Rene Meulensteen’s first move of the winter transfer window was to bring a familiar face back to the Premier League. The Fulham boss snapped up former Cottagers favourite Clint Dempsey on a two-month loan deal from MLS side Seattle Sounders as he looks to add some top-flight experience to boost his side’s battle against the drop.

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Dempsey was delighted to be back after leaving under somewhat acrimonious circumstances back in August 2012. With the MLS currently in off-season, he is keen to use the time in London to improve his form ahead of the upcoming World Cup:

“It feels good to be back. This (Fulham) has always seemed like my home in Europe and I am excited to be back and be part of this team and play in this league. I wanted to get back to playing at the highest level and getting back and helping the team in the situation where they are not where they want to be in the table. But going into a World Cup year you want to get into that top form and carry that forward so hopefully I can have a good showing.”

The History

Dempsey’s career kicked off in his native America back in 2004 with New England Revolution. The midfielder spent three seasons at the club, producing 25 goals and 13 assists over 71 appearances – he also helped his side reach the MLS Final twice before being snapped up by Fulham in the January 2007 transfer window.

Over five-and-a-half seasons at Craven Cottage, Dempsey was a slow starter but eventually developed into one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. The first few years produced 21 goals and seven assists from 110 league games before Dempsey’s attacking sensibilities stepped up another level, with 29 strikes and 11 assists from 74 matches. Indeed, his final year at the Cottage saw Dempsey end the season as the top scoring midfielder in the FPL game, with 17 goals, seven assists and 22 bonus points underlining his displays.

Snapped up by Tottenham prior to the end of the 2012 summer transfer window, Dempsey’s Fantasy potential all but dried up. He started just 22 league games under Andre Villas-Boas, scoring seven times and delivering six assists in his only season at White Hart Lane before returning to the US in August last year. Yet to flourish at Seattle, though, he’s produced just one goal and a single assist over 12 matches, including league and play-off games. At international level, Dempsey has served up 36 goals in 101 appearances for the US.

The Prospects

Having failed to gain clearance in time for the New Year’s Day win over West Ham, Dempsey made his debut during last weekend’s FA Cup draw at Norwich. The two month period will therefore afford him seven league fixtures in which make an impact (SUN, ars, swa, SOU, mun, LIV, wba), with some Fantasy managers even considering him for the armband this Saturday as Sunderland pay visit to the Cottage.

In terms of game time, Dempsey seems a likely starter as Meulensteen looks for his top-flight know-how to make a difference in the opposition box. Given that only one Fulham attacking midfielder – Pajtim Kasami – has scored more than once this season, it’s obvious the Cottagers are in desperate need of firepower in the final third of the pitch.

Meulensteen started with Kieran Richardson, Adel Taarabt and Damien Duff behind Dimitar Berbatov in a 4-2-3-1 against the Hammers and it looks odds on that Dempsey will replace Richardson on the left, with his manager going on to say:

“Clint has spent so many years playing in the Premier League. We know where his strengths lie whether it is coming in from the left or playing as a deeper striker or a number nine depending on who you are playing against. The most important thing is that he will be a good boost for us.”

Given that Kasami – who currently sits in 5% of FPL sides – is the most owned Fulham midfielder (or attacker), Dempsey’s arrival won’t have a knock-on effect on any popular Fantasy assets. Instead, he offers the option of a short-term flutter for those Fantasy managers who reckon the 30-year old can quickly reach full match fitness and reproduce the form of years gone by.

Despite their 6-0 mauling at Hull in Gameweek 19, the Cottagers have notched twice in three of their last four, suggesting an upturn in attacking displays under Meulensteen. Whilst the upcoming games against Arsenal, United and Liverpool may prove tricky, Dempsey could easily produce the goods in the other four fixtures across his remaining schedule and, at 7.4 in FPL (7.7 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team,), his top-flight history suggests that, despite his patchy form since leaving Spurs, we’d be foolish to write him off completely.

Ah, nice to hear an opposite opinion!

