Some of the Fantasy Football Scout community around the globe were suffering from bleary eyes this week, as they looked to eek out an advantage from the early teamsheet announcements ahead of Gameweek 23. We look back on the barmy events from Tuesday night, along with recent discussions on replacement strikers in the light of Aguero’s hamstring twang, and the chatter on shedding the big-money stoppers and freshening up our defences with some budget buys. As always, we also reserve time to call in on the latest community tournaments.

The Hottest Topics

Sergio Aguero’s injury during City’s victory at Spurs left many Wildcard teams in tatters as the community hurriedly looked to assess alternative striking options. Christina in his Kunundrum post believes that, with a key Champions League clash with Barcelona and FA Cup tie with Chelsea on the horizon, Aguero looks unlikely to be risked for the forthcoming league outings with Norwich, Sunderland and Stoke. Team-mate, Edin Dzeko was among the options canvassed as a replacement, with Wild Demel, in particular, cheerleading for the Bosnian. Evs, meanwhile, was contemplating a dramatic points hit to bring in Robin van Persie and Jay Rodriguez for his crocked strike pairing of Aguero and Romelu Lukaku.

In the light of this debate, we enquired whether you considered van Persie’s £13.6m price-tag as less of an obstacle with Aguero off the scene.

While attacking options dominated our thinking, we also dedicated some quality time to sprucing up our defences. Intransigent2 asked whether expensive defenders really are worth their hefty price tag. Amongst the arguments presented, he put forward the theory that Laurent Koscielny and Bacary Sagna provided far greater value than their premium-priced colleague, Per Mertesacker.

On a similar theme, Dino argued that the woeful defensive away form of teams offering the high-roller defenders makes it unviable to invest in the likes of John Terry, Vincent Kompany and Per Mertesacker. He points to Arsenal’s record, with just three of their 11 clean sheets away from home, as a prime example of how they can fail us.

Reckoner led the charge to find a cheap replacements at the back. He suggested that the returning West Ham centre back Winston Reid has all the ingredients to warrant our attention. West Ham’s kind run of fixtures has to be a factor. The appropriately named Guy Demel’s Shaved Head offered a nuts and bolts guide to West Ham’s key assets. Reid also tops his shopping list, as does the midfield pair of Mark Noble and Kevin Nolan. Given the latter’s returns on Saturday, we should perhaps pay attention.

Gameweek 23’s deadline was unique in that we had a view on half the teamsheets. This presented some of our overseas community members with the tough task of having to stay awake or set the alarm for the 6:45pm GMT team sheet announcements. We surveyed those looking to hit the caffeine, with Torres Magic setting his alarm for 5:45am at his Sydney, Australia, home. Meanwhile, it was a late night for India-based Siva Mohan, as the teamsheets emerged at 12:15am his time.

The Community Tournaments

OliDooley was top following Gameweek 23 in In Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing league, with 20 managers knocked out and 206 now remaining. Triggerlips and Cheeseoid are in the lead in the “Millionaire Club”, where currently 160 live to fight on. Qubit (The Irregular) leads the “After Xmas League” and Unbelievable Tek-kers leads the seeding (49th overall) for both “FPL Open” and “Elite 64”, with Koneheads in hot pursuit. For more details about Torres Magic’s leagues click here.

Going into Gameweek 24, that chap Jonty managed the triple whammy of securing top spot in the FFS “Old Farts Club league”, the FFS Moderators and Contributors league and one of In Tommy We Trust’s All Things FPL Leagues. Other league leaders in Tommy’s competition are Evs, Bootsy, Billy Ketsu, Jambo16 and Koneheads.

Meanwhile, DonTheSpecial One continued to lead the “Puffinboy Memorial Cup”, named after one of this website’s first and much-missed community posters.

In the Iron Man competition, for those taking part in multiple games, there has been little change, I’ve clung to the lead in the Fantasy Premier League part of the competition, while Gigging Order and In Like Flynn continue to top the competition’s Sky Sports and Metro leagues respectively.

In HeelsOverHead’s Worst To First – 2 Million + Club, for teams with an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five game weeks, Teltzham Hotspurs continued in first place going into Gameweek 24 with an incredible rank of 12,195. Five teams are now in the top 100,000 places.

The FFS UEFA group are back with a new competition for the second half of the season, featuring the top managers from their European leagues, which ran during the first half of the season. Their Champions League-style tournament gets under way this weekend and features their FA Cup winner Ryan and last season’s Champions League victor MJ6987.

Also, a reminder that another popular competition organiser, The Long and Winding Road, begin their epic 128 player FA Cup (of Tea) in Gameweek 25. Among key clashes will be Doosra against Giggs Boson and Kings of Lyon versus The Tinkerman. The full fixture list can be found here.

You might be better off selling Suarez with the form Sturridge is in at the moment.

Yeah I'm just illustrating the point that it isn't a good idea to sell Sturridge. Since he's come back from injury he has outscored Suarez.

Yeah I wouldn't get RVP. Injuries have come back to him this season and he isn't getting any younger. Personally I think Rooney will be the better prospect because United can ill afford to be without him.

