Andy Carroll is suspended for the next three league games after the FA throw out his violent conduct appeal. Seamus Coleman is set to return for Everton’s visit to the Lane on Sunday. Jack Wilshere is expected back for Arsenal, Swansea axe Michael Laudrup, Jozy Altidore’s prospects are talked up by Gus Poyet, whilst Rene Meulensteen’s problems at Fulham go from bad to worse:

Carrol Loses Red Card Appeal

The West Ham target man has seen his appeal over a controversial dismissal in Saturday’s victory over Swansea rejected, meaning he will now miss his side’s next three Premier League fixtures (avl, NOR, SOU). Carroll clearly felt hard done by, taking to Twitter yesterday to condemn the decision to reject his appeal as ‘disgraceful’, and reports have now emerged that West Ham will take legal action over the FA’s decision. Should this lead nowhere for the west London club, however, the striker will have to sit on the sidelines for the remainder of February as his team fight to avoid the drop.

The Scout Says: Things just aren’t go Sam Allardyce’s way at the moment. Carroll’s long-awaited return from injury back in Gameweek 20 looked set to provide the Hammers with just the spark they needed in their relegation scrap and, indeed, the Geordie has since provided three assists to help his side to victories over Cardiff and Swansea. The loss of the 7.1-priced frontman for the rest of the month, however, leaves Alladyce with limited options up top – he could choose to play without a named striker, a tactic he has often turned to throughout the season while Carroll was out injured, or opt for Carlton Cole to lead the line. All of this also bodes poorly for the prospects of Kevin Nolan, who showed what an attacking combination he and Carroll can be last weekend, picking up two goals from the Geordie’s knock-downs. Without his big sidekick’s contribution, it would seem that Nolan’s prospects are not quite as great as they might appear for the 6,000 managers who have already transferred him in this week.

COLEMAN SET FOR WEEKEND COMEBACK

Having missed Everton’s last two Premier League fixtures, reports indicate that Seamus Coleman is likely to return to action this weekend for his side’s trip to White Hart Lane. Roberto Martinez was positive on the prospects of the full-back featuring against Spurs on Sunday, whilst also indicating that Gerard Deulofeu is also nearing his return from a hamstring injury:

“They are very important players and we have had good news on them. I would say Seamus is probably in the right category [to play]. Gerard is back from Spain, is training and is really excited and enthusiastic about getting back. Obviously we will have to assess him to see how quickly we can get him match fit. We’re really excited at having those two back.”

The Scout Says: The most popular and highest scoring defender in the game, Coleman’s likely return against Tottenham this weekend will be welcome news for his Fantasy owners, who will be hoping he can return to the attacking form that saw him plunder four goals in seven games between Gameweeks 13 and 19. That said, away fixtures against Spurs and Chelsea coming up in the next month might cause hesitation amongst prospective owners and those who transferred the 6.5-priced defender out during his injury lay-off. Meanwhile, the reintroduction of Deulofeu into the Fantasy frame will be interesting. Classified as a forward in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and available for just 5.4, the young Spaniard was handed game time at the expense of Kevin Mirallas prior to his injury but, with the Belgian flourishing in a central berth, he could vie with Aiden McGeady for the role on the right.

Wilshere on Course for Weekend Return

Arsene Wenger’s midfield options look likely to be boosted this weekend with a number of media outlets reporting that Jack Wilshere is set to return from an ankle problem for the Gunners trip to Anfield.

The Scout Says: Given that Mathieu Flamini and Aaron Ramsey remain sidelined through suspension and injury respectively, Wilshere’s availability boosts Arsenal’s options in the double-pivot, where Mikel Arteta was partnered by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain last weekend. However, given that the 2-0 win over Palace was the latter’s first start since Gameweek 1, Wenger could opt to ease him back into action and give Wilshere the nod instead. At 6.4, Wilshere may be back on our radars if he can continue the form that harvested a goal and three assists over his three matches prior to picking up the ankle problem.

