Scout Report – Clint Dempsey

Rene Meulensteen’s first move of the winter transfer window was to bring a familiar face back to the Premier League. The Fulham boss snapped up former Cottagers favourite Clint Dempsey on a two-month loan deal from MLS side Seattle Sounders as he looks to add some top-flight experience to boost his side’s battle against the drop.

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Dempsey was delighted to be back after leaving under somewhat acrimonious circumstances back in August 2012. With the MLS currently in off-season, he is keen to use the time in London to improve his form ahead of the upcoming World Cup:

“It feels good to be back. This (Fulham) has always seemed like my home in Europe and I am excited to be back and be part of this team and play in this league. I wanted to get back to playing at the highest level and getting back and helping the team in the situation where they are not where they want to be in the table. But going into a World Cup year you want to get into that top form and carry that forward so hopefully I can have a good showing.”

The History

Dempsey’s career kicked off in his native America back in 2004 with New England Revolution. The midfielder spent three seasons at the club, producing 25 goals and 13 assists over 71 appearances – he also helped his side reach the MLS Final twice before being snapped up by Fulham in the January 2007 transfer window.

Over five-and-a-half seasons at Craven Cottage, Dempsey was a slow starter but eventually developed into one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. The first few years produced 21 goals and seven assists from 110 league games before Dempsey’s attacking sensibilities stepped up another level, with 29 strikes and 11 assists from 74 matches. Indeed, his final year at the Cottage saw Dempsey end the season as the top scoring midfielder in the FPL game, with 17 goals, seven assists and 22 bonus points underlining his displays.

Snapped up by Tottenham prior to the end of the 2012 summer transfer window, Dempsey’s Fantasy potential all but dried up. He started just 22 league games under Andre Villas-Boas, scoring seven times and delivering six assists in his only season at White Hart Lane before returning to the US in August last year. Yet to flourish at Seattle, though, he’s produced just one goal and a single assist over 12 matches, including league and play-off games. At international level, Dempsey has served up 36 goals in 101 appearances for the US.

The Prospects

Having failed to gain clearance in time for the New Year’s Day win over West Ham, Dempsey made his debut during last weekend’s FA Cup draw at Norwich. The two month period will therefore afford him seven league fixtures in which make an impact (SUN, ars, swa, SOU, mun, LIV, wba), with some Fantasy managers even considering him for the armband this Saturday as Sunderland pay visit to the Cottage.

In terms of game time, Dempsey seems a likely starter as Meulensteen looks for his top-flight know-how to make a difference in the opposition box. Given that only one Fulham attacking midfielder – Pajtim Kasami – has scored more than once this season, it’s obvious the Cottagers are in desperate need of firepower in the final third of the pitch.

Meulensteen started with Kieran Richardson, Adel Taarabt and Damien Duff behind Dimitar Berbatov in a 4-2-3-1 against the Hammers and it looks odds on that Dempsey will replace Richardson on the left, with his manager going on to say:

“Clint has spent so many years playing in the Premier League. We know where his strengths lie whether it is coming in from the left or playing as a deeper striker or a number nine depending on who you are playing against. The most important thing is that he will be a good boost for us.”

Given that Kasami – who currently sits in 5% of FPL sides – is the most owned Fulham midfielder (or attacker), Dempsey’s arrival won’t have a knock-on effect on any popular Fantasy assets. Instead, he offers the option of a short-term flutter for those Fantasy managers who reckon the 30-year old can quickly reach full match fitness and reproduce the form of years gone by.

Despite their 6-0 mauling at Hull in Gameweek 19, the Cottagers have notched twice in three of their last four, suggesting an upturn in attacking displays under Meulensteen. Whilst the upcoming games against Arsenal, United and Liverpool may prove tricky, Dempsey could easily produce the goods in the other four fixtures across his remaining schedule and, at 7.4 in FPL (7.7 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team,), his top-flight history suggests that, despite his patchy form since leaving Spurs, we’d be foolish to write him off completely.

      I think Rooney will play.

If you can therefore use your FT to draft in a stronger DEF, or perhaps even find a justifiable -4, then maybe you can avoid the WC.......but it's a close one.

I wouldn't have said that Mannone and McGregor rotate very well at all. Try Mannone-Marshall.

2m in the bank won't buy Aguero. He's probably back so soon that it's worth being able to get him in one transfer.

