A solitary strike from Branislav Ivanovic is enough to clinch the points for Chelsea at the Etihad. Jose Mourinho’s defence stands firm as City’s 100% home record comes to an end without the services of the stricken Sergio Aguero:

Blues Backline Defies the Etihad
In spite of conceding just two goals in their previous seven league fixtures, Chelsea rolled up to the Etihad as underdogs last night. With the hamstrung Sergio Aguero sitting in the stands and Fernandinho’s agility missing in central midfield, Jose Mourinho’s side were able to repel an attack that had hit Arsenal and Spurs for six and stuck four past United in front of their own fans. Branislav Ivanovic’s first goal since Gameweek 1 earned the Serbian a 14-point haul, though it’s perhaps debatable whether many of his owners were confident enough to hand him a slot in their starting XI.

Having passed the toughest test of all now, Mourinho’s defenders have shown we can rely on them regardless of fixture difficulty. At a time where Arsenal are set to play six of the current top seven over the next nine Gameweeks, doubling up on Chelsea’s backline looks a very viable tactic and, whilst John Terry and Gary Cahill also offer a goal threat, Cesar Azpilicueta has now started 13 of the last 14 Gameweeks and, at 5.3, may appeal to those with limited finances.

Oscar Benched in Tactical Reshuffle
Whilst there’s no doubt the Brazilian is Jose Mourinho’s preferred choice for the role in “the hole” behind a lone striker, it’s clear that his manager will, at times, sacrifice him for the sake of the team. With David Luiz partnered by Nemanja Matic in the double-pivot, Mourinho shifted the versatile Ramires onto the right of the midfield three and opted for Willian behind Samuel Eto’o as Oscar dropped to the bench. Willian has now started seven of the last nine, whilst Oscar has featured in the first XI on five of those occasions after returning from injury. Games against Newcastle and West Brom next week are likely to see the playmaker reinstalled to the first-team after a mere eight-minute appearance last night but, at a time when so many mid-price midfielders are producing the points, many will feel they cannot afford to have an 8.9-priced asset under the risk of rotation.

Negredo‘s Game Time a Worry
The Spaniard returned to the City first-team after missing out against Tottenham with a shoulder complaint. Snapped up by over 25,000 Fantasy managers as a result of Aguero’s hamstring injury, Negredo left his 11% owners thoroughly frustrated after failing to score at the Etihad for only the second time in his last eight home starts. More concerning was Pellegrini’s decision to sub the former Sevilla forward off with just 56 minutes on the clock as Stevan Jovetic got the nod to partner Edin Dzeko for the remainder of the game – after the match, the City boss admitted Negredo is not yet 100% after his recent shoulder complaint. Negredo has now managed 90 minutes just once in the last seven Gameweeks, whilst Dzeko has played the entire match in four of the previous five now, suggesting the Bosnian looks far more reliable to last from start to finish under Pellegrini at the moment.

Etihad Resilience Fading
Last night’s result also continued a run of form which has seen City struggle to keep out their opponents at home. Pellegrini’s side racked up five clean sheets in their first seven at the Etihad and conceded just twice – over the subsequent five, they’ve registered a single shut-out (against Palace) and shipped seven goals. As the Chilean plots to recover from Monday evening’s setback, he’ll be buoyed by City’s remaining visitors – Sunderland, Stoke and Villa roll up in the next five and, with Fulham, Southampton, West Brom and West Ham all yet to arrive, those owning City defenders will be happy to hold in the meantime.

    RVP really is tempting as a 3 week punt, especially given the potential as (c) this week. I'm down to these 2 options - whatcha reckon? PS, there's a good chance I will WC in GW29.

    (A) GW25: Ozil & Benteke -> Sterling & RVP(c) [4 pointer]
    GW26: Bony -> Dzeko/JRod

    (B) GW25: Ozil -> Lallana
    GW26: Bony -> Sturridge/Negredo/Dzeko/JRod

    Szczesny, Davis
    Terry, Kolarov, B Davies, Clyne, Whittaker
    Hazard, Silva, Ozil, Mirallas, Puncheon
    Suarez, Benteke, Bony

        Really? I'd be less so if I wasn't planning on WCing in a few weeks. I think RVP is by far the best (c) option this week.

