Leighton Baines picks up his first attacking returns of the season as Everton remain the last unbeaten side in the English top-flight. Robbie Brady vaults to the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfield standings after steering Hull to victory at Newcastle, while Christian Benteke owners face an anxious wait after he is subbed off during Villa’s win at Norwich:

The Game Changer

Leighton Baines’ pair of free-kicks in Everton’s superb comeback win at West Ham not only highlights the Toffees flourishing form under Roberto Martinez, it takes the left-back to the top of the overall FPL standings this evening.

Prior to this afternoon’s game, Baines – despite failing to score or assist in his first four appearances – had picked up more bonus points than any backline option, with his game looking ideal for the new Bonus Points System scoring matrix. Previously looked upon as a luxury commodity for our defences, Baines is looking cheap at the price of 7.5 right now in FPL and today’s double merely underlines his potential for the season ahead. With Seamus Coleman flourishing as a mid-price option, there’s even a case for acquiring both for our defence, given their level of returns thus far.

With home games against Newcastle and Hull in the next three, the chances of instant returns seem highly possible as Baines looks to maintain the form that has earned him 42 points in the first five Gameweeks of the FPL – if he continues in the same vein, he could well be on course to better his previous best tally of 178 points.

After the game, Baines admitted a comment from a midfield team-mate spurred him on to today’s brace:

“It was a great feeling to get that, especially because of the position of the game. Before the game Leon Osman said he’d taken me out of his fantasy team because I’d not scored enough goals, so I put that right today.”

The Underused

Rated as doubtful heading into today’s trip to Newcastle, Robbie Brady was cast aside by over 23,000 FPL owners as midfields were reassembled in a hectic week of trading. The Hull man recovered to play a starring role in a somewhat unexpected win at St James’ Park and with a goal and assist to his name, he has also picked up a couple of bonus points. This takes Brady to 29 points – joint-top scoring midfielder in the game heading into tomorrow’s four matches – and, with back-to-back home clashes against West Ham and Villa to follow, heavy investment can be expected in the 5.1 priced player, who currently has just 6% ownership so far.

Goals in back-to-back games had earned Hatem Ben Arfa an astounding 420,000 new owners ahead of this afternoon’s home games with Hull. While the Frenchman failed to replicate his recent form and delivered no more than a blank, it was team-mate and compatriot Loic Remy who supplied the end product for the Magpies in a surprise 3-2 home loss.

Handed his first full 90 minutes by Alan Pardew, Remy ran riot on the left of the front three and notched both the hosts’ goals to suggest he will be equally crucial for the Tyneside team over the season ahead. Coming in at just 7.4, the on-loan forward has an ownership of just 0.7% right now but with Ben Arfa listed as a midfielder, Remy is likely to remain off most Fantasy radars, ensuring he continues as a differential option over the coming weeks.

The Selection Poser

Christian Benteke’s early withdrawal during the lunchtime opener at Norwich set the tone for what has been a miserable Saturday for most. The Villa frontman arrived at Carrow Road with four goals in as many matches but limped out of the proceedings with a hip injury before the half-hour mark.

Currently sitting with a 35.5% ownership in the FPL game, a potential period of absence for Benteke will have a significant effect in a market that has already proven particularly volatile this term. After the game, Paul Lambert was still uncertain as to whether his star striker will face time on the sidelines, with Benteke set to be assessed in the next couple of days:

“Christian slipped and the medical team are telling me it’s his hip flexor. Hopefully it’s not too bad. I think he’s not too bad. We’ll see how he is, but I’m delighted for Libor to score his first goal. That’s why we bought him, in case Christian got an injury.”

With the likes of United, Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool and Swansea all facing favourable fixtures over the next few matches, Benteke owners may already be considering an exit strategy. Villa square up to City, Chelsea and Everton in the next four and with Wayne Rooney offering a real in-form option to Robin Van Persie for United and Luis Suarez now free from suspension and available for next week’s trip to Sunderland, there’s a couple of real differentials on offer for those considering a swap.

On the other end of the budget bracket, James Chester’s owners were dealt a bitter blow earlier this afternoon. The 4.0 priced Hull centre-half has played every minute of the season thus far but has been ruled out for four to six weeks by Steve Bruce, forcing his 3% of FPL to reconsider their cheap defensive options in light of this afternoon’s setback.

Any Liverpool fans on? Can anyone make sense of the defensive pecking order up there at the minute?

Looked so assured with Toure at centre back, the new transfers coupled with full back injuries seem to have thrown things off course.

But still, who looks to be the first choice centre back pairing now? Guessing its Kolo and Sakho fighting for a position next to Agger.

