A solitary strike from Branislav Ivanovic is enough to clinch the points for Chelsea at the Etihad. Jose Mourinho’s defence stands firm as City’s 100% home record comes to an end without the services of the stricken Sergio Aguero:

Blues Backline Defies the Etihad
In spite of conceding just two goals in their previous seven league fixtures, Chelsea rolled up to the Etihad as underdogs last night. With the hamstrung Sergio Aguero sitting in the stands and Fernandinho’s agility missing in central midfield, Jose Mourinho’s side were able to repel an attack that had hit Arsenal and Spurs for six and stuck four past United in front of their own fans. Branislav Ivanovic’s first goal since Gameweek 1 earned the Serbian a 14-point haul, though it’s perhaps debatable whether many of his owners were confident enough to hand him a slot in their starting XI.

Having passed the toughest test of all now, Mourinho’s defenders have shown we can rely on them regardless of fixture difficulty. At a time where Arsenal are set to play six of the current top seven over the next nine Gameweeks, doubling up on Chelsea’s backline looks a very viable tactic and, whilst John Terry and Gary Cahill also offer a goal threat, Cesar Azpilicueta has now started 13 of the last 14 Gameweeks and, at 5.3, may appeal to those with limited finances.

Oscar Benched in Tactical Reshuffle
Whilst there’s no doubt the Brazilian is Jose Mourinho’s preferred choice for the role in “the hole” behind a lone striker, it’s clear that his manager will, at times, sacrifice him for the sake of the team. With David Luiz partnered by Nemanja Matic in the double-pivot, Mourinho shifted the versatile Ramires onto the right of the midfield three and opted for Willian behind Samuel Eto’o as Oscar dropped to the bench. Willian has now started seven of the last nine, whilst Oscar has featured in the first XI on five of those occasions after returning from injury. Games against Newcastle and West Brom next week are likely to see the playmaker reinstalled to the first-team after a mere eight-minute appearance last night but, at a time when so many mid-price midfielders are producing the points, many will feel they cannot afford to have an 8.9-priced asset under the risk of rotation.

Negredo‘s Game Time a Worry
The Spaniard returned to the City first-team after missing out against Tottenham with a shoulder complaint. Snapped up by over 25,000 Fantasy managers as a result of Aguero’s hamstring injury, Negredo left his 11% owners thoroughly frustrated after failing to score at the Etihad for only the second time in his last eight home starts. More concerning was Pellegrini’s decision to sub the former Sevilla forward off with just 56 minutes on the clock as Stevan Jovetic got the nod to partner Edin Dzeko for the remainder of the game – after the match, the City boss admitted Negredo is not yet 100% after his recent shoulder complaint. Negredo has now managed 90 minutes just once in the last seven Gameweeks, whilst Dzeko has played the entire match in four of the previous five now, suggesting the Bosnian looks far more reliable to last from start to finish under Pellegrini at the moment.

Etihad Resilience Fading
Last night’s result also continued a run of form which has seen City struggle to keep out their opponents at home. Pellegrini’s side racked up five clean sheets in their first seven at the Etihad and conceded just twice – over the subsequent five, they’ve registered a single shut-out (against Palace) and shipped seven goals. As the Chilean plots to recover from Monday evening’s setback, he’ll be buoyed by City’s remaining visitors – Sunderland, Stoke and Villa roll up in the next five and, with Fulham, Southampton, West Brom and West Ham all yet to arrive, those owning City defenders will be happy to hold in the meantime.

I went Cahill today. BPS magnet, goal threat. If Ivan wouldn't of scored he would have got none (or maybe 1) BP. Factor in the 0.2 difference and it's an easy call

I went with my gut. Ivan had been out for a while so had a good rest after inital start to season, but Mou likes him so I got him on WC a few weeks back - makes a nice dif and I think less prone to rotation.

Just in time to see if I manage to get last post for this article....it was close, but not quite - so repost!

    Azpli or Cahill?