Would take a hit to make another transfer, and not enough to do wally > Ozil

        So

        Wally > Gerrard/Oscar (-4)

        Wally & Roo > Ozil & Lukaku (-8)

Have been reading the past 10 pages or so looking for discussions on Ozil vs Cazorla. Now the big plus in Ozil's favour, and probably the main factor, is his PPG, which is almost double that of Cazorla. However, Cazorla is still tempting me due to this:

    - He's played 90 minutes in the last 3 games - the first time this season (don't know whether form or injury has prevented this earlier in the season)

    - His OPTA stats - compare Ozil's last 6 matches with Cazorla - Ozil has had 7 shots to Cazorla's 22 (1 shot a game vs 3 shots a game)

    - Ozil creates more chances for his team mates but with every other fantasy player this is considered secondary to goal threat. Why not with Cazorla vs Ozil.

It's a really tricky one. If I thought Cazorla was coming into form, I'd take him in a heartbeat. Finance isn't a problem and I'm not using my WC so the decision isn't irreversible.

The other point is that Wenger has options on the left (Podolski, Wilshere). With Walcott out, I don't think he will start Gnabry just yet, and Ramsey is probably still a week or two away. Surely, that means Ozil will start out wide, Cazorla maybe middle and Podolski or Rosicky on the left?

I am fan of Cazorla and have him in my team atm. The problem is that he played in no 10 role when he got that marvelous stats and ICT index. With Ozil back he will be back on the wing where he has competition and his stats in that place aren't that good. Last year he got great pts but he played in no 10. Now is Ozil is "in the hole".

      Cheers.

Ozil won't be shifted out wide, Wenger preferred to move Ramsey in the form of his life out there last time Walcott was injured.

It'll be Gnabry, Rosicky or Wilshere on the right, with Cazorla left and Ozil CAM. Podolski to get some gametime for Caz at some stage too, Rosicky or Wilshere could also play from the left.

So basically I'm saying Caz won't start every game, rules him out for me. Now personally I'm not getting Ozil either, for the reasons you say, lack of goal threat but I can see why people have done.

Ramsey when fit for me I think.

Yep, pretty sure it'll be Cazorla - Ozil - Ramsey once Ramsey is back, and that puts Cazorla at risk of rotation with Podolski / Rosicky as you say.

Guess I'm just not totally convinced Ozil will play centrally in the short term, and if he does whether he carries enough goal threat. He's even averaging less than 1 shot a game away from home ... something like a chance every 120 minutes! For 10m?

I don't know arsenal well enough to be an authority, but Arteta knows how to play in the middle and get forward (remember his Everton days when he was an FPL value). OxladeChamberlain is on the way back but still playing with under21's.

      >If I thought Cazorla was coming into form, I'd take him in a heartbeat.
in the members section, compare Cazorla with himself... entire season vs. past 4 weeks. there's something to it. I don't think Cazorla is great value, but he is a nice punty differential with a lot of upside if it pays off. See 2012 stats.

Ozil is better value, and youll catch at least 2 price rises before gw21 starts

Compare Ozil over the season with Cazorla recent form and Ozil still has the edge. Plus Ozil is nailed on and in the hole as Daniel points out.
Caz is the more exciting and differential pick and of course could well work out, he is certainly "due" a big score based on his recent stats and we all loved him as a player last season (admittedly playing in the hole where he could run the game but not quite as well as ozil does it).
Caz does like a long range effort more than ozil as well, ozil is more likely to land it on someone else's foot with an open goal 5 yards out for the assist.
I went Ozil but I am slightly disappointed in my safe choice

Yep, all good points. Out of interest, when you say compare Ozil with Cazorla, what stats are you comparing?

Don't know why I do this to myself... I've never been one to follow the flock and I don't want to make a bad call just by being perverse!

I used member comparison tool and compared ozil season average against Cazorla last 6 weeks, 4 weeks, 2 weeks

Ozil season edges against Caz last 6 weeks
Caz last 4 weeks wins against ozil season
Ozil season edges against Caz last 2 weeks

Caz does have a little more goal threat across the whole period but generally much less creativity, except against the previous 4 weeks, so Caz must have had a great game 3/4 weeks ago.

In the end Caz recent performance probably won't be indicative of his future performance because Ozil will reclaim the role in the hole

I like the Giroud pick a lot. He gets a lot of crap because he's not Suarez or Aguero, but until Arsenal get another striker he's a great option. Having said that, I've fallen head over heels for the Adebayor bandwagon.

