A new year, a new opportunity. While the frantic festive spell saw me fail miserably in my attempt to take a bite out of Granville’s mini-league lead, January does at least hand me, and other stragglers, a chink of light. The Winter Wildcard could well be a false dawn, however. Having got my squad back on an even keel, the freedom to scrap it and start over is almost a scary prospect.

On the plus side, the situation certainly seems to have Granville spooked. My Mancunian rival is looking on his Wildcard with suspicion, leaving me hoping that, during his own January surgery, he makes one or two vital slips with the scalpel.

Around the Wildcard chatter, Granville and I deliberate over how to fill the Walcott-sized hole in our teams, whilst giving the regulars their usual airing. We even reveal plans on how you, yes you, the listener, can play a part in future ScoutCasts.

Please note: this show was recorded before Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko scored five goals against West Ham. Rest assured, I would have moaned further about the pairing’s miserable two points at Swansea had it been recorded following last night’s goal blitz.

Sweep with the new broom via this link or grasp the nettle of change via the handy player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    @Evs help me!!!!!!
    Boruc
    Coleman, Terry, Kos,
    Silva, Hazard Gerrard 9.4
    Suarez(C), Negredo, Adebayor
Subs: Davis, Ward, Pozuelo and Chester

I could do 9.4 to Eriksen and then upgrade Ade thoughts?

Well, I've decided not to WC this week. The market is stale, and I'll only be upset if Rooney and Barkley start at the weekend.

Anyway, there will be a whole new template WC team by 6pm on Sunday. Better to keep hold of it for as long as possible, I say 😉

Just ran a very interesting comparison in the members area, as I'm very interested in including Yaya in my WC team. My hypothesis of course being, this year something has happened to the man that we haven't seen before: more chances created, more shots, a more advanced role, etc. Right?

    Wrong!

Yaya 2012 KILLS Yaya 2013. I compared the first 20 GWs (in 2013) to the first 19 GWs (in 2012) because that's a similar amount of minutes, and couldn't believe my eyes. Yaya 13 can't catch a single break. Almost every stat you look at, Yaya has not improved one single bit (apart from goal conversion of course). He also has a somewhat deeper role and fewer passes/received in advanced areas. Shots, chances created etc are all lower. Accuracy is slightly higher but really not very different.

I just can't believe it. Was sure I was going to find significant improvements. Don't think I'll be keeping him afterall. 🙁

(Hope I'm not breaking any rules by bringing these stats up, I haven't included any numbers)

The only stat that counts is points and this year Yaya keeps on giving. He is less injury prone than SIlva, he rarely gets carded and is on freekicks. If you get Yaya you can likely keep for rest of season, which probably won't be the case with Silva.

Most players you can predict by stats but Yaya is another story. One of the few players you will ever see who needs watching to know how good he is. When he drives forward, or hits a ball, it's with an awful lot of purpose...Two charges forward by Yaya are worth ten compared to other players,,,(made up stat)

Who to take out to get Aguero when he is back.

    Current Mid:

    Ozil, Haz, Silva, Eriksen, Jedinak

    Thinking
    A) Ozil to Ramsey + Ade to Aguero.
    or
    B) Eriksen to Ramsey, then Silva to XX to get Aguero.

So keep Ozil or keep Silva to get Aguero.

OK. Finally summoned up courage to do a RMWCT now things are a bit quieter.

    Marshall Mannone
    Coleman Koscielny Kompany Bardsley Ward
    Hazard Ozil Silva Oscar Mutch
    Suarez Lukaku Sturridge

Any better alternatives to Bardsley/Mutch combo ?
I know Mutch is flagged, but watching him recently I am happy to wait a week to keep him in.

Sturridge is an early punt while waiting for Aguero.
Considering sticking with JRod for this week and then Studge next week if Aguero not back.

Hoping to do Ozil to Ramsey & Studge/JRod to Aguero as and when.

Complicates as in locks in 6.3 versus Nasty/Azpi….or are you thinking Zab…or Terry ?
I looked through Wakey's defender table and that clinched Kompany for me….despite MCI not greta on CS.
I am thinking they might tighten at the back once Kompany & Nasty settle back in.

        What's your reservation ?

here's another one..Ordered by shots conceded per team in the box for any period you wish to use...The ones at the bottom of the table are a great indicator of the potential for a CS...and look who's at the bottom most often whichever period you use. http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/my-stats-tables/view/4750/

Money tbh , I think you could spread the cash it would allow you to keep Ozil / improve on oscar , I've decided to go Mert,Kos/ Coleman 3 rotators. I don't trust city but I do trust wakey I'm more of a motd man rather than stats tbh.
You will have bench issues the more I look , your planning very far ahead in a season where fixes have overtaken planning IMO , excellant team tbh but just not for me .
          Best of luck tho.

