An epic Wildcard guide proved amongst the week’s most popular posts as the community considered the drop or draft dilemmas. In this week’s round-up, we also revisit discussions on the pros and cons of the more complex Fantasy games, the potential trends which could emerge in the second half of the season, while moderator and Hall of Famer, Evs, offered his shortlist of “essentials”. As always, we also find time to discover who is rising and falling throughout our community’s leagues.

The Hottest Topics

It started with the words “Long Post Alert!!” but not one of the 1,400 words of Deadeye367’s Wildcard guide were wasted. This popular post covered some of the major factors to be considered when Wildcarding, such as rotating goalkeepers and creating a strong spine of heavyweights throughout your squad. Essential stuff.

Another Wildcard issue being considered this week was whether Fantasy managers are being too hasty in ditching their quality players. Everton’s stuttering striker, Romelu Lukaku, is certainaly among those being considered for the chop. HeyDudes13’s discussion on just what to do with Lukaku provided a chance for his naysayers to emerge with Beavis, Nomar, Lazarus and Little Z among those ready to ditch.

Manchester United’s teenage sensation Adnan Januzaj is another potentially earmarked for the scrap heap, although it appears he still has a sizeable fanbase among the community. Rotation fears, stronger budget options and a Gameweek 28 blank for both Manchester United and City were key factors raised in our Januzaj discussion.

If that pair look under threat, it’s pretty clear that the twin firepower of Daniel Sturridge and Sergio Aguero are high on the most wanted list. Can the Liverpool and City pair rekindle their tri-force with Suarez in Fantasy Football’s own SAS combo? Their goalscoring heroics in yesterday’s games certainly strengthened their case and prompted further investment. Earlier this week, RonH and Hot Sauce were among those talking up the “SAS”, although Hyndman was more doubtful, speaking out on the merits of saving cash for midfield investment.

As we moved into the second half of the season, Dufflinks was on hand to look at some trends that are likely to emerge as the Gameweeks roll by. A host of scenarios were considered, including whether the so-called “big” teams would tighten up at the back and if a relegation scrap would promote the use of the target man and long-ball.

While that discussion may have you considering some Wildcard differentials, Evs was on hand to give you his view on those players who have established “essential” status. We’re not sure what qualifies the guy to be so bold – except perhaps the fact that he’s currently on target for a fourth top-2k finish in five seasons having ranked fifth overall last term. Yeah – best listen up.

Finally, at the other end of the Fantasy Premier League rank spectrum, Mark asked the community for their views on the complexity of Fantasy games and whether you’re put off by those that involve captain and starting XI changes during a Gameweek. Marr revealed he is a big fan of such complex games, most notably the Sky Sports effort. While MJ6987 was amongst those who felt that the added layer of involvement is too much of a commitment.

The Community Tournaments

Teltzham leads the charge in HeelsOverHead’s Worst To First 2Million + Club, a tournament for teams of an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five Gameweeks,

Teltzham currently holds a rank of 35,118 going into Gameweek 22. Five teams were in the top 100,000 at the Gameweek 21 stage.

Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing league lost a further 24 managers at the end of Gameweek 21, leaving 247 to fight on. To enter any of TM’s leagues click here.

Those topping the “Long and Winding Road” (LAWR) leagues after Gameweek 21 were Evs, Christina, Minty, Giggs Boson, Demented Flamingo, Champ and Athletico Timbo. The 127-strong main LAWR league leader is Beric.

Our moderators Evs and Athletico Timbo were also pre-Gameweek 22 league leaders in In Tommy We Trust’s All Things leagues. Others topping his leagues were Bootsy, Crouch Potato, Jambo17 and Koneheads.

Evs also continued to lead the Old Farts Club league, the 27 -trong league featuring the community’s elder-statesmen and women. Meanwhile, Athletico Timbo snatched the lead from DonTheSpecialOne in the Fantasy Football Scout veterans competition the Puffinboy Memorial Cup, named after one of this site’s first posters.

In the Iron Man competition, for those taking part in multiple games, some chap called Jonty sits on top in the Fantasy Premier League part of the competition, while Gigging Order continues to top the Sky Sports game but has lost his Metro league lead to FFS mod, In Like Flynn.

Meanwhile in the FFS Moderators and Contributors league standings, Evs and Athletico Timbo shared top spot ahead of Gameweek 22, having made the same number of transfers. New recruit to the editorial team Swanny14 joins the league in pole position for the wooden spoon. His fellow new editorial recruit 7ShadesofSmoke faired much better and was a new entry at number four after Gameweek 21. Any claims that Mark recruited both to keep him off the bottom are vehemently refuted.

Why a HARDCORE scouter will never win the league:

    Four main things all connected

    Analysing TOO much

Dismissing the bandwagons as 'casuals' or 'template'

    Too many differentials

    Captain punts

    1. If you spend a lot of time on here you'll spend hours thinking of which player to bring in. Thing is there's so many stats and even if some of them are good you can end up convincing yourself that a **** player will do well or that a template player is just in a golden patch. Meanwhile all that time you spent looking at stats so that you bring in cabaye (because of his shots outside the box and west ham conceding shots outside the box) and your casual rival does the same thing with about 5 minutes thought after looking at cabayes history.

    2. You're too proud to bring in ramsey because he's never scored that many before and his streak will end. He's just too 'template' everyone has him. 'If you know anything about football you know yaya toure isn't going to score free kicks every game...he won't get many chances from open play' all total ********* yeah you want to pick oscar over hazard and baines over coleman go for it. Enjoy a hundred point gap. Yes you may think they are 'better' players or they should be scoring at least as much. Keyword is 'should'. You forgot the human factor.

    3. Every differential is a risk. So less chance of pulling off a success. And it comes at a price. It takes up a slot of someone who would have done well. Then you have to take a hit to fix it.

