Sunday’s pair of fixtures provided us with a single goal and worries over two of the most popular Fantasy assets in the game after Michu and Romelu Lukaku both failed to finish their respective fixtures. Steven Caulker grabs the winner for Cardiff over former club Swansea, whilst Jan Vertonghen climbs to the top of the defender standings to justify his premium price tag:

Caulker the Bluebirds Hero
The summer signing grabbed the only goal of the game as Malky Mackay’s side prevailed in the South Wales derby. With two goals to his name since arriving from Tottenham, Caulker is now Cardiff’s joint-top scorer and has also accrued nine bonus points after yesterday’s match – more than double the tally of any of his team-mates. Initially priced at 5.0 in FPL, the centre-half has failed to pick up much Fantasy interest – he currently sits in just 2% of teams – but has now reached 48 points for the season; the same number as Everton’s Seamus Coleman, for example, and just one less that former Tottenham team-mate Kyle Walker. Elsewhere in the home defence, Ben Turner earned his highest return of the campaign; with a couple of bonus points accrued, the 4.0 priced defender is now up to 27 points but while he’s proving decent value, trails far behind his fellow Cardiff centre-half.

Michu Worry for Swans
Without a goal in the four league games prior to yesterday’s 1-0 defeat, it’s fair to say the Spaniard has toiled in recent weeks. Many Fantasy managers have chosen to keep faith as a result of Swansea’s fixtures but after limping out of the derby, the exodus is picking up pace – already, significant numbers have parted company since yesterday’s match. After the game, Laudrup cast doubts over his star midfielder’s availability for the weekend home game against Stoke:

“Michu is not 100% right now. He is struggling with some physical problems and on top of that he had to leave the pitch with another twisted ankle so probably he will be out for a couple of games.”

The Swans boss will definitely be without Michael Vorm for the Potters showdown after the Dutchman received his marching orders for denying a goalscoring opportunity – he will sit out a one-match ban and return for the Gameweek 12 trip to Fulham.

Vertonghen Proves his Worth
The Belgian was again fielded at left-back as Michael Dawson and Vlad Chiriches were handed the centre-half roles at Goodison. Everton had scored in each of the previous six but were denied by Andre Villas-Boas’ backline, who have now gone three consecutive games without conceding – indeed, yesterday’s clean sheet was their seventh of the season already. Vertonghen’s propensity to pick up bonus points also came to the fore – his maximum haul means he now has 12 this term, equalling his tally for the whole of the previous campaign. More significantly, yesterday’s nine-point haul took the 7.1 priced Belgian to the top of the defender rankings on 61 points, though with City and United in the next three, many may hold fire in investing for now.

Elsewhere at the back, Villas-Boas defended his decision to keep Hugo Lloris on the pitch after the keeper sustained a head injury in a collision with Romelu Lukaku. The Spurs boss admitted the Frenchman has no recollection of the incident but went on to confirmed Lloris is “well” in his post-match interview.

Toffees Resolute
Leighton Baines and co also picked up the points, with the goalless draw handing Everton their fifth clean sheet of the season. While Vertonghen’s ability to deliver bonus shows no sign of slowing, 7.7 priced Baines has suffered in recent weeks – he has failed to deliver any bonus in each of the last two Gameweeks, despite his side delivering a clean sheet on both occasions. Nonetheless, yesterday’s result saw him make a move up the leaderboard to justify his premium price tag – he’s now sitting third for defenders but, like Tottenham, has some tricky fixtures on the horizon, with Liverpool, United and Arsenal in the next five.

Barkley Warms the Bench
The Toffees midfielder dropped out of the starting line-up for the first time this terms as Leon Osman returned to the XI after producing a goal and assist against Villa last weekend. Clearly, Martinez is keen to protect the youngster and it was noticeable that prior to yesterday’s match his game time had dropped – 79 minutes in Gameweek 8, then just 59 minutes at Villa Park. Despite dropping from 5.7 to 5.6 in FPL last week, Barkley remains the third most popular midfielder in the game, with 35% ownership – yesterday’s sub role, allied with the fact he has now gone four fixtures without a goal or assist, looks set to signal plenty sales.

