Rene Meulensteen’s first move of the winter transfer window was to bring a familiar face back to the Premier League. The Fulham boss snapped up former Cottagers favourite Clint Dempsey on a two-month loan deal from MLS side Seattle Sounders as he looks to add some top-flight experience to boost his side’s battle against the drop.

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Dempsey was delighted to be back after leaving under somewhat acrimonious circumstances back in August 2012. With the MLS currently in off-season, he is keen to use the time in London to improve his form ahead of the upcoming World Cup:

“It feels good to be back. This (Fulham) has always seemed like my home in Europe and I am excited to be back and be part of this team and play in this league. I wanted to get back to playing at the highest level and getting back and helping the team in the situation where they are not where they want to be in the table. But going into a World Cup year you want to get into that top form and carry that forward so hopefully I can have a good showing.”

The History

Dempsey’s career kicked off in his native America back in 2004 with New England Revolution. The midfielder spent three seasons at the club, producing 25 goals and 13 assists over 71 appearances – he also helped his side reach the MLS Final twice before being snapped up by Fulham in the January 2007 transfer window.

Over five-and-a-half seasons at Craven Cottage, Dempsey was a slow starter but eventually developed into one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League. The first few years produced 21 goals and seven assists from 110 league games before Dempsey’s attacking sensibilities stepped up another level, with 29 strikes and 11 assists from 74 matches. Indeed, his final year at the Cottage saw Dempsey end the season as the top scoring midfielder in the FPL game, with 17 goals, seven assists and 22 bonus points underlining his displays.

Snapped up by Tottenham prior to the end of the 2012 summer transfer window, Dempsey’s Fantasy potential all but dried up. He started just 22 league games under Andre Villas-Boas, scoring seven times and delivering six assists in his only season at White Hart Lane before returning to the US in August last year. Yet to flourish at Seattle, though, he’s produced just one goal and a single assist over 12 matches, including league and play-off games. At international level, Dempsey has served up 36 goals in 101 appearances for the US.

The Prospects

Having failed to gain clearance in time for the New Year’s Day win over West Ham, Dempsey made his debut during last weekend’s FA Cup draw at Norwich. The two month period will therefore afford him seven league fixtures in which make an impact (SUN, ars, swa, SOU, mun, LIV, wba), with some Fantasy managers even considering him for the armband this Saturday as Sunderland pay visit to the Cottage.

In terms of game time, Dempsey seems a likely starter as Meulensteen looks for his top-flight know-how to make a difference in the opposition box. Given that only one Fulham attacking midfielder – Pajtim Kasami – has scored more than once this season, it’s obvious the Cottagers are in desperate need of firepower in the final third of the pitch.

Meulensteen started with Kieran Richardson, Adel Taarabt and Damien Duff behind Dimitar Berbatov in a 4-2-3-1 against the Hammers and it looks odds on that Dempsey will replace Richardson on the left, with his manager going on to say:

“Clint has spent so many years playing in the Premier League. We know where his strengths lie whether it is coming in from the left or playing as a deeper striker or a number nine depending on who you are playing against. The most important thing is that he will be a good boost for us.”

Given that Kasami – who currently sits in 5% of FPL sides – is the most owned Fulham midfielder (or attacker), Dempsey’s arrival won’t have a knock-on effect on any popular Fantasy assets. Instead, he offers the option of a short-term flutter for those Fantasy managers who reckon the 30-year old can quickly reach full match fitness and reproduce the form of years gone by.

Despite their 6-0 mauling at Hull in Gameweek 19, the Cottagers have notched twice in three of their last four, suggesting an upturn in attacking displays under Meulensteen. Whilst the upcoming games against Arsenal, United and Liverpool may prove tricky, Dempsey could easily produce the goods in the other four fixtures across his remaining schedule and, at 7.4 in FPL (7.7 in the Sky Sports game and 4.0 in the Sun Dream Team,), his top-flight history suggests that, despite his patchy form since leaving Spurs, we’d be foolish to write him off completely.