Cheers. Boruc said that he is fit 2 weeks now but waiting from the manager to call him . We are waiting Davis mistake or so in order Boruc to get chance. He made several mistakes before the injury. Looks like everyone are forgetting that.

    Marshall

    Zaba, Clyne, Kosc

    Hazard, Eriksen, Silva, Lallana, Ozil

    JRod, Suarez

    Bench is Chester,Ward and Aguero

Now i have figured i can chop and change my def for a few weeks and go with that 5 in mid for the future until Aguero comes back and his price sky-rockets.. i think its a strong mid that could help until he gets back.. is it ok???

I was fine coping with my 1 FT and just benching a couple of players until Walcott news came through. Brought in Ozil for a hit, but might end up wildcarding in the next few days

Walcott Cabaye and Rooney, already done cabaye to lallana for FT...

          Now very tempting to WC!!

          Current Team:

          Mannone, ( 4.0 )
Gabbidon, Kos, Coleman ( Baker, Collins )
Silva, Hazard, Lallana, Sterling ( Walcott )
          Suarez, Rooney, JRod

Should I WC now to have this team?

          Marshall, ( Mannone )
Burner, Kos, Coleman ( Gabbidon, Chester )
Hazard, Gerrard, Silva, Ozil ( Puncheon )
          Suarez, Lukaku, JRod

Or could take (-8) for Wally and Rooney > Lukaku and Cazorla/Ozil

Ok lads have had to WC due to a number of injured/out of favour players. Struggling here and help is appreciated.
          Cech, Davis,
          Coleman, Kosc, Clyne, Chester, Ward.
          Haz, Ozil, Lallana, Mutch, Ibe,
Suarez, Aguero (Or temp Replacement), Lukaku.

My Selling value is pretty awful and is pretty clear with that midfield. Any suggestions? Thanks in adcance.

            Go into Transfers/Midfielders/transfers in/£5.4 limit

There are some very decent options. Sorry I can't list them all. A couple around the 5.0 level should help sort your budget.

              Silva Hazard Walcott Janu Sterling

Come on bro it's easy. Barkley home to Norwich, Hull at home don't concede many and Chelsea don't light it up away from home. That game could be 0-0 or 1-0 well into the 2nd half. This is of course a complete guess and most likely a pile of donkeys dung but in any case, don't wildcard 🙂

I'm hoping it's another one of those Koscielny "oh look, here are all these 2,000 transfers we didn't count until the final ten seconds" deals.

Or he doesn't go up and then they find them ten minutes later.

I'm thinking your scenario is more likely. All those wastes NTIs tomorrow...

              Further thoughts anyone??

              Current Team:

              Mannone, ( 4.0 )
Gabbidon, Kos, Coleman ( Baker, Collins )
Silva, Hazard, Lallana, Sterling ( Walcott )
              Suarez, Rooney, JRod

              Wally > Gerrard/Oscar (-4)

              Wally & Roo > Ozil & Lukaku (-8)

              OR....

Should I WC now to have this team?

              Marshall, ( Mannone )
Burner, Kos, Coleman ( Gabbidon, Chester )
Hazard, Gerrard, Silva, Ozil ( Puncheon )
              Suarez, Lukaku, JRod

Will save transfers for a week, to downgrade a mid and upgrade to aguero when fit.

Look good to go for this week?

Take that - 8 depending on your rank and your guts.

                  I like this!!

I am about 450k, behind in some MLs, still in the cup against a strong team, I know others in my MLs that have used WC!

You may have just pushed me to make a very very bold move!

                  What would you do?

Don't bank on aguero for Cardiff. With those u mention I possibly would and have someone like Ade/ giroud until kun is back.

#Rooney has failed to shake off a groin injury for #MUFC Capital One Cup semi-final first leg tie at #SAFC

              https://twitter.com/physioroom/status/420637653793402880

Not rested, just hasn't recovered. Physio room also reckons he needs another 7-10 day recovery but moyes could risk him

RVP expected to be back in the squad

Even a 50% fit Rooney has got to play now.

Generally sick of the uncertainty around man u team news I may just avoid players from now on. Their not exactly setting alight either. Injuries have been very key though.

Aguero can't get back soon enough, save us the constant stream of Rooney BS coming out of United HQ...
