Rene Meulensteen’s first move of the winter transfer window was to bring a familiar face back to the Premier League. The Fulham boss snapped up former Cottagers favourite Clint Dempsey on a two-month loan deal from MLS side Seattle Sounders as he looks to add some top-flight experience to boost his side’s battle against the drop.

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Dempsey was delighted to be back after leaving under somewhat acrimonious circumstances back in August 2012. With the MLS currently in off-season, he is keen to use the time in London to improve his form ahead of the upcoming World Cup:

“It feels good to be back. This (Fulham) has always seemed like my home in Europe and I am excited to be back and be part of this team and play in this league. I wanted to get back to playing at the highest level and getting back and helping the team in the situation where they are not where they want to be in the table. But going into a World Cup year you want to get into that top form and carry that forward so hopefully I can have a good showing.”

The History

Dempsey’s career kicked off in his native America back in 2004 with New England Revolution. The midfielder spent three seasons at the club, producing 25 goals and 13 assists over 71 appearances – he also helped his side reach the MLS Final twice before being snapped up by Fulham in the January 2007 transfer window.

Over five-and-a-half seasons at Craven Cottage, Dempsey was a slow starter but eventually developed into one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. The first few years produced 21 goals and seven assists from 110 league games before Dempsey’s attacking sensibilities stepped up another level, with 29 strikes and 11 assists from 74 matches. Indeed, his final year at the Cottage saw Dempsey end the season as the top scoring midfielder in the FPL game, with 17 goals, seven assists and 22 bonus points underlining his displays.

Snapped up by Tottenham prior to the end of the 2012 summer transfer window, Dempsey’s Fantasy potential all but dried up. He started just 22 league games under Andre Villas-Boas, scoring seven times and delivering six assists in his only season at White Hart Lane before returning to the US in August last year. Yet to flourish at Seattle, though, he’s produced just one goal and a single assist over 12 matches, including league and play-off games. At international level, Dempsey has served up 36 goals in 101 appearances for the US.

The Prospects

Having failed to gain clearance in time for the New Year’s Day win over West Ham, Dempsey made his debut during last weekend’s FA Cup draw at Norwich. The two month period will therefore afford him seven league fixtures in which make an impact (SUN, ars, swa, SOU, mun, LIV, wba), with some Fantasy managers even considering him for the armband this Saturday as Sunderland pay visit to the Cottage.

In terms of game time, Dempsey seems a likely starter as Meulensteen looks for his top-flight know-how to make a difference in the opposition box. Given that only one Fulham attacking midfielder – Pajtim Kasami – has scored more than once this season, it’s obvious the Cottagers are in desperate need of firepower in the final third of the pitch.

Meulensteen started with Kieran Richardson, Adel Taarabt and Damien Duff behind Dimitar Berbatov in a 4-2-3-1 against the Hammers and it looks odds on that Dempsey will replace Richardson on the left, with his manager going on to say:

“Clint has spent so many years playing in the Premier League. We know where his strengths lie whether it is coming in from the left or playing as a deeper striker or a number nine depending on who you are playing against. The most important thing is that he will be a good boost for us.”

Given that Kasami – who currently sits in 5% of FPL sides – is the most owned Fulham midfielder (or attacker), Dempsey’s arrival won’t have a knock-on effect on any popular Fantasy assets. Instead, he offers the option of a short-term flutter for those Fantasy managers who reckon the 30-year old can quickly reach full match fitness and reproduce the form of years gone by.

Despite their 6-0 mauling at Hull in Gameweek 19, the Cottagers have notched twice in three of their last four, suggesting an upturn in attacking displays under Meulensteen. Whilst the upcoming games against Arsenal, United and Liverpool may prove tricky, Dempsey could easily produce the goods in the other four fixtures across his remaining schedule and, at 7.4 in FPL (7.7 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team,), his top-flight history suggests that, despite his patchy form since leaving Spurs, we’d be foolish to write him off completely.

Apparently, according to David Moyes' clause, it will cost United 27.5mil to sack him.

About the same Fellaini costed over the summer.

They won't sack him until the end of next season.

Agree he shouldn't have been appointed without an interview to cover the tricky questions to which he clearly has no answers but there's no point in sacking him now.

Prefer a 3-4-3 just based on pass point turn out though Baines can be a 4th midfielder.

2 arsenal and 2 everton is a bit risky but if their season form shows anything could be a good move.

Don't much care for Couthino good stats but doesn't produce points - would prefer Hazard or even Gerrard.

      Dzeko??

Team looks ok. If you Arsenal and Everton keep clean sheets you could be laughing. If they don't you'll probably be crying.

I don't think any of them will.

Moyes will be given next season and the right players will not be available in Jan so the big moves need to come in the summer.

The risk is that they will not want to come without champions league football and Moyes doesn't have a strong reputation to attract the quality of players needed but Barca survived a year without CL so it can be done.

    Rooney an injury doubt
Sterling a doubt to start (Sturridge nearing fitness)
Ward & MOlsson both having bad fixtures

    Would you:

    A) Stick and hope Rooney plays
    B) Rooney -> JRod [4 points] - leaves enough cash for Sterling -> Hazard next week
    C) Rooney -> Negredo [4 points] - decent couple of fixtures up to the WC, when I will get Kun
    D) Rooney -> Giroud [4 points] - I know....but he has the best fixtures and is nailed on to start
    E) Wildcard

    Szczesny
    Terry, Evra, Clyne
    Ozil, Silva, Nasri, Barkley
    Suarez, Rooney, Lukaku

The Assman is only flagged because he can't play against his parent club Liverpool this week. Giroud may well play if he's recovered from illness; don't go near Aguero until he's had some playing time.

