injuries you could be challenging for the title. But there are always gonna be injuries, and that's when you will desperately struggle. That's why some people said you won't make it to top4.

Giroud has improved out strikeforce this season. We have injuries, but still have a good squad. 2 signings in January and we could really go for it. Buying one of the world's best players and finishing last season the way we did, I just can't see why people think we are weaker...

It's crazy to say that you are weaker....You signed a player who immediately becomes one of the best in the Premier League. It's just that a few injuries, and your season could be wrecked. A lot is thus dependent on luck.

                  Thus, Best of luck 🙂

                  Gibbs is only alright.
                  Sncffvddvezny is meh at times.
                  Koscielny has very little intellegence.
                  Mert is slow.
                  Jenkinson is inconsistent.
                  Flamini looks decent
Ramsey has been great, can he keep it up?
Caz is class but definitely overrated in terms of his infuence
                  Ozil world class
                  Walcott a donkey, but effective.
                  Wilshere has stalled immensely
Giroud is really showing class this year
.... and that is basically Arsenals squad..

Wisdom didn't look too hot on Monday. And you'll have to get rid as soon as Johnson is fit or Brendan decides to play Toure at RB. I do think you should go with either Rooney or Rvp. United haven't been firing on all cylinders to justify double united attack.

I agree with this, I mean people are talking about expensive defenders being the way to go but I'd say this makes a case for spending more time and transfers on finding the value defenders... no reason you can't have a decent midfield and still benefit from the bonus-changes in defense. Look at Collins and Lovren so far for instance.

Just read an article on the greatest championship/football manager players who never made it in real life.

My personnel favourite was Kennedy Bakircioglu who by all accounts ended up having not too bad a career. I used to just go onto the sweetish and Danish under 21 squads and sign up all those young hotshots. Kim Kallstrom ( who did have a quite successful career) was another and Martin Jorgsen was also a must have. Tonton Zola Mokuku was one player who's career never got going in ral life but was a legend in the game.

Being Scottish I have to give a notable mention to Mark Kerr and Alex Notman (20 for finishing and determination)

Any other favourites who never quite made it?

I'm not sure if you've ever played champ manager before? It's a simulation manager game. We're talking about the in game players here. Guys who played in real life for clubs like Derby( Thornton Zola) and had potential but never fulfilled said potential yet gained cult status for their perceived ability as youngsters. Guys like Freddy Adu

I understand that people don't like the racism inherent in trying to make it sound "authentic" with Japanglish grammar. But it's ignorant and misjudged rather than malicious (which I think makes a difference) and looking past that, I love the concept of Kagawa as a belligerent sociopath.

Each to their own. Even ignoring the japanglish grammar/racism, it doesn't seem remotely funny/humorous to me which is the intention

Haha I find it quite funny.
Every time he tweets something I imagine Kagawa standing behind Moyes / Fergie saying or thinking the exact thing and it really is quite funny.

73 through balls attempted, 12 completed.

unless they mean including 11-12 and he managed 61 that season (he didn't)

How many people who post a comments here about Miralas and Coutinho watched Everton and Liverpool games???
I see a lot of comments Coutinho is ok, he play good, he will deliver soon....and opposite of that, ditch Miralas, he didnt deliver etc....
I saw both teams in maybe all games so far from GW1-GW4, and I can tell one, from fantasy prospect Coutinho wiil not produce enough to justify his price 9.0 and Miralas looks much better on field from fantasy prospect and i think he will deliver soon, and also he is 1.5 cheaper....
                        Any comments about that.....

I did exactly the same. Plus, crazy as it sounds, in considering captaining mirralas this week (doubt I will though)

Last time against west ham he scored 2, and versus Everton, who the hammers have a terrible record against, they always concede to attacking mids.

Pienaar, mirralas, biyiliadinov (spelt right), etc.

Michu is also streaky so great transfer in.

He does, however, remain in my last chance saloon and if he doesn't produce the goods, he's gone.

Yes, Liverpool looked much worse when Coutinho was out of the game without any link between the defence and the attack, plus with the arrival of Suarez his potential will increase lots.

                          B) Wait until tomorrow night, limted risk that michu gets injured in away game vs Valencia. But this my force me the risk that I cant afford the player….

Would rather a better midfielder than whittingham.
It should be possible considering u don't have RVP.
                            Downgrade your defence a bit.

                            It's alright, yeah.
                            Sure about Shelvey?
Liverpool have pretty good fixtures too, I'd be looking at getting on that

Hang on, when did Shaw get an ankle injury? Is this just FPL scrrewing up or did I miss something.
