Our last glance at the Gameweek gone by assesses Sunderland’s flying winger and turns our attentions to north London, where Tottenham’s attack and Arsenal’s lack of offensive consistency are threatening to shape our Fantasy plans:

The Player

Having racked up a 22-point haul in the previous Gameweek as Sunderland swept aside fellow strugglers Fulham, Adam Johnson was a man in form ahead of the Wearsiders home clash against Southampton. Midway through the first-half, the Black Cats looked dead and buried after their visitors swept into an early two-goal advantage but the former Man City wide man once again came to the rescue to underline the fact that, if his side are to beat the drop, he’s going to have a significant say in the matter.

As Fantasy managers know, there’s a fine line between chasing last week’s points and snapping up a player in form but, in Johnson’s case, it’s becoming increasingly obvious the latter applies. Currently sitting at 6.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) – 0.5 less than his starting price – the wide man’s goal, assist and maximum bonus in Saturday lunchtime’s stalemate took his tally to 35 points in just two appearances.

What seems remarkable is that Johnson had started only one of the previous eight Gameweeks under Gus Poyet – and also found the net on that occasion, too. For whatever reason, he seemed to have drifted onto the periphery but is now firmly established as a key figure on the right of the Black Cats’ front three, with his manager lavishing praise on his recent performances.

Whilst his next four away trips (new, mcy, ars, liv) are a little unappealing, Johnson’s remaining home games more than balance the weight in his favour. With Stoke, Hull, West Brom, Palace, West Ham, Cardiff and Swansea constituting seven of the final eight visitors to the Stadium of Light, Poyet could barely wish for a kinder run of games. Bearing in mind Sunderland have already got the better of City, Chelsea and United in front of their own fans, it seems a near-certainty that Saturday’s exploits won’t be the last time Johnson will be making the Fantasy headlines before the season is out.

The Team

A 3-1 win at Swansea took Tottenham’s record to five wins and a draw under Tim Sherwood as the north London club continue to impress as an attacking force. Both Emmanuel Adebayor and Christian Eriksen have been paramount to their turnaround in fortunes and, as winter wildcards continue to be wielded, have deservedly earned plenty of interest on the back of a string of consistent performances.

Sherwood’s decision to switch from 4-4-2 to a 4-2-3-1, with Eriksen tucked in behind the Togo international, didn’t deter the in-form duo last Sunday. Adebayor’s 13-point haul at the Liberty took his tally to 49 points in six (8.2 points per game) since the departure of Andre Villas-Boas and makes a mockery of the Portuguese’s decision to hand him a single sub appearance in the first 16 Gameweeks. Eriksen has earned 42 points (7 ppg) over the same period as Sherwood’s offensive approach allows him to operate with a freedom never afforded under the previous manager.

At 7.8 and 7.3 respectively, it’s hard to overlook such value for money, with the pair also offering a real consistency – Adebayor has returns in five of six, whilst Eriksen has produced the goods four times over the same period. Furthermore, Spurs have now scored 14 times in those six matches under Sherwood – previously, they had produced a paltry 15 in 15 for Villas-Boas.

The signs seem encouraging, then, though the upcoming schedule is perhaps enough to persuade many to either look elsewhere or at least limit their level of immediate investment. Home clashes against City and Everton, with a trip to Hull sandwiched in between, offer Sherwood’s side a stiff test over the short-term as that familiar Fantasy quandary of form against fixtures prepares to collide.

The Talking Point

Whilst the majority of top-flight sides can rely on one or two talents to produce the goods on a near-regular basis, Arsenal, on the other hand, are becoming a real source of Fantasy frustration as the season unfolds. The league leaders have notched 20 fewer goals than City, for example, and whilst the rest of the top four boast consistent performers such as Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure, Eden Hazard, Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Steven Gerrard, the Gunners have shared the points around in recent weeks.

The loss of both Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey has left us hoping Mesut Ozil and/or Olivier Giroud can step up. Neither has delivered with any regularity, though – the German has mustered a single assist in five, whilst Giroud, despite being nailed-on as the lone striker, has netted in just three of his last 16 league appearances.

Luckily for the Gunners, others have improved of late. Jack Wilshere has produced attacking returns in each of his last three now, whilst Santi Cazorla’s 16-point haul against Fulham also highlighted the fact that Arsene Wenger’s side are not solely reliant on one or two individuals to make the difference – indeed, the Arsenal manager has acknowledged this last weekend, going on to say:

“It’s the best thing that can happen to us, because if you depend on one player you think you have to put him in cotton wool to keep him fit. For us to know everyone can score and that someone like Ramsey, who is a goalscorer, is not playing at the moment, and Arteta, who can get us a goal as well but is not playing, that is very positive.”

Ozil’s decline has led to significant sales over the last few days. At 10.1 in FPL, the German’s value has been questioned by many, with his departure from Fantasy squads freeing up the cash to splash on fit-again Sergio Aguero. With Walcott out of the picture until next season, Ramsey’s imminent return is bound to see him return to our squads, though a possible role on the right in Walcott’s absence may well dent the Welshman’s appeal for the run-in. Given that Per Mertesacker, with 106 points, is one behind Giroud and only four off Ozil’s 110, some are eyeing up the prospect of investing in the Gunners backline alone, with their increasingly resilient displays making the Arsenal defence far more effective Fantasy options right now.

