Seamus Coleman limps out of Everton’s draw at West Brom with a hamstring problem. Kevin Mirallas scores in successive league games for the first time this term, Romelu Lukaku scrambles another lucky assist but fails to net once again, whilst Pepe Mel rolls out a 4-4-2 and picks up a point in his first match in charge of the Baggies:

Coleman Concern for Toffees
Roberto Martinez and Fantasy managers alike will be eagerly awaiting injury news after the right-back was withdrawn late on at the Hawthorns due to a hamstring problem. Prior to last night’s match at the Hawthorns, Coleman had played every minute of the season – the top scoring defender in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, he is also the most popular backline option and currently resides in 46% of sides, with Per Mertesacker in second, with an ownership of 30% by comparison. Post-match, Martinez confirmed:

“Seamus felt his hamstring a little bit. We are going to assess him. We are going to be cautious and see what the problem is but it’s not a good sign because Seamus would never want to come off the football pitch. He has been in a terrific moment of form so we will try to get him back on as quick as we can.”

Coleman will now be assessed and, with the Merseyside derby only a week away, will be desperate to retain the Republic of International in his starting line-up. If Coleman is ruled out for the short-term, however, his early adopters face a real dilemma – many acquired him at 5.0 at the start of the season and will be reluctant to sell, given that the current price to purchase has now risen to 6.8.

Mirallas the Toffees Goal Hero
Having found the net in the Toffees’ previous league encounter at home to Norwich, the Belgian was amongst the goals once again last night – the first time this term he has scored in back-to-back Gameweeks. Prior to his visit to the Hawthorns, Mirallas had produced just one assist in 10 away appearances, with almost all of his attacking returns arriving at Goodison – for all the undoubted frustration his acquisition brings, the 7.2-priced midfielder has now racked up five goals and four assists for Roberto Martinez’ team. Amongst midfielders, that brings him into ninth spot in the FPL standings – more than City duo David Silva and Jesus Navas, for example. Whilst his role on the right may be under threat from new boy Aiden McGeady, Mirallas’ eye for goal is still looking crucial for the Merseysiders. He has notched three times over the last seven Gameweeks – a tally matched only by Ross Barkley in the Everton midfield over the course of the entire season.

Lukaku Scoring Woes Continue
Whilst Mirallas’ conversion rate picks up, his compatriot failed to find the net once again. Lukaku’s owners were treated to another somewhat fortuitous assist but his lack of cutting edge in the box shows little sign of improving – last night’s blank means he has scored just once in nine league encounters. In a Gameweek where a number of similarly-priced forwards staked a claim for the coveted third forward slot with impressive displays, Lukaku’s performance may well be the final straw for many Fantasy owners. At present, he is still the second most popular forward in the FPL game but, with the Gameweek 23 deadline a week away and winter wildcards being wielded at pace, he looks set to be sacrificed by many.

Mel Scrapes a Debut Draw
With all of their players owned by less than 3% of FPL managers, the main impact of West Brom’s equaliser – courtesy of stand-in centre-half Diego Lugano – was denying their visitors a tenth clean sheet of the season. As we look for signs of new manager Pepe Mel’s impact and tactical preference, it was intriguing to see the Baggies line up in a 4-4-2 formation, with Nicolas Anelka partnered by Matej Vydra up front – those eyeing up budget option Saido Berahino will be disappointed that the youngster was only utilised as a late sub. Elsewhere, Steven Reid was preferred to Billy Jones at right-back, whilst Mel also handed Chris Brunt and Zoltan Gera the wide roles – Stephane Sessegnon and Morgan Amalfitano continue to look peripheral figures in the Baggies’ set-up and currently look unlikely to benefit from the change of manager.

Oh my. I'm tempted by Sturridge, he's always scoring when fit. Ade is cheeky, but he has been in great form so far. I'm WC-ing next week, hoping Ramsey is back by then and we'll know the story about Cabaye.

Yeah. I currently got Negredo, he might not be a bad pick either but not sure he'll give any better returns than the others... SO MANY choices, all could be good really. No standouts.

Negredo has done awful on the road. He's playing a relatively tough defense. Bony has 6 goals in 6 home fixtures, he's playing an absolutely horrible defense at home. I think it's a decent punt, but like I mention below, Eto'o is in that same category. About 7-8 points pr home start, and this is a one-GW punt so.

That's the worry, West Ham are a very physical team. At least with Sturr/Bony you know he's nailed. With Dzeko's form I wouldn't say Negredo is 100% assured of a start, although it seems likely.

