Injuries to some of the Premier League’s biggest stars have dominated discussion amongst the community, with wildcards and hits falling like confetti. We also catch up on those in far better health in our community leagues.

Hottest Topic

Greenwindmill posed a timely question this week. Given injuries to Christian Benteke and Theo Walcott (and with Robin Van Persie still a doubt for the weekend), our moderator contemplated just how we judge whether a hit is worthwhile or not. Among those to answer was Brutus619, who puts forward a good case for hits and an even better case for inclusion in a forthcoming Scoutcast Full Jonty.

Many Fantasy Football managers almost fainted when they saw Robin Van Persie had been handed a 14m price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season. But even though other strikers such as Olivier Giroud have outscored him for a fraction of his price, Jonny believes his price may have been perfect. His reasoning is that despite a volatile market in the last two weeks  in the FPL game, RVP’s ownership has remained relatively steady. Could he remain 14m for the rest of the season? Even though he missed last Sunday’s Manchester derby, RVP has still not dropped in price this week.

For those considering drafting in Romelu Lukaku as a replacement for the likes of Van Persie or Benteke, Blue Lion’s post will prove fruitful reading. With another loan move under his belt the young striker looks prime for points, he argues. This was certainly the case against West Ham.

Wakey’s regular Falling Stars posts offer a welcome antidote to those of us with jerky knees, looking to transfer out poor performers. Each week he profiles a selection of players who have dropped in value to show how sometimes it is worth hanging on to unfashionable players. Stephane Sessegnon, who is 0.3m cheaper than his starting price, is among his pick of the Gameweek 5 Falling Stars.

HeelsOverHead has been delving into the history books to see which of the current crop of Premier League players have the best track record of hattricks and braces. Turns out there are nine current Premier League players who managed a hat-trick last season. Find out who they are here.

The penny has long since dropped that the bonus point system favours defenders. But could this mean we experience the first season where defenders become the highest scorers in FPL? Going into Gameweek 5 Ryan found that nine teams had a defender as their highest scoring player. Will this still be the case at the end of the season?

One of this week’s most popular hot topics, with 30 votes at the time of writing, was Portsmouth Bubblejet’s epic look at the best rotation options over the coming weeks. Certainly plenty to ponder there as we look to prepare our teams for the weeks ahead.

Community Leagues

HeelsOverHeads’ Worst To First – 2 Million+ Club, for teams with an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five Gameweeks, now has five out of the 23 teams that entered in the top 1,000,000. Bales of Fury continues to lead the league with an overall rank of 344,013.

In Thomas and Peppie&Felix‘s Friends Life competition the three league leaders are Forca, Daniel and Thomass.

Meanwhile, the five league leaders in In Tommy We Trust’s All Things…. leagues are TheRealAVB, Tommy Tour, LawnDart, Mind over Mata and Binij.

LawnDart topped Torres Magic’s Early Bird league with a score of 64. Just 14 survivors remain, but entry is still open for more to join. In his Last Man Standing league 847 are left.

Those successfully traversing the It’s A Long And Winding Road (LAWR) H2H leagues are TommyTour59, Turbo Dog, IAmSuarez, Beric, Super Hans, ManAmongst and DonTheSpecialOne. TommyTour59 is also the LAWR main league leader.

Elsewhere, the 552-strong UEFA FFS FA Cup kicks off this week with its preliminary round. Team allocations and the Preliminary Round Draw will be posted on the FFS Uefa website by Friday, Sept 27.

    Morning I have recently joined after long time reading. What do you guys think about playing 5. So two options:

    A) boruc given
    Ivanovic Coleman zabaleta rosenior vertonghen
    Ozil Adam Lucas ward-prowse eriksen
    Sturridge Suarez Rooney

    B) boruc given
    Ivanovic Coleman zabaleta Williams vertonghen
    Ozil Ireland Lucas ward-prowse eriksen
    Sturridge Suarez Rooney

    A would be 433 and b would be 523. Which would be best moving forward.

