An epic Wildcard guide proved amongst the week’s most popular posts as the community considered the drop or draft dilemmas. In this week’s round-up, we also revisit discussions on the pros and cons of the more complex Fantasy games, the potential trends which could emerge in the second half of the season, while moderator and Hall of Famer, Evs, offered his shortlist of “essentials”. As always, we also find time to discover who is rising and falling throughout our community’s leagues.

The Hottest Topics

It started with the words “Long Post Alert!!” but not one of the 1,400 words of Deadeye367’s Wildcard guide were wasted. This popular post covered some of the major factors to be considered when Wildcarding, such as rotating goalkeepers and creating a strong spine of heavyweights throughout your squad. Essential stuff.

Another Wildcard issue being considered this week was whether Fantasy managers are being too hasty in ditching their quality players. Everton’s stuttering striker, Romelu Lukaku, is certainaly among those being considered for the chop. HeyDudes13’s discussion on just what to do with Lukaku provided a chance for his naysayers to emerge with Beavis, Nomar, Lazarus and Little Z among those ready to ditch.

Manchester United’s teenage sensation Adnan Januzaj is another potentially earmarked for the scrap heap, although it appears he still has a sizeable fanbase among the community. Rotation fears, stronger budget options and a Gameweek 28 blank for both Manchester United and City were key factors raised in our Januzaj discussion.

If that pair look under threat, it’s pretty clear that the twin firepower of Daniel Sturridge and Sergio Aguero are high on the most wanted list. Can the Liverpool and City pair rekindle their tri-force with Suarez in Fantasy Football’s own SAS combo? Their goalscoring heroics in yesterday’s games certainly strengthened their case and prompted further investment. Earlier this week, RonH and Hot Sauce were among those talking up the “SAS”, although Hyndman was more doubtful, speaking out on the merits of saving cash for midfield investment.

As we moved into the second half of the season, Dufflinks was on hand to look at some trends that are likely to emerge as the Gameweeks roll by. A host of scenarios were considered, including whether the so-called “big” teams would tighten up at the back and if a relegation scrap would promote the use of the target man and long-ball.

While that discussion may have you considering some Wildcard differentials, Evs was on hand to give you his view on those players who have established “essential” status. We’re not sure what qualifies the guy to be so bold – except perhaps the fact that he’s currently on target for a fourth top-2k finish in five seasons having ranked fifth overall last term. Yeah – best listen up.

Finally, at the other end of the Fantasy Premier League rank spectrum, Mark asked the community for their views on the complexity of Fantasy games and whether you’re put off by those that involve captain and starting XI changes during a Gameweek. Marr revealed he is a big fan of such complex games, most notably the Sky Sports effort. While MJ6987 was amongst those who felt that the added layer of involvement is too much of a commitment.

The Community Tournaments

Teltzham leads the charge in HeelsOverHead’s Worst To First 2Million + Club, a tournament for teams of an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five Gameweeks,

Teltzham currently holds a rank of 35,118 going into Gameweek 22. Five teams were in the top 100,000 at the Gameweek 21 stage.

Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing league lost a further 24 managers at the end of Gameweek 21, leaving 247 to fight on. To enter any of TM’s leagues click here.

Those topping the “Long and Winding Road” (LAWR) leagues after Gameweek 21 were Evs, Christina, Minty, Giggs Boson, Demented Flamingo, Champ and Athletico Timbo. The 127-strong main LAWR league leader is Beric.

Our moderators Evs and Athletico Timbo were also pre-Gameweek 22 league leaders in In Tommy We Trust’s All Things leagues. Others topping his leagues were Bootsy, Crouch Potato, Jambo17 and Koneheads.

Evs also continued to lead the Old Farts Club league, the 27 -trong league featuring the community’s elder-statesmen and women. Meanwhile, Athletico Timbo snatched the lead from DonTheSpecialOne in the Fantasy Football Scout veterans competition the Puffinboy Memorial Cup, named after one of this site’s first posters.

In the Iron Man competition, for those taking part in multiple games, some chap called Jonty sits on top in the Fantasy Premier League part of the competition, while Gigging Order continues to top the Sky Sports game but has lost his Metro league lead to FFS mod, In Like Flynn.

Meanwhile in the FFS Moderators and Contributors league standings, Evs and Athletico Timbo shared top spot ahead of Gameweek 22, having made the same number of transfers. New recruit to the editorial team Swanny14 joins the league in pole position for the wooden spoon. His fellow new editorial recruit 7ShadesofSmoke faired much better and was a new entry at number four after Gameweek 21. Any claims that Mark recruited both to keep him off the bottom are vehemently refuted.

all this talk of united needing players etc. does no-one think a formation change could help?

midfield is our weakest area but we play only 2 mids there. dropping young/valencia who offer nothing would mean we were stronger through the middle and could play kagawa where he needs to play

newcastle beat us by playing cabaye, tiote, anita and gouffran in midfield. overwhelmed carrick/cleverly. the old 4-4-2 moyes keeps rolling out doesn't give united a chance

who are the decent out and out wingers now? they are being phased out imo. hazard is an inverted winger, rarely see him whipping balls in. same with ronaldo, he always cuts in. at bayern, robben and ribery do the same.

today hazard was tucked in and was essentially a number 10. crossing is the least effective way to create chances. we need to move on from 442.

It would hardly be a 4-4-2 if we actually got the correct personnel though.