42/2 = 26 is an especially weird mistake to make!

usually a mistake would be the other way round like 52/2=21

      I'm definitely overthinking this now.

Noises on here seem to suggest Rooney is unlikely to be risked this w/e, and instead saved for che and the 2nd leg of the cup. With that in mind, what do you think is the best move here?

    A) No hits and just hope Rooney (or Sterling, who is a concern himself with Sturridge potentially back) start this week.

    B) Rooney -> JRod (4 points). Gives a nailed on in form striker with a good fixture, and raises enough cash for Sterling -> Hazard next week.

    C) Rooney -> Adebayor/Giroud/Negredo (4 points). All have decent fixtures up to the end of the WC.

    Szczesny
    Terry, Evra, Clyne
    Silva, Ozil, Nasri, Barkley
    Suarez, Rooney, Lukaku

I think so. Got him at 6.0m and he's nailed on with a good goal threat. Fixtures would be the only reason I get rid. Looking at getting 3 top defenders and 2 ubers for the bench most weeks, something like:

        Baines, Terry, Kos/Mert, Chester, Ward(got at 4.0m)

        You?

I'm reluctant to sell. Paid 6.3m for him, but non of my main rivals own him.

We have similar TV - I'm assuming you are not getting a 7m-ish midf then(Eg Lala/Eriksen)?

If I keep Terry then I'm left with Mutch+5.5m midf.

          😕

Undecided yet. Looking at WCing after GW23 with this lot:

            Boruc, Davis
            Baines, Terry, Kos*, Ward, Chester
            Hazard, Silva, Ramsey, Lallana*, Noone*
            Suarez, Aguero, Lukaku

In the above I would start the same 11 every week. An alternative could be to switch Lallana and Noone for Barkley & Januzaj, who rotate nicely until GW32. Would give me another mil to upgrade elsewhere, perhaps Kos -> Mert, or even keep the cash back. Thoughts?

He is the missing piece of the puzzle.

Kos is good enough I think. I really think not owning Haz will hurt you.

I assume you're going Lukaku > Aguero when he's back?

If so then B, as I don't see the point in the others when you'd have to ditch them (or another big hitter) anyway to afford the Aguero transfer.

Plan is to get Aguero back when I wildcard after GW23. Personally I don't think Aguero will start in GW21 or GW22, and then it's tot for GW23 (not the easiest). Pellegrini has said Aguero is 1-2 weeks away from being fit and there's no need for him to rush Aguero back for CAR.

Had Lukaku for the last 5 games or so and he's not been hitting form.

This is the order I'll go for if I were you:
      1. J Rod
      2. Podolski
      3. Bony
      4. Lukaku
      5. Giroud (mainly coz he's racing for fitness)

Exactly what i've been thinking as well. Have some serious ground to catch up on so I decided to WC it this week. This is what i have so far

        Davis (Mannone)
        Coleman Kosc Azpi (Alcaraz Chester)
        Hazard Silva Eriksen Gerrard (Oviedo)
        Suarez Ade JRod

        with 3.2 ITB.

The 5th mid would just add pop to Yaya Lallana Ozil and Hazard. My problem is who is more likely to explode Lukaku or Remy? Outside of the City game I like Newcastle's fixtures.

Few would have guessed that Arsenal could get 6 CS out of the last 9. Tee only times they conceded more than 1 goal are the opener (when they were still unsettled), and that thrashing at Etihad. They're getting very solid at the back, and some of their starters are steals at 5.5m.

What with all the talk of template teams, I have to say that though I'll probably go down the same routes as most, there are only 2 players (Suarez and Hazard) I haven't ditched or changed in some variation of my WC draft. Seems to be a host of options now, whereas only a few weeks ago I though we were all going to end up with exactly the same team.

I know we all have aspirations to finish as high up as possible in the overall rankings, but if your ML is competitive then winning that by as much as possible (for bragging rights and all) should be first priority and the rest will fall in line, no?