      Not sure about Rosenior AND Gabbidon. But if you're playing 3-4-3 each week then it could be OK. All 3 should be nailed.

      Wilson > Collins. Ham's fixtures are poo

        Can't fault that mid or attack. Are you going to rotate Barkley and Moses because if not I would downgrade one of them and get a better defender in.

        And if you are, 6.3 or 5.1 is quite a lot to have on the bench every other week.

      Do you have 4.0 GK in mind? I'm thinking about the same solution to my weak def too. I like your front but is Lukaku nail on ? Also I would prefer a stronger midfield than this current Mids.

        I think Lukaku will become nailed on yes, he's a beast!

        my current 4.0m GK is Henderson, have no intention of ever playing him, just don't want a keeper who'll drop in value!

    How about it?

    Mignolet // Lewis

    Vidic // Coleman // Dawson // Turner // Rosenoir

    Özil // Michu // Eriksen // Barkley // Brady

    Rooney // Sturridge // Giroud

    My only reservation is that I would much rather have Sturridge than Suarez, but can't make it work without compromises elsewhere that are disproportionately damaging.

    Going back to yesterday's hot topic.

    What is with everyone taking so many hits. people doing -20?

    surely hits should only be taken on DGWs or injury emergencies? I have taken tons of hits in previous years, and they so rarely worked out in the short term. The idea that your team "feels" stronger is often just in response to previous points scored by the person your transferring in, or that you feel more comfortable with the fixtures. Effectively you're giving yourself a handicap before the week has even started

    Obvs this week is exceptional with theo/rvp/tekkers, but in general, I'm going to try and be a hit miser this year

        Not really.

        It just so happens that the injured players are the big names that everyone thinks are essential.

        The norm is that, if you have an injured player, you replace him with someone else.

        This week, for example, people are shipping Walcott and wanting Özil which means 2 or more trades to free up cash. Once that's done, they have some pennies overs and they think "Well, if I've taken a -8, I might as well take a -12 or -16 and take all in one go".

            If people feel that it can be justified, yes.

            I've seen a number of people listing their so-called injuries/bad luck and following up with question about a -12 hit.

            One injured player out. One playing player in.

            It really is that simple.

          I am definitely in the throes of an injury emergency. I'm trying to steer away from the "in for a penny, in for a pound" mentality though and stick to a -8.

            So that's 3 transfers?

            You have 3 injured players who are 100% out of the GW and your bench players are all non-playing?

            You can't field a starting XI?

              Sometimes its better to have a strong player start than ordinary bench players who might have a bad fixture.

                Then you've picked the wrong bench players.

                And there are no guarantees that your strong player will have a strong game.

                  I may have a bad bench as a result of bad fixtures and inconvenient injuries. I wouldn't have had any intension of playing them but the injuries meant I would have had to so I see no fault there. It might be better to start Rooney, Ramsey and Baines -8 than Barkley, and two defenders with hard fixtures

                  I don't think that's fair... You need bench players who can cover for the odd injury, but no bench can make up for 32m+ worth of injuries, which is what some of us are looking at this week.

                  With no hit I could put out 10 this week, but that would be include 1 striker and Dikgacoi in midfield! I dont mind playing KD every now and then, but I need SOME hope of points from elsewhere!

                  4 points gives me 11 this week, but due to other constraints (money, number of players from certain teams) I would have to compromise on who I bring in. Sometimes spending points is the right thing to do, and I say that as someone who didn't do it once until about GW30 last year.

              Benteke, Walcott and Chester out, RvP probably out, Wisdom not likely to play.

      I would agree for the most part but I have taken 3 hits over the last 2 GWs and they have brought me more points even when accounting for the hits.

      GW4:

      Dzeko > Sturridge - 0 > 7
      Soldado > RVP - 2 > 6
      Coutinho > Ward-Prowse - 0 > 1

      12 difference = +4

      GW5:

      Silva > Ozil - 0 > 14
      RVP > Rooney - 0 > 5

      19 difference = +15

    Which is best people?

