Having analysed the overall approaches in last night’s Wildcard Strategies article, we switch our attentions to the players. Looking at the likely targets for our possible shake-ups, we mainly focus on the upcoming 10 Gameweeks, with one eye also on the long-term. Goalkeepers kick us off, then, with rotation pairings the order of the day as we assess a variety of potential tactics across the price brackets:

David Marshall and Julian Speroni – Current Cost 9.2
Next 10 Gameweeks: WHM, STO, HUL, NOR, WBA, AVL, HUL, swa, FUL, sun

By partnering Cardiff and Palace, you are handed a run of eight favourable home games in the next 10, supplemented by trips to Swansea and Sunderland. If you’re focussing on the games in front of their own fans, the schedule from Gameweek 30 becomes less favourable though, with Liverpool and Chelsea (both twice) and City paying visit.

In terms of form, Palace have a respectable three clean sheets in the last five at Selhurst Park, though Cardiff have a single shut-out in front of their own fans over the same. In spite of their budget appeal, Marshall (4.7) is costlier than Ben Turner (4.2) for the Bluebirds, whilst Joel Ward (4.1) is cheaper than Speroni – doubling up on those defenders sets you back just 8.3.

David Marshall and Vito Mannone – Current Cost 9.1
Next 10 Gameweeks: WHM, SOU, STO, NOR, HUL, AVL, HUL, WBA, FUL, CPL

Cardiff and Sunderland offer a run of 10 straight home games, with only three fixtures (Hull twice and Southampton) against sides currently in the top half of the table. These two sides rotate home/away all the way up to Gameweek 36 and also produce home clashes with West Ham, Palace, Stoke, Cardiff and Swansea in five of the last eight Gameweeks.

Mannone only has two clean sheets in five now at the Stadium of Light but with Wes Brown now free from suspension, the Black Cats’ defensive potential looks set for an upturn. Indeed, Brown’s return hands us a dilemma – he’s cheaper than Mannone at 4.3 to 4.4 and has earned five bonus points in the two games he has produced a clean sheet. Phil Bardsley, at 4.5, offers a more attacking alternative and has notched against both City and Chelsea since Gus Poyet’s installation.

David Marshall and John Ruddy – Current Cost 9.6
Next 10 Gameweeks: WHM, HUL, NEW, NOR, (MCI/swa) AVL, HUL, avl, FUL, sot

Pairing Marshall with the Norwich stopper is a little more expensive. This duo is, however, first and second for saves over the first 20 Gameweeks with 81 and 71 apiece – boosting their appeal if they do concede. Such a combination would also hand us home games with Sunderland, Palace and Stoke over the last eight but the Canaries’ final four fixtures (LIV, mun, che, ARS) restrict their appeal considerably for the run-in. Ben Turner and Martin Olsson, at 4.2 apiece, would save as much as 1.4 if you are eying up a Cardiff/Norwich combination.

Tim Howard and Vito Mannone – Current Cost 10.3
Next 10 Gameweeks: NOR, SOT, STO, AVL, HUL, CPL, (che/ars), WHM, new, CAR

Further up the price scale, Mannone also affords a strong rotation partnership with Everton’s number one. This hands us eight home fixtures in 10, with Howard perhaps the safest best in Gameweek 27 away to Chelsea – four of his eight clean sheets have arrived on the road, including a visit to United.

Both rotate home/away from Gameweek 31 onwards but with such a schedule also taking in visits of Arsenal, Everton, United and City, there’s less potential in the latter part of the campaign. Nonetheless, this combo may appeal to those Seamus Coleman owners looking to double up on the Toffees backline.

Tim Howard and Julian Speroni – Current Cost 10.4
Next 10 Gameweeks: NOR, STO, HUL, AVL, WBA, CPL, MUN, WHM, SOU, CAR

Again, if you don’t mind rotating Howard at 5.9, he also works well with Palace’s number one. If you already have Coleman in defence, for example, and only plan on playing the Toffees stopper at Goodison to prevent from doubling up on the road, this duo alternates home/away all the way up to Gameweek 36. Over the next 10 fixtures, Palace’s home clash with United in Gameweek 27 is the one fly in the ointment is what look an otherwise eye-catching stretch of matches.

Jussi Jaaskelainen and Kelvin Davis / Artur Boruc – Current Cost 9.4 / 10.2
Next 10 Gameweeks: WBA, NEW, ARS, SWA, STO, NOR, SOU, LIV, HUL, NOR

According to our fixture ticker, Southampton and West Ham are first and second respectively for potential clean sheet returns over the next 10 league matches. Both sides rotate perfectly from Gameweek 21 right until the end of the season but the downside is that neither is displaying much resilience right now, with injuries to key players having a detrimental effect.

