Shane Long fires West Brom into a two-goal lead at the Hawthorns but the Baggies are denied a second successive home win in last night’s midlands derby. Karim El Ahmadi and Ashley Westwood grab the second-half goals as the visitors come from behind to take a share of the spoils – for Fantasy managers, though, it proved a frustrating night:

Long Plunders the Points
The Baggies forward fired both his side’s goals and picked up maximum bonus points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game to continue an upturn in form. Prior to Gameweek 11, Long had failed to find the net all season but a strike against Chelsea at the Bridge seems to have reinvigorated the Republic of Ireland star, as he turned in a stunning first-half display against his team’s bitter rivals. Having started the first three league fixtures, Long drifted onto the periphery of Steve Clarke’s first XI – the following six matches harvested just 60 minutes from the bench – but he now seems to have worked his way to the top of the pecking order for the lone forward role. Nicolas Anelka, Victor Anichebe and Matej Vydra now have their work cut out to earn game time in Clarke’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system, with Stephane Sessegnon seemingly nailed on in “the hole” behind Long. The fixtures remain in the Baggies favour, with Newcastle, Norwich, Cardiff and Hull in the next five but with our three forward slots at a premium, Long – despite a favourable 6.0 price tag – looks likely to remain a differential option, with a current ownership of 1%.

Brunt Ticking Over
When it comes to the West Brom midfield, our Fantasy plans have mainly concerned summer signings Sessegnon and Morgan Amalfitano, but the Baggies skipper is gradually making his mark. In a season blighted by niggling hamstring issues, Brunt managed just one start and three brief substitute appearances in the first nine Gameweeks but, similar to Long, has forced his way into the starting line-up over the last three league matches. With an assist in each of his two home appearances over that period, his delivery from the left is looking crucial to Clarke’s side – the Baggies have scored seven times in four games with Brunt in the XI, compared to seven strikes in eight without him. At 5.0, he’s the cheapest of Clarke’s attacking midfielders and looks set to continue on the left for the above-mentioned run of matches.

Villa’s Budget Midfield Possibilities
In recent weeks, Leandro Bacuna has caught the eye with his set-piece execution earning the Villa new boy increased investment. Utilised as a full-back, though, Bacuna’s classification as a midfielder hardly helps his Fantasy appeal, but last night saw a couple of Paul Lambert’s regulars throw their hats into the ring ahead of a kind run of fixtures. Karim El Ahmadi’s strike was his second of the season and, having started seven of the last eight, the 4.4 priced midfielder may appeal to those looking for a budget alternative – Villa now have Sunderland, Fulham, Stoke and Palace in the next six. Ashley Westwood’s leveller hogged the headlines and also has him blinking on Fantasy radars – at 4.9 he’s a little costlier than El Ahmadi, but is another secure starter.

Benteke’s Drought Continues
It’s five games without a goal now for the Villa forward after he drew yet another blank. Partnered by Libor Kozak in a 4-3-1-2 formation, Benteke continues to hint at a return to the form that produced four goals in the first four fixtures – he managed four attempts last night, more than any visiting player, but without success. Despite the slump, a home game against Sunderland this weekend could be just what he needs to resurrect his Fantasy campaign – with Gabby Agbonlahor and Andreas Weimann climbing off the bench to signal their return from injury, a return to a 4-3-3 system against the Black Cats looks on the cards and, with their tails up after last night’s derby comeback, Lambert’s side will be optimistic Benteke can rediscover his eye for goal.

Getting rid of Baines before the price drop. Not sure whether to go straight for GJ or a cheapie like Gabbidon allowing me to upgrade midfield later this GW or next GW?

    Team:

    Mig
    Baines / Terry / Mert / Burner / Baker
    Yaya / Ramsey / RavMo / JWP / Colback
    Rooney / Suarez / Aguero

    1FT. 1.1 Mil

Even getting a 4.0 in for Baines only leaves me 8.9M to replace Colback which is just short of the premiums. I guess I could go with Stevie G?

Is Lampard worth a punt up to Jan WC?

      i'd upgrade your midfield

      Migs
Terry- Mert- Gabbidon/Burner/ Baker ( or maybe 2 depending on fixtures) is pretty solid

Colback to Coutinho/Lampard/Cabaye/Nasri/Sess would be my next move (listed best-worst according to my opinion)

Coutinho has some mouthwatering fixtures ahead, can see him outperforming other liverpool mids aka Gerrard

Lampard revival? who knows but he's on Pens for Chelsea which is pretty big

Cabaye is severely underrated in my book/takes set pieces often, would leave you some good money in the bank for later

Nasri would be first save but I prefer to hedge my bets and not take those three city attackers

Oscar seems to be just out of your price range or else I'd suggest him above all

Was keen on a WBA defender from gw 15 but after the Villa game I think I'll give it a miss. I just saw the 2nd Villa goal & it was due to a poor clearance by one of the West Brom defenders. I don't think they show much cs potential.