Laudrup Dismissed By Swansea

Swansea face an uncertain last few months of the season after parting company with Michael Laudrup last night. Despite guiding the club to the Capital One Cup last year and making the Europa League knockout stages this term, Laudrup has failed to work his magic in the league – the Swans have picked up six points from their last 10 matches and lie just two points above the drop zone. Chairman Huw Jenkins, who has now appointed club captain in charge “for the foreseeable future” explained:

“I had a meeting with Michael today in a final attempt to support him and establish a way to improve the work of the backroom team to secure the results we need over the final 14 Premier League games. However, after thinking long and hard about the best way forward, I felt it was unlikely we would achieve a stable environment at the club to allow us to get back to basics and produce the performance levels that have served Swansea City so well over the last few years.”

The Scout Says: Reading between the lines of Jenkins’ statement, it seems highly unlikely Monk will change the club’s possession-based approach. Whilst a 4-3-3 also looks set to remain intact, Monk may decide to freshen things up in order to make his own mark on the starting XI. The likes of Neil Taylor and Alex Pozuelo could offer us real budget options if either can push for a role in the first-team, whilst Laudrup’s departure also arrives at a time where local reports suggest Michu and Michel Vorm could be in with a shout of returning this weekend, though Jonjo Shelvey is a doubt again after picking up another hamstring problem. Swansea may still be worth our consideration, though, given they have three vital home games (CAR, CPL, WBA) in the next six.

Cottagers Woes Continue

Rene Meulensteen’s decision to make eight changes from the side beaten by Southampton backfired last night as Fulham stumbled out of the FA Cup. The Cottagers lost 1-0 at home to a Sheffield United side currently sitting second bottom of League One, meaning they have now tasted defeat in nine of the new manager’s 15 games in charge across all competitions.

The Scout Says: From a Fantasy perspective, last night’s morale-sapping display will merely strengthen faith in United’s main men ahead of Fulham’s trip to Old Trafford on Sunday. The London outfit have already conceded more goals on the road than any other side in the league and, with Robin van Persie notching in both games since his return, the Dutchman is likely to be heavily backed for the armband this weekend – indeed, he has edged ahead of Luis Suarez in this week’s Captain Poll as Liverpool prepare to welcome Arsenal to Anfield.

Poyet Praises Altidore

The Sunderland boss lauded the US international’s derby display against Newcastle and suggested that, in spite of a lack of goals, Altidore looks set to be a key figure in his side’s battle to beat the drop.

“He had a magnificent game on Saturday. I was so sad that he didn’t score that chance. They practically gave it to him, but I said to him in the dressing room, ‘Ah, now I like it. Now you know how important you are, and you can feel it’. I played with a lot of strikers who were top scorers, and when they didn’t score for a while, they would not pass the ball to you. He is not doing that, which is great and a credit to him. Somehow, we need to try to get him a goal. If we keep winning, his goal is going to come. But his performance on Saturday was one of the biggest and most important points for us.”

The Scout Says: With Poyet finally settled on a 4-3-3 formation, Altidore’s chances of nailing down the lone forward role look to have improved after Poyet admitted Steven Fletcher could be set for time on the sidelines with an Achilles problem. One look at the schedule suggests few will be looking to invest in the Wearsiders after this weekend’s home game with Hull – Poyet’s side have subsequent trips to United, Arsenal and Liverpool, with a blank Gameweek sandwiched in between the latter two matches. Nonetheless, Sunderland are set to be handed a double Gameweek somewhere down the line and, at 6.2 in FPL with an ownership of less than 1%, Altidore may prove to be a real differential punt if he can show some form beforehand. In all honesty, though, Fabio Borini looks the better bet. Coming in at the same price, he may be fielded on the left flank, but with spot-kick duties part of his repertoire, the Italian has produced two goals and a pair of assists in the last three Gameweeks.

Evans, Ozil => Cahill, Yaya (-4)

    Positives:
    - Need che def so Cahill in for long term, Yaya too unless two blanks gw28+29
    - I can bench Coleman this gw
    - Cahill has very good chance to pay that hit back right away
    - Gives me good opportunity to save next weeks tranny

    Negatives:
    - Long term plans change to short term plans very quickly
    - Madness to take a hit so you can bench Coleman

Well looks like at least I see more postives than negatives 🙂

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Liverpool, ManC and ManU armband stats

Our forthcoming Captain Sensible members article will have a wealth of stats around Gameweek 25 captaincy contenders. But I thought I’d do a little fore runner for that looking at publicly available information around team defence and attacking stats.