Lukaku Concern for Martinez
The big Belgian’s 25% FPL owners will be somewhat concerned after he was forced off towards the end following the collision with Lloris. Martinez admitted Lukaku was withdrawn after picking up a thigh problem in the clash – given that he had notched five times in five prior to yesterday’s match and now has a trip to basement-dwellers Palace up next, he looks a real captaincy contender for next weekend. An injury update will be anxiously awaited, with would-be suitors perhaps putting their plans on hold until Martinez gives us further prognosis.

They should still be good for next week. After that, probably best to have just one - or two if you have Boruc and a rotatable second GK.

Rat and Williams are nicely priced alternatives.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

Is it about time we stopped using ‘casual’ as an excuse for our envy at other fantasy managers doing well and stubbornness for not drafting in good players?

Take a popular player with a ‘casuals’ favourite’ tag such as Yaya Toure for example. He’s a constant menace around opposition penalty boxes and is arguably the premier league’s best free kick taker at the moment. He has 11 bonus points has scored five times, rarely gets injured, is nailed on and is the second best midfielder FPL points wise. Furthermore he plays for a team capable of crushing lesser sides. What’s casual about picking him? Sounds like he’s shrewd investment for those wanting to score more points, which after all is the point of the game.

And take Ramsey, the top rated midfielder in terms of total points in the FPL points. He also has the second highest points tally in the game and has six goals, four assists and 12 bonus points to his name. He is a far better player than last season, with his goal scoring accuracy vastly improved and given a new licence to forage forward from his central midfield berth. What is casual about picking him? Once again he sounds like a player every savvy fantasy manager should have. Surely he’ll stop scoring now? Maybe, maybe not…but all the evidence says he will continue for the time being and is a player that those looking at the stats and wanting to score points should be getting.

So are those picking such players really just lucky casuals? Or are they astute and savvy fantasy managers?

A guy in my mini league who has never played the game before, started in GW2 (so missed the DGW), auto-picked his team and has auto-picked his transfers every week since.

Currently in 3rd and on 553 points. Not bad.

Remove a player from your squad and then hit auto-complete - I think the site decides the replacement based on the best form player at an achievable price. I only know this because he told me he did it! I may start using it!! 🙂

I'm sorry, but if being successful in this game means we just have to knee jerk in the highest scorer from the last week then this game has lost it's appeal.

I don't think it will continue, we are starting to see this already, casuals will slip down the tables 🙂

How is getting the highest two mids over a 10 week period a knee jerk?

Getting Sidwell in after he gets his annual goal is a knee jerk, but not someone who scores six goals.

Both currently converting their chances better than Messi in his world record breaking year of goals. While taking loads more shots from outside the box compared to Messi. That is my reason for calling them casuals. But I must say Ramsay is good value even if he will drop off with his scoring. Yaya on the other hand is pure casual luck.

The thing is, Ramsey doesn't have to keep it going. He has raked in the points and have risen by 1.5m .That's all history and I haven't been part of it.

The owners will just sell him when/if his points dry up.

Us non owners need to make up the lost points though, and it ain't easy.

i wouldn't call them casuals but form followers they pick people on form sometimes it doesn't work but majority of the time FPL is about form & fixtures but top teams will win majority of fixtures & if you have their form players you will do well

aka ramsey / yaya - play for top teams & have form this year...........so rest is history as they say

For the 'casual' Yaya Toure is a great pick as he'll play nearly every game and deliver solid points across the season. He isn't a better pick than Ozil, Walcott, Silva, Coutinho, Hazard, Oscar etc.

Ramsey is a great pick full stop, his stats are really impressive and if you were to judge players without their reputation and previous points most would get him. Problem is that many (myself included) have been a bit stubborn and believe him to be a 'casual' pick who is just getting very lucky.

I think you and I had a conversation on FFS how Ramsey is a great option.

He just looks so dangerous making those runs into the box and shooting so often. He won't suddenly dry up.

When I see some evidence that he is less threatening I'll dump Ramsey...but at the moment all the evidence points to more goals and assist. He looks to be a great pick for weeks to come.

Ramsey is an obvious pick for the Casual, but also a near essential selection for the Shrewd Manager. Those who refuse to include him may, in the words of Dean Friedman in his song "Lucky Stars", not be quite as smart as they'd like to think they are.

To call all Ramsey-owners Casuals is merely a case of guilt by association. It is not true that anything the Casual player does must always be wrong and therefore rejected by the Shrewd Manager.