    4. The most stupid thing you can do in this game. A punt will work out a couple of times in a season at most. Do it every week and you'll lose a lot more than you gain. Do it most weeks and you'll lose more than you gain. Do it even just four or five times a season and you'll still **** up. But you think you know better than the crowd. And before you know it suarez has helped himself to a hattrick and walcott has limped off with the armband and two points to his name.

      Nicely put old son.

This game involves a fair degree of chance, or if you wish, luck.

Anyone who has won the competition will have been "lucky" to some degree. Analysis and following the game will get you so far (maybe top 10k or even top 1k), but to win it, you need those differentials.

Bang on the money Maxi. This is why I get confused when people say things like it's 80% skill 20% luck. Yeah maybe for the top 50k it is but for the top 5k or 1k there's a lot more luck involved..

Baines has played 6 and a half fewer games than Coleman and has 2 fewer goals but 5 more bonus points. Unless you need the money, I see no reason to go for Coleman over Baines.

Spot on. It's not called "Fantasy Football" for no reason. Many people are just 'fantasizing' certain player can score hugely this coming GW because they feel the player is 'due'. So they punt.

      Fantasies are just not realities.

    How about this wc team?

    Boruc - Davies
    Baines - Kosc - Azpi - Ward - Olsson
    Cazorla - Navas - Hazard - Januzaj - Noone
    Aguero - Bony - Suarez

Should Baines or Azpi be downgraded to fund Silva instead of Navas?

In order to get Aguero I need to sell Lukaku and downgrade Ozil to either Johnson or Wiltshire. Both are playing very well.

I think Aresnal have marginally better fixtures but what happens when Ramsey is back?

    Morning lads,

I read the posts and everbody mention to get Ramsey once he returns and no one even consider Wilshire.

For me, the question is who will be the support along Flamini and who will play at right wing. I think the support player is has a great effect in Arsenal game.

When I checked Wilshires's last 4 GW, he has more touch in the box and created chances. On the other hand Ramsey take the shot more often.

The question is: Wilshire worth to own with his 6.2 M price or Ramsey worth extra 1 M?

Yes to Bony..no to Caz..Caz and Silva have much the same stats of late...Caz got his reward at the weekend and Silva will soon...I hope. Caz's attempts on goal and chances created are getting up to Wally standards this past month even whilst carrying the effects of an ankle knock. This weekend was the first time he played without hinderance (Wenger) and it showed.

Also holding to Silva for the same reasons. Cazorla is scary, though. This season has put me off him because of rotation and bad returns, but we all know the helluva shot that he's got, and thus him having those stats is just massive points waiting to happen. If I wildcard this week, I will probably do Silva -> Cazorla just for few rounds.

Bony or Giroud, that's a question. Again, with my wildcard I may go for Bony, holding Giroud right now and don't think swapping is worth taking a hit. Home match against Fulham is appealing, but Swansea's attacking creativity, or the lack of it, is not.

Anyway, to put it short: no use to chase Cabaye's and Cazorla's doubles from this week, they happened already and I missed them. Silva should start to score any moment now and I'm waiting for it. He does not have tendency to frustrate by non-scoring performances, only by his repeating injuries.

Bony scored less than Ade/Eto'o, so it's not "casual", as you say.

True but I have Eriksen. Do casual avoid double up entirely? Or they don't care at all.

Already took Etoo in replacing Suarez 😎

Benching dilemma: Sagna (sou) or Kolarov (tot)?

I also have Wilshere and Lallana, but usually prefer to play mids over defenders

I'd bench Kolarov, man citys defense looks more likely to concede to me. Adebayor against his former club too.

That was certainly my first thought, just the 'potential' of Kolarov attacking returns that make it difficult... last two away games have been 9 and 12 points

I see, though Newcastle were missing key defenders and Cardiff are slightly more open under Ole. I think Spurs at home will be harder to break though on the flanks and I'm not sure Pellegrini will take the risk to do so.

      I got Kolarov for his away games: 12, 9, 1, 6, 9 are his last 5 away scores compared to 0, 1, 2, 0, 1 for home games.

Be honest, you got Kolarov with Cardiff at home in mind! 🙂

Would you bench Sagna then? Arsenal look good for a clean sheet most games now... could always bench Wilshere...

Yeah, I'm benching Kos personally. I can see Southampton scoring.

2FT and I'm not sure what to do, your advice will be much appreciated.

Ozil and Adebayor -> Januzaj (CAR sto FUL) and Aguero seems a bit sideways..

    What would you do with?

    Szcesny - (mannone)
    Coleman - Kocielny - Clyne - (Ward) - (Bardsley)
    Hazard - Silva - Ozil - Lallana - (Mutch)
    Suarez - Sturridge - Adebayor

I'd want Aguero in as soon as possible... also play Ward over Clyne

To get Aguero in you've gotta drop one of those mids... so its Ozil or Silva

Wilshere would have been good Arsenal cover, but I think he's up to £6.3m now

Thanks David, Yeah I just miss out on AJ too, which is slightly frustrating. Januzaj's stats have been good, with CAR sto FUL in the next three utd will surely score goals. maybe?

An alternative Ozil + Sturridge -> Eriksen + Aguero.

I dont like him in my team either. Say I gain 0,2 during my wildcard period I might get a 4,7 defender. Suggestions? Already have Boruc and Davies so Clyne implies doubling of southampton. And Clyne does not seems like a secure starter

I love it when people make predictions based on who they own. Here are mine.

    West Brom 6-0
    3 Anelka goals, no assists.
    1 x Baines OG
    1 x Coleman OG
    1 x Lukaku OG.

Distin, Coleman, Lukaku and Baines straight red cards.
