There’s just a few hours left before the deadline is upon us once again. All three of this week’s trio of overlooked alternatives are poised for a strong run of fixtures over the next few Gameweeks – a couple may appeal to those on the lookout for a Michu or David Silva replacement, whilst the third offers a real bargain option at the back…

Philippe Coutinho

A stand-out pre-season for Liverpool had Fantasy managers scrambling to find a place for the Brazilian after he finished the previous campaign in style. Coutinho looked poised to take the Premier League by storm but struggled to meet our expectations and by the time he limped out of the Gameweek 4 draw at Swansea, had failed to produce a single goal or assist from the left of a 4-3-3.

Handed a second-half sub role in last week’s loss at Arsenal, as Brendan Rodgers switched to a 4-4-2 in an attempt to stop the home side gaining an advantage on the flanks, Coutinho looks set to be unleashed from the start against struggling Fulham at Anfield tomorrow. It’s uncertain whether he will retain the left flank berth in a repeat of the formation utilised at the Emirates or whether Rodgers will bring the former Inter man into “the hole” – either way, though, Coutinho’s chances look enticing now that Luis Suarez is working in tandem with Daniel Sturridge in a front two.

Now down to 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League, Coutinho (who will set you back 7.8 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team,) also has a trip to Hull and home games with Norwich and West Ham in the next five – a schedule which could belatedly see his season finally spring to life and justify summer show of faith.

Andre Schurrle

Surprisingly dropped to the bench for last week’s trip to Newcastle, the German’s stock rose without having to set foot on the St James’ Park turf. A hapless display by his team-mates allowed the Magpies to triumph 2-0 and with Jose Mourinho declaring post-match he made “11 mistakes”, it was no surprise to see Schurrle reinstated to the XI for the midweek Champions League clash with Schalke.

While he may not possess Juan Mata’s ability to pirouette or eye for a killer pass, Schurrle’s industry and willingness to track back, allied with a penchant for a long-range effort, makes him an ideal cog in Mourinho’s machine. The complacent nature of the Newcastle defeat may well be a turning point in Chelsea’s season – Mourinho admitted it was the first time his team’s performance has angered him since returning to the Bridge and Schurrle’s dependability could hand him the platform to nail down a regular role under the Special One.

At just 7.3 in FPL (8.0 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team), Schurrle’s schedule over the next six (WBA, whm, SOU, sun, sto, CPL) could well persuade those looking for a route into Mourinho’s attacking options over the next few matches.

Ron Vlaar

Ann unexpected upturn in resilience at Villa Park brings the Dutchman into consideration this week. Typically so porous at the back under Paul Lambert, Villa have ground out three clean sheets in the last six Gameweeks and Vlaar has been the major beneficiary, registering six bonus points across that trio of fixtures.

While the midlands outfit toil up top, Vlaar could be poised for further returns as Lambert’s side prepare for an eye-catching of games that could bring extra investment their way. Tomorrow’s home clash with Cardiff is followed by games against West Brom, Sunderland, Southampton and Fulham and Vlaar, at a mere 4.4 in FPL (5.2 in the Sky Sports game and 2.0 in the Sun Dream Team,) may well be worth considering for those on the lookout for a real off-the-radar option.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

        Hazard missed a training session and was punished for doing so by being dropped for CL.
        He will be back for PL, and a bit hungry to prove that he wants his place I imagine, with plenty of options in midfield for Chelsea available if he feels like getting arsey about it.

        The others I don't know about. Nice Grav btw.

    Just felt like writing about this since I made a casual error which I normally don’t while making my transfers. Just going to talk about the importance of forward planning and taking your team structure in general. By forward planning, I don’t mean deciding what players you are going to get over the next few weeks but talking about flexibility to change your team keeping in mind the financial structure of your team. Where you have spent your funds and where you want to spend more is very important. Talking about balance of your FPL team here. So in my case, this is what the scenario was. I had Vorm, Vidic and Michu I maybe wanted to get rid of. Then I looked at the fixtures and Michu was a player I obviously had to get rid of. But there wasn’t a particular player I fancied and lets be honest, most of the mids right now are wild punts so I didn’t want to commit to a big hitter as yet. I was happy to eat up a 0.1-0.2 loss on him so that I could purchase a big hitting mid after this GW. Now GJ really appealed to me as a differential because Liverpool’s next 6 look really good and in my head I thought I see atleast 3 cleanies and I expect Rodgers to play a 3-5-2 in 3 of those fixtures atleast. Is this the right time to bring him in? Fulham at home? SOLD. I had 1FT and 0.7 in bank. Vidic -> GJ done. Now this gave me a 4-3-3 to play this week since I have a top and defence heavy team with little or no money in mid. This transfer gave me 1M in the bank which is a good amount for a Michu upgrade to a Big hitting mid. The mistake/non-mistake I made here is I had Vorm and a non-playing keeper. For the next 6 I though Migs had more chance of points than Vorm so I made the switch which left me with 0.2M in the bank. Now this much money rules out Haz/Oscar/Silva etc as a one move switch when I decide to upgrade Michu. So the point I am trying to make is do you guys keep this financial team structure in mind while making your moves? I do and I highly recommend it if you guys don’t. We always kind of know where we need to improve our team and how much the players we are monitoring cost so it is always a good bet to maybe not make a glamorous punt move you want to if it harms the future cost structure/balance of your FPL team.

      Also it is very important to identify a pool of players you like with a similar pricing. Makes changes very flexible. So for example, owning a Nasri at 8.0 can be bit of an achilles heel since the transfer to a big hitting Silva/Haz/Oscar/Theo isn't the easiest of moves and you need to plan to keep a million or two in the bank.

        Also having a decent bench of week in week out starters helps for when things do go tits up.

