Sergio Aguero’s calf injury in the 6-3 win over Arsenal has served up a potential major setback for thousands of Fantasy managers. With Manuel Pellegrini offering us little insight into the severity of the injury and a scan imminent, we can only wait on news from the Etihad. However, resident Fantasy Football Scout physio, Facer, has made a timely return to offer his early view. Analysing the incident involved and Aguero’s reaction and movement, here’s Facer’s detailed report and his take on the likely prognosis.

The incident occurred barely a minute into the second half and gives a clear indication of the mechanism of injury. Playing a one-two with David Silva, Sergio Aguero receives the ball and with one touch plays it back into the path of Silva. Almost immediately Aguero starts to limp and, several seconds later, in an attempt to take the pressure from the injury, falls on to his back. At first glance the incident looked fairly innocuous, but with closer inspection, we see that the former Atletico man didn’t quite have the time to position himself correctly and improvises a one-touch pass into Silva’s run with a subtly excessive rotation at the right hip. This is significant because the contracting Gluteal muscles produce a rotatory force at the hip and, with the studs of Aguero’s right boot planted firmly in the ground, severely restricting movement at the hip and ankles, this force had nowhere to go, resulting in a tear to one of the calf muscles.

As Aguero is lying on the ground his demeanour is interesting. He does not appear to be in a great deal of pain and he is not reaching for the injury. In terms of severity, these are positive signs. Suffering a severe calf strain is like being shot in the back of the leg and Aguero would have hit the ground immediately and would need to have been stretchered off. We then see the Argentine hobble from the field. It is worth noting that, although exhibiting severely restricted movement at the right ankle, Aguero is able to partially weight bear on the injured limb, giving us a further clue as to the severity and likely duration of any absence. Similarly, as Aguero is led from the field, we can observe him palpating the back of his calf towards the ‘belly’ of the Gastrocnemius, suggesting a tear to the meat of the muscle rather than attachments, which heals more quickly. In summary, I would suggest that Aguero has suffered a grade 1-2 calf strain, which would see him sidelined for a minimum of 10 days, but more likely 2-3 weeks. Sadly for his owners, that would see Aguero miss at least the next three league outings.

A Scout Disclaimer: While Facer offers an expert’s view of such injuries, with just a remote assessment to go on, the opinions expressed here should not be taken as fact or acted on with any degree of certainty.

True, we can't act on it, but it gives some great insight into the incident from a qualified eye. Will be interesting to get City's verdict - I just hope it arrives in the next 48-hours.

  2. More Aguero replacement options
    The Sarjeant

With Sergio Aguero highly likely to be out for numerous weeks, many of us are looking for the ideal candidate to replace the Argentine with. Here's my choices on who to replace him with, even if some of them are a bit obvious.

Luis Suarez is the stand out option here after scoring two more goals against Tottenham, taking his FPL total up to 16 goals after playing under 1000 minutes. Most fantasy football managers will have already picked up the Liverpool forward many weeks ago. But if you already have his talent in your squad, then the search continues.

There's talk amongst the community of doing a straight swap to fellow Man City forward, Alvaro Negredo. The Spaniard is quite capable of scoring goals, after notching 25 goals in the league last season for former club Sevilla and 7 for his new side so far this season. At a price of £9.3m he's a perfect fit for those who want reassurance capitalising on Man City's goal scoring form.
There's also talk of two other strong contenders in Wayne Rooney and Romelu Lukaku. Their respective clubs have favourable fixtures for the next five gameweeks at a minimum. Both of these players are currently on form, having each scored 3 goals in their past five games and 8 goals overall in the league. Whilst Rooney has assisted double the amount of goals Lukaku has, Lukaku may be the better pick here, as £2.5m is the difference between the two. These extra funds may be needed in the coming weeks as the likes of Silva and Walcott are back from injury and starting to be amongst the goals yet again.

Those four players mentioned, Suarez, Negredo, Rooney and Lukaku, are the clear stand out choices. But there are some other players who have been on good form recently, which have slipped under the radar for some, and others who have the fixtures to support them pick up some decent returns.

