Our weekly focus on player recommendations for the next four to six Gameweeks is rolled out once again today. We analyse the main movers and shakers in this week’s update, with the full listings per classification available on the sidebar on your right:

The Defence

Southampton pair Artur Boruc and Jose Fonte remain in the top two for keepers and defenders respectively as they prepare for a strong run of upcoming fixtures over the next six Gameweeks, with Stoke, Hull, West Ham, Palace and Norwich all on their agenda.

Chelsea duo Petr Cech and John Terry are on the rise after Monday’s win at City took their recent run to six clean sheets in eight. A shut-out at the Etihad highlights the Blues’ fixture-proof appeal, whilst Terry’s attacking threat in the box gives him the edge over any other backline option for Jose Mourinho’s side and elevates him to the summit of this week’s defensive refresh.

With back-to-back clean sheets against Chelsea and Swansea, West Ham look in fine defensive form ahead of some tempting fixtures. Priced at just 4.3, Adrian’s cut-price appeal is heightened by the fact he rotates with Boruc from now until the end of the season, whilst fit-again Winston Reid, at 4.7, cemented his injury comeback by climbing off the bench last weekend – Sam Allardyce’s side now have home games against Norwich, Southampton and Hull to supplement a trip to Villa in the next five.

Joe Hart and Vincent Kompany look the safest bets in the City rearguard as the schedule smiles kindly on Manuel Pellegrini’s men. Trips to Norwich and Hull, allied with three very promising home games (SUN, STO, AVL), more than atone for a Gameweek 28 blank due to Capital One Cup duties. At 5.5, Aleksandar Kolarov offers a cheaper alternative to the Belgian and, whilst his game time is less guaranteed, the left-back’s explosive potential could prove profitable over those fixtures as City go on the offensive.

Three very promising home games in the six (CPL, WHM, CAR) allow Everton pair Tim Howard and Seamus Coleman to ascend the rankings. The latter was an unused sub against Villa last weekend and is set to return to the starting XI for this weekend’s trip to Spurs, as he looks to add to his five-goal tally and maintain his lead at the top of the defender standings.

Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen appears on our radars once again after making his first appearance since Gameweek 14 last weekend. Despite his side conceding against Hull, the Belgian still earned a couple of bonus points and has Newcastle, Norwich and Cardiff in the next four for those looking for an under the radar premium-priced defender. Cardiff pair David Marshall and Steven Caulker are also on the up as they prepare for a run which hands them a trip to Swansea and three home games (AVL, HUL, FUL) in the next five.

Arsenal and Sunderland’s fixtures are a cause for concern amongst their Fantasy owners. The Gunners play six of the current top seven in the next nine – a schedule which may well see many Wojciech Szczesny and Per Mertesacker owners contemplate a transfer out. Sunderland’s home game with Hull precedes a run which sees the Black Cats travel to City, Arsenal and Liverpool in the subsequent four, with a blank Gameweek sandwiched between the last two fixtures.

Palace due Joel Ward and Julian Speroni are also poised for some tough-looking fixtures after this weekend. Whilst a clean sheet could be on the cards against West Brom, Tony Pulis’ side then have Everton, United and Southampton in the following four to lessen their budget appeal.

Midfield

With Eden Hazard and Yaya Toure maintaining their spots at first and second respectively, Juan Mata is the main climber this week. The Spaniard has already produced an assist in each of his two appearances for United – he now has Fulham, Palace and West Brom in the next five to bring him onto our radars as Fantasy managers bring him on board well in advance of double Gameweek 31.

Adam Lallana is our pick of the mid-price options. Sitting third in the midfield standings behind Toure and Hazard, the Southampton skipper remains outstanding value and brings a real consistency of form into the above-mentioned fixtures, with attacking returns in six of the last eight.

Adam Johnson’s form ensures he remains in the top five. Six goals and a pair of assists in the last four highlights the Sunderland winger’s incredible form, though his owners may well be looking for alternatives as his schedule prepares to take a turn for the worse. He’s joined by both Christian Eriksen and Kevin Mirallas in the same price bracket as a number of mid-price options start to produce the goods – the latter’s three strikes in four, allied with a move up top, suggest he’s set to benefit from Everton’s schedule.

