With Swansea’s home game against Hull set to play out the Gameweek tonight, we look at the lessons learned over the last few days. The impact of two new managers on the relegation contenders, United’s woeful home displays, Chelsea’s porous backline and the Emirates displays of Arsenal’s new boy are all served up this lunchtime:

Pulis has been quick to find another fortress…
A win and clean sheet in each of his first two home games at the Palace helm highlight the immediate impact of Tony Pulis. Following on from the good work of caretaker boss Keith Millen, the former Stoke manager has continued a run which has now earned four clean sheets in five Gameweeks, with a single goal conceded – an incredible turnaround in a backline that had previously shipped 21 goals in the first 10 Gameweeks. The upcoming home schedule looks superb, as does a home/away rotation with Cardiff all the way up to Gameweek 27 – all of a sudden the acquisition of Julian Speroni or Joel Ward looks like a canny move, as Pulis draws up the barricades and transforms Selhurst Park into his new Britannia.

Ozil loves his home comforts…
The Gunners summer signing served up yet another double figure return at the Emirates in yesterday’s draw with Everton. Whilst there’s no doubt Aaron Ramsey has been Arsenal’s most consistent Fantasy performer, Ozil’s explosive showings at the Emirates leave the Welshman trailing – in six appearances in front of his own fans, he has produced 10 or more points on four occasions, whilst Ramsey has managed this twice in eight Emirates showings. The flip side of this is a unimpressive run of form on the road, which has harvested three assists over six games, with blanks drawn on four occasions – a run of three road trips in the next four will prove a real test of his travel sickness.

United’s stage fright at home is a worry…
Eight home games have produced just eight goals as the champions continue to stutter under David Moyes. Wayne Rooney’s weekend suspension was lessened by Robin Van Persie’s return from injury but the champions blanked yet again in front of their own fans – Newcastle had been soundly beaten at Swansea in midweek but walked away from Old Trafford with three points and a clean sheet thanks to Yohan Cabaye’s solitary strike. Last term, United racked up 45 goals at home – more than any other side – and allowed Fantasy managers to rely on the Dutchman time and again, with points hauls almost guaranteed. This time round, only Villa and Palace have averaged fewer goals per game in front of their own fans. Three road trips to Villa, Hull and Norwich in the next four may suit Moyes’ side, then, as his Theatre of Dreams continues to look the stuff of nightmares.

Jose’s defence ain’t what it used to be…
Typically, trips to Sunderland and Stoke were likely to deliver clean sheets for Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in his first spell at the Bridge. Yet, in the past week, the Blues have conceded three to both sides on their travels as a real lack of solidity threatens to kill off their title bid – Mourinho has admitted that “individual mistakes” are proving costly as he attempts to strike a better balance on both sides of the pitch. Ironically, at a time where budget options such as Palace have improved at the back, Chelsea have gone the other way – two goals conceded in the first five has been followed by a single clean sheet in the subsequent ten, with 15 goals against over that run. The Special One may have criticised his attackers after the 3-2 loss at Stoke but Chelsea have hardly been goal-shy of late – they have now scored at least twice in all but one of their last nine, suggesting the finger of blame is perhaps best pointed at those further back.

Everton have the form to defy any fixture…
Trips to United and Arsenal in the past week were coloured a dark red in our fixture ticker – an indication of the difficulty level anticipated. The Toffees passed both tests with flying colours, defeating former boss David Moyes and denying the Gunners victory thanks to a late Gerard Deulofeu equaliser as they continued a superb start to the season which has seen them lose just once, away to City. Sitting fifth, Everton have now played every other side in the top seven – aside from the City loss, they have won three and drawn two and look able to go toe to toe with the best of them. Next up, Martinez’ side are handed an eye-catching run of games in the next six (FUL, swa, SUN, SOU, sto, NOR) and may only be derailed by complacency – an unlikely scenario, though, as the Toffees continue to offer us outstanding value for the festive season and beyond.

The Etihad mauling may be the making of Spurs…
A 6-0 defeat at City could easily have had long-lasting repercussions but Andre Villas-Boas’ side have quickly regrouped and come out fighting. Seven points from the last three games sees them sitting just three points off second and has coincided with a new-found eye for goal – Spurs have now scored twice in every game since the Etihad hammering, compared to nine strikes in the first 12 Gameweeks. The defensive solidity that produced seven clean sheets in the first 10 Gameweeks may have vanished, with the north London club conceding in every game, but Spurs’ improved attacking consistency may well offer us options if they can maintain their recent form in front of goal – three home games in four hand Villas-Boas the chance to make this Christmas a merry one at the Lane.