Azpli seems more nailed on to start every game and always when I try to be smart and take the more expensive one, it ends up being just waste of money.
One bonus here and there doesn't matter, but Cahill is a goalthreat...

amazing how many times people don't look.
but for your answer i would choose cahill.
said near end of last article he has taken on ivan role from last year at corners where he is target.
Plus the number of headed clearance he makes helps with baps.
azpi just doesnt seem to be involved in atttacks, and he sits back at corners and free kicks.
not sure how europe will impact on game time of him either.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Best back line over the next four

With Arsenal and Sunderland’s fixtures taking a tumble and Villa, Tottenham, Chelsea, Cardiff and Southampton’s fixtures looking strong in the weeks ahead I thought it a good time to look at the best back line for the next four gameweeks.

    Villa – Vlaar (injury risk)

Tottenham – Vertonghen is very tempting. Walker offers similar secutiry of starts

Chelsea – take your pick from Terry, Cahill, Azpi and Ivan….all offer solid clean sheet, bonus and even goal/assist potential. I think one of this quartet is key over the next four.

Cardiff – Caulker still looks the best bet. I’m not convinced even with the fixtures that they will get many clean sheets with their focus on attack.

Southampton – Boruc looks near essential. Shaw and Fonte the most secure options here.

Anyone else you think worth considering? ManC perhaps have three great fixtures then a blank. West Ham on paper have great fixtures, but Norwich and Southampton could prove tricky.

Aston Villa: Baker at 3.9 is a great bargain.
Tottenham: Dawson is nailed on and only at 5.2
Cardiff: Bottom of the league, I would avoid.
Southampton: I would consider the cheapies Yoshida and Chambers (once fit again). Boruc doesn't offer great value, Adrian and Mannone are cheaper

      Saints and Chelsea.
Cardiff can't be considered as they can't defend.
Tottenham might be a shout with players coming back.
West ham have to be a consideration.

Cahill - wish I'd caught on to him sooner at his price. Looks more of a menace than JT at set pieces..

Cardiff are way too open to be backed for clean sheets. I'm even shipping Marshall.

      I'd say

Fonte Cahill/Terry Zaba for the next 3

Double Chelsea, Southampton, West Ham/Sunderland rotating keepers, Arsenal home games still look decent.

I can't see Cardiff or Villa being worthy of serious consideration.

Boruc not essential when you have manonne or adrian as cheaper options and Chambers or Yoshida as route into saints backline.

Baines..... he will score a goal if we all believe in him enough
Azpi..... sure look hey, he's the cheapest route into the chelsea defense
Rafael.... bita Brazilian flair never goes amiss
      Fonte.... I like his name

I have 5.3m in the bank, where do I spend it? I'm 0.1/0.2 out of price range for Mata and Caz.

    Boruc, Mannone
    Coleman, Merte, Ward, Olsson, Bruce
    Haz, Silva, Lallana, Mirallas, Pozuelo
    Studge, Suarez, Dzeko

Any ideas? RVP? Chelsea defence? Gerrard/Oscar?

Mertesacker -> Chelsea defender is what i'm looking at now. Mourinho will keep things extra tight between now and the end of the season knowing that Arsenal will drop points for sure over the next few weeks.

'Arsenal are set to play six of the current top seven over the next nine Gameweeks'

It would be hard to let him go, but is it time to say goodbye to Mertesacker for a Chelsea defender?

    e) Eriksen to Lallana

Okay. I'm 392 in the overall rankings, so don't want any big risks.

Could really use some more perspectives on my team.

    Squad:

    Boruc Mannone

    Evans. Sagna. Baines. Bennett. Whittaker

    AJ Eriksen Hazard Yaya Oviedo

    Suárez RVP Sturridge

    1ft. £0.8m in the bank.

    Initial thoughts...

    A. Evans -> £5.8m defender. (Cahil?)
    B. Whittaker -> £4.7m defender.
    C. Baines -> someone cheaper, funds used to upgrade AJ. For GW 26.
    D. Eriksen to Lallana.

Note. Could also just switch AJ to mirallas next week. Good upcoming fixtures. Or someone else...!

    So, any thoughts?

As always I'm fine with a hit if justified.

    Thanks!!

    J.

    Ps. Team linked...

Tough one now tho, could probably get a Chelsea defender in there (Cahill), but if u do u cant do AJ - Mirallas. Both are great transfers imo
So I guess, if Evans plays this gw.. save the transfer, if not.. do Evans - Cahill?