OK. Thanks for the feedback….I can wait until saturday morning to finalise.
Might hold off and stick with JRod. Good fixture this w/end anyway.

Still only 2 txfers for Aguero in - and can watch Studge if I want to switch him in in advance of Kun.

            Thanks for that HVT.

Not too worried about bench trouble.Bench would usually be Mutch, Bardsley, Ward, and can just switch them in and out if I worry about one of the bigger defenders.
I'd usually try and leave Mutch for an auto-sub off the bench.

GKs rotate really well, and I can either double up with Bardsley (or Mutch) or spread the risk by using Ward with either.

re: 3 cheap defs to keep Ozil: I originally had Chester in there instead of keeping Bardsley. Keeping Ozil would mean holding Lallana instead of getting Silva.

To then get Silva - Kompany would definitely have to go to someone dirt cheap - Baker ? That would leave my defence a bit too thin for me - think that there'll be more CS going forward with my planned back 5.

No matter how much you have - you are always tight on TV !!

All very 'template' but at least I can 'buy down' to other options with this team.
Appreciate your thoughts mate. Thanks for coming back to explain.

If you come back and look here - How would you improve on Oscar... other than Ozil or the MIDs I'm already planning ?

WIll check for replies in the morning.
            G'night 😉

Evs with all the respect, but I really don't see a reason why not to WC. I am on WC and was trying to make money. Nothing drastic happened regarding price rises. Still none double riser anyway. You team is in a mess. WC is needed. Suit your self. I think you will improve at least 30pts this week with wc.

If u wait till the end fair enough, but if u r doing in GW 22 no point in hanging on. Just my 2 cents. Good luck and let us know what u have decided on it

        Your making sense, I agree.

With the exception of Evans I can see Rooney and Yaya pulling through.

        Cabaye is the risk.

          Me or Evs?

I am pro WC. If I see his team I would do at least 8pt hit. How many times we have all 11 starters played? Always something unpredictable happens. He is good for 11 players if he is lucky. He could lose a lot of ground this week IMO, but suit him self. As Granny once mentioned WC is overrated anyway and it is equal to 30pts or so. With that team and WC in hand 30 pts could be easily made this week so it is valued to do it IMO.

I play WC when I see added value in it. If this case isn't a added value I really don't know what is. Rooney news will be junk anyway. Wait on Yoyo and do it if he is doubtful. Or just keep it, more chance for us to catch ground 😉

Would you do Cabaye > Lallana for a hit?
I have Redmond, Chester & Gabbidon on my bench (and Rooney doubtful).

Cab has been great for me so far. Got him for 6.2. Was planing to get rid of him on a WC anyway but his form has been outstanding. And I also have Remy.

It's basically for this GW only. I would prefer Cabaye for GWs 22/23 over Lallana, if fit. But if his injury is more serious, and with price fall/rise imminent.... Ugh, don't know what to do.

How can we decide who's the best player in the world? Is goals and skills all what football is about?
When we say that Messi/Ronaldo are the best players in the world? They are the best in their position, but how good would they be as a goalkeeper?

Nowadays I feel that with the new generations of players and fans, the most important aspect about being the "best" in the world is all about the numbers of goals you score and how many players you can run through. Everyone look at those who can entertain the most to be the best player. But what about the defenders, deep lying midfielders and the goalkeepers?

Since the very first Ballon d'or which was given in 1956, only 5 defensive players have won. 59 Winners. 5 defensive and the rest of them were all offensive players/strikers.

My only concern is when all of the winners are offensive players, what will happen to the defensive part of the game? Whenever I hear kids talk about football, it's either "did you see Ronaldo's goal?" "Did you see Zlatan's fly-kick goal?" No one ever says "Did you see Chiellini's great tackle?"

I wanted to bring this up, since I don’t have many people to discuss about this. I want to see other point of views. Please feel free to debate with me. I hope everyone who can, will leave a comment. Enlighten me! 🙂 It's not related to the article, but I didn't know where else to post this.

Depends if I'm hungover or not and the severity of said hangover. As I've given up drinking for January I imagine this weekend will consist of me leaping out of bed, fixing myself a nice breakfast, going for a run and then awaiting the day's football action. Makes a nice change from the inability to get out of bed and flashbacks.