      Not a Pool' fan but...
Wisdom had an absolute mare' against Swansea and didn't justify his selection.
Rodgers has never appeared overly keen on Enrique though it was odd to see him benched for a centre back.
Sakho is a good player from what i've seen of him in Europe but seems he made need time to settle to the English game.
Skrtel is an absolute liability, and has been for the last 2 years or more.

With a back 4 consisting of 4 centre halves it obviously wasn't Rodgers' best decision. I'd expect Toure to shift RB, Enrique to come back in and a back two of Agger / Sakho next time out.

Centre backs - Toure and Sakho were brilliant today. Agger hasn't had a great start to the season and Skrtel looked poor today plus Rodgers doesn't rate him. I'd say it's Toure and Sakho at the moment.

Left back - Jose Enrique had a knock today but came off the bench and was shocking. Cissokho is still injured so there's not much competition from him, Enrique is still first choice but Rodgers doesn't like his brawn over brains playing style.

Right back - Johnson every day of the week but now he's injured, it would be Kelly, but he's coming back from injury. The league cup game against Utd will tell us a lot, if Kelly plays at right back then you can guarantee it will be Kelly until Johnson comes back.

Safest position is keeper and Mignolet has been brilliant so far, put in a fantastic performance today but was let down by the people in front of him. I'd get Mignolet and after him, I'd say that Toure is the safest option.

Great, cheers mate. Wanted to stick with Kolo in my WC team. A lot of people seem to think he's not first choice but I've watched each Liverpool match and can't see why he wouldn't be picked.

Rodgers loves him and he's not put a foot wrong, has been a brilliant free signing, and has arguably been our best defender.

Rodgers loves an old head at the back too, if Carragher became first choice last season despite being 35 and on the wane, you'd expect Toure to be first choice too.

Just thought I would throw in some possible Hot Topic material.

Having benched Brady v Newcastle, and played Wisdom ahead of him v Southampton, I was annoyed at first to see that Wisdom wasn't playing and most probably wouldn't appear at all, until I saw that Brady had scored and got an assist and would come in as an automatic substitution. That's at least an 11 point bonus substitution purely from luck

So I thought I would ask, what is your best automatic substitution ever in FF?

If people were wondering about Benteke's injury, and how long someone is out from a hip flexor injury, here is some information on recuperation time:

Prognosis of a hip flexor strain --

"With appropriate management, patients with a minor hip flexor strain can usually recover in one to three weeks. With larger tears, recovery may take four to eight weeks or longer depending on the severity. Complete ruptures of the hip flexor muscles are rare and are usually managed conservatively. In these cases, recovery may be significantly longer. "

Benteke Owners here's a Quick Note on Hip Flexor Strains:

There are several unknown variables, most notably the precise location and the degree of injury to the tissue, but generally speaking, even a mild hip flexor strain has the potential to affect a runner's power.

The hip flexors are a group of muscles that do exactly as the name implies -- flex the hip by lifting the leg toward the chest -- anchoring at the pelvis (with some attachments running as deep as the vertebrae of the lower back!) and attaching to the thigh or leg.

Their primary function when the leg is moving in space may be to flex the hip, but they also serve to stabilize the pelvis when standing. Think of them as helping to advance the leg of a runner, but also providing stability to help that runner generate power.

When we see a player who is strong enough to "drive with his legs" while dragging a pile of defenders forward, he is often drawing heavily on power from his hip flexors (among multiple other muscle groups).

Any injury to the hip flexors thus has the ability to compromise power. While a mild strain may not be enough to sideline a player, it's possible that it could limit his ability to run effectively.

Not necessarily. You only have to look at the scouts, particularly mark, to see that the start of the season has thrown a lot of people. The casuals will have players such as Brady starting etc with the armband on someone like baines, whilst we take educated guesses on benteke etc.

Well, I'm sure that's part of it but, I would surmise a majority captains, casual or otherwise, will be playing in tomorrow's games.

Further, I don't see how having two of the games most in-form players, in Baines & Brady makes anyone 'less educated' in their guesses...

Not advocating cashing points or selecting players on ownership but, don't deny a players worth simply bc the 'casuals' have them in their side too. 🙂

        yellow - a doubt

red - suspended or injured therefore I think will not affect the price drop/rise.

I am not 100 % can some help please

        thanks

      Apples & Oranges.

I don't think any of us expects Coleman to be a constant offensive threat?

He delivered early but, Baines is by far & away the superior talent here.

PKs, Free Kicks, Corners, Crosses etc...

It just comes down to price... will Baines point total justify being 2.5mil more expensive?

Where will Sturridge play when Suarez gets back?

      Up top.
      Suarez in the hole.
However, during the game, there will be dynamic interchanging of position so you need to consider average position in which case they may be similarly placed, Suarez more towards left than Sturridge though.

Then it seems it might be wise to hold on to Sturridge. Suarez may actually help Sturridge.
