Once again, there’s plenty for Fantasy managers to ponder as we head towards next Tuesday’s deadline. Here are the scenarios and line-ups we’re keeping an eye on this time around:

Mirallas’ Form in the Middle
Since moving to the role in “the hole”, the Belgian’s attacking potential has taken a turn for the better. With Ross Barkley stuck in the Toffees treatment room with a toe injury, Mirallas has notched in back-to-back league games for the first time this term and is finally beginning to justify our show of pre-season faith ahead of the Merseyside derby at Anfield . Owners of the misfiring Romelu Lukaku are looking for a way out in order to free up a space in our three-man frontlines but, with Villa, Palace and West Ham rolling up to Goodison in three of the subsequent five, investment in the Toffees’ attack still looks a viable tactic. If Mirallas impresses against Liverpool, he may find himself subject to increased investment as a midfield option, allowing Lukaku owners to jump ship.

Vertonghen’s Impact on the Spurs Back-Four
Having trained with the Tottenham first-team all week, the Belgian played 60 minutes of a behind-closed-doors friendly and is set to return to action for Wednesday’s home clash with City. Whilst a clean sheet isn’t expected, Vertonghen’s comeback is at least likely to indicate the central defensive pecking order under Tim Sherwood – Vlad Chiriches and Michael Dawson have played every minute in the heart of the back-four since the departure of Andre Villas-Boas but one of the pair are set to drop out as Vertonghen reclaims his starting berth. With Younes Kaboul, Sandro and Paulinho also back in action on Thursday, we may get a better gauge of Sherwood’s preferred first-team next midweek.

Johnson’s Right-Back Replacement
Ruled out “indefinitely” by Brendan Rodgers after struggling to overcome a series of injuries, the defender’s absence opens the door for a cut-price option at Liverpool. Granted, the Reds have hardly been the most resilient side but, with Kolo Toure lacking the mobility required to be utilised efficiently at full-back, fit-again Jon Flanagan (4.3) and Martin Kelly (4.1) are set to battle it out for a regular role in Johnson’s absence and hand Fantasy managers another budget regular.

Sturridge’s Role for the Reds
Daniel Sturridge’s return to the Liverpool starting line-up saw Brendan Rodgers change formation in order to accommodate the fit-again forward last weekend. Liverpool started with a 4-4-2 against Villa but, after being outplayed in the middle of the park in the first 45 minutes, the Reds boss switched to a 4-3-3 to wrestle back control of the game. If Rodgers continues with a lone forward system, Sturridge may find himself out on the flank against Everton instead of alongside Luis Suarez through the centre – such a scenario may see some reassess his acquisition, with plenty of forward alternatives stepping up right now.

Mata’s Impact on the United XI
With Jose Mourinho confirming Juan Mata is set for a medical at United earlier this lunchtime, the Spaniard’s imminent arrival at Old Trafford will hand Fantasy managers an immediate chance to freshen up their five-man midfields. Initially, though, injuries may determine where Mata is utilised – if Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie are still absent for the visit of Cardiff, the new boy is likely to be handed the role in “the hole” behind Danny Welbeck, thus affecting Adnan Januzaj’s position within David Moyes’ starting XI. Given that the teenager has started seven of the last eight, Moyes may even look to ease the pressure for risk of burn-out, thus potentially depriving us of a budget midfield option, with the Spaniard tasked with providing the creativity instead.

Jose’s Teamsheet
Mata’s expected departure and Fernando Torres’s knee injury has resulted in increased Fantasy interest in Willian and Samuel Eto’o over the last few days. Willian has now started six of the last eight and, while the arrival of Mohamed Salah ensures the competition for places on the flanks remains just as intense, the 7.5-priced (0.4% owned) Brazilian’s recent displays suggest he remains in the driving seat. Eto’o’s hat-trick against United also brings him onto our radars at a time when that third forward slot looks more crucial than ever. Certainly, his chances of another start look good, bearing in mind Demba Ba has started just twice all season for the Blues – if he gets the nod against West Ham next Wednesday, his 1% ownership could also make the 8.2-priced Cameroon international the ultimate of differentials.

Ozil and Giroud against the Saints
Subject to substantial sales over the last few days, both may be on their last chance for many a Fantasy manager. With a single assist in five, Ozil has been sold on by over 55,000 Fantasy Premier League managers – more than any midfielder – with team-mates Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla offering in-form alternatives amongst Arsene Wenger’s side. Giroud, meanwhile, is third most unpopular forward this week, with over 36,000 parting company in light of a record which has seen him score in just four of his last 16 league appearances. The duo’s prospects are boosted by the news that Dejan Lovren is out for Southampton at St Mary’s – many may choose to hold as a result of the Croatian’s absence, but if the Gunners duo blank again, the exodus may pick up pace.

Chester’s Defensive Replacement
A cut-price favourite around these parts, the Hull centre-half is sidelined for “at least six weeks” after limping out of last week’s loss at Norwich with his second hamstring injury of the season. Fantasy managers still holding winter wildcards may look for a cheap alternative route into Hull’s backline ahead of a kind run of matches which sees Steve Bruce’s side travel to Palace, Sunderland, West Ham and Cardiff and play host to Southampton and Newcastle in the next seven Gameweeks. Alex Bruce, with eight starts in the last nine, looks an obvious alternative at 3.9, though the likes of Paul McShane and Abdoulaye Faye (3.9 and 3.8) could come into contention as the Tigers boss looks to his fringe players to step up.