Olivier Giroud is a man who isn't on form at all, after neither scoring or assisting a single goal in the past four gameweeks, having played three matches. This may be due to the French mans lack of rest, after playing 2,139 minutes out of a possible 2,700 in all competitions for club and country this season. But, the Gunners fixtures after entertaining Chelsea at the Emirates this coming weekend become increasingly attractive. The five fixtures after the Chelsea game are; whm / new / CAR / avl / FUL. Don't let these three away fixtures put you off investing, as Arsenal have scored the joint highest goals away from home with Liverpool and Man United - 17, with Giroud only scoring 3 of these out of his 7 league goals. Managers who invest in the Arsenal forward could be rewarded with decent returns in those five matches, if he finds his form once again.

The two main forwards who could be a fruitful replacement to Aguero, who are much more of a differential compared to the other players mentioned so far, are Dimitar Berbatov and Gary Hooper.

Dimitar Berbatov didn't start his campaign off successfully under Martin Jol, after only managing to find the next once in the 11 games that he started. Under Martin Jol the forward managed 14 shots, with 12 of these coming from inside the box. But with Fulham's acquisition of new manager Rene Meulensteen, Berbatov has had 12 shots in total, with 11 of these inside the box, which has resulted in 2 goals. This has come in just 3 matches. Dimitar Berbatov could be a golden buy for anyone investing in the forward over the next five fixtures, for only a mere £7m. Fulham's next five fixtures are MCI / nor / hul / WHM / SUN.

Former Celtic striker Gary Hooper has flown completely under the radar, and I'm very surprised his name hasn't been mentioned more across the community. The Norwich front man has scored 4 goals in the past 6 matches for the Canaries, after only playing 22 minutes in one of those matches. Since Hooper found his goal scoring feet in gameweek 11, only Aguero and Suarez have a better 'minutes per goal,' out of any player who has played at least 360 minutes across the 6 gameweeks. If his form was to continue, then the downgrade to the £6.1m player would result in a lot of freed up funds to invest else where in your team.

These two players are my differential picks, who could help managers climb the rankings going into the new year. Berbatov has an ownership of 3.2% and Hooper is owned by only 0.8%.

    Other notable on form players who have all scored at least 2 goals in the past 5 matches are;

    Chamakh - 3 goals.
    Gouffran - 3 goals.
    Rodriguez - 3 goals.
    Long - 2 goals.
    Osvaldo - 2 goals.

I! went for Rooney (got Zabs and Yaya).

As was mentioned earlier by Demba, I don't think Rooney's position today will be permanent and he was on my wqatchlist before today anyway.

Negredo wasn't....and I already had Suarez and Lukaku.

        HI sporting

sensationalist? not sure about that, speculative, yes...there are are a myriad of factors to take into consideration when offering a prognosis on a hands-off observational assessment and care-pathways can change, but in my defence i am a fully qualified sports physiotherapist, with over 10 years experience who works as a physio for a Premier League football club...but your quite right, it is an opinion piece and i would wait for confirmation from official sources before acting...

Hooper's clinical. The main problem is creating chances. We're extremely unlikely to score more than 2 goals in a match due to Hughton's approach, rightly or wrongly.

If you want a differential or a budget striker to allow for a big midfield than you could do worse. However RVW is back next game and could limit Hoopers game time to 70-75mins.

Hooper and Berbatov both on pens. Tough choice, maybe Hooper for the extra money saved. However I would still advice to go for a big 3 strike-force.

I don't think we need to worry if we didn't captain suarez this week. It was logical to have Aguero as captain or Lukaku for that matter so all people who captained Suarez are either casual player who won't be competing till the end who just went for a punt or they were people who simply forgot to change their captain choice, and therefore should not be a threat to the ffs keen players. It is logic not random punts that win you most of the time imo.

not this season, and tbf suarez was a very valid pick given his form and spurs problems in defence, some ppl on this site picked him for that very reason and obviously benefitted today........

Disagree, and I captained Rooney not Suarez. Suarez is in incredible form, Spurs have conceded a lot recently and are playing Capoue at CB. There were just 3 or 4 good options, many were always going to pick the wrong one.

Best striker in the world at the moment. Aguero was against league leaders Arsenal with a stubborn defence. Lukaku in good form but I didn't want to place the armband on him. Been stung before by that against Palace.

Uncertain of what to do, the best logical choice for me was to leave it on the player banging in goals for fun. Cleared 100 points this week. Chuffed to bits 8)

Still in a sense of shock after todays game. Really amazed by how well we played. If it weren`t for the tough fixtures, Sterling or Henderson could really be worth a shout. Very impressed with Rodgers and the way he comes on in the media, looks like a top, top man. Top four looking more and more possible, think we just need a couple of signings in January and we should have a good chance!

