A solitary strike from Branislav Ivanovic is enough to clinch the points for Chelsea at the Etihad. Jose Mourinho’s defence stands firm as City’s 100% home record comes to an end without the services of the stricken Sergio Aguero:

Blues Backline Defies the Etihad
In spite of conceding just two goals in their previous seven league fixtures, Chelsea rolled up to the Etihad as underdogs last night. With the hamstrung Sergio Aguero sitting in the stands and Fernandinho’s agility missing in central midfield, Jose Mourinho’s side were able to repel an attack that had hit Arsenal and Spurs for six and stuck four past United in front of their own fans. Branislav Ivanovic’s first goal since Gameweek 1 earned the Serbian a 14-point haul, though it’s perhaps debatable whether many of his owners were confident enough to hand him a slot in their starting XI.

Having passed the toughest test of all now, Mourinho’s defenders have shown we can rely on them regardless of fixture difficulty. At a time where Arsenal are set to play six of the current top seven over the next nine Gameweeks, doubling up on Chelsea’s backline looks a very viable tactic and, whilst John Terry and Gary Cahill also offer a goal threat, Cesar Azpilicueta has now started 13 of the last 14 Gameweeks and, at 5.3, may appeal to those with limited finances.

Oscar Benched in Tactical Reshuffle
Whilst there’s no doubt the Brazilian is Jose Mourinho’s preferred choice for the role in “the hole” behind a lone striker, it’s clear that his manager will, at times, sacrifice him for the sake of the team. With David Luiz partnered by Nemanja Matic in the double-pivot, Mourinho shifted the versatile Ramires onto the right of the midfield three and opted for Willian behind Samuel Eto’o as Oscar dropped to the bench. Willian has now started seven of the last nine, whilst Oscar has featured in the first XI on five of those occasions after returning from injury. Games against Newcastle and West Brom next week are likely to see the playmaker reinstalled to the first-team after a mere eight-minute appearance last night but, at a time when so many mid-price midfielders are producing the points, many will feel they cannot afford to have an 8.9-priced asset under the risk of rotation.

Negredo‘s Game Time a Worry
The Spaniard returned to the City first-team after missing out against Tottenham with a shoulder complaint. Snapped up by over 25,000 Fantasy managers as a result of Aguero’s hamstring injury, Negredo left his 11% owners thoroughly frustrated after failing to score at the Etihad for only the second time in his last eight home starts. More concerning was Pellegrini’s decision to sub the former Sevilla forward off with just 56 minutes on the clock as Stevan Jovetic got the nod to partner Edin Dzeko for the remainder of the game – after the match, the City boss admitted Negredo is not yet 100% after his recent shoulder complaint. Negredo has now managed 90 minutes just once in the last seven Gameweeks, whilst Dzeko has played the entire match in four of the previous five now, suggesting the Bosnian looks far more reliable to last from start to finish under Pellegrini at the moment.

Etihad Resilience Fading
Last night’s result also continued a run of form which has seen City struggle to keep out their opponents at home. Pellegrini’s side racked up five clean sheets in their first seven at the Etihad and conceded just twice – over the subsequent five, they’ve registered a single shut-out (against Palace) and shipped seven goals. As the Chilean plots to recover from Monday evening’s setback, he’ll be buoyed by City’s remaining visitors – Sunderland, Stoke and Villa roll up in the next five and, with Fulham, Southampton, West Brom and West Ham all yet to arrive, those owning City defenders will be happy to hold in the meantime.

What would you do with this lot? 4.9 in bank

    Mannone (Marshall)
    Ivanovic Vlaar Evans (Gabbidon, Koscielny)
Hazard Mata (C) Cazorla Johnson (Noone)
    Sturridge Adebayor Dzeko

I'm thinking it looks good so leave and have 2FT for next week or Adebayor to maybe Benteke?

Cahill plays 90% of the time. On the off chance he doesn't start I've noticed he never makes a sub appearance so if you have a playing sub defender on you're bench you should be set.

    Who would you bench from:

Lallana STK (H) Hazard NEW (H) Mata FUL (H) Johnson HUL (H) Silva NOR (A)
Adebayor EVE (H) Giroud LIV (A) Suárez ARS (H)

The above is if I bring in Silva on my FT in place of Januzaj.