A simple A or B but I've listed my whole team as I feel it's relevant.

    Boruc, Mannone
    Terry, Coleman, Koscielny, Kolorov, XXX
    Hazard, Toure, Cabaye, Noone, XXX
    Suarez, Aguero, XXX

    A) Mertesacker, Johnson, Adebayor
    B) Bruce, Eriksen, Sturridge

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Terry>Azpilicueta. Don't want to be benching that much each week so I would also do Kolarov to Bruce and get Ward in defence. That means you can get Lallana in midfield who would be my pick, and you can get Sturridge up front, but to save cash and doubling up I would get Adebayor.

It's tough working out where to allocate it. I know I should sell Mertesacker but I have so much value tied up in him it feels wrong to sell.
I'm just not convinced of how many extra points Eriksen and Sturridge will bring over Johnson and Adebayor, especially over the next three fixtures.

Your squad has a bunch of the high ownership / non-differentials on it, so my answer depends on whether you are comfortably ahead in you ML or actively chasing.

AJ +Ade is higher risk/reward potentially but may need to plan to unload when/if form changes.

Eriksen+Studge has high nailed-on-ness and high expected PPG and can likely carry you through end of season but studge is a consistent grinder rather than streaky and explosive.

Regardless, you already have 4 premium defenders so I wouldn't buy Mert as you need bench fodder. And with such a high TV, you will also always have a fairly valuable player on the bench in either scenario -> instead press your money advantage and downgrade somewhere to make 3rd striker Rooney or a 3rd big hitter in mids like Silva or Caz imo.

Thanks for the long reply. I' actually behind in my work ML by 1 point but should comfortably win it looking at my rival's team. I'm just about clinging to the top 10k and it would be nice to finish inside it.
I'm not currently convinced by any other premium midfielders. Silva is scoring poorly, Arsenal players take turns exploding and then going quiet, It's way too early for Mata. If I was to get anyone it would probably be Oscar.
Sturridge gets good points normally but may be better in three week's time. I wouldn't want to buy mertesacker but I bought him at £5.5m so a bit worried about letting him go in case I ever need him back. There is a good chance that I will want either Mata or Rooney so you make a good point about having a financial set up that incorporates them more easily.

I thought everyone would say B but I'm quite attached to A.
Money doesn't always mean more points, Adebayor is probably level or just above Eriksen and Johnson has an easy next 3 compared to Sturridge who plays Everton and Arsenal.
Thanks for your replies - maybe I should be making the change!

I originally considered doing this but last week has changed my mind. I think i'm going to keep Toure and hope he continues to defy statistics. To be fair he's an incredibly strong player and comes into his element when teams are tired in the last 20 mins which is why he always seems to get late points.

with Vorm they kept 5 in 13

within that 13 you had United, Spurs, Pool and Arsenal, so that's acceptable to have conceeded. That makes it 5 in 11, so almost 1 every other game

            With Tremmel it's 1 in 9

People are writing Salah off as a bench fodder for us. But if he signs, he will be the only one in our squad who can play as an out and out winger which we have never had.
I'm not saying he would be good as a FPL prospect but in footballing terms he can give us a new style of play to turn to as plan B.
And from what i have seen of him, he does track back and is the sort of winger mou would like to have. And he can also play in the centre if required

Salah can get to the byline and put crosses in from there.
Most probably he will be bench fodder forever and then sold on..

thats not the point. Wenger has maintained a stance that everyone should play the same teams. including scrapping the jan window, the summer window ending before the season starts and loan player playong their parent clubs. using Chelsea as an example, they dont play Man U with Mata, they play Everton without Lukaku, and Liverpool without Moses (although this doesnt make much difference). it is a valid point, and not at all similar to RVP.

I agree that the January Transfer window should be scrapped. Chelsea have the squad to loan / sell these players. Arsenal have to play United with Mata but they could strengthen their own squad to compete. Chelsea have done nothing wrong here.

Who cares? The rules allow you to use the transfer window and loan deals intelligently. Mourinho is doing it. Nobody prevented Wenger from loaning Bendtner to Everton.

He is using this incident as an example for what he thinks need changing. Not every team can affird to pay £20m for a striker, bench him
and then just loan him out.
And Wengrt giving his opinion on a matter that he was asked about certainly does not give Mourinho the right to insult him. Especially when Mou spent the last year at Real Madrid sulking.
People on England seem to love Mou because hes provocative, but in reality he is just a bitter, disrespectful and rude individual.

Arsenal have made many winter signings, but Arshavin wasn't playing in the same league and his signing wasn't from one team that would undermine their direct competitors chances.

      Good strategic move by Mourinho.
This has probably been in the plans for weeks, but notice how it didn't happen before Chelsea played United last gw?
Wenger, Pellegrino and others look at the season as a 38 round competition. They think it unfair that one league competitor strengthen another, before the other teams have had their "second leg" of the competition.
An absurd example would be if , after Chelsea played United, they sold Hazard, Mata, Oscar, Terry, Lampard to United, so that United could beat City and Arsenal.

Fair points, but the points that can be gained from a top team with easy game at home, e.g .this week chelsea have got west ham at home, 6-0 maybe. But the following week away at man city, so could swap out oscar with ozil / caz as arsenal have crystal palace at home. could be worth 30ish points over these two game.
