PlayON Player Picks – Gameweek 6

Headliners Wayne Rooney and Boaz Myhill produced the goods last week, while Yohan Cabaye also chipped in before succumbing to a groin problem at home to Hull. We cast an eye over this week’s PlayON price list and get scouting in search of bargains once again.

Gameweek 6 Picks

Goalkeeper – David Marshall
This week there are four regular keepers all under the 8.0m bracket but the Cardiff stopper looks the most enticing option. Marshall’s heroics against Tottenham last Sunday earned him 1,400 points on PlayON and a trip to Craven Cottage on Saturday to face a Fulham side with one goal in their last three league appearances make the Bluebirds stopper strong value at 7.8m. The other three budget keepers for your perusal are Kieran Westwood (7.0m), Brad Guzan (7.5m) and Boaz Myhill (7.7m) but with games against Liverpool, City and United respectively, their prospects look a little bleaker.

Defender – Vincent Kompany
Having only just returned from injury, the City skipper is available for a bargain 9.2m this week. Kompany rolls up to Villa Park on Saturday and with the midlands outfit devoid of talisman Christian Benteke, the visitors’ chances of a clean sheet seems far more likely – bearing in mind Pablo Zabaleta will set you back 11.4m, Kompany looks a relatively cut-price route into Manuel Pellegrini’s backline. Scouring the budget bracket, there are plenty of options for those willing to take a gamble with one or two of their picks – United’s Rafael is back from injury and is priced at 7.3m ahead of a home clash with West Brom, West Ham summer signing Razvan Rat (8.0m) seems to have finally established himself as first-choice left-back and heads to Hull this weekend, while Fulham’s Fernando Amorebieta (8.1m) made his first start last time out and will be confident of returns at home to a Cardiff side with one goal in the last three Gameweeks.

Midfielder – Mikel Arteta
Similar to Kompany, the Arsenal midfielder’s recent return from injury ensures his price remains in the budget bracket. Arteta is available for a mere 6.2m this weekend and with Arsene Wenger sweating over the fitness of Aaron Ramsey and Mathieu Flamini, the Spaniard looks set for his first league start of the season and has penalty duties to also boost his points potential. With doubts hanging over Leon Osman, Darron Gibson is likely to return to the Everton starting line-up and at 5.9m, the Toffees midfielder looks a steal. Hull’s Stephen Quinn comes in at just 6.9m for the home game against West Ham – he has recently returned to the Tigers first-team as a result of Robert Koren’s injury, while the playmaking talents of Robert Snodgrass (7.6m) could be the difference for Norwich as they head to the Britannia.

Forward – Luis Suarez
Set to play his first league game since a 10-match suspension, the Liverpool forward is the cheapest frontline option in this week’s PlayON price list and heads to basement-dwellers Sunderland this weekend. Coming in at just 7.0m (compared to Daniel Sturridge’s 11.7m) Suarez looks set to torment the managerless Black Cats and will be handed plenty of opportunity to hog the headlines as the Merseysiders look to bounce back from last week’s shock home loss to Southampton. Romelu Lukaku remains kind on the budget at 9.3m and looks poised for his first league start after emerging from the bench to grab the winner at West Ham. Further up the price scale, Wayne Rooney is the luxury option at 11.6m – regardless of Robin Van Persie’s availability for Man United’s home game with West Brom, the former Everton man has done enough to justify our faith and has scored in back-to-back league matches.

How To Play

PlayON is weekly Fantasy football so you can dip in and out of playing throughout the season. Once your starting XI is built (you can keep changing your team right up to 2 hours before the first kick-off – 10.45 on Sat morning), you can compete for cash. Entering a multiplayer game for a set stake, you’ll have a chance of winning your share of the pot should you finish high enough in the rankings.

Similarly, you can challenge other players to one-on-one games, selecting the amount at stake. The likes of Robbie Fowler, Les Ferdinand and OptaJoe are all playing the game and are there to be challenged for free or for £1. The Fantasy Football Scout team is also available to be challenged and has a 64% win rate so far!

Facebook and Twitter £50 Competitions

In addition to guaranteeing a £500 pot this week, PlayON is also running a competition on its Facebook and Twitter pages to celebrate the return of Luis Suarez to league action. The two people that come up with the best captions for the Suarez picture on their Facebook and Twitter pages will each earn £50 of Free Credit – more Facebook and Twitter competitions on the way from PlayON over the course of the season too.

        We sometimes run free entry multiplayer games with cash prizes but there aren't any running this week so in order to win cash this week, you need to enter for cash. You can play the Ambassadors for free and win bragging rights over them and we have a Free Entry multiplayer game for bragging rights too

      Hi Killian,

      Just really a comment as opposed to a question. I am very surprised about the reaction of many on here on the change of deadline. For me it was a bit false to have a deadline so close to the first match and having a team full of Man U players for instance made a mockery of the game. Of course, I had about 6 or 7 players, but you have to play to the rules at the time. Surely one of the skills of this game is in the punt taking of those cheap players that may/may not start. Us more informed should have an advantage here.

