Boxing Day confirms the arrival of one heavy-hitting Gunners midfield asset, only for their star middle man to suffer an injury that threatens to trigger a wave of transfer activity. While thousands of Fantasy managers will be occupied by that particular pairing, a certain Saints striker remains largely ignored as he goes on providing ample points for a paltry sum.

The Game Changer

Theo Walcott’s impact on his return from injury has been almost instant. His brace at Upton Park turned the game Arsenal’s way and confirmed that Walcott is back amongst the top-level Fantasy assets available.

In truth, we’ve been crying out for Walcott’s arrival in our season. His record of 14 goals and 13 assists last season pointed towards great things this campaign but, derailed by injury, Walcott’s Fantasy potential has been tempered as the midfield has failed to keep pace with the output of our forwards. Until now.

Four goals in his three league starts suggest that Walcott can compete with the very top midfield assets, surpassing the scoring rate of his much-vaunted team-mates Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey through sheer goal power. With David Silva and Eden Hazard also showing some consistency, focus is back on the expensive midfield targets.

Owned by just 5% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, a state of alert was declared with Walcott’s previous brace, mentioned in this article. Today’s returns will heighten that initial interest into a frenzy which is likely to accelerate significantly as January wildcards are laid down.

The Underused

The Gameweek drew focus on our Fantasy forward lines, as we contemplated the gamble of overlooking the devastating form of Luis Suarez. The likes of Wayne Rooney and Romelu Lukaku tempted the armband with so many Fantasy managers boasting one or both in their squads. Indeed, despite the recent injury to Sergio Aguero, few have considered dismantling their “template” strike force – it’s meant that Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez has struggled to get the Fantasy recognition he deserves.

Rodriguez notched a brace and an assist in Southampton’s fine 3-0 win at Cardiff to take him to eight league goals from his last 12 starts. That kind of strike rate, for an FPL fee of just 6.0, allows him to top the “value” rankings on 13.6, ahead of Luis Suarez.

Just as there is no doubt about the established pool of players that make up the typical forward line, there can be little argument on which player offers the best value for those who choose to risk plunging the price brackets.

Right now only 6% have dared cheapen their forward line and take up the Rodriguez option. With further heavy-hitting midfield options opening up, it will interesting to see how the January wildcard changes that particular statistic.

The Selection Poser

Aaron Ramsey’s rise to near essential status has been slowed of late thanks to a harsh fixture list and the potential return of Theo Walcott. Today’s events not only underlined Walcott’s appeal as an explosive alternative to Ramsey, it also saw the Welshman suffer an injury that could signal the first significant bout of sales.

Arsene Wenger has announced that Ramsey’s thigh injury suffered in the second-half at West Ham today, will rule him out for the rest of the Christmas programme. While some will wait for scans and further details, the news will mean Ramsey will sit out matches with Newcastle and Cardiff in the next four days. A Gameweek 21 return on January 13 could be on the cards, although the nature and severity of the injury is not yet clear.

Significantly, the injury comes off the back of a spell that has seen Ramsey return goals in just one of his last eight league matches. While a pair of assists has calmed any panic, that dip in form, coupled with today’s injury, will likely prove the catalyst for sales.

Having risen to 7.6 form an initial value of 5.5, Ramsey has a long way to fall, with thousands set to sacrifice funds when the decision to sell on is made. Again, the January wildcard will bring the Ramsey situation into focus. There’s little doubt that if Ramsey goes into the New Year sidelined, as expected, we will see a lot of movement away from the season’s stand-out midfielder, heading in the direction of Walcott. Current transfer statistics in the FPL already confirm such a trend, with Walcott and Ramsey topping the transfers in and out tables just a few hours after the final whistle.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Repost as I may not be around tomorrow:

How is this looking going into the weekend (transfers are done with a -4)?

Suggestions would be welcomed for captaincy, bench, etc.

    Mannone
    Lovren (i), Jagielka, Debuchy
    Sterling, Yaya, Walcott, Cabaye
    Rooney (c), Suarez, Negredo (v)

    Meyler, Distin, Baker

    Cheers!

Southampton look to be picking up steam; so I was on the fence having 2 Everton back there (I had triple Everton the last few weeks and it blew up on me).

In my mind, Lovren isn't playing and Distin will step off the bench.

    Ok so,

    a) Ramsey Howard -> Cabaye Mannone (-4)
    b) Ramsey Howard -> Sterling Mannone (-4)
    c) Ramsey Negredo -> Sterling Rooney (-4)
    d) Ramsey Negredo Howard -> Cabaye Rooney (c) Mannone (-8)
    e) Ramsey Negredo Howard -> Sterling Rooney (c) Mannone (-8)

Got no playing GK, so it's a 2 point hit for Howard to Mannone really.
Will wait for presser before doing Negredo to Rooney (c)

Did Howard touch Ki in the box? Looked a bit of a dive, but I'd have to see it again. There may be a slight (and I mean slight) chance that the red card is rescinded. I wouldn't exactly bet on it though, and once again, I would like to see another replay.