Casual Players may not realise that Ramsey has been far less successful in previous seasons, or that he is considered by some to be a CDM and that CDMs are very rarely successful in FPL. But some who consider themselves to be Shrewd Managers may have been blinded by these considerations, and overlooked that Ramsey has improved tremendously this season, that he is at last fulfilling the early promise from before his serious injury a few years back, that he is enjoying equal success at international level, and that he is far more than just a CDM.

It is ridiculous to label people as Casuals just because they own successful players such as Ramsey and Yaya. Ramsey and Yaya have been consistently successful all season, they aren't just bandwagons based on a single game-week.

From an earlier 'Hot Topic: The Ramsey Scenario" a gentleman & frequent poster "Ryan" presented a compelling case* for not bringing Ramsey into our sides:

        - He's a deep lying mid. These players don't score regularly
        - Doesn't have a history of consistent scoring
        - Is not nailed on to start every week
        - He will be rotated when everyone is fit

*Although "Ryan" pointed out that none of this matters because Ramsey is scoring points.

Now, if all of the aforementioned reasons weren't enough to deter us 'non-owners' from bringing him in, all we need to do is examine his conversion rate...

So, the absolute BEST strikers in the world convert approximately 40% of their SoT.
The majority of their shots, 50-60% are taken from inside the box.

Further, if we look at the likes of Gerrard or Lampard then these numbers fall even more.
As they only convert approximately 30-40% of their SoT into goals due to the fact that more of their shots are SoB.

Currently, Ramsey is converting 60% of his SoT & only taking 25% of his shots in the box.
Moreover, ARS have a very difficult run of upcoming fixtures, coupled with midweek commitments.
As a result, I strongly feel we will see a regression in his offensive output.

Finally, this IS NOT an argument for dropping Ramsey if he's already on you team.
I can't stress that enough... If you have him hold on!

Rather, it is making a case to look elsewhere for offensive production if you don't already own the Welshman...

        tl;dr
        Ramsey's scoring will fall off
If you have him hold on
If you don't, I'd say look elsewhere

I think Ryan presented that Hot Topic with his tongue firmly in his cheek. He was putting forward the sort of arguments that non-Ramsey owners use to justify their stance, but I don't think he actually believed them himself. (Please correct me if I'm wrong about this, Ryan).

Sure, Ramsey's scoring may well fall off somewhat, but he is still likely to remain a bargain.

I did realize that & I in fact, mentioned it in my response:
"Although "Ryan" pointed out that none of this matters because Ramsey is scoring points."

Tongue in cheek or not, it's a compelling case against bringing Ramsey into our sides...

The same reasoning was presented at the start of the year when we were advised to leave Fellaini out of our teams.

            - He's a deep lying mid. These players don't score regularly
            - Doesn't have a history of consistent scoring

Ramsey fits this profile but, happens to be scoring about a third more points than we'd expect him to...

Seriously as a "director of football" (which I think is a load of BS anyways, not needed and often mucks up the manager's plans) you honestly think he'd know what players were Newcastle's.

The free agents are Gouffran and Torres basically. All the major strikers are gone...

Suarez is obviously better than either in isolation, but I'd end up with a sub-par 3rd striker. So confused! Unless I punt on fernando.

Not a clear cut deal, but here you get Suarez who is probably the best striker going forward. If torres gets 10 goals you should be solid, especially considering Soldado is looking shaite

Sorry for repost but feel this is key hot topic for me this morning as strikers are where points at this year!
      ---------------------------
For all those Ageuro doubters if you research last year he broke up with his wife & was missing his kid and had some inuries so never hit proper form.

This year he seems happy and fit, plus Pelle realises him & silva are key to winning title so will play majority of matches unless its League cup/FA cup.

He has 8 goals already and it is between him, suarez & sturidge for the golden boot in EPL.

Previous years it was Rvp Vs Ageuro but this year RvP isn't top dog at Utd and Man U aren't that good in supply so below is my predicition of top 3 scorers:

      1) Ageuro
      2) Suarez
      3) Sturidge
      4) RvP

        Aguero tied with Suarez -28
        RVP -23
        Lukaku and Benteke -21
        Sturridge -20
        Giroud -16

i love rvp think him and aguero best finsihers but just watch the games, rooney seems to be given top dog hat.

Plus its WC year Moyes wants rooney in top shape.

Might be interesting who is on penalities if rooney steals them off rvp this year?!

Last point you saw man city score 7 while man utd rested in second half this is why man city striker will getr more goals.