Yeah he'd be a punt, which isn't what you need with your defence, Distin is a safer bet. ( I tried having Distin to cover my lack of Coleman earlier on in the season - did not work!)

After enjoying a Juve batch in Serie A Moyes watched PSG's cup clash with Bordeaux. Papers suggest he is dreaming of buying Edinson Cavani!!!

On a serious note, does anybody have a clue who he really was looking for there?

Indeed, losing away to Chelsea was sure, why was it such a shocker is beyond me. Or maybe it is not, I understand that it was a lot of fun to poke at ManU after that match, even if everybody knew how the match will end before it was started.

73 points is totally doable! You're well in the game, although leader's team seems pretty strong, so it's hard to catch him.

Still, I'm currently some 150 points off the leader of my minileague who has immense team and I still think I can well beat him. Maybe I'm just overly optimistic, but being the only one with wildcard in the pocket gives me quite a differential. 😉

      From The Journal:

"Newcastle United hope to push through a loan move for striker Luuk de Jong in time to hand him a debut at Norwich a week today.

Despite claims from across the Channel of an agreement being reached for long-term United target Remy Cabella, The Journal understands that De Jong remains the priority target and their attention will be focused on clinching a deal for the Borussia Mönchengladbach forward in the next seven days.

Terms have been agreed for the switch but the German club – who want to secure a replacement before allowing him to leave – are looking for more assurances from Newcastle before sanctioning the deal. Those hurdles should be cleared in the next seven days, which would provide United boss Alan Pardew with a timely boost ahead of a run of fixtures that could define the Magpies’ campaign."

The usual contradictory stories coming out of France. Blanc would like him, I think, but it's as yet unclear whether Cabaye would be happy to risk spending the rest of the season on the bench ahead of the World Cup.

The move would make much more sense for all concerned if it happened in the summer, but sense has little to do with PSG since the new infl ux of casg.

He wouldn't be benched, for sure.

The only problem is that Newcastle wants Cabella to replace him and Montpellier is unwilling to let go before Summer.

I think it makes much more sense now, Cabaye is one of the few top players who could still play CL for their new teams, so he's obviously very high in all club's papers this January.

From Montpellier's side, I don't really understand what sense it makes to agree on a summer deal now.

Maybe if it's a very good deal with a lot of money, it is better to take it now than see a top player leaving for peanuts again.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

      What to do with Coleman?

After leaving the pitch early last night with a suspected hamstring injury a huge question mark has appeared over one of the game’s top performers.

Already 12,000 of his owners have dumped him.

If you own him what is your strategy considering many will have a large sum of money tied up in the Everton defender, who has shot up in price from £5m to £6.8m?

1-3 week injury – this offers a temptation to keep. His fixtures are not strong over the next three matches. But can you afford to leave him on the bench, when Chelsea and Arsenal defenders in particular look so reliable.

4-6 week - A price drop over this period is inevitable. But will there be some tempted to keep?

6 week plus – Surely its time to move on.

If it's less than 4 I keep, as I got him for 5.1. If it is more, I think I can gain more points even in the long run by using that value to get someone who actually gains me points.

I'm in the 4-6 week camp I think. Any less and I'll hang on. Unless his price is crashing .3 a week.

Wait and see, no need to get rid unless you have no value change on him and even then only if he's out for over two weeks.

He's worth 5.9 to me so I won't drop him lightly but my wildcard is currently active so there's plenty of leeway for tinkering. Desperately hoping for some definite news one way or the other before his first price drop.

              Ditto.

It is a wait and see - but Cahill looks good value and it may be the time to get a Chelsea guy in.

I was shocked that Clyne didn't feature Sat - but Parr gave me a cleanie which was fortunate. Again if Clyne is out on Saturday I'm happy for Parr to fill in but then I will have to look at another option like Shaw. Clyne - Cahill drains me of cash which I like to get handy for midfield punts.

Chester has been in since day 1 - always a likely 3rd sub for two points average bar injury and will change only a last resort

Waiting one week, if he's not back for Villa he's gone. Was tempted to off him in the WC but played it safe, this could be the trigger as even with a 6.0 SV there's potentially better options.

Johnson, Cabaye I suspect are the only two of these that will rise 0.2 in this gameweek. But Tuesday night deadlines are notoriously bad for minimal double rises as the Friday rush we get with weekend GWs doesn't translate to a 'Monday rush' for midweek ones. I wouldn't be surprised if they both leave their second rises to Tuesday night.

If Coleman is confirmed out for say three weeks is this a great opportunity to differentiate?

Many will hold afraid to lose value and bench him.