            Oh contrare! LR, I'm always banging on about having a full playing bench.

            Particularly from this time of the season onwards as niggley injuries, bans and European and domestic Cup games come into play.

            Far better to have the annoyance of more points on the bench, than 9 players losing a H2H by 2 points.

      I get what you mean LR. It's like having fir example 1.5 mill in the bank, and owning all of lets say Brayford Chester and Michu. If you use some of that money to get Murner and Vlaar, you'll end up will no money to upgrade Michu to a big hitter unless you disturb the balance of your team by downgrading another big hitter.
      I put this in mind very often.
      Nice post.

      I imagine as a regular here LR, you probably give more thought to this than the average player.

      I try to keep some "Big" funds available to upgrade anywhere across the positions. Initially this was in case RVP took off and I wanted to be able to get him with no more than a single hit.
      Rooney's form has made this unnecessary.

      I find I'm still keeping what is now too much in case I need it. Without actually bringing in Suarez or Aguero because I'm fairly happy with my strikers.

      Am I now over thinking this position, keeping funds which could be better spent now rather than wait for something which may not happen?

        I think you are overthinking because Suarez or Aguero hitting this form are what the funds are there for Flynny.

        Captain material. Goal scoring team. DEFINITE BUY.

      I think I follow what you're saying and I had a similar experience when I started the season with an uber defence which left me no room to manoeuvre without WCing (although upgrading my defence has actually yet to pay off...).

      It's timely advice given that a 'dream' forward line of expensive players is emerging - However, there's also the argument that you should invest where you're going to get the most points and, so far, that is FWD and DEF. Not that spending big necessarily equates to more points but, right now, spending big in MID feels like a waste in the same way that spending big in DEF did historically.

        Totally agree with you there (i have Aguero RVP Suarez and had RVP Suarez Gru before that) and haven't exactly gone big in mid for 5 GW's. Hasn't caused me much of an issue. All i'm saying is that make sure your team is not on the verge of borderline inflexibility.

      Well I voted it up even before I read it, its that good. Anyways I feel ur pain, as I myself hv Vorm & a non- playing GK & Michu. my transfer this gw is to bring in Harper to rotate with Vorm & Michu injury really is a headache as I hv exactly only 11 starters this gw. So am in a conundrum whether to take a hit to take out Michu, in case one of Nastasic, Toure, Haz doesnt play.

      Without sounding sympathetic ( and I've done this ) you've made a Skoolie there LR , I admire your honesty but some glaring mistakes are evident.
      1 - your first priority was Michu ( > Oscar / Hazza / ??) you know you needed more money and you can't leave 8.8 m lying around.
      2 - your next priority was your keeper , did you even need the -4 ?birm is back next week , I went for Boruc/Davies combo because I'm hoping that one would cover the other , was Tremmel ever an option ?
      3 - there was every chance Vidic would play V arsenal I would also question this -4 , ok he's become a pain but I would question a -8 before the int break when an injury or two could force you into hits.

      You had a fantastic rank last year but keep this style of play up and you will be in trouble. We both know this game is like chess , it does involve a little foresight and strategy , look at all the guys caught with the early Michu > Silva transfer , bad luck or bad planning ?
      " fail to prepare , prepare to fail '
      I don't mean to be harsh maybe this is the wake up call you need LR.

        Appreciate your thoughts HVT. Thing is those LIV fixtures looked that good to me over the next 6. I didn't want to do 1 because i still haven't made up my mind on which mid i want. No on is standing out enough. I also though Migs would outscore Vorm over the next few and GJ was someone i have wanted for a while now. Think he is a bargain at 5.7. So i delayed my mid decision, i'm hoping Nasri does well so that i can get a 8.1er in 😉

        Thanks though and no offence taken. I'm actually not having a bad season. Been climbing the rankings all along.

          Good mate , ive GJ / Toure as well as Suarez so great minds think alike tho Toure slightly worries me , I too like the fixtures .
          I've been having a poor season myself so I'm trying to practice what I preach !
          But 5 greens on the bounce now and I'm slowly showing the signs of recovery and I'm still hopeful of a 25 k - ,finish.
          I'm my own worst critic I think we all need a little ' soft ' criticism here and there so c'mon let's climb the ranks !

    A summary of last night's discussions in an attempt to prevent the same questions being asked over and over and over;

    "I want to transfer Silva/Michu out!"
    Coutinho = If you don't have Sturridge and Suarez
    Hazard/Oscar = If you have one don't bring in the other. Opinion is 50/50 over which one to bring in
    Ramsey = Personally feel as though there's no value in this move but it frees up some cash
    *OR* Hold on and wait for Walcott after the Internation break

    Numerical order of how these players should be played;
    1. Barkley
    2. Ravel
    3. JWP
    4.Januzaj
    5. Whitts
    (Brady supposedly out according to the twittersphere)

    Cleans Sheets *should* be coming from;

    Aston Villa - Chelsea - Everton - Liverpool - Man City - Norwich - Southampton

    So play one of those defenders if you have them.

    (Rumour of K.Toure not starting due to bib theory - Nasty requires a late fitness test)

    Captaincy Options in numerical order;

    1. Suarez
    2. Aguero/Lukaku
    3. Sturridge
    4. Hazard/Oscar/Gerrard

    I think that covers most of what was discussed last night. If I've missed anything add it below.

    Most importantly guys, if you have a question ***read the previous page of the thread!*** It's probably been answered a hundred times already

    I was thinking about putting schurrle in before the differential report but couldn't decide over the last two days of who I'd leave out from the following midfield, its not an expensive mid but......Januzaj, Lallana, Townsend and Ramsey. Would you bother with the transfer to remove one?