Getting Santi over Ozil would solve a big problem for me.

Santi has done very little, FPL-wise, so far this season but his shooting stats are on the up lately (and streets ahead of Özil's) and he scored in the cup. He could be about to start scoring again.

I know that some folk are punting on Santi for a few weeks until they WC but I've already succumbed to the tempting button and I need a long term choice. Can Santi be that man?

Yes you are right. He was even benched at a stage when Walcott was still unfit. Ramsey. Wilshire and Ozil played ahead of him.

Granted with his form he won't be dropped now. But if he does revert to the wing and fails to produce, don't be surprised to see him rotated quite often.

I'm on my WC too and Santi was the first player I transferred in. Some people on here rely too much on recent FPL points scored when claiming a player is a good pick or not. For those that watch games it's clear to see he is improving a lot and look like he could start racking up the goals/points.

Ozil is a steady pick but IMO Santi is worth the risk as I feel he could go on a good run soon with the way he is playing.

I have him captain this week.

Walcott fallout has benefitted a few midfielders prices but there's a number of replacement options, so these have diluted the transfers in. I would still expect Oscar, Eriksen and Ozil to get double rises this week (Erik and Oscar have already had one of those) - and maybe Haz, Silva and perhaps Yaya, Cazorla will benefit on Friday. Don't think it's been a bumper WC week, however. Smarty Pants analysis shows 12% of the top 1k have Wildcarded - I expected this to be higher.

If I have to watch Antonio Valencia receive the ball, realise he is not good enough to beat his man unless he is already running at pace, and so check back and send the ball back to whence it came I will stick red hot pins in my eyes.

He must've had 4 or 5 occasions when he was 1 on 1 with Alonso, and failed to do ANYTHING. Seriously, what is the point. We may as well stick Zaha in there and see if he can make something happen.

Imagine the likes of Ozil, Hazard, Coutinho, Ribery etc.....getting into that 1 on 1 position vs a fullback, they are comfortable going round him either way, and that is what United are missing........along with a better central midfielder of course.

    Mini rant over.

Agreed. He is one of the most overrated players this season. Was shocked and appalled to see Moyes say he'd been one of our best of the season a few weeks ago, just after yet another game when he had twice as much of the ball as Janu and did half as much with it.

It looks like the template defence which is
      1 Coleman / Baines
      2 mert / kos
      3 some variation
      4 Chester
      5 ward
Occasionally terry slots in for 1 or 2
Marshall + mannone also the most common go pairing for those wanting rotating cheap use

      So it's fine

Does anyone know when the flag colour will change on boruc? And do you know if his price will drop because of it?

it might as the threshold for red flagged players is higher so if it becomes yellow flagged he might drop. at least that what happened to 2-3 occasions that i monitored in the past

The Ox's flag changed from red to yellow yesterday, and his price fell this morning. So perhaps the price protection for Boruc and the Ox will only kick in when their flags turn green.

How likely is Sturridge going to take points off Suarez? Im not sure what their stats were prior to Sturridge's injury...

Not enough to change any decisions about having him in your team (yes you do unless you have ethics not to) and captain him (yes you do at home and also away unless another stand-out option has great fixture and you want to differentiate)

Nice to see Ozil not rise yet, means a slew of transfers all day today making him less likely to rise again in the week.

I suspect it makes no difference. He'll still have a big influx of transfers on Friday so I suspect he'll go up for the second time on Friday night - which I feel he would have done regardless of whether he went up last night or not.

Dont like the fact that Walcott and Caz are priced same.

An 8.5M Cazorla would be more tempting.

He was over priced start of the season for sure, should be below 9m. The fpl secret pricing society could not have predicted arsenal actually splashing the cash and ozil stealing his thunder though

On my WC at the minute, and lost what to do.

    McGregor - Speroni
    Gabbidon - Kos - Azpil - Coleman - Chester
    Hazard - JWP - Yaya - Eriksen - Puncheon
    JRod - Lukaku - Suarez

I have 3.1 in the bank, so my options are
    a) Downgrade puncheon to a 4.5 and keep the 3.5 I need for Lukaku > Aguero when he's back.
    b) Puncheon > Lallana and Lukaku > Sturridge
    c) Upgrade a defender and Puncheon both, Lukaku > Adebayor or Lukaku > Remy if I need funds.

    Thoughts?
    Thanks