            I'd probably bench Sterling if doing A), but then bench Puncheon until I WC. We shouldn't underestimate how truly awful Fulham are.

            Re the WC, playing in GW29 would enable me to set myself up well for the run in and DGWs.

        What about Shaw to Collins & Eriksen to Lallana instead? (Keeps the strong defensive rotation and covers Southampton's great attacking fixtures - also gives me 3 strong defensive fixtures for GW 28).

        If I do that I reckon I can save another 2 transfers in time for GW 28.

    Surely now is the time to be picking sound fundamentals, not wild punts ?

    Sound fundamentals - Suarez, Ward, Hazard, Lallana, Terry etc

    Punts - Adebayor, Benteke, AJ etc

    I want the core of my team to remain the same from now until the end of the season!

        I think you're being cynical for the sake of it. For what it's worth, I -- and I daresay many others -- had huge regard for him as an actor, so that's the world left a bit poorer now. Feel free not to subscribe, of course.

          He was a drug addict - whilst his death is sad (particularly as he had kids), I can't help but find the media fawning a little nauseating - to me it is not acceptable to hold drug addicts in such public regard and revelry.

          Thousands of addicts die everyday and are discarded as 'junkie scum'. So what, this guy is different because he could act?

            Can you kindly point me to those people who regard people who have died of drug-related causes as "junkie scum"? If anything, you're straying fairly close to that mindset yourself.

            It isn't "fawning". He's being remembered because he was an enormously talented actor, not because he happened to mainline heroin (and for what it's worth, he'd been perfectly clean for 24 years and only relapsed last year).

            After bugger all against NEW and CHE he shows an upturn for one week and then gets a red card for AVL, NOR and SOU.

            Just the fixtures I got him for.

            Typical.

    Hey Guys,

    Mannone
    Yoshida - Evans - Vlaar
    Gerrard - Cazorla - Mata - Puncheon
    RVP (C) - Suarez - Adebayor

    Adrian - Noone - Koscielny - Burner

    I full expect Evans not to make it, especially with Vidic back from suspension anyway there is no reason to risk him, so subject to injury confirmation does Evans ---> Azpi seem a solid move this week, particularly with a blank incoming anyway making it sensible to lose a United player.

      Honestly dont get this, i would spend my time trying to figure out how to score the most points and let the rest take care of itself.

      You're about 70 points of the top 1k. This is achievable. Focus on your team and the rest will hopefully follow 🙂

    As it states in the 'rules' section of the website, 'The January Wildcard can only be used after Gameweek 20 starts (1 Jan 11:30) until Gameweek 23 ends (1 Feb 11:30)'. Unfortunately this means that you have now missed the opportunity to use the January wildcard, and it will no longer be available to you. Apologies for any inconvenience.

    With RVP & Suarez up top i really need to release some capital with my 3rd striker. Giroud is going with a couple of tough fixtures & CL approaching. I really like the idea of Lambert but see so much love for JRod. He has for sure had a great season lus far, but Lambert hasn't... yet is only a few points behind with less minutes on pitch. With Lambert being the only option up top & coming off a goal & assists I really feel he is worth the extra .5 mill. Can people talk me out of this as the .5 would help with my midfield upgrades on Januzaj & KI.

    Thanks for any input will be much appreciated

      Are you in need of some differentials? You can just play safe with JRod and bank the 0.5. Lambert isn't a bad option now with Osvaldo gone. Might be on pens and FKs, so that's a bonus.

      Both good options, it depends on your preference really and who your MF upgrade will be.

      The great thing about J.Rod is that he just ticks a long nicely, a bit like Silva from a couple of seasons ago but at a budget price!

    Mannone [Davis] - Plan to take out Mannone for Adrian after next gw

    Parr - Ward - Collins [Fabio][Sagna] - Can't see Arsenal keeping a clean sheet

    Hazard - Mata - Toure - Eriksen [Bacuna] - Would of liked to have Bacuna in side but will hope for +0.1 over next few weeks and favourible fixtures

    Suarez - RVP - Sturridge -

    Question is.. if I'm playing a 3 man forward line, putting Sagna in makes no sense... so do I play Sagna or do I drop sturridge... and RVP is captain this weekend although Mata is tempting