Man U need to go all out to sign Mata, it would give everyone a much needed boost in the same way Ozil did at Arsenal. He would be better than Ozil too 😉

Afternoon lads, opinions on my WC team:

    Boruc Davis

    Coleman Kos Azpilicueta Ward Chester

    Hazard Ramsey Lallana Januzaj Mutch

    Suarez Aguero Rooney

    0.1m in the bank

I know midfield looks a bit light but the front 3 make up for it, the alternative is downgrading rooney to say benteke/giroud and upgrading but what do you think?

does anyone else have difficulty in letting players go that have served you well? the transfers i have in mind as part of my WC (Mert & Eriksen out and getting Kos & Adebayor in amongst others) make sense. I got Mert at 5.5 and can sell at 6.1. Getting Ade in up front means I can have Cazorla, Silva & Hazard in my midfield. Yet I am holding off doing it for nothing other than apparent sentiment! I'm just focusing on the players I have to have and fitting everyone else around them.

Def keep Aguero. And Yaya is also a very strong pick. There are a lot of relatively cheap and decent mids around to fill up midfields.
Januzaj, Sterling, Mutch... are v. cheap.
Eriksen, Ramsey, Lallana, Cabaye (if he stays) in the mid-price bracket.

Gary Neville has come out and said that Mata won't suit United and i agree with him. Where will he play? On the right or left of a 4-2-3-1?
We tried to play him wide in that formation at Chelsea and as a Chelsea fan i can tell you that he works best when played through the centre in a free role where he can drop deep to get the ball amd pick out passes and also move into channels and between the opponents defence and midfield. He is just not as effective on the right or left. Even if united shift to that formation they will still have to play Rooney in the centre and RVP on top. So i can't see Mata being a saviour for united.
Further, united have traditionally played a 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 with fast wingers who cross a lot and anyone can see that Mata won't be best suited to that.
What do the United fans think?

Moyes will slowly switch to a 4-2-3-1. In fact he's been doing it already. Mata is better through the middle ofc, but he is still great out wide. He'd work very well as a RW. Also, Rooney could be leaving in summer

Changing the system will be the first step to fit Mata in but do you think he will be as effective on the right or left as he has been for us the last 2 seasons playing in the centre. The only way i can see him being good is by rotating the 3 players behind the striker like we did during RDM's time with Oscar, Hazard and Mata switching positions.

Think he's a top player and can help United a lot.
      RVP
      Mata Rooney Januzaj
      Carrick Cleverley/Jones

doesn't look bad. Could also do Mata Kagawa Rooney.

Ronaldo isn't a wide player and did well at United. But Neville is a legend.

This is where buying Coleman at 5m is actually a pain in the a*s.

Lukaku still first on the chopping board i think. No-one would pass him the ball last night!
Does anyone think he could repeat his derby heroics at Anfield?

    Ola amigos,
I've got 2 free transfers, 1.4 M£ in the bank and still haven't used my winter wildcard.
I was wondering if it was worth it to save my wildcard for the next round using my 2 FT's now and see if anything interesting happens in these latter stages of the transfer market; the only thing is I can't put a touch on where my weaknesses lie at the moment and I'd like some advise. I guess Mignolet could be replaced with either a cheaper or similarly priced alternative but in the long run I want to work Aguero in for Lukaku and probably get a fresher set of legs than Giroud.
So what to do, what to do...

    My team:

    Mignolet - Marshall
    Mertesacker - Coleman - D. Santon - Ward - Whittaker
    Hazard (V)- Y. Touré - Cabaye - Henderson - Januzaj
    Giroud - Suárez (C) - Lukaku

I've had Yaya since GW 2 so I'm rather reluctant getting rid of him, I'd only get 9.3 for the transfer.

Ola amigo, your team looks good, as you say there are a couple changes to make but nothing too drastic, the decision you need to make is how much are you prepared for the players you want to bring in to rise in price before you finally get them? Aguero being a prime suspect.

        Good point Mr. Dog, would:
        Giroud -> Jay Rodriguez
        Lukaku -> Aguero
be something of your interest? Rodriguez would then be a temporary solution until I wildcard next week.

I don't like Swansea atm -which rules Bony out

Sturridge is a little too expensive

Have a feeling ML leader will get Adebayor which rules him out

    Nolan is cheaper than Carroll

    Not going near Lukaku again

Not many options left for my 3rd striker, Benteke, your time has almost arrived.

Nolan is a "shinner" - it is luck or nothing. Lukaku is a MUCH better option than Bentekke.

You need to think about Eto'o and Dzeko.

It looks good but I'm tempted to go with 3 biggies and 2 cheap (Kos, Terry and Coleman)

The main issue with that rotation is that both Newcastle and Villa seems to keep more clean sheets away.

If Coleman is out for a few weeks I may re-think

Goal attempts in the box conceded is always the big one..(along with fixtures)..click that column and you have your best picks for clean sheets and worst pick..and it matches...Good table Doosra..add in the shots conceded outside the box as well..it matters..and then you will see the team who are clear stand out leaders for shots conceded..and it's not good news for your lot.