      Are there any plans to limit the numbers of players from each team?

      So a thumbs up from me, and an excellent alternative to the normal FPL game. I am hooked.

        Hi Philman,
        Thanks for that.
        You are right in that the earlier deadline should play into the hands of the more skilled fantasy football manager rather than someone with little knowledge loading up on the full Man Utd team just before kick-off.
        Our goal with PlayON was to remove all constraints - we feel strongly that season-long games unfairly constrain people because they force you to play each week and if you miss a week because you are on holidays etc, your season can be ruined - so we made PlayON weekly so you can dip in and out of playing as it suits you. We don't have any plans for limiting the number of players from each team as we also feel this is an un-necessary constraint - the only constraint we have is 11 players for 100m. After that, it's up to you who you pick.
        We are shortly going to be launching the ability to pick multiple teams each week (up to 5 teams per person), which should make the game more exciting and should remove some of the concern about your gameweek being ruined if one of your players doesn't start.

          Multiple teams - more money!! Not sure if that is a good or bad thing :o. I guess each team can enter as many head-to-heads and multi-player games as you want? Can a multiple team just have one player different for instance?

            You will be able to enter each of your teams into a one-on-one or multiplayer game once - so you can enter your 5 different teams into the same multiplayer game or you could take on Robbie Fowler 5 times with your 5 different teams. Your 5 different teams can be as similar or different as you like.
            Our Ambassadors will only have one team each week.

      Have you guys going to be changing anything after stopping the late chance to transfer players out?

      You talked about maybe having a sub bench which i would like to see tbh, any news on that?

      Also why are the players prices so dam high? I struggle to find a half decent team that start games and then when players i picked because im short of cash don't start i get annoyed and just wonder what the point of playing is,

        Hi Silkyskills,
        We moved the deadline back from 10 minutes before kick-off to 2 hours before first kick-off so that some people who are online right before the first kick-off don't get an unfair advantage by seeing the first teamsheets. We have people playing the game from 70 different countries across the world so we cannot have some people seeing the first teamsheets while others are asleep.
        We are still considering adding a subs bench but we are also mindful of keeping the game as simple as possible - 11 players for 100m is easy for everyone to get.
        Lastly on the player prices, the PlayON pricing algorithm reprices players each week based on a number of different criteria. Part of the game is identifying the bargains each week and avoiding those that you think aren't worth the cost. The list of players and their prices is also the same for everyone on the site so if you feel certain players are not worth the expense, it is probably best to avoid selecting them in your team. One point worth noting is that we have made the game so that it is not just goal scorers that score highly, like most other fantasy games.
        Players in all positions have the potential to score highly so picking a player who is likely to keep a clean sheet is as important and is as worth paying up for as Wayne Rooney.

          If you add a subs bench then i will keep playing. Not having a full team fielded ruins everything about the game for me. I wouldn't mind so much if it was a free game.

            Hi Silkyskills,
            I personally fully appreciate how frustrating it can be when one of your players doesn't start but that's part of the game at the moment and lots of people have won money with only 10 players scoring points.
            Before launching PlayON we did a lot of research on different areas and on the topic of subs, we found that people tend to just load up on the starting 11 players they feel are going to score the most points and only put filler players on the bench so we decided it somewhat defeated the purpose of having a bench.
            However it is something we are still discussing and we do appreciate the feedback.

                  Is there anyway you could make different teams for different games? you have to put a tenner in the pot when you add cash minimum and everyone just plays the same team across all of the games, if you lose one game then you probably lose them all apart from head to head.

        Silky, obviously I am not answering on behalf of PlayON, but for me all the points you make above are what makes the game so interesting, i.e. not having a subs bench, picking the bargain players to release funds for getting big hitters in and taking risks on players that might not play.

        For me, improvements are not needed in the game play itself, but more the web site in terms of information on each player, such as filtering and history options etc, like you can view in FPL. I do believe the basic info available for just the previous week could be improved on, but I know PlayON have this in hand.

If you click the "more info" icon on any player, you will see a comprehensive set of stats for each player's recent form, season long stats, recent results and upcoming fixtures, as well as a tool to compare players on lots of different metrics.
          If you have any other suggestions for improvement just let us know and we'll get working on a solution.

    On a wildcard this week,
    stuck on 2 issues. suggestions needed.

    1. Is Dawson nailed on for Tottenham
    2. Out of Mertesacker, Koscielny and Nastasic, who should I take. tempted towards nastasic coz of villa without benteke and some good fixtures. but ozil's set pieces could give potential points to mertesacker/kosc
    additional info- Have Ozil as Arsenal cover and Aguero as city cover,