Meulensteen could be the spark Berbatov needs…
Let’s face it, regardless of his side’s perilous league position, Dimitar Berbatov is never one to roll his sleeves up and get stuck in. While there’ll be no lung-bursting runs in an attempt to win back possession, the Bulgarian offers the Cottagers a real touch of class that is devoid amongst the rest of the relegation contenders – harnessing his talents is clearly essential to Rene Meulensteen’s prospects of keeping the London club afloat. It’s so far so good, then, with Berbatov’s goal and assist in the new manager’s first two matches mirroring his tally from the 13 matches played out under Martin Jol – blanks in the upcoming two against Everton and City would be understandable but with Norwich, Hull, West Ham and Sunderland directly after, the Bulgarian may finally be worth considering again if his displays continue to improve under his former United first-team coach.

Mmmm...FPL managers not impressed much by Ozil's 32 points over three games and showing just a 1% increase on the day....In context Aguero has just 13 pts over the same time frame.

Man city away and £10.3m price tag putting people off. Less people that buy him the better as keeps him as a slight differential.

I missed him the first time around as he went off the scale...I'm into the Howard transfer for this week but if Ozil blanks over the next couple of games he may welll fall dramatically (fixtures)...If not i may be forced to get him next week, bad fixtures or not. He's a better pick than Hazard imo.

Well, as the article says, he isn't too clever away from home. And with possibly their most difficult away fixture up next, you can't really blame people for delaying getting him in.

Alright lads, how is everyone doing? What would you do with this lot?

    Migs
    Terry, Chester, Coleman
    Hazard, Gerrard, Amalfitano, Ramsey
    Rooney (C), Suarez, Lukaku

    Subs: Burner, Janujaz, Koscielny

    1 FT, 1.0 banked

    A) Migs -> Howard, bench Gerrard and play Burner
    B) Gerrard -> Silva (if fit)
    C) Gerrard -> Oscar (if fit)
    D) Gerrard -> Mirallas
    E) Both A + another for a hit.
    F) Something else?

But I can replace Gerrard with any MF in the game except from Ozil. If I was to keep him (only if he will make CAR) I may as well use my FT on Mignolet who needs to go soon.

Hey guys! A red arrow this GW, although not too big a tumble down the rankings :/
2FTs and 2.2M in the bank, what do you think of these guys?

    Mignolet
    BTurner Terry Evans
    RMorrison Ramsey Sessegnon Hazard
    Suárez Agüero Remy

    Subs: Gazzaniga Bannan Mertesacker Gabbidon

I'm thinking Remy & Mignolet -> Lukaku & Howard. Happy to keep Sess for a game or two more, his fixtures are still great. Thoughts?

      Ramsey / Sess / Gerrard / Morrison / Brady

      Suarez, Aguero, Rooney

      I have 2FT and £1.2 ITB

    Captain Poll so far....

    Lukaku - FUL - 29%
    Hazard - CPL - 18%
    Rooney - avl - 15%
    Suarez - tot - 14%
    Aguero - ARS - 11%

While I am sure captain sensible article will cover this very soon, I am (happily) surprised to see this week captains poll so different to recent weeks. It has gotten a little predictable with Suarez and Aguero but this will be the week where people will see some serious movement judging from this poll....

Are 29% of you REALLY captaining Lukaku or are you just voting for him because you only wish you had the balls to?

Is anyone REALLY considering (C) Eden? Surely he isnt consistent enough?

I have Suarez/Roo/Aguero and I am rather stuck this week!!

I agree on Hazard not being consistent enough. Could just as easily pull out a 2 as much as a 15. I am going with the consistent and still fairly explosive Rooney. His form is too good to ignore and he's just had a rest as well.

Hazard nowhere near consistent enough to earn armband. Aguero is the logical choice here given their home form. Lukaku is worthy of a small gamble if one felt inclined.

So that's the problem we need to solve.

Everton have great fixtures but each of their fantasy prospects come at a cost.

    Lukaku - Suarez, Aguero, Rooney
    Deulofeu - Suarez, Aguero, Rooney
Barkley - rotated and possibly, urgh, benched for easier games
    Mirallas - lol
Pienaar - might as well be Barry or Osman as things stand.

    Thoughts?

Superstition aside, I can't see them actually getting more clean sheets at a greater rate than they have been. That would put them on course for 20+ clean sheets which is United 2011/12 levels of miserliness. I just can't believe that. Needless to say I am prepared for egg on face.

With premium midfielders slowly coming back to fore, I think Lukaku is a good way to go. Rooney'll also be losing some set-pieces and possibly penos with RVP coming back. That's the approach I'm taking anyways.

Lukaku over Rooney unless you own him already.
Deulofeu - if only he was midf I'll be all over him
Barkley - 0 return in the last 8.
      Mirallas - Deulofeu threat.
Pieenar - haven't even considered him as an FPL player this year

Lukaku Coleman for me. Plus Howard if you want to go all in

I think mirallas is a case of a quality player who is off form though. If that form hits again he could rake in some points at a bargain price.