He stood by Henderson when the mighy SAF insulted his ability. Sterling was excellent, Townsend with a brain, very similiar to a lad at QPR, Matt Phillips. Actually had Sterling, looked a steal at the price, didn't expect returns today, however against lesser sides and with Suarez nearby, always a chance of returns.

While i agree with the critics saying Hendo was overpriced, the way he`s developed during Brendan`s reign is just unbelievable. I said when Brendan took charge of the club that i really expected Henderson to shine after reading about the way he wanted to play football, and obviously from watching the Swansea games, and he`s really stepped up. Sterling is a fantastic talent, people seem to forget that he`s only 19, had a rough patch including a trial and some other stuff, but he could very well turn into a class player. Most of all i just like the way the clubs beeing ran, its really a huge huge upswing as a life long Liverpool fan, especially after Kenny/Hodgson`s catastrophical reigns. The continued hard work, on and off the pitch and the firmness shown by the manager and the club really warms my heart. You could say that LFC has lost a lot of respect by captaining Suarez after all the sh*t he`s done, but i say he`s shown great signs of improving as a player under Brendans management. Yes he still does stupid things and has that cheat element still, but thats in his veins nad takes time to fix. Im simply over the moon at the moment! 😀

Thought he was superb, looked sharp from the get go. Played well last match as well. Like i said, people forget how young he is and ignore the fact that he`s had a rough few months off the pitch, and the club has brought in quite a few players in direct competition for him. The fact that he seems to have clawed his way back is to me very impressive.

Meaning no disrespect to other teams and keeping the Hull game fresh in mind, going up against lower opposition teams have kind of been LFC`s strong side during BR`s management. And the way the team and Suarez are performing at the moment, i`d seriously expect nothing but a hammering. But its the BPL, and no games are easy.

Henderson played like we all hoped he would today, he works much better centrally. The fact he has better attacking returns then Coutinho is an indication of how much better players play when they are in the position they want to be.

Life-long Pool fans here. Love what BR has done to the team since his take-over. You could sense a philosophy started to plant into the team last season, and it works out well this year when the players understand the game plan more and more. Our playing style is a lot more attractive but also effective than the era of Dalglish or Hogson, so I won't have any complaint even if we can't get into top 4.

Agree Henderson is over-priced, but "buy him right" is more important than "buy him cheap but not fit in". He is a great runner and space coverer, and very versatile (DM/RM/CM). What makes him successful is his determination to change his style to fit in BR's tactics. For me, he is a younger version of James Milner. But fantasy-wise, his price ($5.9) looks very awkward to own.

Sterling is $4.9 and obviously a lot more ownable. He played quite well for previous 2 games. He plays similar to the position of Walcott, a right winger standing really upfront and being the first one to break the line of opponent's defence. The thing is, if Suarez is willing to be a passer like the TOT match, Sterling will receive tons of opportunities every match, which is something I really doubt in long-run. Moreover, he is really wasteful in front of goal most of the time, so expect to give him 8 clear-cut chance and he will score you one. But no matter what, a $4.9 winger with some services playing regularly at a top-4 team (at least now) is a steal. He could easily match the output of Barkley and Januzaj until Sturridge recovers.

But if talking about wasteful, I can't see anyone can beat Coutinho. Hope he can regain some of his confidence asap. His shooting let him down and if this goes on, I expect his general performance will be severely affected. In fantasy world, I would recommend everyone to avoid him, or sell him after the Hull game if you are having him.

Another lifelong pool fan here, and wow was I wrong about how we'd do against Spurs.
I think Hendo has just had the game of his life and from an fpl point of view am not sure if that means he's about to go on an incredible run or whether we shouldn't get too excited until he does it on a regular basis.
      5-0 though wowowweewah! 🙂

I can see a template team coming in the January WC.

What we know so far are:
    1) Strikers as usual keep bringing home the bacon
    2) Old time favourites big hitting midfielder are starting to emerge.
    3) Ramsey still offering massive value despite his price rise
    4) There are value in cheap defenders
    5) Non rotating GK FTW, how many of you have been burnt by playing the wrong keeper?

And this trend doesn't seem gonna be over soon.

From this we can draw something like this:

GK: A 5-6m non-rotating GK. (Jask, Boruc, Mignolet, Howard, etc) and 3.9m Davis

DEF: Who doesn't have Coleman these days? One mid priced and 3 rotating cheapos to give budget up front.