I mean realistically, ALL the people that we interact with on a daily basis on here or TFPL represent a minority of the those you're up against in FPL itself..so while, yes it's possible that these 'template' teams are very templatized when it comes to these discussions, the fact is that many people likely won't have these exact similar teams, though a handful of the players will be present throughout.

Arguments can be made for template teams at many rank levels and if you pick a solid team I think you'll move up the rankings no matter what. There's 18 gameweeks to go, your position at season's end will come down to a lot of the moves you make after the January wildcard and the captaincy choices you make in that time as well. Set yourself up nice, leave some money in the coffers for emergencies and everything should fall in line.

on a side note, it's cool (if you think about it) that we all help each other out so much when in reality we are technically competing against one another on the grand scale and in the FFS League 😆

Have won mini leagues & missed out on a better OR due to covering rivals.
All depends on what your main goal is. If you lead by a great amount, you don't care about rivals & go for the best OR.

what I meant was, you don't have many (or any? at least I don't) of your mini league managers at this site..the templates that we're proposing here are certainly out there beyond just this site but they still don't cover all the people that play the game? now obviously the higher you are, the less this is true as those people are in the norm..so the templates proposed here that are often shot down are most likely good enough to carry you to the top of your mini-leagues so if you just tweak them a bit and continue to manage well the rest of the season you'll surely move up the OR..

I don't know..just speculating here, the past few months is the first time I've ever gone into this level of detail with FPL

Be safe and get the highly owned Ozil or take the risk and bring in a differential in Cazorla? Could define my season!

If you don't currently own him, is Hazard still a must have for those WCing for the GW24 games?

    CHE don't have great fixtures.
Lamps will be back to reclaim pens
    Oscar is 1.6m cheaper.

I'm talking myself into going the Oscar route at the moment, although my team value isn't the best.

Best player in the most in-form team in the league.

      Ignore at your peril 😉

PS - Oscar's a good option too but not as good as Hazaar yet.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big Hazard fan, it's just the 1.6m makes a big difference for the rest of my squad.

def taking wally out but not sure whether taking distin out for a hit is worth it esp since my def is weak for this gw

    mannone
    burner chester mert (distin olson)
    hazard coutinho nasri wally (januzaj)
    suarez rooney lukaku

A: just do wally >> ozil
    B: wally + distin >> ozil + 5.3m def (-4).but which def?
    C: wally + distin >> silva + 6m def (-4)
    D: wally + distin >> eriksen + baines (-4)

but unless you play a 4-4-2 regularly do you want to have to choose 1 of 4 quality defenders to bench each gameweek?

I will play the fixtures with the defence so it's not the defence that bothers me really plus you could have say Chester on the bench and play Azpi Hull may keep a cleanie and Chelsea concede that's the way it goes

Just watched some highlights from the manu game last night.. That Januzaj chap makes a strong case for a 5.1 mid. looks the only player at manu who offers some threat. it's him vs Puncheon for me and right now Januzaj has the spot. Being a manu player he'll rise like mad if he scores/assists too(check his history).. Who else going for him as their 5th mid?

Yup he's a great pick, Young and Nani injured, Kagawa ineffective on the wing and Valencia just horrendous. Btw yesterday he was moved into the central attacking midfield position too! I'm getting him but I also have a sneaky feeling that post January will be Zaha time (Januzaj and Zaha both will play I mean)

Well he was the only one threatening because they were missing their 2 most threatening players. He's quite simply not nailed on once Rooney/RVP return and he's not really reliable, he's more likely to come off your bench for 1 point than he is to do something. I know because I had him from when he was 4.6 and he's frustrating at best.

Maybe true but in all honesty I think this will be a stop start season for RVP and Rooney, both seem to be picking up little injuries consistently. Could be to do with Moyes training methods, didn't the dutch coach warn that Moyes was overworking his strikers?
