As we brace ourselves for a weekend of FA Cup action, we’ve time to take stock and assess the lessons learned over Tuesday and Wednesday’s eight fixtures:

Sherwood Has His Own Agenda
Having kicked off his tenure at Tottenham with a 4-4-2, Tim Sherwood has gradually settled on a lone striker system as his preferred formation. As the weeks go by and the treatment room empties, he continues to fine tune his preferred first XI – last night saw Christian Eriksen drop out of the starting line-up for the first time since the new manager arrived, whilst Michael Dawson – who had previously played every minute of the season – joined the Dane on the bench as Younes Kaboul partnered Jan Vertonghen at the heart of the back-four. Emmanuel Adebayor’s goals seem one of the few guarantees at the Lane right now as Sherwood shows he’s not afraid to shirk big decisions and mix things up in his pursuit of a top four finish.

Sturridge is a Genuine Captaincy Option
In spite of his superb consistency, Daniel Sturridge’s first few months failed to convince us of his explosive Fantasy qualities. His first 12 appearances – five without Luis Suarez, seven with the Uruguayan – delivered just two scores of nine or more Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, highlighting his lack of captaincy credentials at a time when his fellow forward ran riot upon his return from suspension. Now, it seems, the tables have turned. Since his comeback from injury, Sturridge has beaten Suarez’ hauls in four of their five starts together ans produced nine or more points in all but one of those matches. Not so long back, many felt doubling up on the duo was overkill – not only have Sturridge’s displays put that argument to rest, they have shown that, when it comes to our armband decisions, he has to be taken seriously.

Vlaar the Key to Villa’s Survival
The Dutchman’s return against Cardiff helped his side to a first clean sheet since Gameweek 20 and their seventh of the season. Vlaar has missed six games through hamstring problems in recent weeks and it’s telling that Paul Lambert’s side have failed to register a single shut-out in his absence, averaging 1.8 goals against without their captain, compared to 1.3 with him in the XI. The Midlands side sit just four points clear of the drop zone and, if Lambert is to steer them to safety, Vlaar’s presence at the back looks vital.

Solskjaer’s Still Tinkering
A shift from 4-2-3-1 to 4-4-2, with Kenwyne Jones joined by Fraizer Campbell up top, made little difference to Cardiff’s faltering form as they failed to score for the fourth time in six under their new manager. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer not only omitted Peter Whittingham from the starting XI for the first time this term, he dropped the midfielder out of the squad altogether, whilst Kim Bo-Kyung – who had started against Swansea in the previous match – was also given the night off, despite Craig Bellamy’s suspension. The Norwegian still seems far from certain of his most efficient side and, despite some kind upcoming home games, his erratic selection policy is likely to keep Fantasy managers away.

Reid Isn’t Guaranteed Game Time
It was widely assumed that the Kiwi international would make an immediate return for the Hammers once fully recovered from an ankle problem. Reid had played very minute of the first 10 Gameweeks before sustaining the injury but, despite his return to fitness, has found himself behind James Collins and James Tomkins in the pecking order. With five clean sheets in the last six, we can hardly blame Big Sam for sticking with his current central defensive pairing – Collins’ goal against Norwich merely strengthened his case to continue as a regular, offering Fantasy managers a cut-price option at just 4.1 in FPL.

Moyes Doesn’t Know What To Do with Mata
Four games into his United career and Juan Mata has already started in three different positions under David Moyes. Handed his debut in “the hole” behind Robin van Persie, the Spaniard was shifted over to the right in the next two as Wayne Rooney was brought back into the starting XI – last night, he was moved to the left flank as Moyes drafted in Antonio Valencia on the right. With the Red Devils boss still seemingly nowhere nearer establishing a settled side, Mata’s arrival seems to have given Moyes more questions than answers – whilst the big-money move from Chelsea has boosted his game time, a move to his preferred central role may be out of Mata’s reach.

Swans Need Hernandez’ Creativity
Injuries have severely hampered the Spaniard’s game time this term, with ongoing hamstring problems limiting Hernandez to just 11 starts for Swansea. Handed a starting berth at Stoke last night after emerging from the bench to produce a pair of assists against Cardiff last Saturday, the former Valencia man teed up Chico Flores’ goal as the visitors scrapped for a draw at the Britannia. Despite his limited number of minutes, Hernandez has now registered six assists – two more than any Swansea player – and, with Michu still failing to find a way out of the treatment room, keeping his compatriot fit could be the difference between survival and a drop to the Championship for the Welsh outfit.

As a United fan, I have decided that Moyes is a complete failure.

Latest example is buying Mata and then playing home out of position, first on the right now on the left. This is due to the fact that he has buckled to Rooney's demands to play centrally, forcing him to play an old fashioned 442 that even Fulham players can ridicule!

You forgot to mention the fact that he gets his team to continually cross, despite the fact that most of them are not very good at it and there is no one in the box to capitalise even if they were. 😉

I'm not willing to give on him just yet (am quite close tho). He'll be judged at the end of the season, and hopefully RVP, Roo & Mata can strike up some sort of understanding in the run in. I can't see him getting a load to invest in the summer if he doesn't get some improvement between now and 38, but he does deserve the season, even if it is painful.

Why can't we judge him now? Its obvious we are not going to win the title (which we walked last year) and probably not even achieve top four! I would have got rid before the January window.

We're all free to judge him, after 10 mins or ten years. I'll wait til the end of the season (if he's still there!). The style of football is a concern, the shambolic defending, the lack of goals, the player's body language. But confidence is a big factor methinks, or lack of in Utd's case. And this is Moyes trying to do all the right things. I don't want to start havin a moan, I may be too late 😉

Couldn't agree more the players / management team has lost it's way totally .
It should never have come to this , I think a certain type of person / manager was required ,
      - David Moyes tho likeable was never in this league.