Kevin Nolan’s prospects undoubtedly look a little bleaker after sidekick Andy Carroll was suspended for three matches after his Saturday lunchtime altercation with Chico Flores, though the fixtures still favour the 6.5-priced Hammers skipper. Hatem Ben Arfa is set to benefit from increased game time due to Yohan Cabaye’s departure from Newcastle, though his inconsistent displays have yet to persuade Fantasy managers he’s worth a punt.

Further down in the budget range, Wilfried Zaha’s display off the bench last weekend suggests he could be key to Cardiff’s survival bid, whilst Raheem Sterling has retained his Liverpool starting berth in spite of Daniel Sturridge’s return from injury to remain on the radar at just 5.3.

Forwards

Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge are the front runners, with their relentless consistency racking up the points. The Sturridge bandwagon continues to pick up speed as more Fantasy managers are acquiring him along with the Uruguayan for their front three and, whilst a home clash against Arsenal is a little tricky, the pair then have Fulham, Swansea and Sunderland in the subsequent four to continue the form that has harvested 10.4 and 7.2 points per game this term.

Goals in each of his two games since returning from injury sees Robin Van Persie make a welcome return to the Watchlist’s upper echelons. Granted, at 13.6 in FPL, his acquisition is likely to require some squad restructuring, but his captaincy potential makes him a popular target ahead of United’s kind-looking schedule.

With Sergio Aguero hamstrung for a month, Edin Dzeko and Alvaro Negredo look to be Manuel Pellegrini’s likeliest starters. However, the latter’s recent shoulder injury saw him subbed off within the hour against Chelsea and, with his manager admitting he’s not yet 100%, it’s Dzeko who looks the likeliest to be handed 90-minute appearances and greater game time to grab the goals.

Three goals and an assist in the last four brings Christian Benteke back into consideration. The 8.8-priced Belgian seems buoyant once again after months of ineffectual displays for Villa but now has West Ham, Cardiff, Newcastle and Norwich over the next four to continue his ascent up the rankings.

Southampton’s above-mentioned schedule looks profitable for both Jay Rodriguez and Rickie Lambert. Costing 6.5 and 7.0 respectively, there’s not much between them in terms of price, whilst there’s also very little to separate them in overall points – Rodriguez just edges it by 107 points to 104 points but is undoubtedly the more consistent of the pair. The former Burnley man has produced points in 10 of the last 18 Gameweeks compared to his team-mate’s six in 18 but, with free-kick and penalty duties for the Saints, Lambert has the potential to be a far more explosive asset.

Repost: Used FT to do Giroud -> Tekkers. What do you think of the starting line-up?

    Mannone
    Yoshida / Evans/ Azpi
    Silva/ Hazard (C) / Lallana / Mirallas
    Suarez / Sturridge / Tekkers

    Subs: Adrian/ Puncheon/Sagna/Collins

    (1.0mn in the bank)

Shall I take -4 hit for Silva to Yaya? I wanted the Silva differential this GW and then switch to Yaya next. Any thoughts guys?

So following on from my theory above, a simple question:

Will RVP outscore Giroud by 8points over the next 3 GW's:
    RVP: FUL, ars, cpl
    Giroud: liv, MUN, SUN

WK1: Liverpool have very poor defence so Giroud could match RVP this week.
WK2: following week, it's fortress Arsenal, so another possible shut out for Moyes men.
WK3: Sunderland have only kept 4 CS's away from home (17 goals conceded), whereas cpl at home have kept 5 CS's and conceded only 14 goals,

So on a defensive basis Giroud faces better opposition BUT RVP on form could be the latter half of the season's Suarez or at least last seasons Benteke.

I liked the post measuring the true cost of the RVP move, but I'm not sure about this one -- they are going to have a duel to settle it gw26, though. RVP as captaincy option might tip it for him.

Probably not. Actually, I'd rather wager Giroud outscoring RVP in next 3 GW's. But seriously, that means scoring at least 1+1 more than Giroud. As your fixtures suggest, that is very unlikely. He has this one very favourable GW, then it gets harder.

By the way, if you suggest that RVP is on form, that is a huge exaggeration. RVP is playing again is what it is.