The Saints have a single clean sheet in 11, whilst the Hammers have delivered a pair of shut-outs in the previous 10 matches. Kelvin Davis has ousted Paolo Gazzaniga in Artur Boruc’s absence and sets you back just 3.9 right now but while the 4.7 priced Pole is undoubtedly his side’s first-choice, Mauricio Pochettino admitted only last week, there is “no timescale” on his return from a hand injury.

Jaaskelainen was replaced by Adrian in a couple of the recent festive fixtures but has quickly reclaimed the number one jersey for Big Sam’s side – given that his side don’t have a single fit centre-half right now, though, faith in the Hammers’ defensive prospects is at a real low. Elsewhere in their respective defences, a Razvan Rat/Nathaniel Clyne partnership would set you back just 8.9 – the latter continued his comeback from injury with a 45-minute run out against Chelsea yesterday.

Jussi Jaaskelainen and Gerhard Tremmel / Michel Vorm – Current Cost 9.9 / 10.4
Next 10 Gameweeks: car, NEW, FUL, SWA, CAR, NOR, SOU, CPL, HUL, WBA

A West Ham-Swansea offering would hand us a trip to Cardiff and nine home games in the next 10 Gameweeks. Again, though, injury may dictate matters here – Vorm is expected back from minor knee surgery before the end of January and has registered a clean sheet in each of his last three appearances at the Liberty. The Dutchman is down to 4.9 in price, whilst Ashley Williams is available for 4.8 for those eyeing up a potential defensive rotation partnership instead.

Wojciech Szczesny and Artur Boruc – Current Cost 10.6
Next 10 Gameweeks: avl, FUL, sot, CPL, STO, hul, SUN, sto, SWA, NOR

With more clean sheets and less goals conceded than any other side, installing the Gunners stopper between the sticks for the majority of his matches looks a viable option. Arguably, only three of the next 10 look problematic for Szczesny – Gameweek 25, 26 and 30, where he squares up to Liverpool, United and Spurs.

Ideally, then, we’re looking for a budget option to cover his back over that trio of fixtures. While Pochettino is reluctant to give a date for Boruc’s return, pencilling the Pole in for Gameweek 25 and playing his compatriot for the first four seems a reasonable assumption – Boruc would offer (STO, hul, NOR) over Szczesny’s tricky afore-mentioned matches.

Wojciech Szczesny and Michel Vorm – Current Cost 10.8
Next 10 Gameweeks: avl, FUL, sot, CPL, CAR, sto, SUN, sto, SWA, WBA

Similarly, Swansea offer a solution to Szczesny’s problematic fixtures. Once again, though, injury dictates how efficient this may be but, as mentioned, with Vorm expected back before the month is out, this partnership could work well. The Dutchman would afford a strong alternative to Arsenal’s three problem games in the next 10, with (CAR, sto, WBA) on his agenda compared to Szczesny’s (liv, MUN, tot).

David De Gea and Vito Mannone – Current Cost 10.2
Next 10 Gameweeks: SWA, SOU, CAR, sto, FUL, (ars/mci), cpl, WBA, wba, CPL

For those who feel United will hit their stride in the final few months and pick up in resilience, David Moyes’ side have six strong fixtures in the next 10 to benefit from. Mannone looks the best budget option to call upon for three of United’s four tricky fixtures – Gameweek 22, 28 and 30 (SOT, WBA, CPL) compared to (che, MCI, LIV), leaving just Gameweek 26 as problematic, with trips to Arsenal and City to choose from. Alternatively, a Jonny Evans/Wes Brown defensive combination would cost just 9.3.

Any thoughts on this WC team?

    Mannone/Marshall
Baines - Koscielny - Nastasic (Ward, Chester)
Walcott - Gerrard - Silva - Hazard (Januzaj)
    Lukaku - Suarez - Adebayor

When Aguero's back and starts to look dangerous, I'll upgrade one of Lukaku/Adebayor (depending on form) and downgrade one of my big midfielders to another cheapie.

So fckn annoying when this big freebie come around and all those with crappy teams can suddenly just change the their whole damn team. I find it pretty unfair to those who've played their hand right and put time and effort into their teams. One wildcard is enough! If your going to have two maybe make it half a wildcard. There's a guy languishing lower table in our mini-league who has more cash than me (i'm 2nd by 3 points in a cash league) and in theory could just create the same, or a better team in one fell swoop. How's that right?

Sorry, i'm sure this has all been said already, but yes, i'm a bitter.

    Rant over.

