Vigilant Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will be more than aware that bonus points are now being awarded differently. For the third successive season, a new system was introduced which, to some extent, moved the goal posts when it comes to which players benefit from the post-match supplementary points.

It’s already evident that the new Bonus Points System (BPS) has had an impact on where and how the points are shared out compared to last term’s EA Sports PPI (and the “man in a stand” votes from the sesaons before). On examination of the points earned so far, we’ve been able to pick up on one or two key trends here and there but, despite transparency from the FPL as to how it is calculated, the science of just how they arrive at the final BPS number has largely remained a mystery. We hope to address that.

Over the last six weeks I have been tirelessly poring through all of the raw data provided to us by Opta in the Fantasy Football Scout Members Area to find out exactly how players are boosting their BPS tallies beyond the bread and butter rewards for the likes of providing an assist, returning a clean sheet or scoring a goal.

In the first of three articles on this theme, we’ll begin by examining what is arguably the most profitable and purest means for players to bump their BPS – a strong pass completion ratio.

It's probably because he's not on page one of total points....so for a lot of FFL players he doesn't exist

I know they have looked less than fluid in attack of late, but are we writing off United's frontmen a little too soon?

I'm genuinely close to getting Rooney in for RvP ... but even selling RvP for anyone seems like it could bite back - hard!

My other option is to go with Suarez, Lukaku and Benteke long term, and then I can probably afford to get Theo or another premium mid in soon as well.

i'm not writing them off, but Roo blanking is easier to swallow than RVP blanking. I sold RVP for Roo a few weeks ago after lots of concern about RVP exploding, but at the mo he doesn't seem the player he was last year. The risk is to hold on to a player based on pervious seasons performances and get burnt by it.

We have been here before, RvP going on a barren run and then getting amongst the goals.

I might have to let go and hope that his replacement does just as good, and for less cash.

Suarez will carry on where he left off last season, Benteke, LUkaku, Walcott the same.Rvp would have to score two a game to justify his price tag over that lot...can he do that?

I actually can't comprehend what happened in these first seven gameweeks.

The midfield in particular is the same kind of confusing illogical mess as my first night out as a fresher.

So after taking four days off to clear my head (student hangover)... er... where do we start... has my punt on Siggy been killed by Big Sam? Does Moses have to go?

See that isn't right. I know people who came to the country when they were in their nappies. What's more relevant, the country they were born in or the country they grew up in?

For instance I've seen reports about Justin Rose not being English. He came here when he was 5 for goodness sake. Means that he picked up his first golf club in England.

I kind of agree, but where is the cut-off point? Not sure if it still happens, but in the 90s Qatar basically 'bought' Kenyan long distance runners (gave them citizenship and a £100k a year sinecure) and won a few Olympic medals.

I assume the question was asked with respect to Januzaj, who could become naturalised and apply for a British passport and be eligible to play for England. Which I completely disagree with.

But in your example, yep, he should be able to represent England. Maybe the cut-off should be school starting age (is that 4 or 5 these days?)

The question is is it a cynical manipulation of rules (quite possibly in the case of Januzaj, though growing up in Kosovo can't have been much fun, so let's reserve judgement) ora genuine case of immigration. Saido berinho for example - I would be proud to see him play for England, with all that that said for our ability to accept other people, if he chose England as his country. If he didn't then I understand that too.

But look at it from the other side, it's not exactly fair on Burundi.

I'd like to clarify that I'm just talking about sports teams and nationality (because of the ability and, as we've seen in rugby and cricket, the regularity, of cynical manipulation of the rules).

Nationality in general, if you have a legal right to be in a country and would like to become a citizen, go for it!

But how do you set up a system where if someone feels English, they can play for them?

There have to be some rules about it, surely, or the system will be abused.

Of course, but the rule can't be so simplistic as where you were born or whether your parents were English. If it is then I don't want any part of that team.

I think you'll see people who just want to play some international football then start 'being' English, like how it happened in cricket. I wasn't the biggest fan of Kevin Pieteren playing for England (he moved when he was 17!), but Diego Costa playing for Spain and Eoin Morgan playing cricket for England are an absolute joke I'm afraid.

    @Torres Magic

I typically rely on Physio Room for my injury updates / expected returns.

PR is usually ahead of the FPL site on updating a players status but, they rarely disagree on a players return date, right?

Example: G. Johnson & T. Walcott are both listed on the FPL to return after the break but, Physio room has them back the following week.

From your experience which source do you typically find more accurate?

FPL does not care much about their return date so I would never trust them completely. Phisyoroom is better but they know as much as we do so they are guessing as well until Wenger says something

      So?

As a Canadian, I've watched the number of our players in the NHL dwindle from 90% down to about 50% in the past 20 yrs.

This doesn't concern me at all. The game has been enriched by different playing & playing styles as well as the added revenue of a larger TV audience.

When a league / business pays the highest wages / incentives then you have to expect that the best talent will come.

In the end, it's simple economics, right?

Hockey isn't really a world sport with prestigious world competitions.

It's not about the enrichment of the league, the discussion is about how it's affecting the development of English players to the detriment English of the national team.

Oh see, now you've done it. Insulting hockey like that?
You might as well have spilt my maple syrup... 😉

First, Hockey has been an Olympic sport since 1920.

Following that, counties such as Australia, Japan & Great Britain have all participated in the games as well.

Moreover, Great Britain won an the gold medal at the 1936 games in Germany.
          (Bet-cha didn't know that, eh?)

Further to that, check out Dave Bidini's book "Tropic of Hockey", wherein he finds pick up games from Saudi Arabia to Transylvania. http://www.mcclelland.com/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9780771014581

Finally, I'm not arguing that football isn't the 'World's Game' but, I feel you've got to expand your sporting horizons my friend.

Heck, next time you're in Toronto I'll treat you to a pint before the game!

It isn't the fault of the PL, it is the complete lack of quality being produced in England. I don't live in England and tbh I don't care what number of English players are involved once they are good enough. What the PL has simply done is forced the FA to admit that Englan is simply not producing many worl class players, or even players that are capable enough to play at the highest level.

66 aside we haven't done much with no foreigners in our league or with loads of them

Don't think it makes much differance , if anything having Agueros , RVPs & Ozils here should help our youngsters ,...surely competing , training learning if the best can only help

Plus 80s football was fire compared to what we have now

Full disclosure of my current squad (£2.6m in the bank):

      Boruc Mignolet
      Shaw Chester Zabaleta Collins Coleman
      Eriksen Barkley Ozil Adnan Oscar
      Lukaku Giroud Suarez

I'm keen on Chico and Wilson at the back (instead of Chester and Collins).
I'm keen on Pablo Hernandez and Walcott in midfield (instead of Barkley and Adnan).
I'm keen on Bony up front (and I'm thinking that getting him in for Suarez can help me fund the improvements I covet above).

Great article -- the explanation even more so than the stats themselves.

It makes me wonder how many more baps are being awarded overall based on the new BPS. Would love it if FPL opened up the vault and gave us access to previous seasons so we could get a sense of trends vs. new realities after the first few months. If points are easier to get than the team budget structure might not make the same sense that it used to.

Would you bring in Morrison for JWP for free to sit him on the bench? Thing is, I could save the transfer as well, but the bench looks horrific with Chester, Collins and JWP. Also, I have 0.2 in the bank, JWP is 4.3 and Morrison's 4.4, might not be able to do it later. Replacing JWP will be problematic in the future. Thoughts?