Alternatively, I can bring in Cahill/Terry on my FT for Kosc and play Ward, Shaw, Cahill/Terry in defence and bench Coleman and Dawson... But I have been burned everytime I benched Coleman when he was fit and his fixture was tough...

Then I can bring in Silva in GW26 for AJ and Kosc back for Cahill later on...

Oscar is not a safe pick only for the game where Jose wants to reduce width and play more defensively to frustrate the opposition. Chelsea have no more games against big and strong midfields and hence Oscar should start most of the remaining games unless he needs to be rested for Champions League games...

The formation used by Chelsea yesterday would be great against Barca/Real/Bayern in the UCL, unfortunately Matic is cup tied there...

Tell me what is wrong with this team please (there must be something fundamentally wrong, as my main ML rival has pulled 174 points clear of me)

    Boruc Davis
    Azpi Bertrand Clyne (Hudson, Chester)
    Navas Sterling Hazard Mata (Pozuelo)
    SAS

0.8 ITB. Already done Chiriches > Clyne this week but open to suggestions for improvement for a hit?

No keeper rotation, non starters and low team value is what's wrong.

Yes, if your team value is low then use it to your advantage by getting cheap high performers. Lallana, JRod, Mirallas. That allows a double Chelsea defence which could be a goldmine.

Ah, in that case I'd look to ditch RVP perhaps after this gameweek. Keep this week and captain. But long term he's costing the rest of your team dearly. He also misses gwk 28.

This is a good example of the price being paid to own a £13.6m striker.

Next six gwks or so Benteke/JRod/Lambert should be more reliable than Bony.

An option would be to downgrade Studge immediately (Dzeko?), and Navas to Lallana, and Davis, Chester and Clyne to 3.9Gk, Fonte and Ivan.

That would cost you 20, but this team costs you more than that every round. You could also perhaps wait with Clyne for the next GW, since if Chambs is injured, Clyne will play.

I suggest doubling up on So'ton defence and therefore to have only one of Lallana and JRod. In fact, doubling up on both Chelsea and Southampton defences seems very much all eggs in the same basket, but that can work as a differential that you are looking for. Everybody has one of each team, but with doubles you will always profit more than others from their clean sheets. And I can see those clean sheets coming.

Since you have too much invested up front, you should've spreaded the rest of cash better. Drop Mata and Navas, get Lalla and AJ and upgrade defence is what you should've done on WC.

Is the A in SAS Aguero? In which case he needs to become RVP or a Southampton striker - JRod or Lambert. Benteke is another good option.

I'd probably play safe and captain Suarez this week if you don't get RVP.

3/5 of your defenders either injured or dropped. If by SAS you mean aguero along with the other two that is another major concern.

No useful mid priced mid in there. Sterling won't get you much. I guess he has Lallana and or AJ.

I see your point but ideally I wouldnt own these players, I have just been lumbered with them. When you are so fr behind it hurts to bring in somebody like Lalalana, for say, Navas, as he is a decent differential. Oh well, I'll wait for next season

Forget about differential for a moment. Just build up as good a team as you can. Your differential is huge now, but as you can see, it is negative (i.e. the difference your choices make between you and your competition each round is for their advantage).

        +1 on this one too.

In short: it's hard to understand that you have to ask what is wrong with this team that is a total mess. Take a big hit (-12, -16) to clean it up of non-starters and build your team some good structure or prepare to lose more ground each GW. Your case is one of those few where hits will almost certainly be worth taking. See Jonty's recommendations above, they're solid.

          Yeah will do, thanks.

This week isn't the best time to do it though because

          A) Just brought in RVP for the Fulham game
          B) Just started a new month and have chance of winning the prize

Once my bid to win the month deteriorates and the fixtures get worse for my players, I'll take a massive hit. Thanks everyone

One very important thing: if you want to have a non-starting back up GK, have him from a team from where you do not want field players. That is, not from Southampton.

Your transfer this week, I have to say, was clueless: you already had two defenders who don't start, so you brought in a third one.