    Sorry for repost

    Rather frustrating round
    What transfers should i make

0.9 in the bank, only 1 FT
    Marshal (4.0) - Etheridge
    Coleman (6.0) - Vlaar (injury, 4.4) - Flanagan (injury 4.5) - Mertesacker (5.8) - Chester (3.8)
    Ramsey (injury) (6.9) - Walcott (9.1) - Hazard (9.6) - Yaya (9.3) - Januzaj (4.8)
    Rooney (11.4) - Lukaku (8.4) - Suarez (12.4)

Is it worth transfering out Ramsey with all the profit i've made on him? Should i sell ramsey and flanagan/vlaar for Sterling/Barkley and Kompany. How important is it to get rid of the injured defenders?

Would appreciate any kinds of advice

A few notes on the Arsenal striker situation.

Interesting looking at the deployment of Walcott, Podolski and Giroud especially given the hope that either of the other two could play center forward instead of the latter. Looking at the subs and positions in the West Ham game, it looks like both were definitely used in the roles we're familiar with, though. Arsenal were playing their usual 4-2-3-1 with Walcott cutting in from the right. After Ramsey was subbed off for Podolski, they actually went 4-1-4-1ish with Podolski wide left and Cazorla and Ozil at CAM. This gave Arsenal a lot of width to stretch the play (something I've been crying out for for months, hallelujah) and three goals.

When Wenger looked to kill the game, he switched back to 4-2-3-1 with Ozil being replaced by Flamini and Cazorla moving to the hole. The final sub was to swap Giroud for Bendtner with him playing a similar role.

I think as things stand, it's more likely that Podolski and Walcott will be used as wide forwards to add something desperately missing from Arsenal's game of late: width. Cazorla hasn't impressed Wenger much of late and only played because Rosicky was injured. It's possibly he could be rotated with Podolski on the left a fair bit with Walcott firmly anchored to his inside right role.

Nice analysis.. Pretty much what I thought, but in less depth.

Width was the reason of our undoing in many games, especially against United.
Caz seems to be a bit under the pressure. He needs a confidence building talk it seems.

Whatever we have, it still doesn't circumvent the need for an out and out striker.

And I'm really pessimistic if we're gonna get one.
I'd be happy even if we get Llorente on load. G-ru is a bit too much strained, physically and mentally.

I'd probably consider 3-4-3 with Barkley as the starter over one the 2 Everton defenders. Barkley only played 45 today so probably in line for a start Saturday I don't see an Everton cleansheet against a Southampton team playing well atm....

I'd play Barkley over Chester and I would recommend taking out Ramsey if you have an FT, if not keep him on the bench this week

Not Chester you seen the way he's playing the past GW's. I'm not naive enough to do such a thing

Make sure you have a solid VC, I would recommend Rooney myself in case Negredo is rested. Speroni GK is a little worysome but you should be all set and very happy provided Everton can finally keep a cleanie

No easy captains this weekend?? Rotation and fatigue going to be a major factor again, so ideally we require a nailed on starter that will get "easy" points.

Rooney away at Norwich - despite playing deep is he worthy of the armband?
Who will play for City?? Negredo limped off so will Dzeko start, will Silva have a break?
Has Lukaku shot his load early? 5 without a goal and not much happening around him either.
Arsenal have a tough away game so is Walcott likely to produce again?
Chelsea home again v Liverpool, is Hazard too much of a punt - Mingelot not gonna throw another in, is he?
Or do we rely on old faithful Suarez at Chelsea - surely he is due a goal???
    Any others worthy considering?

      It'll be Rooney for me.

I think the happy one is happier now he can aim for 1-0 again so that will keep Suarez quiet, Hazard will be lonely in the Chelsea team as the only one thinking of going forward and although Wally is on great form but very few score well after two in the previous game.

    Walcott: to pik him up,
need to downgrade Terry to 5.2 Def, best option? thx

    1--Debuchy 5.1
2--Sakho 5.2 (seems locked in and Liv sems to hav decent fixtures)
    3--Evans 5.0
    4--Dawson 5.2
    5--Williamson 4.4 or Coloccini 4.9

Sakho just thot about it now and also thot would be good. Agger lost the spot right to him and Pool decent fixtures...

u think Sakho better than Debuchy why??

    couple of quick fire questions:
    1) how did nasri play today? goal threat? his ICT threat index seems very high
    2) chances of silva being rested next gw?
    3) cabaye/lallana...seem decent options and have form but tough fixtures...was cabaye less attacking with barfa on the pitch?