this is the team I'm thinking of fielding next week

    Mignolet ( hull A)
    Mertesacker (car A) / Evans ( tot A) / Yanga-Mbiwa (wba H)/ Johnson (hull A)
    Oscar ( sou H) / Cabaye (wba H) / Sessegnon ( new A)
    Giroud (car A) / Aguero (c) (swa H) / Suarez (hull A)

Bench: Davis, Kasami (whu A), De Guzman (mcy A), Clyne (che A)
    Bank: $2.4 with 0 FT

    A. Keep as is
    B. Play a 3-4-3 with Kasami or De Guzman instead of Yanga-Mbiwa
    C. Take a hit, possibly De Guzman > Nasri/Coutinho/Ramsey (maybe you see more pressing needs elsewhere in my team?)

I'm thinking of just waiting to do option C with my FT next week, my only worry is that others on my team should fall to injuries, not allowing me to get in any of those players during a ripe stretch of fixures from GW13 and GW14, possibly making -4 not look like such a bad idea.

    I appreciate any input. Thanks

is Gabbidon the best cheapo defender available for the coming weeks? or is there someone between 4.0 and 4,6 that is a better option. if i go for Gabbidon I'd rather ditch Yanga-Mbiwa than Evans, but knowing Man Us rather unspectacular defending of late, Evans > 4.0-4.6 Defender might actually be better?

thanks for the suggestion, coutinho is going to be great to have over the coming GWs if he can find his scoring touch like last season

I wouldn't do B with Kasami/De Guzman as your bench options. If you take a hit who do you intend to downgrade for the cash? You might want to do that first and save yourself the 4 points.

for ramsey and nasri I wouldn't have to downgrade anyone, only for Coutinho I would probably do Yanga-Mbiwa> Gabbidon (4.0) or Evans > Defender up to 4.6 (having trouble deciding who)

Too much of a risk to captain benteke. He could explode but much safer to go with player in form, i.e. aguero or suarez.

Im about 60 points off the leader in my ML, do I go Benteke (c) for the risk - I am the only one in my ML that owns him.

Or go Suarez for a safer (c) - majority of my league own him.

It feels like this is the week to sacrifice RvP? Away to Spurs (if fit), whilst Aguero home to Swans...?

Would free up a bank of 2.2m too. Worried not having Utd cover going forward though, unless I sell Lukaku+Toure for Roon+5-6.0m mid...

    Decisions...

Have Arsenal ever been a mid table team? maybe a season in the early 90s and one or two in the 80s.

Man U however before Fergie were a mid table team for 25 years. Those days are coming back as you now have Moyles.

12 weeks in, the following is the season breakdown for FPL Bonus points:

      Total Games 120
Total Points 865 Average points per Game 7.2

      Goalkeepers 54 6.2%
      Defenders 326 37.7%
      Midfielders 252 29.1%
      Forwards 233 26.9%

While the Defenders/Keepers haul of Bonus points remain high (44%), Midfielders/Forwards have definitely upped their BAP haul in the last 3/4 weeks..........Week 12 saw Midfield/Forwards collect 58 of the 70 BAPS on offer.

As usual, defensive midfielders out in the cold..........

Since Jonty's tightrope hot topic was more like a noose around the neck... 😉

Here is today's REAL HOT TOPIC:

With 8 free trades remaining (some of us have 9...cough cough...)until the Jan WC*, and a congestion of fixtures around the corner(4 games in 10 days - GW 17-20) it's important to make those transfers count.

Depending on your position in your ML/h2h's what's the game plan? Go out 2013 with a bang and try and reel in ML leaders(with the risk of falling further behind) or just keeping the ship steady and wait until a rival has a captain fail to close the gap?

I for one have never had a good Festive Season fantasy wise. I can't put my finger on it, I have just never gotten what I wanted in my FPL Christmas stocking.

      Thoughts?

*Remember no FT are carried over once you activate your WC, so the week after you WC you will only have 1 FT.

christmas is gonna be amazing or semiaverage but no intentional punting or safeplaying. i just avoid rotation risks and let the points roll in. for example, im hoping aguero doesnt play 90 too often compared to benteke for example. suarez plays always. good defenders i like over christmas because they dont rotate, you never know mids (hazard, oscar etc. not gonna play every game) & fwds. so 4 "big" at the back and benteke should get me 7 consecutive green arrows

It's resulted in me getting in Aguero, Suarez, Rooney and Hazard at good, early times and flying up the rankings.
I think I'll keep taking the odd hit to sway around my mid price mids for others with easier fixtures and better form.. Keeps the game interesting as well.

          Wowza, someones having a go.

To be fair they've scored one goal in last 4 games and just been trounced 6-0. There'll be more knees wobbling in the spurs' boardroom than on here on a sun night!

You serious? Be very interested who they would replace him with were he to go. They can keep their hands of Harry!