Meh. For me it should be more like the real thing. If you make poor transfers, play the wrong people, underestimate the opposition and start losing, you shouldn't just be able to just sack all your players and start again half-way through the season. Even if you're super rich like Man City or something.

I think i spelled it out pretty clearly in the original post. I built my team over time, made the right transfers at the right times and invested effort to make it work. It's a good team. One or more of my opponents will create an almost identical team in a week, for nothing. It's lame.

It sounds like he's been building cash value and you've been accruing points, which means you're better at getting points than he is. Wait until he copies his team and then strateically outdo him with superior instincts.

I suppose its FPLs way of trying to replicate the January transfer window so to speak. If your opponent has made poor choices over the 1st 19 weeks there's a good chance he will do the same going forward.

Aha I'm a bit sore too, didn't start the season too well but wasn't horrific either. Past month or so I've finally been gaining major ground and am just about to overtake my rivals but now they have a wc and no doubt will get in the majority of my team! Came at the worst time for me and the most opportune time for my rivals as most of their teams are now plagued with injuries (Giroud, Ramsey, Ozil) Bans (Silva, Debuchy) injured and dropped (Lampard)

Any manager trying to buy in the 'essential' names might find themselves having to make sacrifices elsewhere to get them in. I know I couldn't afford some of the players I have if I was only buying them now instead of when they where still cheap.

Anyone buying them now--and I include myself in this this--buys at such a premium that they're at their own sort of disadvantage, so the early birds still have the worm, if that makes any sense.

Who Got a Clean Sheet Against Who:

Here's something that fits in with this article. With plenty of fantasy football managers already activating their January wildcards and plenty more to come, I thought I'd share this with the rest of you.
It looks at who's kept a clean sheet against who, so we can separate the strong defensive teams from the ones who's stats are a bit misleading - the ones who have kept clean sheets against relatively easy opponents.

He has come back to life because his new manager has come up with the outlandish idea of actually playing him. Impossible to come to life when your previous manager decides playing him in the reserves was the best way forward.

I'd ditch Figueroa, tough fixture for Hull and you already have Chester. Best replacements would probably be Alcaraz or Burner. If you don't want to use a transfer on a small defensive change like that it makes sense though, great front seven.

Time to get rid of Nasri? Been very frustrating owning him of late, but his next 2 fixtures aren't bad (injury ravaged new defence and then a leaky Cardiff).

        Options:

        A) Save transfer and keep Nasri for the next 2 weeks
        B) Nasri -> Eriksen (cheaper and seemingly nailed on for 90 mins)
        C) Nasri -> Oscar (an alternative to Haz)

Same Zlat, but 2 question marks linger....

            1) will he continue to suffer some rotation?

            2) are the fixtures all that good? (hul, MUN, WHU). Hull fairly solid at home, then United. Meanwhile Nasri faces a new defence without Collo or Debuchy and then he's at home to a leaky Cardiff....

What is this nonsense everybody advocating playing WC later.

I beg ya pardon. I am playing this week and saving 2 FT for the midweek team news. I will use only 1 than probably and will have again 2 FT for GW 24. I can jump on any jan transfer if needed easily, I am doing major reconstruction on my team. Totally different approach. I will be bring differentials and redistribute the cash in midfield. Longer you wait they will be less differentials. What that important can happen in those 2 weeks I really don't understand. It is gonna be boring January. 1 - 2 players could be the potential bargains, exciting transfers. From experience it is not like 7-10 players suddenly emerge in January. 1 or 2 at most. I can bring them if needed.

And not even discussion price changes. #WilcardEarly 😉 Go wait, suit your self I will enjoy green 😛 😉

Spot on. I'm using the WC now to get in the big hitters. If somebody else comes in that sets fire to the league, its easy enough to swap a Walcott/Yaya/Hazard/Rooney out for them with 1 FT.

Depends on your team and how badly you need to restructure. Lots of folks wouldn't know what to do with a WC now, except maybe tweak their 4th and 5th defenders.

Just a little thing - it sounds like you want to save a FT and have 2 FTs after your wildcard? You can't do that. If you WC with 2 FTs, you lose one of them. You'll only have one for the next week. Sorry if I've misunderstood your plan.

In general I agree, but what about any new injuries (we've had loads recently), players coming off of injuries putting others out of the game, players being sold etc, wait as long as you can wait before the team you want is unobtainable then pull the trigger I say.

With 2 FT I can do what ever I want. If I want Kun I am just 2 FT from. I love my team so gonna go with it. I like to do 16 or 20pt hit whenever I go to the transfer page. I say use the opportunity,.

I understand different opinions really, but everybody pro late WC (this site too) it is crazy for me. no one pro early WC?