Januzaj inside forward from the right, another winger from the left, Rooney deep(er), Van Persie up top. Carrick holding and a box-to-box midfielder alongside him.

Yes..it's absolutely stuck in the seventies football..None of the best teams play in any sort of recognisable formation...Yes they do a line up for the kick off but in realty those players are all over the pitch interchanging and swopping positions. Even any idea of a CDM is becoming a bit 1990's...

i agree to a certain extent. at arsenal they play three number 10s basically behind giroud and they all chop and change. you cannot tell me, kagawa, rooney and janujaz cannot do the same thing. just need to drop young/valencia who offer nothing and make the formation rigid

Yeah..and the interchanging get's even worse when you look at foreign teams..even to the point of no recognisable striker...Yes those three could easily do that as well as the CDM's joining in..but not if you are just doing the old fashioned 442...Look at Ramires this season at Chelsea..a CDM ?..really..spends as much time raiding into the box.. Does Carrick ?

mourinho is doing well with the chelsea system yes, i agree. carrick has played his whole united career with just one partner in midfield. other team have 3/4 others in the midfield area. people say he passes sideways but when the wingers are out wide, where do you pass to? if we had a line of attacking midfielders in front like arsenal/chelsea maybe he could pass forwards more

yeah..and that's part of the problem..having a player park himself in front of the back four may have been ok a few years ago but the better teams have passed that now. Chelsea do it on the odd occasssion but more often than not it's only when they are winning games and they bring on a real holding CDM later in the game...Mikel or somebody.

Says something when our two best central midfielders are 32 & 29 respectively.

              Investment needed, NOW.

The cause of this is fergies bad transfers. The only few that has worked over the last few years is degea and rvp. And if he had his way Rooney would be not even at the club

I like Rafael, but that challenge today was reckless.
Hope Moyes has the balls to give him and Vidic a right doing for those challenges today.

I have read almost all the comments to this post and to be fair I think you are talking the most sense out of all and exactly what I have been thinking all season.

I was bemused to say the least when Moyes started Kagawa out wide and Januzaj in the hole against Swans last week. It was such a blatant tactical error IMO and the difference was evident in the second half. Some of the through balls Kagawa played were sublime and his all round play in general in the second half was far improved. Januzaj was so much more natural coming in from the wing as an 'inverted' winger.

To me that was arguably our most fluid 45 mins of the season with an under-strength team yet he decides to drop Kagawa again? I honestly think we should either play him in his natural position or let him go.

We really need to move away from the rigidity of the old fashioned 4-4-2 and become a more flexible side. Look how central Chelsea and Arsenal play. Yong is such a terrible waste of a spot imo.

My FPL team name says it all regarding Kagawa (team linked).

Good times with the bad and all that. Honestly I think one top class midfielder would patch us through til the end of the season but don't see it happening. At least when Rooney and RvP return we can get back to knocking Pool from that top 4 spot. All is not lost yet.

    Lukaku - Suarez - Aguero

Wait for news on Ramsey for the Southampton game, or Cazorla now, or one of Cabaye, Eriksen, A Johnson, Lallana.

Januzaj looks a good option for next GW, or double up on Chelsea mid for the West Ham game.

Was 19 points behind before today I'm level now thanks to Eriksen and Ade it's a Coleman (me) vs Jagielka (him) shoot out, if it ends a draw I will win with more goals scored

Nice! To be honest I'm lucky to even be level with him, I had Ade semi-bail me out today to draw level.

It's always going to happen at this stage but I hate running into WC teams. Without the WC I'd have been way clear of his team last week. I've yet to play either of my WC's =/

Same here. Just compared his stats from the last two weeks with the rest of the season.
It's not terrible but his skill levels are down (dribbling, crossing, shooting on target).

I wonder if he's still feeling that shoulder injury he had over Christmas?

Better value in the mid-price range at the moment.

    Cech (Marshal)
    Zabaleta, Kos, Clyne (Olsen, Ward)
    Hazard, Navas, Januzaj, eriksen (pozuela)
    Augerro, Suarez, Adebayor

    1) Is marshal worth the 4.7? Will only be played twice against Norwich and Fulham when Chelsea play arsenal and city, or money best spent else wer?
    2) Zab best 6m defender? Walker better?
    3) navas nailed on for next month with nasri gone?
    4) lallana or eriksen?

Any advice or other suggestions would be greatly appreciated?

      1) No. Cardiff not looking like keeping cleanies anyway at the moment. May as well get a cheap non-playing backup, or Mannone if you want the security.

      2) I'd probably rather have Ivanovic now he's back. Or maybe Jagielka?

      3) Dunno, Jovetic coming back as well.

      4) Lallana for me, Spurs have tough games, Southampton have good ones. Most will probably say Eriksen just as a kneejerk result of this GW though.

Chester injured. I wouldn't touch anyone on Pool's defense so Mignolet should go. With Lucas out I don't think that's getting better. Hold Cabaye for the price rise but be prepared to move him if he's sold.

Really thankful for some comments on my wc team:

    Boruc - Davies
    Baines - Kosc - Azpi - Ward - Chester (or other 4,0)
    Cazorla - Navas - Hazard - Januzaj - Noone
    Aguero - Bony - Suarez

    Assume cabaye being sold. Thanks!

Chester injured so definitely another 4.0. I'd look at Ramsey in place of Cazorla if he's heakthy enough to play in the cup. then you could upgrade Navas to Silva or Yaya.