Anyone care to have a look , I'm having a total mare and would appreciate some feedback , current rank 320k , lots of reds and can't really seem to get a decent run going ,

    http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/743378/history/

    Boruc / KD
    Mert / Coalman / Parr / Burner / Bruce
    Silva / Haz / Ozil / Mata / jan
    Suarez / Negredo / jrod.

My next few moves entail jan / Ozil / def out working towards a gw28 player ie , Bacuna / azpi / mid
Any feedback much appreciated , thanks.

Thats actually 1 of the main reasons I didnt go with that GK pairing. Thought it might be too restrictive given Soton's nice games.

Dropping Ozil for a cheaper mid is definitely the way to go. Eriksen?

A chelsea defender would be a good start. An Ozil downgrade could be an option as well but I'm not entirely sure who you should get there, perhaps Eriksen? Januzaj -> Snoddy would be a good bet as well as he will cover you during the blank GW's.

        Mm interesting ,
What about a hit to remove Kelvin Davis ?
ie : Ozil / KD > Lallana / Czech OR Mannone and I'm ready for the dgw with Sunderland ?
I'm also thinking : jrod / Ozil > Dzeko / Lallana but that gives me a double blank in 28 ,
A lot of me thinks it's Lallana I needed every way I turn (Aj blank) and KD seems to be in my way , maybe I should save till 2ft but then I'm missing all the Chelsea cs in the meantime !

Picking the right third striker (replacing Adebayor) to go with Suarez and Sturridge is doing my head in!

Best "third strikers" to own right now:

    1) Dzeko: (8.5/10)
+ Plays for the most attacking team in the league
    + proven goalscorer
    - could be rotated anytime
    - gw 28 blank

    2) Benteke:
    + In great form
    + Focal point of Villa
    + On penalties
    - Villa can be inconsistent

    3) Lambert
+ Him and Southampton both playing very well
    + On pens
    + Lovely fixtures.
    - slight rotation risk

    4) JROD:
+ Him and Southampton both playing very well
    + Lovely fixtures.
    + Great Value
    - No set pieces/pens

Feel free to add more options!

the problem with freeing up funds is that you will spend them and then dzeko will get benched and you'll need a hit to get him out. I went rooney with a mid downgrade. Although he got 1 point i was happy with his attacking intent despite playing deep

Nothing screaming out at me. i.e. no injuries:

    A) Change Kolorov for someone that actually keep CS's and is cheaper, perhaps SOU and always play Mannone and with GW28 blank in mind.
    B) Switch Giroud > JRod - great fixtures and frees up funds to get YaYa or Terry AND RVP in later weeks.
    C) Giroud > RVP

    Full team:
    Boruc/Mannone
    Coleman, Kolorov, Ward, Chester, Kos
    Lallana, AJ, Hazard, Silva, Noone
    Dzeko, Giroud, Suarez

Leaning towards keeping Sturridge and ignoring RVP

    1) Blank in few weeks
    2) would cost more to buy Sturridge back
    3) If Evans out for a while would be better use of a free to remove him instead
    4) Moyes

    Reason to buy RVP

    1) Fear of missing out if he goes mental Vs Fulham

Conclusion. Logic Says keep Sturridge , emotion says get RVP

Yeah I agree. Although it entirely depends on the teams in question. Some are just rubbish when they play away from home. The ideal is of course to have home/away rotation with teams that also alternate easy/hard fixtures.

    GW26: Bony -> Sturridge

    - > getting 2 nailed on in form players with good fixtures. No GW28 blank either.

Currently have B > A > C. Yaya being nailed on with pens for a free scoring City playing (nor, SUN, STO) is mighty tempting. Also, with Osvaldo gone I think Ricky is nailed on also.

    I was having Sun/Wham/CPL rotation with Bardsley/Reid/Mariappa.

If I do take Mariappa out, I think I'll get one of Chico or Williams.

I really can't see us getting torn apart, but I can see a Suarez goal.

Suarez(c), Hazard(v) most probably the way i'll go. Although I don't like this as an Arsenal fan! 🙂

Suarez captain. I am hoping that would be a differential, while others move away to RVP.

I've got RVP. Still got Suarez (c). He's truly a force to be reckoned with at home.

Yeah, I'm between Suarez and Hazard. Probably a late call required. Thoughts on my A, B or C above Dogba?

Well C is tempting, but United have not been setting the world on fire in front of goal. For a hit that seems too risky for me and I'd prefer B. Sturridge has really been an amazing FPL asset since joining LFC.

I'm actually torn between A) and B) - penos and set pieces (plus the MCY factor) are tempting me.....

Won't you have a problem in GW28 if you take in Yaya?

Should be ok as I have no MUN, SUN or WBA players. Depending on whether I WC in GW29 I would either:

                i) use 2 freebies in GW28 and get a strong 11 out (WCing in GW29), or

ii) bench 3 MCY players in GW28 and then use 2 freebies in GW29 (if saving the WC)

No mate. Not even considering taking the armband off Suarez.

The only other player I would be willing to risk the captaincy on is injured.

Depends, if you have Boruc in goal I'd play Ward to spread the risk.

I'd wager no, since Jovetic is still working on his match fitness.

more than likely, at that price playing for the best team in the league, youd have to be stupid not to put him in 😛

I would love to have Dzeko in my team but there is this Jovetic factor. Dzeko&Negredo pairing doesnt work imo.