    Sturridge/Suarez

Arsenal have three away clean sheets and have conceded 15 goals on the road. Liverpool have scored 33 goals at home.

Prediction– A low scoring game, with Suarez or Sturridge either scoring or assisting each other. A draw very possible.

    Capt score – 12-18

    Dzeko/Yaya

Norwich have conceded 11 goals at home and have five clean sheets at home out of 12. ManC have scored 26 goals away.

Prediction – Norwich are no pushovers at home and will be looking to avenge their Etihad drubbing. Man City victory, but not by much.

Capt score – Dzeko 4-12, Yaya (jammy penalty) 14

    RVP/Rooney

Fulham have conceded 28 goals away. ManU have scored 16 goals at home

Prediction - Looking at this it looks like Man U have the poorest home scoring record out of the three but up against the most porous away defence. Drubbing potential muted by the Moyes factor.

Capt score - RVP should score (12-18) Rooney (assist or two) (10-16)

I'm tempted too. Looks the most nailed on for an assist or two. As above the Moyes factor is annoying.

Without doubt the hardest captaincy choice of the season so far. Basically its down to luck as there are arguments for or against in all cases. If you get a decent captain score this week you should count yourself fortunate!

Depends what those around my rank (1,884) do. If I think they will captain Suarez then I've no choice but to keep up. Not captaining Suarez and then watching him rack up points is very costly.

Agreed, and I've been very successful by taking no risks this year. Fancy it somehow this week though. Hazard looked so dangerous vs City that I fancy him to do something against an abject Newcastle. Lets see if I can keep my bottle with captaining Hazard... Its frustrating isnt it, i think it will be around 80% of top 1000 that will captain him so like you say itsa risk not captaining him. Funnily enough my best GW however was going against the grain and (C) Walcott which gave me a massive jump so it can work... im just not sure any alternatives offer the goalthreat of Walcott except possibly RVP.

Yes, but captaining someone else and watching your captain outscore Suarez could shoot you up into the top thousand! There's an upside and a downside either way - depends whether you want to be conservative and retain your current rank, or to take a slight risk and go either up or down. If you're ever going to captain someone else, this is probably the best time to do it.

Really not sure, which is partly why I wrote this to get some thoughts down. Suarez is the default option. Mata appeal. I have Rooney - who I now consider a risky captaincy punt. If I had RVP I'd do him as I'm sure he'll score a goal. Suarez v Mata for me.

I'd love to captain Hazard but he's not captaincy material - so hard to predict when he will explode with points.

GW16, everyone was saying “Captain Rooney! Man Utd are playing Villa and Suarez has a tough fixture vs Spurs”... I mean it made sense, Spurs had kept 7 clean sheets in their previous 15 games (46%)

The result was Rooney 5 points, Suarez 22 and a massive fall in rank.

GW25, with a sense of deja-vut and everyone saying “Captain RVP! Man Utd are playing Fulham and Suarez has a tough fixture vs Arsenal”... again, it makes perfect sense, Arsenal have kept 10 clean sheets in their previous 24 games (42%)

I wonder what the result will be this time... Suarez (c) for me!

          Chelsea home form - P6, W5, D1 (1st)
          Newcastle away form - P6, W3, D1, L2 (5th)

Chelsea have scored 25 goals at home. Newcastle have conceded 16 goals away from home.

Prediction - Newcastle have a great away record in the league this year... I can't see Chelsea scoring anymore than 2 goals...

Hazard (c) will garner around 10-14 pts...

          Hazard -

Arsenal have conceded 15, LFC scored 33, added together that's 48.

Fulham have conceded 28, Man United scored 16, added together that's 44.

This obviously means... nothing at all. Hard to pick a captain this GW, but it's currently on RVP over Suarez.