Another example is sacking half the coaching staff and bringing in an inferior set of Everton coaches. Fair enough, bring one with you,to keep you company (preferably P.Neville) but not all of them!

Fair enough, and doing a quick google I can see where that story came from.

I was basing my view on an interview I seen Mourinho do and he talked about knowing that Fergie was leaving ages before it was announced and that Fergie had asked him if he would be interested but I think he had already agreed to go to Chelsea.

Who knows what the truth is.

I disagree that he won't do a good job but it is evident that it is going to take time.

My take on this as an outsider is David Moyes has tried to change too much too early, instead of doing it in stages. As a result he has unsettled the players and in some cases caused upset and some of them have turned against him.

If he is given time then he should get rid of every single one of the players who does not want to be there under his management. He should know who these players are by now and should be looking to get replacements in just now, so they are ready to go when the window opens.

I think he also needs to device a system that allows Rooney, RVP and Mata to play in the same team or sell one of them in the next window.

    DZEKO:

for those that bought him in for the favorable fixtures, gw 25-27, are u still holding for gw 27 (b4 the blank gw28), or literally throwing in the towel and dropping Dzeko> Ade for a hit -4?

gw 25 --started in bench as Jov + Neg started. rumur was he had slight knock, but who knows.

risk is: Ade has goo fixture ag Nor away. and IN FORM

dzeko i hav to confess there is a good risk of him stsrting in bench AGAIN, as noone knows if that slight injury still exists.
        +
Ade will rise .3 to 8.2 by next gw. for which u will have to drop Dzeko for ade for gw 29.

        still keep Dzeko?

Well I never bought Dzeko, but if you bought him thinking he is a good option, then nothing has changed. I have Ade and would prefer Ade, but I just don't think the last 2 weeks should change your mind on who is the better option.

Dzeko had b4 gw 25 total of 29 pts for 3 PREV GW!...so it was a well thot risk

but by same token ade also had displayed explosion.obvious we went for dzeko because of th machine in total team mci VS tot.

Really want to keep dzeko for one more week.

What happened when David Moyes took over at Man Utd

DM: Who are the current coaches?

SAF: We have Rene Meulensteen, Eric Steele & Mike Phelan who have been great for me and helped make Ronaldo the player he is today.

DM: Sack the lot of them, I'm the boss and we do things my way. Lets get Chris Woods, Phil Neville, Jimmy Lumsden and Steve Round.

SAF: Are you sure about that David as these guys are amazing with great coaching ideas that the players love and respect.

DM: I told you I'm the boss and I know what the players want. Steve is the best in the business at putting out the cones and he even brings spare jumpers in case we need extra goal posts. Phil, is the man for star jumps and burpees and Jimmy is the master of shuttle runs.

SAF: Ah tae hell with it. Do what you want David, I'm away to open up that bottle of malt I have in my motor.

    a quick reply from FPL

    Hi Doug,

The definition of an assist has been modified slightly since last season.

    From the rules:
'Assists are awarded to the player from the goal scoring team, who makes the final pass before a goal is scored. An assist is awarded whether the pass was intentional (that it actually creates the chance) or unintentional (that the player had to dribble the ball or an inadvertent touch or shot created the chance).

If an opposing player touches the ball after the final pass before a goal is scored, significantly altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is awarded.'

We hope this helps clarify the situation.

    Regards,
    Fantasy Premier League Support

the fact that in the same match adebayor got an assist for a shot which was saved then scored by paulinho on the rebound (exactly the same), and bentaleb got one for a cross which was diverted slightly by krul into the path of adebayor (not the same, but if anything ropier) just makes it more bizarre.

      just imagine this was suarez

anyone else think they are shooting themselves in the foot releasing bonus an hour after?

if they gave it until the end of the gw they could review all footage and make sure no mistakes

then see if it effects bonus.

they are having to make quick decisions that are questionable because of the bonus nonsense imo

i think they do it right, this should have taken one look to give the assist.
starting to wonder if the unorthodox nature of adebayor's goal had an impact, bouncing it into the ground and over the keeper. it surely can't though, from adebayor's foot to the goal nothing else happens

You're always going to get crazy assists no matter how the rules are worded. I'm of the opinion that the transparency is not necessarily a bad thing. I keep thinking of a Bales shinned airshot, though - and although I had him at the time I can't really argue that assists should be given for things such as this.

an alternative then is just use OPTA assist. transparent yet due to the strictness you could then adjust their weighting in terms of bonus to make them worth more.
just checked and OPTA didn't give bale that assist.

again though, i like it how it is now, i think it's even more transparent than last season actually as you don't ever need to get the microscope out to check if a player's foot was inside the area or not. just this one townsend assist seems to not be

yeah but it was simple and fair imo:

inside the box, last attacking player to touch the ball gets assist.
outside the box, no assist if defending player touches it.

now it's subjective whether someone has shot or crossed, whether the direction was altered...

half my frustration is because i think they have done a good job this season with both the rule change and how well it has been applied.
aside from that though this 'shot-save-rebound goal' scenario has been an assist since i can remember in FPL. it's only in OPTA which it isn't (which i agree with btw, it's not a pass so therefore not a true assist for me). it's such a standard assist, so much so i think fpl have just made an error and an't be arsed to disrupt the game slightly and change it now the update has passed

Their rules also clearly state that:

      Rebounds
If a shot on goal is blocked by an opposition player, is saved by a goalkeeper or hits the woodwork, and a goal is scored from the rebound, then an assist is awarded.

      no way

norwich are not easy to break at home, the only tempting fixture is cardiff but then horrible fixtures to follow. also arsenal have 3 good fixtures now