    Opinions appreciated:

    (A) WC Team 1:

    GK: DAVIS, Boruc
DEF: Terry, Koscielny, Burner (WARD) (Chester)
MID: Hazard, Silva, Ozil, ERIKSEN (Colback)
    ATT: Lukaku, Suarez, JRod

With 3.6 itb to make a straight upgrade from Lukaku -> Aguero at current prices with .4 left over.

    (B) WC Team 2:

    GK: MANONNE, Boruc
DEF: Terry, Koscielny, NASTASIC (Burner) (Chester)
MID Hazard, Silva, Ozil, GERRARD (Colback)
    ATT: Lukaku, Suarez, JRod

With the money to be made for aguero when he is back by doing:
    Ozil->Ramsey
    Lukaku-> Aguero

    The main differences (A) v (B):

    Davis vs Manonne
    Ward vs Nastasic
Eriksen vs Gerrard (initially, though it will become eriksen vs Ramsey once ozil is downgraded)

I'm leaning to something closer to your first team but with Ade/Lallana instead of JRod/Eriksen.

I don't like planning for more than one transfer - always seem to have somewhere else to use it, so you may end up having to take a hit to get Aguero in if you go with option 2.

Also hate rotating GK as it seems like an overspend and I never get it right.

I don't have enough money, if I want aguero, to get Adebayor over JRod unfortunately. Also, I created option 2 with the knowledge that I would have to take a hit to get it.

What I want to know though is whether you think the upgrades in defense are worth what is basically having gerrard instead of ozil.

            GK: Davis, Boruc
DEF: Terry, Koscielny, Burner (Ward) (Chester)
            MID: Hazard, Silva, Ozil, Gerrard
            ATT: Adebayor, Suarez, JRod

With the path to aguero being the money in the bank + a downgrade of the worst performing premium mid to the best performing mid-priced mid.

The Boruc/Mannone combo costs 9.1, or basically what a budget combo from promoted teams would have cost you at the start of the season.

I guess you are right Mannone is cheap so it isn't that bad.

But if I have Boruc, I could go with Davis and save 0.4 to spend plus not have to make a decision. Just a personal preference and probably depends on how strapped you are elsewhere.

Yeah, gif is pretty much it. I really didn't want to, but I'd already burnt one switching out Ravel to avoid the drop, then Walcott, then Cabaye, then Evans, plus Rooney headache tipped me over the edge...

Will be humiliating when my WC team loses to your non-WC team!

Had Yaya and Silva for the past couple weeks and it has worked out nicely. Unless you wanted to get Gerrard, Lallana, etc. Silva/Yaya may be the best combo.

Gerrard and Adebayor replacing Walcott and Rooney for a hit or should I be patient with Rooney.

Moyes talking sh!te about Rooney being injured makes it more likely he'll play than that he won't, if his track record is anything to go by.

Because I'm 0.1m short to get Ozil in for Walcott.
So it's either, Gerrard, Cazorla, Oscar, lallana, silva..
Already have Toure, Mutch, Bannan, Eriksen , (Walcott)

        Gerrard or Cazorla maybe..

Unfortunately not! Basically I'm trying to work out to go for

          A) Clyne or Shaw
          B) Lallana or Eriksen
          C) Oscar or Gerrard

Preferring to keep Ozil and Eriksen as it will allow me to get the price rises. My TV is pretty low!

Haha, fair point. But this is pretty much finalised now.Only issues seem to be

        A) Clyne or Shaw
        B) Lallana or Eriksen
        C) Oscar or Gerrard

Would love to have both Silva and Yaya, but the issue is unfortunately cant afford either of them!

          A) Clyne
          B) Lallana
          C) Gerrard since you have Hazard

^ for what it's worth. That being said, i'm going with this if it helps.

          Boruc Davis
          Coleman Kosc Chester Burner Ward
          Hazard Oscar Silva Gerrard Ozil
          Suarez JRod Bony

          1.3m banked.

          Gerrard/Oscar > cheapie, JRod/Bony > Aguero when he's back.

Only issue is whether Clyne is nailed on though. Thanks anyways mate, you are always of great help!

Hang on... I just worked out a way to get Silva. It would mean
            Mutch + Ozil + Oscar => Noone + Cazorla + Silva
            Worth it?

Wow awesome team. The only changes I would make are
            a) Adebayor instead of bony for the next two gameweeks, then bring in bony post gw22
            b) Marshall/Mannone rotation rather than Boruc/Davis and upgrade Burner to Clyne/Shaw because under OGS I dont think Burner is nailed on anymore.Remember Hudson @ 3.9 put in a MOTM performance in the cup!

Clyne is nailed on imo. Yea I think that's a better trio, right amount of risk and consistency.

              a) Thanks, yea definitely considering Ade in place of Bony, just reluctant to waste a transfer on that knowing I would need to keep transfers for Aguero.
              b) This Burner not nailed on thing, is an FFS rumour, i'll see it to believe it! Reason why i'm staying away from rotation is that it's never worked for me. If i do rotate keepers though, it will be Boruc - Foster.

                a) Why dont you save one next gw then? will give you two transfers for gw23 when aguero will be back
                b) Boruc-Foster will be good as well. Mannone/Marshall are cheaper though

Yea that's the plan mate, save the FT next week. So in any case it's either bony or ade. Not gonna make a transfer ade>bony in 22 as u suggested.

Personal preference is to pick keepers from teams that aren't relegation material. I can see the appeal of mannone Marshall but I don't like it personally