Saying that, i do worry it won't hit quick enough to stop Deulo to start pinching his place;.

There has been a lot of hate towards 'casual players' of late, getting jammy bandwagon points or pricing us out of players with silly transfer decisions (see many annoyed with Ozil's price dropping) and whilst I have had my gripes, I don't really see the problem at this stage of the game. Yes, a lot of the players most transferred in are Everton players, but they are in good form, and how many of have/are considering tripling on them (myself included).
We all convinced ourselves that Ramsey was a flash in the pan. I myself laughed at the thought of Yaya Toure producing consistent points, as when I played this game as a 'casual' last year I had him and he did rather well. Now he is on direct free kicks, and possibly penalties.
The Christmas period is time for us to catch up, to make smart decisions and field at starting 11 week in week out, when our casual rivals stop paying attention.
Time to bring the pain. Time to drag ourselves into the top positions.

Who will the next 'casual' players main protagonist? Howard?

Yes my question in addition to your post is why posters here get upset with casuals... there is way more wrong with the system of flagging players when a manager whispers knock than casual players, over the season their jammy decisions will hardly pay off.
If casuals played every week then the obvious repercussion is they would also have a higher points tally.,

Redmond impressed me when I watched him play vs Liverpool. In a poor Norwich performance, he was the shinning light. Every time I've seen him play he has looked dangerous. I'm considering bringing him in for Brady this GW. But I dont want to be doing that and then benching him at home vs. Swansea. The other cheap mid I have is Ravel Morrison. Surely he has to play this week to?

Some very quick Rooney vs. Lukaku analysis assuming you have a budget of 18.5 million for a striker and midfielder and the number of extra points that 3million gets you.

    http://www.freeimagehosting.net/y2wdx

Lukaku plus a premium midfielder fairs marginally better roughly 12.6 ppg compared to 11.1 ppg (depending on who you choose obviously).

The interesting part from them now is upcoming fixtures since they already faced Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool, United, City, and Arsenal. (2W 3D 1L).

When they will meet those 6 teams again in the second half season, they will face Arsenal, City, and United at home.

Probably too early, but i see they can be UCL place contender this season if they can maintain their form.

I own Coleman, but with no other pressing transfers this week, and in light of Liverpool's 3 horrible away fixtures in the next 4 am considering just a sideways Migs to Howard transfer this week.

Cheeky double up from now til my January WC could pay off. If not it's not the end of the world, he can't do any worse than Migs ATM with Liverpool's penchant for conceding in easy games

Unfortunately I seem to have missed a Migs price drop, so it'll cost me an extra 0.2 to own Howard over him.

Anyone else doing the same transfer?

Probably going against most of you but I'm having both until January WC. They rotate brilliantly and I've got spare cash so gonna gamble Liverpool turn it round a bit in home games and Everton do the same.

I have done this once with a player out and got burned with a warm-up injury. Serves me right. Never again.

Am I the only one who has looked at Lukaku OUT - Deulofeu IN and then using the cash elsewhere?

I know he is playing on the wing, but seriously, he is a massive goal threat, he came on against Liverpool and should of scored. Its very very nearly £3.0m to spend somewhere else......

Why do we overlook a producing player, simply because FPL has him as a Striker and not a Midfielder?

Correction - He plays on the bench, sometimes on the wing.

Not worthy of consideration as a striker due to vast array of other options, I wouldn't get him as a midfielder either until his minutes are more assured.

Yes. That's always an important factor. Besides he's nowhere near nailed-on status.

No, we overlook a player because he doesn't start regularly.

The prevailing wisdom seems to be if a player is OOP in a positive way (ie a defender playing as an attacking MF) then he is a good pick. If it works the other way (like Deulofeu) then it is a bad pick, as you are only getting striker points for a goal (4) instead of MF points(5+CSposs).

In practice it does not make sense to call it a deal breaker. Using this logic would mean that an OOP defender for a poor team, who was neither getting CS nor actually scoring any goals or assists, is a better pic than someone like Oviedo or Deulofeu.

Clearly, if the player is getting points then he is a GOOD FANTASY PICK, regardless of whether he would be getting a couple of extra points if properly classified.

In the cases of Oviedo and Deulofeu, if they are actually getting regular game time the would seem to be good picks just based on the price alone.

4.3 for a mid - I mean who else can you put in for that? Jordan Mutch? You can't complain about a 4.3 MF.

Deulofeu doesn't seem to get much gametime is the big problem with him, and Oviedo has the threat of Baines recovery putting him out of the team, but at 4.3 has to be worth a punt.

I'm actually very interested to buy Oviedo. he's not classified as defender indeed, but therefore i can play him without worried at him to lost 4 points 😉 (CS points for defender)

Is Howard, Coleman, Barkley (rotating with Redmond) enough, too much or too little?

Could switch next GW Rooney to Lukaku and Barkley to 8+?
