Even after an encouraging midweek tally, I’m resigned to the fact that my season is now about managing expectations. I have to shift my sights – forget about catching the Ramsey-carrying juggernauts, already established in the top 10k and instead attempt to win private battles and hit more modest targets.

It’s not an easy thing to admit and is undoubtedly a factor that leads to estimates that over 50% of Fantasy Premier League players become inactive by the turn of the year. Presumably, many of them find themselves cut adrift in mini-leagues, castaway from rivals and struggling to salvage motivation for the rest of the campaign.

That’s obviously not something I can entertain. Instead I have to believe I can close some gaps and rescue some respectability – I’ve never finished outside the top 30k – I’ve got believe I can somehow maintain that record.

This season’s trends to this point don’t make it easy, however. I look to my own ā€œcontributors leagueā€ and Evs at the top. He’s surely one of the very best FPL managers around (our own Hall of Fame certainly says so), his squad looks to be without an obvious weakness and, more significantly, completely unobtainable even if I sat here this morning toying with a Wildcard.

Such a situation is not just down to the emergence of the bandwagons – Ramsey, Yaya Toure, Mesut Ozil, Luis Suarez, Sergio Aguero – it’s been their continued strength week-to-week. This has led to these players climbing in price at pace, leaving those without them to hope that their output will stall. It simply hasn’t and, sitting here staring at Gameweek 15’s fixtures and beyond, I really can’t say with any assurance that those five won’t continue to maintain their impressive rate of scoring – they certainly have the class to carry it off.

The midweek hauls were a case in point. I only signed Luis Suarez and Sergio Aguero in Gameweek 13 – costing me far more than Evs paid. Had I not belatedly embraced the Suarez bandwagon, however, I would have been devastated by Wednesday’s events. And yet, those returns only helped me keep up – I can’t hope to make up ground on the top rank managers by being forced to adopt the same key players and paying more money for the privilege.

So, of course, I need to find something different. However, this season is not only typified by the strength of the bandwagons, it’s also seen a marked failure in players emerging to threaten the template. My stubborn resistance to adopt Ramsey continues and has seen me turn to a string of differentials – all, except Hazard, have failed me. I’m still waiting for Michu, Theo Walcott, Philippe Coutinho and David Silva to come along and truly shake things up – they’ve flirted with the idea but they’ve not delivered and it’s made it far too easy to sit on the established forward line and snuggle up to Toure, Ramsey and Ozil in midfield.

I have to believe that this will change. That somewhere along the line I’ll catch one of these emerging bandwagons and ride it for ten weeks while others stay clinging to the likes or Ramsey and Toure while their output stutters.

For now, I could settle for another Gameweek win over Granville, or perhaps even a few points back on Evs. In truth, however, it’s best to ignore their lineups. That’s coveting the unobtainable and setting unrealistic goals. I need to be content with small victories and hope that, eventually, the bandwagons will falter and that new opportunities will arise and that this time I’ll have the sense to pounce on them.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Update on my season:

GW1: After 1 game, Nicolas Anelka goes AWOL, reportedly retiring from football completely.
GW2: Ben Foster picks up an injury away at Everton, ruling him out until Christmas.
GW3: Just a week after I transferred him in, David Silva picks up an injury that rules him out for a month.
GW4: Having brought him in for Anelka a week earlier, Darren Bent is ruled out of Fulham’s home game with Swansea, having picked up an injury.
GW5: After restructuring my team to take a 12 point hit to bring him in a week earlier, Robin Van Persie is a mysterious omission from Man United’s trip to Man City. In the same week, my captain Theo Walcott pulls out of the Arsenal game against Stoke due to an injury that will keep him out for a couple of months.
GW6: Despite being declared fit, Robin Van Persie only takes his place on the bench due to injury, coming on for a 1 point cameo in a defeat at home to West Brom. James Collins is a mysterious omission from the West Ham line up at Hull. In the same game, James Chester is ruled out for Hull. Meanwhile in Everton, Hatem Ben Arfa has such a bad game for Newcastle that he is withdrawn at half-time, and his place in the starting line-up is consequently lost.
GW7: It is revealed that Robbie Brady will require surgery on a hernia. Spurs summer signing Roberto Soldado’s poor form means he is dropped to the bench for the home game with West Ham.
GW8: Jose Enrique is a mysterious omission from the Liverpool line-up away at Newcastle, and it revealed he has been playing through injury for the past few weeks.
GW9: In response to his poor form, Victor Moses loses his place in the Liverpool line up
GW10: Glen Johnson, who was transferred in for the injured Jose Enrique, is a mysterious omission from the Liverpool line-up away at Arsenal, meaning Michael Turner, who conceded 7 away at Man City, brings his -2 points into the team.
GW11: David Silva, who I transferred in a week previously, is injured in a Champions League game and ruled out for a month.
GW12: My captain Robin Van Persie is a mysterious omission from the Manchester United squad away at Cardiff. In the same week, Daniel Sturridge picks up an injury on International duty and is only fit enough for a substitute appearance away at Everton.
GW13: The night before the gameweek starts, it emerges that Daniel Sturridge has turned his ankle in training and will be out for a couple of months. Arnautovic also picks up an ankle injury. Michael Turner is a mysterious omission from the Norwich first team. Artur Boruc is forced of with an injury. And once again, Robin Van Persie misses out for Man United.
GW14: Having transferred Theo Walcott in for Mesut Ozil a couple of weeks ago due to his impending return, Walcott starts on the bench for the third consecutive game. Having brought him in for the injured Daniel Sturridge last week, Christian Benteke is dropped to to the bench.
GW15: Having watched RVP sit on the bench and Luis Suarez get a 24 point haul, I finally bite the bullet and admit it's time to go, with RVP once again rumoured to be out and David Moyes coy in his press conference. So after 3 weeks of injury, I decide to take RVP out. The day after, RVP starts at home to Newcastle.

I'm currently outside the top 1 million. Last year I finished 3833, the year before 21992, and the year before that 2870.

I can't quite believe how the season has panned out.

I dread to think what else could happen to my team today.

Ive had countless injuries and other players not playing etc. (Benteke, Toure, Brady, Chester, Walcott, Silva, Soldado, Bony and others)

Mainly I try and turn them to my advantage if possible. Ive only just shipped Brady (watch him score this week!) and Chester last week. Last season I had a bad year but finished strongly to finish 30k overall (not great, but compared to where i was earlier in the year pretty good!)

Much like Mark this season I would try and concentrate on a good second half. View it as a test of character and challenge to keep you record decent.

Some bad luck, but honestly, also some simply stupid decisions. Sorry for that wording, but some parts of your story just warrant it. There are points that are unbelievable, not because of bad luck, but because I can't believe you actually had that player in your team.

      1. Clinging on to RVP. I, too, took a hit to get him in early on when no other striker seemed reliable (bar Giroud and Sturridge, but I had them already). But I understood to ship him out when he seemed to have problems in every single match. That's too much money to waste on an unsure player. Especially as there were cheaper players producing. You're extremely lucky that because of constant flagging-unflagging you have not lost huge value for keeping him this long.

      2. Soldado. It's amazing that people think he is a world class striker. He is a striker who has made his career on scoring against weakest teams of La Liga, while playing for the third strongest team there, so receiving constant top level support. He has never been anything else but a finisher, and as that only a good one, not phenomenal. Holding him that long when clear options were available, was just stupid. When your expensive striker is benched for poor form, it's a clear signal you should not have hi in the first place.

      3. Transferring in an injured player (Walcott). That just doesn't make sense.

      4. Transferring in an out-of-form forward (Benteke) when in-form options are plenty. When an expensive striker is benched for poor form, it's a clear signal you should not have bought him that round.

      5. Holding Sturridge for too long when it was clear that it was Suarez you needed from Liverpool and nobody else. I did the same mistake, keeping Stu instead of Suarez, but was smart enough to swallow my pride and take hit to get Suarez back in his stead. To my defence, when I chose Sturridge, he was making more points than Suarez, not less. But it should not have taken anybody too many rounds to realize that Suarez is going to be the main asset this year.