MID: 3 or 4 of Hazard, Wally, Silva, Ramsey, Ozil, Yaya, Nasri, Oscar + mid price midf + Ravel / Redmond / cheapos

FWD: a/s/l, SAR, the usual suspects

From that 5 minute analysis alone and a quick look at the ticker, I can already see my Jan WC team actually

    Jaask, Davis
    Coleman Clyne Burner Collins Chester
    Walcott Silva Hazard Ramsey Ravel
    Suarez Aguero Lukaku

I'm just gonna potate this post by asking the first official RMWCT out of 10. Nah jokes.
But seriously we'll see something along that line a lot during the January window.

Is it "safe" to sell Ramsey for Walcott?

For -4 I could go Aguero+Ramsey+Williams>Rooney+Walcott+Ward. I was late for the Ramsey bandwagon anyway, so I'll only lose 0.3 on him in case I'd want him back for the Jan WC.

That's my worry. On the flipside though; if I had done it before this GW, Walcott's haul would have seen my leaping up on the rankings.

Question is really who I think will score most points.

            Silva, Hazard, Whit, Cabaye

Of that lot I am only really considering shipping Cabaye, but then I need some more money got be able to afford Walcott. Negredo instead of Rooney would solve the whole problem, but I am not sure if I'd be more worried going Roo-less than Wally-less for the next few weeks.

When you look at liverpool player, only suarez, coutinho, gerrad and sturridge are the world class player type. Compare to city, chelsea, arsenal and spurs which have more than a half team that is a very good player... honestly, really impressed with the form of liverpool so far, mainly that because of simply masjestic suarez, but the team should be given a credit too....hope liverpool can get 3 or 4 creative player in midfield so that the team can be a serious contender and not fully put a burden on suarez

Suarez is world class. Mignolet's getting there. Sturridge might get there if this season's momentum continues. Debateable if Gerrard was ever world class, great engine, decision making not always top drawer. Past that stage now. Coutinho might get there. But a long way yet from the standard of an in-form Ozil, Mata or Silva. I'm biased though cos I'll always play down Pool players 😉

He's been brilliant. Just that I wouldn't put him in a world class bracket. Is he in the same bracket as a Zidane, a Ronaldo or a Figo?

He would have been world class if they left him as an attacking midfielder or number 10. I think that was his strength. Him and Torres together were unreal. Probably world class back then alright.

Instead he's been a jack-of-all-trades master of none. Been very good playing on the wing, defensive midfielder, holding midfielder, even played at right back. He tries too hard sometimes and his discipline used to let him down sometimes.I like the fact that he'll play anywhere for Liverpool FC but I don't think they got the best of his talent.

if your definition of "world class" is limited only to the likes of zidane, ronaldo, messi etc then there are probably only a handful of players ever to be in that category.

as a united fan, are there any united players in the past 20 years in that category? because thats a pretty limited definition.

Schmeicel,Scholes, Van Nistleroy, Ronaldo, Stam. Apologies.I'll forget loads of them.

I'd leave Cantona out of that cos he didn't really do it in Europe for United.

Many would say Keane. He was a great defensive midfielder, a leader but not enough skill, for me, to be called world class footballer but I'd say a world class defensive midfielder.

United rightly had world class players, they're the ones winning leagues year in year out. My favourite United players through the years were Scholes and Sparky, an animal!

My favourite PL player was Bergkamp. For me he was world class, a genius, but it's all a matter of opinion.

id say liverpools areas for improvement would be LB (someone who can get forward like Coentrao would be perfect for their style), another DM in case Lucas gets injured, and better attacking players for the bench in wide areas (Moses, Sterling are not necessarily game changers off the bench)

Faraway hills are not always greener. Flanagan could well be a decent LB. Need a LB who can defend better than Enrique or Cisokho rather than one who's good attacking. I think longterm they need a better quality DM than Lucas. Not easy to find but someone of the quality of Keane, Mascherano or Makelele in their prime. Sterling might yet do well, he's still very young. Moses probably not. Alberto and Ibe possibly could come through for Pool.

Ok I'm gonna think of it this way

    Either getting

    a) A star striker who have to play in the midfield just to get things moving for his funny, out-of-sort of a team lately
    b) A true no 9 forward whose team is banging in goals for fun and now handed the sole responsibility to score for the team and will be feed off by 3 world class attacking midfielders and wingers.

    I'll chose B.
