The community has spent the two-week international break assessing some long-term transfer decisions and pondering whether there is now an established template team – and, if so, how the devil do we dismantle it? The concept of a “power three” at the back was also discussed, while an array of community tournaments rumbled on.

The Hottest Topics

The Sarjeant has been undertaking some long term planning research and come up with this handy guide to the fixtures and potential form right up until Gameweek 20’s January wildcard. This gives a fascinating look at the forthcoming 13 fixtures and the best teams to load up on. Among the most enticing sides over this period, according to The Sarjeant, are Chelsea and Aston Villa.

It’s a double mention in this week’s round up for The Sarjeant, who has also been looking at factors behind the template team that has been highlighted in our Breaking the Template articles (part one and part two). A key factor in this team, he argues, is a genuine lack of goals and increase in clean sheets compared to last year. His comparison offers a good indication as to why so few attackers are catching our eye.

The 3rdTurd has also been looking closely at our template team analysis and sparked an interesting debate about the make up of the top ten players’ teams.

Last season was all about the “power five” midfield. Could this year see the emergence of the power three defence? I Love Hits certainly thinks so and plenty agree, with the likes of John Terry, Jan Vertonghen and Leighton Baines among those vying for a place in this exclusive defensive line up.

Wakey has been on hand with his latest list of β€˜falling stars’, assessing players whose price has dropped below their initial Fantasy Premier League evaluation. His Gameweek 8 falling star side includes David De Gea, Ashley Williams and Stephane Sessegnon. It also features an astonishingly discounted front line that includes Robin Van Persie and Christian Benteke. Sadly Romelu Lukaku will now have to drop off his list, as the Belgian striker finally clawed his way back to his starting price of 8.0 earlier this week.

With Manchester United and Liverpool opting for a front two formation Kostja wonders whether we are better off investing in teams with a lone striker like Everton or Aston Villa, where their frontmen are unlikely to share points. He points to the difference in shots on target offered by Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez from game to game as an example of the limitations of investing in one of a strike pairing.

D1sable has been left frustrated season after season by Theo Walcott and Leighton Baines. He always seems to miss their points hauls and transfers them in when just as their form dips. He asked the community to list their most frustrating players and Matt Tomatoe, Mayor Quimbandwagon and Get Yout Baps Out! were among those to share his frustration of jumping on the Baines-wagon just as the points dried up.

After his stunning brace in Gameweek 7 there is huge anticipation surrounding David Moyes’ latest young star Adnan Januzaj. Autobot RVP Brigade has used the commotion as a hook to investigate how Moyes’s previous teenage talents, Wayne Rooney and Ross Barkley, have fared in terms of appearances and performance under his tutelage.

Community Tournaments

In Torres Magic’s Early Bird competition just two players remain: Stephen Woods and LawnDart. TM’s Last Man Standing competition has 757 survivors after 44 failed the safety score of 24. Codes for TM’s other 5 leagues can be found here.

Meanwhile the FFS UEFA Beach Soccer Tournament team line ups will be released this week ahead of the competition’s set of friendly fixtures in Gameweek 8. For more details visit their blog here. We have also set up a dedicated article for the community to discuss the tournament here.

    Wow, serious DZ. After my last post at 4:28, I went to drive to pick up my daughter from soccer practice, got back, tucked in my youngest, and came back to see three posts in the intervening 32 minutes.

    I'm still far far from sure what to do but my current thinking is that I should downgrade one of my more expensive defenders to a Swans defender to raise funds to upgrade Lampard to Walcott next week/when fit.

    Is this my best option? It only feels slightly better than wasting a free transfer and doing nothing..

    Walker>Chico

    Migs/Marshall
    Coleman/Vidic/Walker/Mert/Baker
    Michu/Lampard/Erikssen/Barkley/Brady
    Rooney/Sturridge/Giroud

    2 frees and 0.6 in the bank

      Wow you have 2 frees. What's that feeling like?

      I'd prefer to downgrade Mert personally but I guess that doesn't leave u enough cash for Wally.
      Rather than waste a free, Mert>Clyne and bench him this week?

        It's so weird having 2 frees and no real need to use them at all...

        I would also feel happier taking out Mert than Walker and maybe the money difference isn't so important...I'll still have 2 frees next week so perhaps another way to get Wally back will present itself by then. Possibly even Giroud to A Belgian.

        But then Mert has a strong fixture this week so I'm back to thinking doing nothing is the best option!

    Hey guys. This is my team, would love some advice on what to do.

    Migs (4.0)
    Rio Terry Dawson
    Michu Rambo Lamps Whitts
    RVP Lukaku Studge

    Bench: Shaw JWP Chester
    0FT, 1.8m ITB

    A) JWP>Janz (-4) and Lamps > Wally next week
    B) JWP>Barkley(-4) and Lamps>Siggy/Paulinho next week
    C) no hit and Lamps > Wally next week (play Whitts for his tough fixtures)

    Leaning towards A) as it will give me a better team for this week, I can bench Whitts and still afford Wally next week. Not that keen on Siggy or Paulinho.
    No hit seems the sensible option but it seems the year for hits and my team still needs a lot of work before I'm happy with it.

      The Janz wagon is in its infancy, but could have some legs. Utd have poor options on the wings and the lad had an absolute blinder so will play until his form dips I reckon.

        Thing about Januzaj is that his gametime is still far from certain, at least not for the next few games. United wingers may have been poor but I think that's temporary. Also, there is his contract in doubt United may be giving him a run of starts to keep him here until contract issues settle.

        Morrison and Januzaj are good shouts in that range but in terms of gametime, it's not certain yet. I think we'll have more coming up.

        Thanks.

    Which route would you go with this lot?

    (A) GW8: Nolan -> Januzaj
    GW9: Mirallas -> Walcott
    GW10: Januzaj -> Amalfitano/Brady (if it all goes wrong), otherwise Sturridge/Giroud -> Benteke

    (B) GW8: Save
    GW9: Zabaleta & Nolan -> Clyne/Wilson/Vlaar & Walcott
    GW10: Sturridge/Giroud -> Benteke

    Boruc, Davis
    Baines, Terry, Zabaleta, Toure, Ward
    Michu, Ramsey, Mirallas, Nolan, Ravel
    Suarez, Sturridge, Giroud
    Bank 0.4m

      Paul did an article on it last week. Analyzed his performance.
      Don't know what ya wanna know but if you're considering getting him factors worth considering are:
      Great talent and stand out recent performer for struggling utd side.
      Due to this ^ looks good for a fair bit of game time in the short term.
      When starting capable of scores worth much more than 4.8m.
      A kid fresh out of the academy at one of the biggest clubs in the world.
      Due to this ^ Moyes won't want too much pressure on him and will keep expectations low.
      Assuming he doesn't play like he did vs Sunderland every week then expect plenty of bench duty.
      By season's end I predict his FPL history will be one of lots of 1's and 2's with a fair amount of big hauls mixed in

        Thanks. My take on him is almost just the same. With the contracts left yet to settle, I think the runs given to him are mainly due to this reason and also the fact he's young. Should he stay, I expect a more solid gametime for him next year.