      Boruc (Davis)
      Terry Reid Clyne Toure (Turner)
      Hazard Mirallas Ramsey (Morrison Brady)
      Aguero Suarez(c) Rooney
      1.6 in the bank..

I'd say hold for next week. You've pretty much got good fixtures across the board - depending on the Michu injury. But Eve are playing Cpl, so I would start Barkley who did very well when he came on at the weekend.

After that, I'd move Migs/Michu/Giroud out. There isn't much wrong with that team. Keep an eye on Benteke. Also, not having Aguero could hurt you.

One of my mates, a true Gunners fan told me after the Sunderland game that this would be Ramsey's season. "He'll score 15-20 goals this season" he said. I laughed. One hit wonder was my thought. "He'll stop scoring eventually. Just wait and see."

He told me to buy him for my fantasy team. "No way. I've got Wally and Gru, need Ozil in".

      Now he's laughing.

What about the fantasy rule #19, "don't transfer out a player who is a captaincy candidate"? I have Sturridge Aguero Lukaku, all of whom have fixtures and forms who are captaincy-candidate-worthy, but I do want Suarez... just not sure this is the right GW to ditch any of the above-mentioned, unless Lukaku is ruled out.

Yeah, exactly. It's a simple rule, "buuuuuut... it's Suarez". This is going to be a problem all week, hopefully something crazy will happen in the midweek games or weekend pressies to make it easier to decide what transfers to do.

Yeah. The problem is that Suarez can blank and Sturridge do well. Sturridge outscored him the first two games (even though his stats are less rampant), no reason it can't happen again.

Suarez is great, but Sturridge is playing the same Fulham defense and has scored in all but one game this season. Ugh... not sure I'm comfortable ditching him.

Lukaku is hoping to be okay in a day or two however I wonder if we will still see him this weekend. Everton have choices up front and Palace is a good an opportunity not to take a risk on a player as you're going to get. I reckon unless he's 100% okay then he won't be risked.

Yes..he was already buckling under rotation pressure at Friday presses...ALL Chelsea players are bad picks right now.

I chose a chelsea player because of their nice upcoming fixtures. I hope it doesn't turn against me! Other options were Cout or Silva I have Aguero already though...)

      Guys,

      Does:

      Vidic ---> Williams
      HBA ---> Gerrard/Coutinho

Look solid for a -4? If so, which Liverpool midfielder?

I don't think a liverpool mid is the way to go with Gerrard deep and Coutinho just back from injury.

          Who else is there though?

I've got Aguero, and see that as enough City for now, so I'm not considering Silva, and I'm also not convinced by the Chelsea mids.

He used his WC in GW6. 5 out of 6 great picks.

Luck in his case, the game certainly isn't.

who should I get in place of Sigurdsson

      B) Lallana

        Got Ramsey already?

Lallana's fixtures turn South quickly after this week, and Townsend is flattering to deceive (I own the bugger!).

Got any cash in the bank?

Jonty posted the Daily Hot Topic. Normally it's a subject that will interest quite a few.
Any comment can become a Hot Topic depending on interest, debate or replies to it. It can also be a sticky which is one step below. Comments get replies regardless of being green or not.

A good intuition plays a great role in this game.

Gameweek 10 is one of the proof of it.

I was supposed to captain Silva rather than Suarez(I did'nt own Aguero) but I did'nt took the gamble and it costed me another big red arrow.

From now on I'll listen and follow to my intuition.

      Selection Dilemma:

Have no money in the bank.

Want to swap Michu for Silva - but need to raise about 600k. so need to do 2 transfers(for a -4)

Major candidates are Vidic or Paulinho.

Thinking of either Rat or Januzaj??? (Mid is Ozil,Ramsey,Paulinho & Ravel)

      Good choice Rat or Januzaj??

      Cheers guys

Your alternative is Michu ---> Gerrard/Coutinho for free.

Cant do Gerrard pal- Michu is now 8.8 - Gerrard is 8.9 - Coutinho not sure about him.

I'm sure Chelsea will start keeping CS's again and he's actually a big goal threat and looks good for bonus on occasion. Strong buy, not essential though.

Not at all, but having a Chelsea defender who is nailed on will be nice for the coming run. We don't know what will happen though, he might get dropped for a game. Was at fault for the second Newcastle goal. If he's expandable in CL no reason he should be untouchable in PL.