Good point but the point of wildcarding late is not because of the signings. As you said if there's a major one you can just bring him in via 2 FTs or even a hit.

Thing is current team is template and not broken (yet). That MAY or MAY NOT change within 2 weeks.

Differentials is brought into NOW before we WC. If they fail, it'll be reconsidered as short term punts and will be fixed by WC.

Not too mention players coming back from injuries soon which implies the changed template even further. Aguero Boruc RVP even Reid to name a few.

Although I agree on the price changes. You do get players with a better price now - something that we late WCers might not be able to get or able but at a premium price. However the 'good' players now might not necesarrily be a good player then.

Cheapie combos look great now, but come march/april a few will have given up hope/conceding in a push for goals. Hull and Southampton look like they'll both be playing sensibly for the time being, if this carries on GW24 this looks like a good combo.

Poyet seemed a bit distressed in the post match interview, Im not sure we can rely enough on Mannone's save points if cleanies dried up..

Currently have Cabaye. Thinking about an Eriksen punt pre-WC. Fixtures aren’t fantastic though. Lallana also an option maybe.

          Way I see their fixtures.

          Cabaye:
MCI – tough on paper, but Swansea just scored 2 and they’ve leaked a few away from home. Arsenal recently kept the Geordies out though. Can’t see them scoring more than 1 really
whm - West Ham pretty tight at home + Sam should have some defenders back by then. Can’t see Newc scoring more than 1 again
nor –again tight at home, but a bit unpredictable. Decent fixture.
SUN – good fixture but Wearside derby so anything could happen. Expect to be high scoring.

Total goals predicted: 6. Cabaye involved in 25.9% of NEWC goals this season when he’s played. So 1.8 for Cabaye.

          Eriksen:
CPL – Sherwood brought in on ‘exciting football’ ticket. CPL have tightened up but can see Spurs scoring 2/3.
swa – don’t think this will be that high scoring. Maybe 2 for Spurs though.
MCI – As with Newcastle but again ‘Sherwood effect’ should mean different outcome to AVB low scorers
Hul – tight-ish at home but expect them to concede 1.

Total goals predicted: 8. Eriksen involved in 30.8% of TOT goals this season when he’s played. So 2.46 for him

          Lallana:
WBA- good fixture. Can see Sot scoring 2/3
sun – ok fixture, but Poyet tightened up at home. Maybe 1 or 2 for s’ton
ARS – tough fixture given Arsenal’s defensive form this season.
ful – decent fixture but can’t see it being that high scoring.

Total goals predicted: 8. Lallana involved in 34.8% of SOT goals this season when he’s played. So 2.78 for him

Hmmm. Hasn’t quite catapulted Eriksen to the top as I’d hoped….

As a non owner of these 3 players, I think you underestimate Newcastle a wee bit and overestimate the other two. Probably because you're trying to tell yourself that Cabaye to Eriksen / Lallana is a good move.

I think it is a good move but it's closer than you think.

😆 Some woman (Mystical Veg) who throws asparagus up in the air and reads the pattern it takes to predict the future has bestowed upon us her vision for 2014:

          1) A pop group will spilt up
          2) There will be more strife in the middlle east
          3) England will flounder at the world cup

I know lads, I know. I needed to sit down too. It's like the reincarnation of Nostradmus.

Totally agree, does a hell of a lot of tireless work up front, weighs in with assists, has played practically every game to date without complaining, so many Gunners fans mock him. I assure you the will soon be praying for him to be fit again. He may miss, some not the easy finishes people automatically shout from the roof tops when examined properly. It's a thing on here, Giroud misses a chance, its followed by the hoards of typical Giroud responses. His header to win a vital game against Newcastle was excellent.

I don't think he will, mate. I'll talk to you about him instead. I got him because I love his play and it looked like he and Vert would be AVB's favourites. I figured when Rose was back, they'd be rock solid defensively. He has goals in his locker too - see his goal against Fulham.

Now that Tim is in charge, I'll probably reluctantly move him on with the WC. Spurs don't look like keeping many cleanies with this system and Tim may even prefer Dawson-Vert when Vert's fit.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Consider the nature of Tim aswell, 'Arry Redknapp-esque, wants open expansive football which will lead to loss of CS and also I doubt he will drop his English captain Dawson, Vert will also be nailed on so unfortunately for Vladdy 3 don't fit into 2

Winter break and they are playing football in Doha. Absurd

A winter break is just an opportunity for the bigger clubs to make money and another attempt to establish the club in other continents

Money talks. Get used to this. We'll see non-competitive games in the Middle East and China - during mini-breaks - at lot more in the future, all to the detriment of the game.
