Arsenal have this evening confirmed Theo Walcott has been sidelined for the rest of the season with a knee injury sustained in Saturday evening’s cup clash with Tottenham.

The winger was stretchered off towards the end of the 2-0 win and underwent scans on the problem earlier today. The Gunners issued the following update on their official website:

“After coming off injured in Saturday’s 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur, the Club regrettably announces that Theo Walcott has sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee. Theo will have surgery in London in the near future and is expected to be out for at least six months, therefore missing the remainder of the season and the World Cup in Brazil in the summer. Everyone at Arsenal wishes Theo a speedy recovery and we look forward to seeing him back on a football pitch as soon as possible.”

The news is a massive blow to Arsenal’s title aspirations and Fantasy managers alike. Ironically, Walcott’s Fantasy potential looked to have stepped up a notch at the weekend, too – Arsene Wenger chose to field him as the lone striker in the north London derby, with Olivier Giroud sidelined through illness and Nicklas Bendtner out with an ankle injury.

Having returned from abdominal surgery in late November, Walcott was tentatively eased back into the first-team and produced a pair of assists over four sub appearances. From Gameweek 16 onwards, though, he racked up 47 points over just five starts, with doubles against City and West Ham followed by an assist against Newcastle and goal at home to Cardiff.

The bandwagon was at full pace, with almost 120,000 FPL managers snapping up his services prior to the last two deadlines, as Walcott’s price leapt from 9.1 to 9.6. Indeed, over 50,000 have already transferred the winger in this week alone.

From a Fantasy perspective, today’s news may even prove the tipping point for those who have so far resisted the temptation of playing the winter wildcard early. Walcott’s absence will have a significant effect on many a Fantasy plan, forcing us back to the drawing board for yet another revision.

With games against Villa, Fulham, Southampton and Palace in the next four, Arsenal’s upcoming schedule bodes well for Fantasy returns and is likely to see many turn to Mesut Ozil, with Santi Cazorla also a potential target until Aaron Ramsey returns from a thigh injury. The German has plummeted in price from 10.8 down to 9.9 yet has averaged an impressive 6.3 points per game – joint-top for midfielders – and looks the prime target for current Walcott owners looking to take advantage of those fixtures.

Alternatively, for those unwilling to opt for Yaya Toure as a route into City’s goal potential, now may be the time to turn to David Silva. The pair have mirrored Ozil’s 6.3 ppg but the Spaniard, with an ownership of just 5% and price of 9.3 to his team-mate’s 10.1, may well be the ideal trade.

          yeah me too. It's the arsenal way. Go down with slight knock, FIVE MONTHS OUT.

      Gnabry is no way guaranteed to be included imo. He deserves more opportunities but I wouldn't transfer him in until he gets some more game time. He's barely played at all but has been good when he's played thats for sure.

      Personally don't love it because Wenger could still go with some combination of Rosicky/Wilshere/Ozil/Podolski and leave Gnabry out. Plus, he takes up an Arsenal slot and I'm planning on doubling up on the defense and going with one of Santi/Ozil. Giroud is also still a viable fantasy option, especially if Arsenal don't buy another striker.

    Theo has only played in nine games with 70+ minutes, two of those nine games we lost verses Villa and City.

    The only game we lost with him not in the squad was vs United, and even then we lost mostly due to bad luck and not taking our chances when we had them verses what was a very poor United side, his pace and position wasn't what we were missing.

    Games where Theo played less than 75 minutes or not at all.
    8 games won, 2 draws and 1 loss.
    The 63 minutes over 4 games where he did appear the score lines and impact are below result in a total of 10 points.
    SOU(H), 2-0, 21 minutes, 1 point
    CAR(A) 3-0, 1 minutes, 5 points (assist Ramsey 90' minute 3rd goal, game already won)
    HUL(H), 2-0, 18 minutes, 1 point
    EVE(H), 1-1, 23 minutes, 4 points (came on has a sub to assist Ozil 90' minute goal, Everton equalised 4 minutes later)

    This is more to justify the fact that without Wally Arsenal had pretty much managed 8 games won, (I won't include the Cardiff game has it was already 2-0 and in 90 minutes plus extra time when the goal was scored) the only time he made an impact not being on the pitch from the start was the Everton game.

    -------
    I'll stop rambling, but in short, 8 games won, 1 draw, 1 loss without Theo. 6 games won, 2 draws and 2 losses with Theo.
    Ozil is back now, Ramsey is back within a week and they were Arsenal main points from midfield while Walcott was away, not to mention Santi is starting to find his feet again.
    -------

    Ozil best bet for walcott as its a coin toss and he will get you more value before your wildcard. Basically only extra team value in it 😀

    player i never wanted in my team (Ozil) find his way into my team now

    how 1 injury can change everything

    likely to keep him some time as well

    if Wilshire do something good over next 3 i might keep him as well

    0.1 off Walcott -> Ozil.

    Is Cazorla a decent option or should I go Silva and forego any Arsenal attackers?

      Barkley only because Sterling is bound to lose game time soon with Sturridge coming back. If he was still gonna be nailed on Sterling by a mile. Barkley is shit for fantasy I'm trying to get rid of him myself

    Lucky to have 2FT with the recent news. Just need to figure out how to best utilize them.
    Have Walcott, Rooney, Cabaye and Krul (as my only keeper).

    I think Walcott -> Özil looks good, so my other transfer needs to raise funds.

    Which one?
    A) Krul -> Mannone
    B) Rooney -> JRod

    Will ship Walcott with my FT.

    Clyne and Whitt will play should cabaye and Rooney not feature