    A) Chester -> Baines
    B) Walcott -> Michu
    C) Soldado -> RVP/Rooney

    Chester being out for 8 weeks and Baines having decent fixtures and form is tempting.

    Michu has 2 tricky fixtures up next, and whilst I think he's a great buy from GW8 onwards, I don't expect him to score that heavily over the next 2. I'd also want Wally back in 2-3 weeks.

    United attack looks the best captaincy option this week, but Soldado has decent fixtures and with Chester, Wally & Ward all out I could do with a playing sub this week!

    Terry, Zaba, Toure

    a) Walcott to Lallana
    b) Walcott to Arnautovic
    c) Soldado to Lambert
    d) something else,
    have 0.3 in the bank
    If I do a or b i'll do Suarez for Soldado or Giroud next week but if I do c then i'd do Walcott for Ozil next week

    Sorry for not having the nouse to make this question any shorter: I wanna get Michu and Lukaku in over the next GW or two

    Sturridge > Lukaku
    Lingaard > Michu

    However, I need to do both to afford the move(s) - i.e. can't get Michue without losing Sturridge

    So, to get to the flipping point: Sturridge has Palace (H) so it's surely insane to take him out for that game

    So how the flipping flip am i supposed to get Michu into this lot? (And I've already taken a -4 this week, bringing in Rooney & Suarez for RVP and Tekkers)

    Mig / Harper
    Rio / Dawson / Coleman / Kos / Chester

      Well

      Mignolet: Liverpool conceded the 4th least in the league so far with 4. Best keeper to have imo.

      Dawson: Conceded the least with only 1 so far. Good pick.

      Coleman: Conceded joint 2nd least with 2. Good attacking prospects.

      Clyne: Conceded joint 2nd least with 2. Defense has improved a lot this year with the addition on Lovren who is class imo. Good attacking prospects again.

      As long as these 4 stay fit its a good shout. Only thing is if their defenses will stay as tight for the rest of the season.

          Same. 3rd highest points predicted in the RMT thingy, so it doesn't feel right to get rid.

          I'm thinking Chester -> Baines(c) at the moment. I want Michu, but I also want Wally as soon as he's back, so may look to do something like:

          GW6: Chester -> Baines
          GW7: Save
          GW8: Toure & Nolan -> Wilson & Michu

            Solid. Similar to my plans.

            Upgrade Chester this week, then look at Nolan next week or the week after, although in my case it will mean bringing Wally in as I have Michu

      C (if you have RVP), then A (if you have Walcott), then B (if you defence is shite) imo.

      My team was in a mess, Jinswick, and i really want all of them, so i WCed.

      Problem you have is all will rise in price, Rooney certainly offers more potential. The reality regards the other 2 though is fixtures ain't relevant, they can produce returns from any game.

      It comes down to priority IMO.

      Who are you selling them for? Selling Soldado is not a priority but if you are struggling to pick a decent defence/midfeild, then I'd do Baines or Michu

        Transfer would be:

        Chester -> Baines
        Wally -> Michu
        Soldado -> Rooney

        All my mini league rivals will have Rooney/RVP(c) so am a little uneasy with having no MUN cover....

    Have Lukaku and Giroud.
    Whom to bring in for Sturridge?
    Rooney, Suarez or no need to change Sturridge.(From the next 5-6 GWs in mind).

    Thanks in advance.

        I have a feeling for Soldado but that's risky, I'd go Rooney. I think most people here would tell you to stick but having seen Studge's performance last night it just looks like he's still struggling with something and he's injury prone so the warning signs are there. So my vote is get Rooney.
        Btw I want to get Lukaku in this week but i'm really unsure as to whether he'll start on Monday, what do you reckon?

          Well i would say chances of him starting this GW is slim but chances if him sciring after coming in as a dub is pretty high. He has already proved it last season and the last game.
          But im sure from next week on he will start a lot of matches.