In any event, you have to recall that with Giroud you have £4M more for other positions and the real question is: will your team with RVP outscore your team with Giroud by 8 points or more in next 3+ rounds. I doubt it. RVP is not doing anything that would warrant the detrimental effect that he has to other parts of the fantasy squad.

For those who are straying from Suarez (c) this week in an effort to move in the OR, does it make more sense as far as risk management to captain a high ownership guy more than a differential?

If you captain the high ownership guy and he scores big, you've gained on the masses who own but don't captain, whereas simply owning a differential who scores big is certainly going to help you climb.

+1. He's too expensive for a dead player especially with the blanks coming up where you need every player. Right now having him in the team is just trouble with little upside, but a start might change all that.

Just adding a little discussion point to the whole RVP debate, the fact that he is "hard to get" with his big cost should also be on the "plus" column since he has a DGW down the line where we have no guarantees Aguero will be fit, especially considering the fixture congestion City has. If you have RVP already this puts you in a good position captaincy-wise for the double in GW31. Out of the options available I'd say Aguero and RVP are the stand-out options, with Rooney and a couple of midfielders coming in after.

I'd love Aguero, but he's been injured for quite a while this season already and is set to be out for another month. I'm not sure I'd devise a DGW strategy that relied on him being 100% fit for the double. Sure RVP has had injury problems as well, but at least he's starting and fit (ish) now.

If Kun doesn't make it by then, I'll get RVP fo sho.

As Shadow says, that's a lot of budget to bench for even a single week (considering my low value and that I own Suarez)

Yeah. I guess a lot of people are extra eager with the Fulham match coming up next. I'm actually (sort of) planning to get both Aguero and RVP alongside Suarez for the DGW if he's fit. Usually the case with DGWs is not really the amount of DGWers you have but who you have. Defenders look pretty useless for that GW, for instance.

This is the GW everybody is talking about him because of the Fulham game. Might or might not be worth it, but my point is that it's hard to get him in without a plan. If you have an easy way to get him in this GW, say because of Aguero/Ozil funds laying around, you might be better off going for it instead of getting in a 7-8M striker and spending the funds elsewhere.

The only thing I have against RVP is that he is not yet scoring more than a goal a game. Other forwards for a lot less are giving me those returns plus the advantage of having a premium mid and defender which has helped a lot as I got Ivan and Sturridge instead of Rvp and Bruce with Mata as my mid instead of Eriksen

What other forwards are scoring a goal pr. 90 mins? RVP has 1000 minutes and 9 goals 2 assists. If he didn't have a DGW, I'm not sure I'd get him, but he does and IMO there's no other captaincy candidates for that double since Aguero is currently out.

Only reason i see to get him in now is his game against fulham but i would rather get him later only for the DGW rather than keep him through his blank.
And as i mentioned Sturridge is giving me returns every week so until Rvp gets back to last years's form i won't get him before the DGW

Looks like Cahill and Azpi plays against the "important" matches. I'll go back to GW8 for this one.

    Azpi:
GW8- 22min appearance against Cardiff after 3 days played 90mins against Schalke.
GW9- DNP against MCity after 2 days played 90 mins and Scored a goal against Arsenal for the League cup.
GW10- DNP against Newc after 4 days he played 90mins against Schalke.

    Cahill:
GW8- DNP against Cardiff after 3 days played 90mins against Schalke.
GW10- DNP against Newc after 4 days he played 90mins against Schalke.
GW16 DNP against palace after 3 days played 90 mins against Sunderland for the league cup.
GW17 played 90 mins against Arsenal after 3 days GW18 DNP against Swans after 3 days again GW19 played 90 mins against Liverpool.

    So my predictions:
    >A GW26 WBA match would they be rested for the visit at The Etihad on Feb15 for their FA cup match.
    >GW27 is tricky with a home game against Everton because after 4 days they would visit Galatasaray. So might get a rest against the Toffees.
    >The next stop for them would be against the Villains at GW30 when they face again Galatasaray 3 days after and so GW30 rest might happen.

Well go with your gut mate but I'd keep Sturridge.

At his price Sturridge is a hard one to ship -- other strikers?

AJ's point above is a good one -- you'll be missing Sturridge next week. I don't love Dzeko as much as others but he's certainly done well for you.

    Puncheon, Hazard, Lallana, Yaya (Eriksen)
    Suarez (C), Rodriguez, Bony