Interesting point bout the risk of not captaining Saurez, guess it comes down to your character, are you prepared to accept dismal failure (ie when saurez got 22 v spurs whilst rooney got 5 v villa) for the chance of a cracking haul (ie if man u steamroller fulham)
Im in the gamble camp thats for sure

i prefer your logic of % of risk to reward
depending upon your circumstances, as in low rank or ML targets.
In my situation, only two of guys in contention in ML have sturridge and only one has hazard, i have both.
Therefore in terms of the reward of (c) them over saurez doesnt justify the risk of not giving it to saurez.

But on the other hand, two guys have RVP and will no doubt give it to him.
so my thoughts on this is it therefore wiser to go with someone they don't have, as any gain on having captain saurez over their non captain saurez may not match the gain they have with RVP captain.

His actual general play is ok - holding up the ball, battling with defenders etc..., but if they are relying on him to score goals they are going to be disappointed.

He just doesn't have a scoring touch, or look convincing as a threat in any way whatsoever.

You prefer him over Sterling - thought he has looked pretty threatening of late and seems to have nailed down his spot in the LIV team. (ful, SWA) arguably as good a fixtures as Zaha (AVL, HUL) too.

Not sure if I prefer him over Sterling, just saying I think Zaha should become a starter..

Sterling looks like you say nailed in a great goalscoring team, so it's a tough one. Think Zaha is a better player but you could be right that Sterling is a better fantasy pick.

DDG, Baines and Mert are too expensive to keep benching.

    Team for this week:
    Boruc
    Kolarov-Ward-Coleman (kos, Chester)
Ki - Yaya - Hazard - Lallana (Wilshere)
    Suarez - Sturridge - Ade

    Questions:
    Should I play Kos?
Thinking of Suarez > RVP (C) - think suarez form dipping and sturridge bang in form
    or
Sturridge > RVP (C) and Wilshere > Zaha for a 4 point hit.

    Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks!

RVP at home to Fulham is going one of two ways:

    1. It was one of those games that was so nailed on for RVP to get a mega haul that it was (of course) never going to happen.

    2. It was one of those games that was so nailed on for RVP to get a mega haul that non-owners are kicking themselves because they didn't get in on it.

So he's either going to get a mega haul or he isn't?

      Good work, Sherlock. 😉

Ha, my observation was more to do with the psychological impact on RVP owners and non-owners alike!

That said, he will probably just get the one goal and 3 bonus, thereby sitting comfortably between both my predictions 😉

If you had Suarez Bony and Negredo with 3,0M in the bank it seems a no-brainer to do Negredo --> Rooney?

I brought Rooney and now regretting it. Think he'll play much deeper with the defence in tatters and Im looking at doing Rooney to Sturrideg next gameweek. I'd stick with Negredo in this instance

Why would you ditch Negredo? In a team that scores bukets of goals, great fuxtures coming up, less rotation with Aguero out

Keep Negredo.. I replaced Aguero with Negredo too although I had enough funds for Rooney

Is Silva -> Yaya a sideways move considering that I have 2FT and don't need to make any subs and my nearest ML rivals all have Yaya?

Wouldn't bother with that switch, sure I, among many other Yaya owners have been considering a switch the other way too. Just keep and hope for the best I reckon.

I'm 2 points behind the leader and 3rd and 4th are 12 and 14 behind me.
I have differentials in other areas but the Yaya keeps pulling them back into to contention each week.
Confident I can be clear ahead in 2 weeks but Yaya has been a pain

If you think he's likely to get more points then yes.
Ignore your rivals teams and put in whoever you think will score the most points.

So what will be the impact if Laurdrups departure on the Swans? Will fringe players like Taylor now get more of a chance? Is this the final nail in Bony's FPL coffin?

Got a feeling Baines will score this week. Kosc not the best option but Ars defense is tight. I'm playing Ward, so a CPL CS would be great.

            Midfield looks class.

I'd be a little concerned about your strikers, don't feel the love for Gru anymore, but he could easily get a goal, Pool is shaky at the back.
Negredo was on my watch list with Kun out and those great fixtures, but he looked shite against Chelsea so my plan to get him in for Sturridge won't happen (with Fulham next week for Studge).

            Overall a good team broseph.
